Newcastle Draw Arsenal Away in Carling Cup

September 1st, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 27 Comments

Newcastle United have been handed a difficult tie against Arsenal away in the pick of the Carling Cup Third Round.
Newcastle beat Barnsley 2-0 in the second round to reach this stage and will now face Arsenal at the Emirates stadium.

It will be interesting to see what team Arsenal will select against Newcastle since the Magpies will have their strongest team available in a bid to win a trophy this year.

Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger - what team will he play against Newcastle?

It’s not the tie we would have asked for – but that’s the luck of the draw. However, Newcastle have faired quite well against Arsenal in recent seasons. However, with all the lower league teams still left in the last 32 it couldn’t have been a more difficult challenge for the Magpies.

The draw in full is as follows::

Blackburn v Birmingham
Reading v Liverpool
Manchester United v Coventry
Tottenham v Middlesbrough
Hull v Chelsea
Blackpool v Southend
West Ham v Plymouth
Arsenal v Newcastle
Luton v Charlton
Manchester City v Norwich
Sheffield United v Morecambe
Sheffield Wednesday v Everton
Fulham v Bolton
Burnley v Portsmouth
Aston Villa v Nottingham Forest or Leicester
West Brom v Cardiff

Ties to be played the week commencing 24 September.

Comments very welcome.

I’d rather play them now than later on, as they’re more likely to field a shadow side at this stage of the competition. With our experienced players, we should be a match for them.

We have to face the top teams anyway,so why not now.

I think most fans will fancy our chances…….if this had been last season we’d have had no chance….about time we showed the London teams the Toon are no pushovers!!! Roll on Wigan. Any team news????

They could have made it easier for us, although history tells that Arsenal will field a young side so they’re beatable…..

  • 8 Le // Sep 1, 2007 at 13:37

A Wenger will have to put out a good team to beat you, you have good strikers and midfielders with experience, will be a good match, so both set of fans should just enjoy the good footy.

yep, this is an oppertunity to show everyone what we are made of.

WE cant shy away from fixtures like this.

At Least SKY SPORTS should finally show one of our games!!!! if they dont show this tie and they show Hull Vs Chelsea ill be livid.

so far they have shown like 3 man u games, 3 spurs games, 2 sunderland games etc…eetc… and not 1 Toon game. Why do they have it in for us so much??

    Come on the Toon!!!

I think beating them early on will give the lads the confidence to go all the way.

we need to be able to go away against teams like this and cause upsets if we ever want to amount to anything .
we’ve been the underdog many a time before and turned heads when we have won .
looking at our squad on paper makes me smile , hasnt been like that for donkeys years .

  • 25 Johnny Utah // Sep 2, 2007 at 5:46

Hey, just two things about the Arsenal game…

    1. Arsenal’s focus is not on winning the Carling cup.

    2. Henry doesn’t play for Arsenal anymore and they are a shell of the offensive powerhouse they were 2 or 3 years ago. We have nothing to fear with our solid D now. Our back line will get better every game, so by the time they play us they will consider playing their best.

If we want to play in Europe then we should be confident when we play the “big 4,” piss on Arsenal…

  • 26 monkeychops // Sep 25, 2007 at 2:59

the toon’s going down!! We spanked many a prem team last year with our so called “kids”, and almost won against a full strength chelsea. With that experience, we’ll prob go all the way again and one better! Howay the arsenal!

  • 27 james // Sep 25, 2007 at 15:11

NUFC is a has been club, u all know that ur gonna get dick wipped by arsenals 16 year olds tonite. jus cos u fill out st james every week to see owen limp off and ur players attempting to play the beautiful game does NOT make u loyal, just stupid.
