Newcastle Pursue Turkey’s 20 Year-Old Whizz Kid

December 12th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 33 Comments

The latest target that Newcastle United are said to be pursuing in the January transfer window is Galatasaray attacking midfielder Arda Turan.

Arda Turan - on the right - 20 year-old highly regarded in Turkey

The 20 year-old is highly regarded in Turkey as their brightest new talent and Istanbul press speculation says he has attracted interest from several Premiership clubs - including Newcastle United and Middlesbrough. If that is true we would have a good chance of attracting Arda since we already have one of Turkey’s best players, Emre, at the Tyneside club.

Arda is currently one of the rising stars of Galatasaray’s successful youth set-up. He was called into the full team in the beginning of the 2004-2005 season and played well in the senior side since then. In mid season he was loaned to Vestel Manisaspor in order to gain first team experience.

Former Turkey national football team coach Ersun Yanal gave Arda a chance in Turkey’s National team and Arda has already played 15 times and scoring twice for his country. Arda is noted for his consistent performances on the left wing but he is also capable of playing on the right side, as an attacking midfielder.

He has played 18 times with 6 goals for the Turkey Under-19 side. He played 6 times for the Under-21 side and has played 35 times for Galatasaray scoring 8 goals. From 2005-2006 he was on loan at Manisaspor playing 15 times and scoring 2 goals. He is just under 5’10” tall.

Comments welcome.

How many more players are we going to be associated with by the press. Is it little wonder us supporters are in a quandry.
It is strange how we lambast the press for most of the crap they throw at us, but when it comes to buying players we seem to believe them.
I for one will wait and see who Sam brings in, and i am not going to get caried along on the rumour train, as i am sick of being disappointed.

If this is the truth its probably the best news ive heard all yer, this guy is blooding immense hes a winger but he playmaker skills from the centre are also top notch, roeder wanted to buy him but didnt make a serious offer.

i love the press rumours about players, makes excitement for me…

  • 4 Ross // Dec 12, 2007 at 12:18

i know what you mean George.
considering we’ve been linked with diego (haha), i doubt i’ll listen to many of the transfer rumours for january.
arshavin seemed to be the most genuine one, and everythings went quiet, so who knows.
but we are linked with literally everyone under the sun, and it gets frustrating, because transfer rumours arent the same for us as they are other clubs.
99% of tabloid talk regarding newcastle united is sh*te,but oh well.
trurth in any story is a good sign, but i’ll just wait for january and see.

I recon we should buy Priskin from Watford he did well in hs first season in the prem when he was 19 hes 6 ft 2 and would be cheap, along with Gulsvik, they are posssiblities for cheap young target men.

  • 6 rich // Dec 12, 2007 at 12:38

it does my nut in, one day the press say ‘Sam Has No Money’ the next day ‘Newcastle linked with amazing players’

ffs. give me a break. PLEASE.

  • 7 John // Dec 12, 2007 at 13:20

  • 8 ToonKing // Dec 12, 2007 at 13:23

agree Tom_Tom, Priskin would be a good, cheap, young target man.

  • 9 Tom_Toon // Dec 12, 2007 at 13:26

considering sam had a look a lance davids i hope he had a look at Hammarby reserves and first team they have some brilliant young player and some young players ready for the first team, id like to see Erkan Zengin as a back up or fkirst choice right wnger.

  • 10 John // Dec 12, 2007 at 13:30

are you serious? Watford players ar enow good enough for the toon..Lads come on were better than that. I would rather spend no money than buy a cheap player from Watford.

If he was any good he would’nt be cheap . Ashley oung came from there but he cost 9 million .

  • 11 Otter // Dec 12, 2007 at 13:33

Actually, the second half of this clip shows exactly why he’s sought. Advances and keeps the ball under pressure, and seems to have an eye for a good pass after two or three defenders are drawn to him:

I would still put money on most of the January deals being close to done and dusted. I would be amazed if there are any really big money deals.

I reckon Sam is still very much on trial with Ashley and if he is still there in the Summer that is when we might see some big signings.

  • 13 Ross // Dec 12, 2007 at 14:40

judging by the two video’s he looks like an excellent little player like.
i mean, premiership defences will obviously be alot more hands on than others he has faced, and he would be braught down quite a bit, but he looks class with the ball at his feet, and i fully agree with Otter regarding him having a knack for drawing in defenders and playing a killer pass.

  • 14 Southside Jordy // Dec 12, 2007 at 15:47

Someone else for the wing?? Do we need them, i mean wot about Zog, James, Emre and Duff?

  • 15 Rich // Dec 12, 2007 at 16:09

Emre is not a winger hes a central midfielder, i think we need another winger personally if we have duff n zog for left and milner and another for the right we would be well covered

  • 16 Tom_Toon // Dec 12, 2007 at 16:17

Erka Zengin would be a good choice bet winger in the sweedish league would be quite cheap at 500k, still only 22

  • 17 Hadrian // Dec 12, 2007 at 18:02

this lad has talent , and again another fabulous youngster we are being linked with.
regardless of how many are acurate , in general they have all been quality , so we are defo looking at the right kind of players.

  • 18 Tom // Dec 12, 2007 at 18:38

it could be true after all mort said he wanted to bring in some youngsters!

  • 19 toonoholic // Dec 12, 2007 at 20:46

the lad is too good to be linked with us .
unless we splash money I see no reason for him to join us

  • 20 scott 9 // Dec 12, 2007 at 22:24

i think this guy could be a realstic target hope we signhim he looks good i agree with george though were linked with to many players and come transfer windows it ends in disapointment remember last jan when we signed gooch a f***ing yank

  • 21 scott 9 // Dec 12, 2007 at 22:25

not that i hagve anything against yanks they are just not good footballers apart from the odd expection mcbribe is the best your gonna get

  • 22 Aussie Geordie // Dec 13, 2007 at 0:03

We should also be looking at Nuri Sahin. Superstar.

  • 23 wsq // Dec 13, 2007 at 3:08

The guy doesn’t look awkward on the ball unlike n’zoggy with similar pace, looks like he can shoot with both feet, younger than n’zoggy, i’m not sure if he’s taller than zoggy. If he’s as good or better than zoggy you tell me why not.. he has a reputation for accurate crosses and passes.. hmmm that is so much better than milner’s blind crosses.

  • 24 wsq // Dec 13, 2007 at 3:10

well mort said something about signing young players.. well put your money your mouth is.. if this is not young enough than means we willl be signing 16 yr olds from afar is that legal? get kerlon haha

    KERLON for united!

someone can punt up the ball to his head and it’ll stay there until someone like joey bartons whacks it off his head

  • 25 Len // Dec 13, 2007 at 3:24

Personally I find all this transfer talk entertaining. None of these players are half as obscure as the ones recommended by you lot. And btw spending a lot of cash gets you a 28 yr old who is padding out his pension fund, buying wisely (maybe from Watford) gets you Arsenal. Anyone called Ard cant be all bad and at least hes above 5 ft. Key is to have some idea how all these players come together to make a team.

  • 26 aaron d // Dec 13, 2007 at 8:42

A 17 year old Nigerian called Macauley Chrisantus, sounds good, he top scored with 7 goals in the under 17 world cup, is tall and strong and at 17 can only get better. Too late now signed for Hamburg, but this are the sort of young players we need to be looking at.

  • 27 aaron d // Dec 13, 2007 at 8:45

Another one Ransford Osei 17 year old Ghanian, scored 6 goals in 7 games at the u-17 world cup. One of the 50 Most Exciting Teenagers in World Soccer Magazine last month, still plays in Ghana and would cost pennies.

  • 28 Jeff D // Dec 13, 2007 at 10:20

Arda Turan is a serious, serious talent, and his agent would be doing him no favours advising him to join Newcastle over european top teams. That said… If he was daft enough to choose Newcastle. Then it would be a a coup on the same scale as the Owen And Shearer captures. Believe me this kid really is special !!!

  • 29 Tom_Toon // Dec 13, 2007 at 13:41

wsq, Daniel Braate of Bolton is also a po at the seal dribble and know that you cant use it in this league, its pointless.

Looks like a very technical and talented player..

Wonder how he would do his tricks against rio, vidic, terry, hyypiä…

    ============================

im sure you wouldn’t struggle too much, he has already played agains’t liverpool and did an excellent job.

Rio and Vidic will not be able to react in time for his tricks, he pulls tricks and great speed, very unexpected.

Im sure he will be a superstar if he joins any club in the premireship… hope to see him soon

Looks like a good target for Newcastle..but if he is really that good, he might go to bigger clubs..

“Rio and Vidic will not be able to react in time for his tricks, he pulls tricks and great speed, very unexpected.”

Then he would have no problems with Hyypiä.. :)

  • 33 Kein // Dec 14, 2007 at 12:54

    Kein

“Then he would have no problems with Hyypiä.. ”

Im not sure if Hyypia was playing but he already played agains’t liverpool last year, and the defense had a lot of problems with him, check out Liverpool vs Galatasaray 3-2 on Youtube, you should be able to see what he is capable of.

    regards,

    Tuncay
