Discussion Topic: What’s Newcastle’s Best Team?

August 9th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 42 Comments

The discussion topic for today is a difficult one and probably means Sam has done a decent job in the transfer market.

What is our best Newcastle team assuming we have everyone available?

nufc-crest.png

Let’s assume, for the purposes of this exercise, that we’ll play 4-3-3 at home and 4-4-2 away (even if we don’t).

We’ll ask you for two teams.

1)  Home Team
2)  Away Team

Also, if you have any ideas or considerations on a rotation policy please let us know. Sam has already indicated he will need to use some kind of rotation just to give everyone a game and keep all of the squad involved.

Some questions that need answering given the much stronger squad we have for this season:

1)Which two to choose between Taylor, Rozehnal and Cacapa for the two center-backs?

2)Which two or three strikers get the nod given the awesome strike force we have this season of Viduka, Smith, Owen, Martins, Ameobi, Luque and Carroll.

One of Sam’s toughest jobs this season we feel will be to keep all the players happy - but he seems to be a master at that - so we’re not too worried. It also shows we haven’t been too spoiled for choice in the past.

You’ll notice we are not volunteering any teams today – that’s only because it’s not easy  :D

Let’s have your teams and any points you want to make on rotation policy  - thanks.

ok…. as to rotation. i think taylor will get rotated out frequently (the lad is young!!!) with cacapa and maybe another CB we buy later. here’s hoping we buy a right back to rotate with carr. i think the zog and enrique will rotate frequently with baba in the mix when he’s healthy (hopefully never, he’s woeful). and i think geremi and barton will be fixtures in the squad both home and away. smith will play when we need an attacking formation. viduka will play when the opposite occurs, to hold up play and allow martins or owen to feed off him.

i’m watching youtube videos and getting really excited. come on SATURDAY.

    Rotation:

Cacapa for Taylor (60%) and Rozenhall (40%)
Ramage used as sub 50% as cover during injuries
Babayaro/N’Zogbia (or new LB) for Enrique
    Solano and Duff for Milner
    Butt for Geremi
    Emre for Barton
    Luque and Duff for N’Zogbia
Luque and maybe N’Zogbia/Milner for Smith when playing 4-3-3???
Ameobi for Viduka (think Carrol will go on loan)
    Martins for Owen

Who’ve I missed? Edgar, Huntington, Troisi, Patterson, etc will be introduced as substitutes although I still think either Edgar or Huntington will go on loan. Just don’t know which one?

  • 5 apan // Aug 9, 2007 at 6:47

i would be more defensive in away games than home because we always lose points playin away so at least win the games or grab a point not worried about home games we are superb at home our fotress is back! New players in the EPL should play more home games while experience players in EPL will handle the away games better

In my home squad as a rotation Nicky butt would come in and Geremi would go right back and Carr would come off.
Steven Taylor would come off every so often and Cacapa would come in.
Michael Owen would come off every so often Smith would go up front and emre would fit in at centre midfield - if emre is not fit, smith would stay where he is and luque would go upfront

In my away team as a rotation Charles N’zogbia and Emre would come on for 2 of the three Smith Barton and Milner so perhaps Smith and barton come off Charlie and Emre come on or milner and barton come off and smith would go right mid and charlie would go left and emre AM

  • 14 Owen // Aug 9, 2007 at 8:14

I get the feeling we’ll be playing something more like 5 at the back for away games, 2 wing backs etc. It might look something like this.

    ……………………………….Given………………………………………

    Solano……Taylor……. Cacapa……..Rohsenhal……… Enrique.

    …………….Geremi………….Barton…………Butt…………………..

    ……………………Martins………………..Owen……………………….

This would be a seriously good, solid, counter attacking side with the pace of Owen and Martins up front. Smith, Viduka, Milner, Zog , Harper on the bench.

    Home

    Carr………..Taylor…………..Rohsenal………….Enrique

    ……..Milner…………Geremi…………..Barton……………

    …………………………..Smith……………………………..

    ………………Martins………………Owen………………..

This is a good attacking line up against the weaker teams but against the ManU, Chelski and Liverpools, I’d probably like to see 4-4-2 with Butt coming into the centre and Smith moving up to replace Owen or Martins.

Now lets hope we can fulfill the potenial…….. roll on Saturday :)

  • 15 Sean // Aug 9, 2007 at 8:15

anyone who i haven’t mentioned will come on as sub in most games

  • 16 shaun D // Aug 9, 2007 at 8:19

Really difficult when everyone’s fit. The centre off the park and upfront are the most difficult - I also think it’ll be a scrap for left midfield between zog and duff this season, if duff gets back near to the duff of old. would like a new rb. Also, don’t know who’s the best two out of cacapa, rozehnal or Taylor!
Smith and Viduka will be used rotation. Taylor will also be rotated with Cacapa or rozehnal. Smith and Barton will be fighting it out for a place at home. Of course teams will be dependant on opposition, especially away.

With EVERYBODY fit it will be a tough choice.

    Great problem to have.

Would prefer not to waste Geremi at RB but it’s good option to have if we don’t sign another RB before January.

You never know, BSA might turn Carr back into the great RB he was for Spurs, but I reckon this is his last season at the Toon.

Flamini is still available and would make a great RB for us.

  • 21 Gary // Aug 9, 2007 at 8:30

    away:

    Geremi Rozenhal Capaca Enrique

    Milner Barton Butt Duff

    Martins Owen

Possibly rotate our midfield pairings with butt, smith, emre. Can’t wait for the new season, hopefully we’ll get of to a good start abd get the confidence flowing.

  • 22 Gary // Aug 9, 2007 at 8:31

Forgot about Zog, he will be rotated aswell in the middle. That’s his best position

  • 23 Ian, Doha // Aug 9, 2007 at 8:33

    What happens if Dyer stays?

When fit and with the right frame of mind he’ll make the starting eleven but in what position, and what’s his best position?

I was just wondering how ameobi is performing.
Anyone who has seen him in action this preseason- how’s he performing?
Also, do u think once Enrique is established at lb, will solano replace carr at rb?

  • 29 Howay The Black And White Army // Aug 9, 2007 at 8:58

Does no one seem to like cacapa. So this guy is good enough to be lyon’s captain over players like juninho pernambucano, coupet and malouda but he’s not even good enough to make our starting 11. Sounds kinda crazy to me.

  • 30 Sean // Aug 9, 2007 at 9:21

i know i’ve got him in my startin XI

  • 31 shaun d // Aug 9, 2007 at 9:39

Howay The Black And White Army - Re cacapa - I think our centre backs could be any two of the three. I guess it’s because we haven’t seen him play yet. Rozenhal has looked accomplished in pre seaseon so it’s prob based on that. It’s an exciting prospect that we will have 3 quality cbs to choose from though isn’t it

We would need 2 more decent centrebacks for cover using this formation

Huntington and Ramage (for now) as cover for any of the 3 CB
    Solano for Milner
    N’Zogbia for Enrique
    Butt for Geremi
    Emre for Barton

    Rotation:

    Carr for Cacapa
    N Zogbia for Enrique
    Cacapa For Taylor
    Ramage For Rozenthal
    Dyer or Solano for Smith
N Zogbia or Duff for Milner
Dyer, Luque or Smith for Barton
    Martins for Owen
    Luque or Smith for Viduka

I would even try Owen and Martins up front with Dyer just behind them, (if he’s still here) that sort of pace from the front 3 will have every defence in the country brickin it come 3.oopm on a saturday afternoon.

I don’t know why everyone wants to play Geremi in midfield. We’ve got so much talent in midfield and surely Butt is a better in the holding role.

Better to replace the mediocre Carr at right back or use him as a utility substitute.
