  god i hate our manager, 2 shots on target, imo that doesnt even deserve a draw, and then when we are 1-1, he sets up for a draw, shocking.

  We may have lost (and to 2 debatable goals as well) but the desire was there and we did cause Chelsea some problems. As was said in the previous article, more performances like that starting with Man City on Wednesday will go down well and get the results we need to see.

  Along with greater consistency, I now hope that January will see one or two players come in who will improve the quality of the squad.

  In Jan we need those players who can create our chances, as we can’t seem to do that at the moment. Shocking amount of shots on target, we need some skill and creativity. Unfortunatly i don’t think sam will get any players like that.

  this is were statistics lie…….if one watched the game one could see that we did have around 10 good chances and Chelski were only saved thanx to some last ditch defending and goalkeeping, like Duff and Oba’s chances.

  I was listening to the game with my new cell mates and i reckon if i was out there we would of won 3-1.Im the best player at newcastle thats pretty obvious unfortunately im a daft twat and will be spending a lot more time in my new cell.Its a pity i wont be able to play against man city because without me theyll beat us aswell.

  it doesn’t have to be on target to be a great chance.

  like Duff’s chance at the end, Oba shoot it across the goal to the far post where if Belletti had a shoe size smaller Duff would have connected.

  Well just 1 point from the last 3 games so we must push for all 3 on Wednesday night. Man City are good but if we play like we can then we can do it.

  Exactly right toon king. i watched it aswell and the stats do tell a different story.

  The problem is people are looking at it in the wrong way. We didn’t go to Chelsea to attack, we smartly set out to do a job on a good chelsea side who are unbeaten at home for a long time. Therefore the amount of chances we had in comparison to them is irrelevant as we were probably going to try and absorb their pressure and then occassionally hit them on the break. Which is exactly what we did and we could have scored maybe two more goals today if we had been a little less wasteful of our chances (cough cough martins cough).

  It is much like when Man U went to Liverpool. It was easy to see that their plan was too absorb liverpools threats and then counter attack. That is what they did and they won the match. If you actually watched the match you would see that Man U contained Liverpool quite well with them not being much of a threat and only having half chances. However, if you check the stats of that game it would seem as though liverpool were hard done by as they had much more shots than Man U and more possession.

  Get rid of Sam - If he played attacking football in that second half we would have got the draw or maybe even have won, Chelsea were on the backfoot untill we took Smith and Martins off and that just invited pressure from them which eventually they scored even though it was offside - thats not the point - the point is, with positive attacking play we would have got the draw or win

  I think we need better center mids. We didn’t control the ball that well from what I saw; they were pressuring us quite a bit until it was tied at 1.

  i was working today so ive only just got to see the highlights: butt with a howler x2 how can you miss a ball, muppet. Smith obviously didnt do much today? I didnt evne see hm on the highlights.

  This match showed us, hos important it is to have creative mf. In first half we were forced to defend. Their mf were stronger than ours. When Nzogbia, in second half, played lv, the team createt and forced Chelsea to defend. LB and CM is our weakest link with players out of pos. Faye showed the way to day, he was good in front of our def. If BS want our support, he must make a team, who can play attaching 4-4-2 football. That is what we want and what we like.

  Dragoner - Im sick of reading your pro-Fat Sam comments.

  We royally suck at the minute.
  IF, and I mean IF, we were playing attacking, attractive football and having a pop at opponents, then I’d just about accept where we were in the league.

  The trouble with your arguement is this, you say that we set out to do a job, absorb the Chelsea attacks and hit them on the break…”like Man Utd did at Liverpool” - EXACTLY! Like MAN UTD did…

  We are not even a tenth the side Man Utd are. They CAN get away with doing a job on teams in the top 4 etc, because they can defend and have a better squad of players.

  We have to play to our strengths. Going to Chelsea to try and absorb presssure and perhaps come away with a point is not the way to go about it - not yet anyway.

  We must be looking to win matches, particularly when teams we come up against, like todays Chelsea side, are vulnerable.

  This is what angers so many fans with Fat Sam. He clearly doesn’t see it that way and tries to set up our starting 11 to absord the opposition.

  We are not good enough. When we go a goal behind (one clean sheet in 15 matches currently) we rarely have anything in the tank to get back on level terms, let alone win a damn match - even against ‘lower’ teams.

  If we could only start with a 442, Zog/Duff, Milner on the wings, Vid and Owen/Martins up top, Emre and Butt/Faye in the middle, back 4 of Beye (what a class act he’s turning out to be), Cacapa, Taylor, Enrique? (The new Luque?).

  I cannot get behind Fat Sam while he spends so much time thinking about the opposition. Why not think about us, our players and detail every match like we’re going to bloody well win it.

  Trying to keep this discussion more adult like, I reject what you say entirely.

  You miss my point.

  You seem proud that today, we went to Chelsea and absorbed pressure, ‘like Man Utd’…

  We didn’t do that at all. They attacked us and went 1-0 up through poor defending, again. (There was a hand-ball but it was more ball-to-hand). We were certainly set up to absorb, you’re right there, but this team is only capable of this to a certain extent, not like Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea are etc.

  My point is, we should have gone there and set up for a win.

  You see, we set up to stop them playing, that’s great if you can pull it off, FACTS show that we cant - so what was the point?
  We couldn’t do it against Derby, Wigan - why would Chelsea be any different?

  However, if we took a more, Keegan-like approach, and thought, “let’s really get at them today, Ben-Hiam and Alex ain’t played much together, their keeper is suspect”…….and so on.

  We may well have still lost, but by crikey I bet we’d have had more than 3 shots at their goal.

  That’s all I’m trying to say, we MUST be more positive, we MUST play to our strengths and we MUST get this through to Sam.

  Drop Smith, play a 442 and watch the difference.

  edd–I’m frustrated by Sam too, but I just don’t think a half season’s enough. When Allardyce was announced, I cringed. I really didn’t want him, but he’s here.

  Moreover, he’s here with a proven record of achieving more with less. (yes, modest achievement, but still achievement by their more modest standards.) Bolton were never very pleasant to watch, but they were effective. And the resources they had pale in comparison to ours.

  Isn’t it possible that Fat Boring Sam is on a learning curve? Maybe he’s figuring out how to manage a real big club for the first time. And that takes some time.

  We can’t succumb to the knee-jerk impulse to boot him in the arse and clean out the offices. St. James has had that sickness for too long, since Keegan bit the dust.

  7 managers in 10 years is not a recipie for success.

  Sam is not producing beautiful football. He is building the foundations.

  I think his sides in the last few games have been somewhat more attack oriented. At Wigan it was dire and we lost–thanks to a spectacular, unstoppable free kick and a dull and determined Wigan side. Today it almost succeded, albeit against a half-powered Chelsea. We deserved a draw.

  I don’t like Sam. But he needs more time. Not a nice thought, but seems true.

  One other note–of the players you mentioned in your 4-4-2 paragraph, five of ‘em are Sam signings–Viduka, Faye, Beye, Cacapa and Enrique. I think it’s safe to say four of those five have been good. Cacapa had an awful game or two and Enrique’s still unproven. But these signings could work out in the end.

  I agree about Smith, though. I don’t see him as useful, really.

  As sick as it makes me to say it, Sam needs more time.

  Moving on and in response to shirts.

  I am all for continuity.
  I just dont think Sam is the man for Newcastle.
  He may well be learning, I’d be astonished if he isn’t - but what’s he learning?
  What he’s done thus far is show that he likes to play odd formations and play players A) out of position and B) play players who aren’t performing (probably due to A).

  If Sam just stop f%cking around with the team and players and just said, “right, here’s what I think my best 11 is and we’re going to play 442, pass the ball on the ground where possible and really have a go at teams” I’d be his biggest supporter.

  I’d love to give him time, but the more time he gets while he’s consistantly getting it wrong, means LESS time fore someone else, should Sam be sacked.

  All the problems they have..eh, no, we’ve problems, ye Mr Grant, ye don’t.

  So Grant no, that’s where your wrong, Given or the defenders blocked those chances, they worked bloody hard to do so. They deserved the point.

  Just cause they’re a “Top” rich team doesn’t mean they deserve everything. So what they’ve a “depleted” side, please, they are one of, if not the richest club in the Premiership, they’ll get over it. You want depleted..look at us last year Mr. Grant.

  Edd, how would you have responded if we set up an attacking game and lost 4-1? If you know people, you’d know that attackers live on confidence, and confidence is low atm after the draw to derby and the loss to wigan. However, confidence was built after we showed in the first half that we could match them man for man (not really but till a certain extent) and we went out in the 2nd half looking much better.
