Barcelona could offload strikers Eidur Gudjohnsen, who was linked with Newcastle United during the summer, and Santiago Ezquerro, a reported target for Everton and Bolton.
They could well be offloaded in January, since they seem surplus to requirements at Barcelona, and we think Eidur would be an excellent acquisition for Newcastle.
We also think Edmilson will be brought to Newcastle from Barcelona, and the deal may already have been struck by the club.

Brazilian International Edmilson - too good a deal for Sam not to take?
Gudjohnsen can play striker up front, or out wide in a 4-3-3 formation. He can also play midfield and scores goals. Barcelona technical secretary Txiki Beguiristain has suggested that signing Gudjohnsen and Ezquerro may have even been a mistake, since the Spanish giants’ youngsters of the caliber of Giovani Dos Santos and Bojan Krkic have come along more quickly than they had expected.
Beguiristain told RAC 1:
“There will always be mistakes because you have to have the players who are numbers 21, 22 and 23 in the squad.”
“As such, Beguiristain feels a solution to satisfy both parties – club and players who want regular football – is in the offing.”
“Gudjohnsen believes that he still has a chance here, but at the moment the coaches are giving more time to Giovani and Bojan.”
“If Ezquerro and Gudjohnsen are not given playing time then we will have to look for a situation that suits everyone.”
“What is clear is that if there is an offer then first of all we will have to talk to the player. I know that Ezquerro is thinking about playing abroad.”
Newcastle will likely do some business in January with Barcelona for their 42 cap Brazilian 6’ 1” center-back Edmilson - his full name is José Edmílson Gomes de Moraes - what a contrast to a simple English name like Alan Smith
We believe Big Sam can pick up Edmilson for a small fee, since his contract runs out at Barcelona in June. Sam has already met with the Brazilian and his wife, who were said to be very impressed with the big man and his plans for Newcastle.
We think Newcastle may have already struck a deal with the Catalan club for him, and the only doubt will be his knee injury, which should have cleared up by January. No doubt Sam will have it checked out before any deal is finalized.

Eidur Gudjohnsen - a proven Premiership player up front or in midfield
Sam also met with Barcelona for Gudjohnsen in January and don’t be surprised if Sam does a double deal with the Spanish club. Sam had Gudjohnsen at Bolton before Eidur made it big at Chelsea and he is an acknowledged admirer of Big Sam’s capabilities. The quality of both players will be a welcome addition to the squad in January and can help the Magpies push further up the league through May.
What do you think - comments always welcome.

Good things come in threes. Let’s pick up Deco while we’re at it.
2 ssdd // Oct 16, 2007 at 17:18
replace ameobi with eidur
if Emilson come, we will have 5 defenders
( faye, cacapa , rozehnal, taylor, emilson)
we only need 2 defenders every match, and we are not playing many games(no euro,no carling cup)
so how?
surely none of them like to sit on the bench

Would rather have dos santos than any of them.
Although they would be nice
4 leo // Oct 16, 2007 at 17:43
haha dos santos wont come to newcastle eider might
just seen john terry saying he will put the knee operation on hold so he can play for england rather than chelsea, bet the papers dont jump on his back like they do owens…

I would love to get Eiður to Newcastle as an Icelander I have followed him a lot and I love his playing style. He is not a goal scoring machine he is better at making chances. And he is a great player with lots of creativity. I think he would fit into the newcastle playing style perfectly. And if ameobi leaves he would be a great replacement and would give lots of competition up front.

edmilson in DM & Gudjohnson in attack.Going to be a good signing
7 Cockney Magpie // Oct 16, 2007 at 18:06
I rele hope we get edmilson we could play him and barton in the centre together with nzog and duff on either wing! that would be a very strong midfield
8 big pea ov the weab // Oct 16, 2007 at 20:21
wot about ronildinio deco rooney ronaldo ……………………… then again probs not a cant c any other big names wanting to come to the toon wen theres no europe footy

Not bothered about either to be totally honest. Id only like to see Edmilson is Butt is being shipped out, but that is highly unlikely.
Id like to see a good winger, a perfect crosser. Then we have Duff for dribbling experience and a good crosser for crossing experience for both our young wingers. The person id like to see is Jerome Rothen, he basically single handedly took Monaco to the CL final with his superb crossing and overall play.

Amazing, October and already we are discussing the January transfer window. I will be walking into the MetroCentre next and see Christmas decorations!!!
On a serious note, it will be interesting to see if we can attract players of this calibre to Newcastle bearing in mind the lack of European football.
The signing of Eidur would mean the end of Shola which is a shame because I genuinely feel that he could be a world beater……honest!

Tom_Toon i agree, i think we need to unearth the new Keith Gillespie!
12 Cockney Magpie // Oct 16, 2007 at 20:57
Now there was a man who could cross a ball!
13 ToonKing // Oct 16, 2007 at 21:59
I must admit i’m not overly excited about either of them, but they would be good additions. If the two of them replace Butt,Ameobi or Carr i’m happy.
Edmilson is actually a very good holding midfielder and also very strong so he could do a very good job at replacing Butt, and we’ve all seen that Eidur is quite a capable player aswell, so overall i would take them.
14 Ashton // Oct 16, 2007 at 22:41
Jerome Rothen is a left winger
and we have Duff , N’zogbia , Emre
so why the hell we would need another left winger
be more releastic
i would like to see Veloso in the black and whit shirt rather than Edmilson
15 Tom_Toon // Oct 16, 2007 at 23:16
Duff can play on the right for one, and there isnt a much better crosser and long ball specialist of the ball than Rothen except for Beckham.
Play Rothen left, Duff right.
It would almost be impossible to find someone of his quality of crossing and long balls, with his experience and a full international at a club he would be will to leave, e.g not a CL club.
16 Tom_Toon // Oct 16, 2007 at 23:17
A winger is a winger, most wingers can play both sides comfortably.

Hi Ashton nice to speak to you again, I did post a reply to your kind comments perhaps you would like to check it out.

We should always be trying to get better players into the club. Eidur is way better than Shola so welcome Eidur and a one way bus ticket to Blyth Spartans for Shola. Apparently Edmilson has won 1 world cup, 5 national cups, and 5 league titles. He is a candidate to captain Brazil in next world cup. So lets welcome Edmilson and buy a one way bus ticket to Whitley Bay for any of Ramage / Babyahoo / Carr / or Pattison.
19 Rich // Oct 17, 2007 at 9:01
Totally agree with the need for a winger then we will have 4 wide players competing for places. Im a big admirer of Rothen as well, Shaun Wright Phillips was also in m,y thoughts but his final ball is not good enough yet. Please for edmilson, dont think we need Gudjohnsen though, id have Smith as an outright 4th striker and buy a more natural attacking midfield player
20 Shane // Oct 17, 2007 at 9:27
Don’t need either of them. For one, they are either pushing 30 or they are over it. Secondly, we already have players more than capable of playing their positions. Can’t see Eidur getting regular first team action with Owen, Oba and Viduka, and we already have Geremi and Butt playing the holding midfield role, so why bother?
21 Ed Harrison // Oct 17, 2007 at 10:18
Shane - to build the depth of the squad up - we don’t just want 11 first temers - that’s what we;ve done in the past - and why injuries can decimate us so easily.
22 Macas // Oct 17, 2007 at 11:34
Gudjohnsen is a million times better than Martins and god knows how many times better than Ameoba
23 leo // Oct 17, 2007 at 12:29
nah he isnt a million times better, thats foolish to say that, martins is probly a little behind gudjohnsen but is also a hell of a lot younger…
24 Ashton // Oct 17, 2007 at 12:57
Tom_Toon
i hate you
and what is this bullshit you are talking about
Duff never played in the righ wing position
and if fat sam put him there and duff didn’t perform well he will blame fat sam and say i want to playe in natural position bla bla bla … and you forgot Emre and N’zogbia and they are alot more better than Rothan .
25 Todd // Oct 17, 2007 at 13:32
Gudjohnson hasn’t been exactly lighting it up at Barca even when he does get chances so I dunno about spending alot of money for him. He is also older and picks up knocks.
Edmilson is a holder and would be a good depth guy, since we have a bunch of those types already. Why get rid of Nicky Butt? He is solid as a rock in his role.
On the other hand, if Newcastle get into Europe based on their performance this year, they are going to need to add a bunch of people for depth.
26 Tom_Toon // Oct 17, 2007 at 15:06
Emre is going to plau in the centre, N’Zogbia i didnt forget him but we need experience for him, and didnt you watch any of the games Duff played at chelsea, switching right to left almost every game and doing well on both sides.
Ashton you really dont know much about football if you think N’Zogbia and Emre are better on the l;eft wing than Rothen. Most people know he is one of the best crossers in the world.
27 Lee R // Oct 17, 2007 at 16:28
I totaly agree with Ashton. Duff cant cross with his left let alone his right. How many assisits did he get for us and Chelsea. I bet its less than 10 considering he played a fair few game.
28 Stami // Oct 17, 2007 at 16:39
Tom_Toon
i have to agree with your last comment!
Zoggy is still a very young player, and it will only benifit him playing alongside mature footballers!
as for Duff, he is very versatile, i have seen him play well at CAM as well as both wings!
Ashton

Lee R, if you read my other comments i was talking about Rothen being a crossing expert to give experience to our young wingers and duff being a dribbling expert.
