HT: Arsenal 0 Newcastle 0 - Magpies Hanging On

The Newcastle manager caused a surprise by playing Shola Ameobi up front with Martins and Milner in a 4-3-3 formation. As expected Faye started in midfield for the first time for Newcastle United.

Teams:

Arsenal: Fabianski, Eboue, Hoyte, Senderos, Traore, Denilson, Diarra, Song, Bendtner, Eduardo, Walcott

Subs: Mannone, Gavin Hoyte, Perez, Diaby, Lansbury

Newcastle United: Given, Beye, Taylor, Rozehnal, Enrique, Milner, Faye, Ameobi, N’Zogbia, Martins, Smith

Subs: Forster, Edgar, Butt, Emre, Geremi

Referee: Howard Webb

Newcastle started in an attacking 4-3-3 formation and the game got off to a fast start with both teams willing to attack each other.

After 10 minutes Newcastle had a wonderful chance to go ahead as Enrique sent in a powerful cross and Martins eluded Senderos rather easily to put in a powerful header, that forced Fabianski made a wonderful save.

Then after 16 minutes Arsenal had an even better chance when Bendtner sent in a powerful header from another excellent cross which flashed over the crossbar when he really should have scored.

James Milner was not his usual self, when after 20 minutes he gave the ball away twice within a couple of minutes. The game was end to end with both sides producing an end to end attacking game in front of a full house at the Emirates Stadium. After 25 minutes there was a half chance for Arsenal when a cross came over from Eboue and Beye challenged Eduardo as the Arsenal youngster slid in but the ball went by the post for a goal kick.

After 25 minutes the Arsenal youngsters were hitting their stride and putting pressure on the Newcastle defense. Newcastle’s defense were being put under pressure as Arsenal were attacking in style and playing some terrific flowing football. After 30 minutes Martins had a good chance but Oba lashed the ball wide when some calmness surely would have ensured a goal. It was Milner who hit a beautiful ball over the top for Martins. Oba needs to gain more composure when these chances present themselves.

After 38 minutes, following a free kick for a foul on Eboue, Walcott sent a shot over the crossbar but he had too much time to shoot. The Newcastle defense is being stretched but they are holding out well. Shola Ameoi is playing out wide on the left but is looking out of place and his confidence is not high.

There is some hope for Newcastle as Senderos has made one or two errors in central defense that Arsenal have not been punished for. Newcastle must think they have a chance if they can get Martins one on one with Senderos exposed. Seems like most of the Arsenal players are teenagers - but their age bears no resemblance at all to their skill as they continue to play excellent football.

The half time whistle comes and everyone is surprised as the game has been enthralling and passed so quickly. An excellent game to watch but Arsenal are the better team - but it’s still 0-0 and Newcastle are still in with a chance.

This is a chance for perhaps Emre to come on in the second half for Newcastle - because the game is pure football and Emre can play in this kind of game. His creativity could open a few chances for the black and whites.

However, it doesn’t look like 4-3-3 is doing Newcastle any favors as Arsenal is playing at a tremendous pace and it’s really hard for the middle 3. As half-time approaches Beye seems heavy legged as he seems to be suffering from the speed of the Premiership. The game is completely open and being played at a frantic pace by the young Gunners.

Where does Wenger find these players?

Ameobi is on the left wing - and looks out of sorts - I think Sam needs to bring some subs on. Beye is looking knackered at half time - we only have young Edgar for defense.

  • 6 dopaz // Sep 25, 2007 at 20:48

    agree, 4 4 2 , ameobi off emre on push smith up……

  • 7 Ed Harrison // Sep 25, 2007 at 20:48

Arsenal unfortunately are playing as well as they did on Saturday - but this is a completely different team - they seem unbelievable.

  • 8 Ed Harrison // Sep 25, 2007 at 20:49

Games about to start again - let’s hope we can do it. At least we’ve been solid.

  • 9 phoonck // Sep 25, 2007 at 20:55

ED, is the match being shown live? where did u get the facts on the match? live streaming or live commentary?

  • 10 Tripp // Sep 25, 2007 at 20:58

phoonck, the games on the radio. It’s not televised as far as I can tell.

thanx, TRIPP.. but is there live radio commentary on the web?

  • 12 Sinead // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:13

Arsenal are harrasing the Newcastle goal, Given did well to get down. Still very lucky to be 0-0 it seems like just a matter of time before they score.

    Emre repalces Shola Ameobi

    Milners off for Butt, interesting.

  • 17 Sinead // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:15

What a stop by Given that was too close. Eboue who’s causing all sorts of problems has gone off for Diaby.

    Emre replaces Ameobi.

so we are playing 442 now

The game is getting very stretched. Half chances are starting to appear at both ends.

    73 mins

SHOT - Bendtner goes for the delicate approach. He tries curling the ball around Given but it goes high and wide.

    79 mins

SHOT - The front pair of Bendtner and Eduardo have made life difficult for the Newcastle defence all night and nearly combine for the opening goal. Fabulous one touch football but the Croatia international’s shot trickles just wide

    84 mins Goal

GOAL - Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle: Traore plays the perfect cross right onto Bendtner’s head. The striker directs the header home in confident fashion. The Gunners deserve the lead.

  • 36 w2 // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:30

theory of maradona anyone.. u expect the guy to go left and right he goes thru in a straight line beating 5 defenders. manage ur own players expectations play like normal these youngsters wont stand a chance.

  • 37 ToonKing // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:31

i’m getting annoyed with oba……….twice he’s done it now, missing an empty net :(

  • 38 Ant // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:31

keep us updated guys im mighty pissed i couldn’t watch this game.

  • 39 phoonck // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:31

    85 mins

CHANCE - Martins is clear through and rounds Fabianski. He looks certain to score but Senderos is on hand to slide in and clear the ball away. Excellent defending from the captain.

  • 40 Murvar // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:34

Let’s face it, Oba’s a bit of a clown. If he has time to think he gets it wrong. If he can be instinctive, he does better. At this rate his strike rate will be worse than Malcolm Macdonald’s - the 2 most overrated players to wear the black and white in my view - and now it’s 2 0

  • 41 AlexW // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:34

    2-0 f*&^ck it

    89 mins Goal

GOAL - Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle: Diaby dazzles two Newcastle defenders, tees up Denilson just inside the box. The Brazillian smashes the ball hoe across Given and into the top corner.

  • 53 ToonKing // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:37

    ………painfully clear……….

  • 54 w2 // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:38

whose idea was to not to pick in form striker and pick mickey owwen instead.. but decided to continue picking harper.. now u got leaky shay given

  • 55 Sinead // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:38

Good goal though, Given had no chance, what happened great defending.

  • 56 JoshI // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:39

So they have pretty much torn us apart with their second string team of youngsters with probably less than a years premiership experience between them? How awfully embarrasing.

  • 57 w2 // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:39

i told u without viduka we are nothing.. no proper way of playing.. playing 3 in the middle with mediocre players.

  • 58 Tom // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:39

Im annoyed… why did we play 4 3 3 when we played so well with 4 4 2? and why so defensive? we should have had a go at arsenal with players like zog and martins why did we sit back? crazy…

  • 59 Sinead // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:40

    2-0.

  • 60 w2 // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:41

i think we are going to lose everymatch without viduka.. competition for places?? really?? what a joke.. get the money get gudjohnson

  • 61 phoonck // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:41

seems like our senior players cant even match up to those arsenal bright and brilliant youngsters..

    1st silverware chance gone..

  • 62 ToonKing // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:42

We did play 4-4-2 and we did give it a go………but they tore us apart, this is embarrasing..

I got banned on another forum too…….:( ………..for calling them fookin’ gooner c*(&ts ……cause that’s what they are.

PS: Sorry kids, i’m pretty mad…

  • 63 w2 // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:42

without viduka big sam’s tactics dont work!!!

  • 64 Sinead // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:43

W2 are you actually watching the match?? Cause if you were you wouldn’t have said what you just said. Harper wouldn’t of had a chance it goes down to horrific defending, yet again.

  • 65 JoshI // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:43

Yerp we need a player like Gujohnson, Martins clearly can’t cut it, he’s doesnt have the instinct or precision.

  • 66 JoshI // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:45

And it looks like Owen is a crocked. Maybe for good this time :(

  • 67 phoonck // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:45

i started to think, if martins and given was chosen regularly, and not on the bench, could they maintain their match sharpness and be better than what is seen today?

  • 68 Sinead // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:45

The young lads are flying. Bad defending, no structure at all, Given’s played well, hopefully he’s done enough to get back in between the posts.

  • 69 Tripp // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:45

I’m guessing that Bolton used a 4-3-3 against arsenal when they were successful. Martins needs to develop composure. Hopefully this was Shola’s last chance. 4-4-2 seems to be a better formation for us.

  • 70 milner fan // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:46

Easy now lads, teams doesnt revolve around viduka. We were out classed by sum forgien kids. Defending and keeping were faultless. Just didnt attack enuf. Buy DECO!!!!

  • 71 Ivan // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:46

    oh well, its over.
come on you guys! i mean even the odds were on arsenal win.
evryone is disappointed, hey thats a fact, but we all cant expect big sam and the new lads to bring instant change. one day we are this club with comedic defence and then instantly we are barcelona. no, give them time!
although i have to admit, this is embarrassing.

  • 72 nufcstats.com // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:47

bye bye carling cup… destroyed by teenagers. it could be much much more. 5 or 6. awful second half. Martins is out of form. miss against WHU was meaningless but was an alert. tonight he missed all of our 3 chances with the last for 1-1 seems to be a copy from Sunday but this time on target but to weak… fully deserved win for Arsenal after great display. it is worrying we again looked not interested at all. like against Derby. Faye, Martins, Ameobi, Smith, Milner (any decent performance this season…) . the question is what NUFC is more like? that from Sunday or from Derby and tonight game. we have no players to play 4-3-3 but Sam still wastes Smith at right midfield and put Shola upfront… i’m not worried just because of result. Arsenal played so well but i’m worried about we are not able to play well game after game and again looked not involved. Owen can be out, Viduka won’t play every week, Shola is poor, Martins out of form and where is that powerfull attacking force with 5 stars fighting for 2 places?
it is like a rollercoster now but maybe it is just a case of new gaffer, new players and all that need some time. hope so :)

  • 73 JoshI // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:47

No defending clearly wasn’t “faultless” as 2 goals were let in, Deco isn’t good enough.

  • 74 milner fan // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:49

two good goals. Could have easily been 6-0 2nite

  • 75 Sinead // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:49

phoonck ..ya it’s unfair to throw players in like that and expect them to be as sharp as they need to be against a team like Arsenal, more game time and they will flurish but that’s not going to happen because Sam has his mind made up. Like Given did well, Martins did ok, but Given was hitting the form of his life the last time we saw him. He was outstanding with Ireland. He needs game time, as does Martins.

  • 76 JJ // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:51

Martins will come good, he has been draned of game time and got kicked out for Owen when he was on such a high! Remember Owen his first game back, missed sitters too. But seriously angry Ameobi played up front and not Smith.
Defense looked fine, but we really need more drive in midfield (Joey Barton) cos with only NZogbia now he will get marked out of the game.

  • 77 phoonck // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:52

hopefully BSA can realize we are NEWCASTLE, not BOLTON. with our players, we should get offensive and force opponents on their heels instead of going to places and just sit back to defend and hope for ONE CHANCE to nick in a goal..

again, this match proved we’re short of creativity in the centre. hopefully emre will remain fit, barton and duff to return soon.. and hopefully its the last time we see atrocious ameobi anywhere on the field..

as an Arsenal fan i must say
    ha
    ha
    ha

and to be real- the players are playing together from age 14-15 so they play good ur players are just starting with fat sami so they have room to improve

  • 79 morph64m // Sep 25, 2007 at 21:56

unlucky lads, well see which of our juniors we can loan you for the season.ha ha

  • 80 JJ // Sep 25, 2007 at 22:02

Just for the idiots who have said Martins cant cut is eg Sinead, please find a new team to support. Because if you cant back the best goal scorer we’ve had in the last three years (17 prem goals) - more than Shearer, and our top goal scorer so far this season - more than Owen. Then who can you back. Seriously. The guy needs game time. As wil Barton, Duff, Emre etc.

  • 81 Sinead // Sep 25, 2007 at 22:05

We need Given in goal, we need to give him more game time. Because reality like Given is better then Harper, I don’t care what kind of form Harper’s been on, Given is better and we saw him tonight, he did well tonight. More game time and he will get to that form and he was on.
Martins like he missed a couple of good chances more game time and he’ll put them away. Barton back that should liven it up, Duff when he plays like he can play he’ll sparkle. Smith aswell he’ll only get better. If he’s played in the right position. I wish Sam would stop messing around, swallow his pride and fix it.

  • 82 JoshI // Sep 25, 2007 at 22:10

I hate it when Gunner twats comment on our team blog! At least we have English players ffs!

  • 83 Borzay Dinton-Alexazana // Sep 25, 2007 at 22:18

    yea English…….

    f#$#ck u!
we had 2 “English” players on today and the reaon we dont have more is cus they cost more then they r worth - 16 for Bent? 18 for car-ik ?
arsen wanted Roony and wanted SRP and they went to money-land chel$ki and mnua

  • 84 Murvar // Sep 25, 2007 at 22:20

This thing between Sinead and Shay is bigger than all of us. There is nothing to choose between SH and SG. Owen is a footballer; Martins isn’t. Oba will get you a flash Harry goal every now and then but for the most chances converted over a season, Owen’s the man. Martins could have had 3 tonight according to Radio Newcastle commentators; he got none. And his miss against Wham was embarassing.

  • 85 Ashton // Sep 25, 2007 at 22:36
