Newcastle beat Tottenham 3-1 in a well contested game at St. James’ Park tonight and deserved their win. But Spurs have to blame their poor defending for losing this game. Newcastle were too good up front against a poor Spurs defense.
The first goal was a bad mistake by Michael Dawson as Oba Martins won a 50 yard long high ball from Spaniard Jose Enrique and Oba had the ball in the net before the Spurs defense knew what was happening.

Oba Martins - another great Martins opportunist goal
Then on 52 minutes a beautiful corner from the right came across from N’Zogbia and Cacapa powered home an unstoppable header, his first goal for the club. It was a typical set play that Newcastle practice every day and Faye had hit the post from another corner in the first half. Cacapa easily beat Dawson to the ball, who has to take responsibility for the goal. Newcastle were on top but surprisingly within 5 minutes Spurs had scored.
On 57 minutes the ball hit the post from a Bent header and Keane stabbed the ball home – a goal out of nowhere. Tottenham were right back in the game and it was a bad goal to give away by the home side – and no clean sheet again.
Then on 73 minutes Milner hit his first goal of the season, when he mishit his first attempt but the ball came back to him and he hit a beautiful left foot volley to the left of Carny, who had no chance. A great goal from young Milner.

Claudio Cacapa - a great headed 2nd goal - and man of the match
Newcastle brought on Rozehnal for Michael Owen with 12 minutes to go and David slotted in front of the back four to mop up. Newcastle played the last minutes out comfortably as all the commentators are talking about is Tottenham - but Newcastle take all 3 points.
======================================================================
Here’s a minute by minute account of the game - which in the first half was extremely tentative.
7 mins The play has been scrappy with both sides trying to get control of the midfield. But its clear Tottenham have come here for points.
10 mins Newcastle are playing too many high balls up front – which is not good given we’ve got two small strikers tonight.
The game has been subdued in the first 10 minutes and both teams are respecting each other too much.
13 mins From a corner from N’Zogbia Faye gets a good close header in that rebounds off the post – very close to a goal for the Magpies from their first set piece.
14 mins – Tottenham take a quick free kick and Keane puts the ball towards goal but Beye kicks clear. It could have been a goal and Given is furious because Tottenham played the free kick quickly when Bale was waving for treatment.
Owen and Martins are showing great speed and if they can get running at the Tottenham defense they can cause big problems. But the balls in continue to be too high.
19 mins 18 year-old Bale has an ankle injury and is replaced by the Fin Teemu Tainio.
Newcastle are playing it very safe at the back with several balls being played back to given.
23 mins The game needs a goal – it’s like a morgue out there.
A wonderful tackle by Beye stops a Tottenham attack dead in its tracks and he plays the ball away.
Cacapa blocks a shot beautifully, but with his face, but it’s a great block by the Brazilian on the edge of the area.
27 mins – Owen gets the ball through in the left channel and a beautiful shot but the goalkeeper Cerny makes a good save to his left. Half a chance. The Tottenham defense looks shaky on set pieces.
29 mins Keane gets some space but a weak shot is easily saved by fellow Irishman Given.
Newcastle are lacking a cutting edge up front and need to stop punting the ball up the middle.
33 mins Emre gets the ball loose about 10 yards outside the area but shoots wide.
Geremi puts a free kick wide to the right but it’s a deflection but the referee gives a goal kick.
The best way to describe this game after 39 minutes is it’s all very tentative. A goal is needed to set the game alight.
Martins gets loose somehow in the penalty box and his shot is blocked by Cerny and Owen following up hits the ball towards the goal but again it’s cleared.
It’s a boring game.
Then Martins gets clear in the center and beautifully shoots past Cerny. Cerny gets a foot to it, but the ball is in the net. Poor defending by the Spurs defense - Michael Dawson - and a typical Martins goal. A goal out of nothing and he punishes the lethargic Tottenham defense.
Much better game now as Spurs have come alive – it was a terrible time for Newcastle to give that goal away and shows how Spurs are very dangerous.
This game is shaping up like the Everton games as Spurs are right back in it.
70 mins Darren bent in the inside right channel shoots over from a decent chance.
The game is very delicately balanced and the next goal will be vital.
73 minutes Milner mis-kicks the ball just outside the area but it bounces in front of him and he hits a beautiful shot from outside the penalty area to the kepper’s lefty. The keeper has no chance. A great first goal of the season for James Milner – just what we needed.
We must not give them another goal.
A powerful tackle from Faye takes the ball and Bent, and the ball goes for a throw in.
78 mins A defensive move by Big Sam as he brings on David Rozehnal for Michael Owen. Michael has had a decent game but with no luck.
Sam wants to shut up shot against a good attacking side. Not a bad move when 2 goals up and 12 minutes to go
David Rozehnal has been pur in front of the back two to mop up the loose balls.
Sam still looks worried on the touchline remembering no doubt that Spurs came back from 4-1 against Aston Villa to draw 4-4.
Given plucks two high crosses out of the air in great style – wonder if he’s been practicing – he looks confident.
Newcastle are slowing the goal down and playing it safety first. Is this the end for Martin Jol? That’s all the commentators are discussing.
The final whistle goes after 3 minutes of added time and Newcastle were just too good for Spurs who can blame slack defending for this defeat.
Teams:
Newcastle: Given, Beye, Faye, Capaca, Enrique, Geremi, Butt, Emre, N’Zogbia, Owen, Martins
Subs: Harper, Rozehnal, Barton, Milner, Ameobi
Tottenham: Cerny, Chimbonda, Dawson, Kaboul, Lee, Malbranque, Jenas, Zokora, Bale, Bent, Keane
Subs: Forecast, Tainio, Lennon, Gardner, Berbatov

Good result for us and hope we can win against reading
Good to see barton back on training
2 Hog // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:06
Another well ground-out result. Still to impress with a performance yet, however. But it’s the results that matter!!
Keep winning lads, even if it’s as averagely as this!!
3 Soren // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:07
Yeah good result. Only downside was that we conceded a stupid goal, and from there lost concentration in defence for a while. Still some work to do in the back. Also first half was too much high ball for my liking. Especially when playing Owen/Martins up front. But all in all good result and nice to see Barton.
4 Howie // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:07
wen barton came on did he help much as just before he came on it seemed like spurs would be de only team to score the 4th
5 Sinead // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:07
Good overall, defending was a bit dodgy now and then, cost us the goal like but other then that, everyone did well enough.
6 Obafan // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:07
Fantastic 3 pints, now we need to get some results away from home starting on Saturday at Reading.
What do you think about our central duo Cacapa and Faye? IMO they looked rock solid and were unhappy with the goal. Chimbonda had lots of space and time to deliver his cross, there is where it started to go wrong. But after 10 sloppy minutes we recovered and pushed on the see a fantastic Milner goal (a bit lucky but nicely placed in the corner).

wat im tryin to say is did he make a difference or was he unfit from lack of games
8 john75 // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:19
Martin Jol was right, Spurs are in a different class to us. They’re crap and we’re much better than them. Brilliant result! Altohugh to listen to the idiots on Setanat Sports, you would think that we were only there to make up the numbers and Spurs only lost because they were rubbish, not because we put three goals past them AGAIN!!!!! Haway the toon.
9 ToonKing // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:21
Barton fitted in well, he did good for the little time he was one.
@Obafan: I’m loving the Faye Cacapa partnership, rock solid. Also Enrique is great, he’s passing skills are far superior toe the average fullback.
Great result, now let’s put reading away and were in a really really good position.
10 ALEX // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:25
Happy but Martins and Owen just partnership donesn’t work
Not enough smart balls from the middle…
11 ToonKing // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:27
Yeah, it didn’t work, time for Smudge and Owen against Reading.
12 valle // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:29
Great fight, we put a nail into the coffin of one of the teams that were thought to be hard rivals for the european places… Also made Jol eat humple pie… Oh, and do urself a favour, go and read all the spurs fans comments, kinda refreshing after all the slack they threw our way when things were bad for us.

A win is a win is a win, grind is good, pretty comes later with the extra confidence.

I’m lovin it
15 Andy77 // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:37
Fantastic result, thought that we’d win but the strength of the defensive players for the duration of the game was an added bonus. Thought there was little support for the front two, especially as they were constantly chasing high balls. On the plus side, there was a good introduction for Barton and consistency with the back 4!!! Well done lads.
16 Murvar // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:37
I thought Faye was man of the match - just a solid defender, and Cacpa is a class act (as is Rozenhal). Still not so sure about Beye and unlike Toon King I though Enrique’s passing was poor especially in the first half. But they will all improve from playing together. To be a bit negative, I do think Martins is the worst forward outside the box I have ever seen in a black and white shirt. The number of times he miscontrols the ball or gives it away is astonishing and just puts pressure back on our midfield and defence. But IN the box, that’s a different story………….
17 ToonKing // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:41
hey Valle where do i go to read some Spurs comments and laugh in their face??
18 Alex // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:47
ùntill we went 2-0 up they were never in the game our defence was rock solid, then all of a sudden we let them back into the game. Why in gods name is Allardyce so intent on defending a lead instead of keeping up the attacking momentum. But all in all it is another good result, upwards and onwards we go .Also its nice to see 3 diffrent goalscorers this means there is goals throughout the side and not just from Owen ,Martins and Viduka.
19 valle // Oct 22, 2007 at 22:49
Murvar… Couldnt agree more about Martins, spot on. He seriously needs some concentrated training on his touches and technique

Great result…if not performance…it was fantastic to see “Boy Blunder” aka Robinson squirming in his seat on Sentanta as Sherwood and Mcmanaman slagged off the Tottenham defence no end…a refreshing change,
… isn’t it great to have a half decent bench with players that can make a difference.
Anybody else agree with BUTT being MOM?????
30 Jinal // Oct 22, 2007 at 23:02
I skipped class to watch the game but couldn’t get the stream to work for me
A couple of questions :
Did Emre add some creativity to our plays?
How was Barton’s performance? Did he have any major impact on the game?
What about Owen and Martins - how well did that work out up front?
From what I’ve read here, our defence looked solid. I’d appreciate all the info.
Cheers

Ha Ha, lol lol Jol!!!!
Spurs can break into the bottom three this season!!
“we got top five twice, we are so great, poor newcastle!!!”
Great home performance, gutted about the time and space for the cross that led to the spurs goal though.
We are still improving aswell!!!
35 valle // Oct 22, 2007 at 23:22
Jinal… I wouldnt say that Emre added that much and Barton ran allot but our formation was kinda 5-4-1 in the end so it was mostly defensive… Owen and martins didnt work, but to be fair we played an awful lot of high balls considered we used those two, but Martins control is also to pour for Owen to play of him… The defense looks allot better than what we have seen in recent years, but they still need to gel. Faye looks to be a top class defender tho, and allot of ppl (myself included) will eat humble pie… Our set pieces have had allot of work in training for sure, and our corners where absolute top class.
36 Velok // Oct 22, 2007 at 23:24
…of course the assist on 2-0 goes to Emre, as he actually took that corner.
Zog was subbed at the time of the goal…
A solid performance, it can only get better as they get used to play together.
The whole backline is new, in addition to Geremi, that’s half the team!
Of course it takes time to gel.. if we keep on winning in the meantime….
37 ToonKing // Oct 22, 2007 at 23:24
You guys should really read the spurs on their blog, it’s hilarious. Before the game : “Come on we have better players hahha, we are the better team hahah”
After the game : “Sack Jol, Sack the Board, Sack the players aarrrrghgghg were going down aggrhghgh ”
It’s great. I’m loving tonight.
38 valle // Oct 22, 2007 at 23:27
Toonking… I really like the ones where they blame Jol for firing us up with his pre match comments
39 ToonKing // Oct 22, 2007 at 23:28
A great post by a Spurs fan named Vinny
lol :
“We played with the cohesion and class of a 3rd hand robin reliant.
We played with the courage of the scared little boy in the playground that everyone picks on and can’t handle it no more.
Tactical balls up AGAIN with 2 of our only creative players on the bench - Berba and Lennon…beggars can’t be choosers Martin, you have to use these 2 with the current lack of creativity problems.
Team looked beyond recognition from the last 2 seasons not even premiership quality until a 10 or 15 minute spell…shock horror that was when Berba came on and showed how the ball can be contolled and passed and lead the line much better.
Then it all goes completely tits up again when invisible pussy man Jenas cannot make a decent challenge on Milner who stabs us in the heart and shoves Jol’s pre-match silly comments up his arse.
I then see Jol post-match mumbling incomprehendably saying stuff about cutting out the rubbish yet he says we looked great when Bale was on - for f*^&ck sake he was only on for about 10 minutes!…and then has the gall which I can only put down to embarrasement to say Newcastle aren’t fantastic anyway!…you f*&^king idiot, Sam Allardyce just totally outwitted you and still kept his dignity not once slagging off Spurs.
CLEARLY THE MANAGER HAS TO GO!!!”

42 ChrisL // Oct 22, 2007 at 23:37
I thought Owen had a quite game. For him to be at his best, he definitely needs the front line set up for him (i.e. Viduka), while Martins was able to just get on with it. I still wondered if it was one of those games for Owen, that he’d been so quiet that he might just pop up with a goal from nowhere.
I wonder what happened to N’Zog?
Barton looked promising & yet another good performance from Butt (made another friend tonight ;-).
Good team effort overall & I hope it continues when I go to watch them at Reading!!
43 valle // Oct 22, 2007 at 23:39
A few spurs supporters:
“Jol should have just shut up before the match, saying all the stuff about Newcastle wishing they were in our position. Not only is he single handedly ruining our season with negative tactics, he is talking us up when we are in no position to be arrogant. Shameful! Even I want Jol out now. Sorry Jolly!”
“i know we’ll leave defoe at home and play a 16.5m sack of ***** ahead of him and last seasons top scorer, cause im a fat cluelesss c@nt, and when Bale gets injured i’ll quash our attacking impotus even more by playing a championship quality midfielder and leave lennon on the bench. oooooh, newcastle aren’t in our league, ooooh I don’t fear the sack cause i’m a hard ********….Jol, talk is cheap, you suck, thanks for what you’d done but get out”
44 ToonKing // Oct 22, 2007 at 23:44

great win…but i was not impressed with Beye…and i also think it’s time to sell owen…he’s just too small…plus he lost a lot on his speed…he couldn’t do anything on the pitch… and we MUST get berbatov…he’s doing everything with such an ease…
46 ToonKing // Oct 23, 2007 at 0:04
Oh jesus not another Owen basher……….Owen Martins isn’t working, as much as all of us would have wanted it to work, that’s all.
Owen is our best player by far.
47 leo // Oct 23, 2007 at 0:04
i agree about owen, although he put his heart in, he has really lost his pace. he looked good on the ball and gave their defence some problems.
im glad we gave him a clap. show the man some respect, which is great
did the spurs fans turn up 2nite? didnt hear them at all.
who would we get in for owen????
berbatov is defo away in january, where will he go…. maybe toon as our superstar signing. maybe not. who knows…
spurs lost lots 2nite…
the game
their manager
self respect

Just read some of the spurs blog. Is it the nature of the blog but there seems to be an awful lot of anonymous comments. Think they’d have the ba*ls to identify themselves.

The second one did have names, though as Valle said they were not happy bunnies.
50 Ken // Oct 23, 2007 at 0:40
Butt was my man of the match, as well as the ‘match day sponsors’- man of the match.
51 Len // Oct 23, 2007 at 5:51
Here’s my read on Oba and Little Mikey. Oba is fast and strong and while he is not that big he can play up front on his own, see first goal. I think he is at his best playing a couple of yards further back and running at the defence. Little Mikey is a goal poacher, a very good one. He needs a conventional number 9 to feed off and someone in midfield who can thread balls through the defence to his feet. This needs to be clever stuff because he hasn’t got the pace he used to have. If you look at our tactics it is mostly the big hoof. The only time Emre gets the ball is picking up the opposing CB’s clearances. These tactics are not getting the best out of either Oba or Mikey. Current tactics suit Davies / Anelka / Diouf / Drogba types. If we played to their strengths with a short passing game I think Oba and Mikey would make a great partnership, seems to work for Rooney / Tevez.
52 Craig Allen // Oct 23, 2007 at 7:32
Yeah agree the Owen/Martins combination didn’t work that well but they needed a midfield to feed them balls instead of the lobs they were getting from deep defense and defensive midfield positions. Emre spent a lot of the time deep - should have played a bit more closely to the pair and feed them some. Emre was good in defense showing his pace and fight to win balls back in the midfield but the pair upfront were desperate for service - I hope this is not the last time Sam tries this combination as you can’t expect everyone to gel immediately. Try this sometime in the future again, Sam. I’m sure the midfield will gel the more they play together and when Barton’s fully match fit. We’ve really been fielding different combinations so it’s hard for the lads to get used to each other. But it’s also good as we finally have a bit of depth.
53 aaron d // Oct 23, 2007 at 7:59
Enjoyed this game, and had £10 on nufc to win 3-1 with martins to score first landed myself £730. Faye and Cacapa looked faultless, experianced and brave, can’t see Taylor getting back in the side for a while. Enrique and Beye also looked pretty safe and good going forward. Butt and Emre had a good partnership in the middle, some flashes of class from both. N’zobgia never really got into this game probably why he was replaced at half time. Martins looked a threat all game. Great win, if we win our game in hand will push us up the table and above Chelski. Bring on Reading
54 ChrisL // Oct 23, 2007 at 9:59
I think Len has hit the nail on the head, Oba & MO could work, it just didn’t happen last night.
But we keep banging in 3 goals anyway
55 steve // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:44
Good result even if we didnt play that great in the first half - what really spoilt my enjoyment of the game was the Setanta Sports commentary, it was totally biased towards Spurs and kept saying our defence looked shaky!!!!
We should all email Setanta and ask that they at least balance commentary with equal measure - that was the worst I have ever heard even worse than that tw@t Andy Gray!
56 ChrisL // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:54
Steve, you should have heard the Radio 5 commentary… Shocking.
Apparently Spurs were all over us, all through the whole of the 1st half. Of course it was funny when we went 3-1 up & suddenly Steve Stone & his mate changed their tune… Newcastle had suddenly deserved our victory!
57 David M // Oct 23, 2007 at 13:45
Wasnt Jenas just awful for Spurs? Even worse than when he played for us.Thank god we sold him. thought Btt Cacapa and Faye were immense. Barton looked good too and hopefully will only improve with games. Anybody heard the rumours linking S-S-S-sorry Can’t say his name,( the Scottish bastard who tried to ruin our club) with Bolton as manager. Talk about a death wish! still, maybe that’ll allow Sam to pinch Anelka…
