Abdoulaye Faye will have a fighting chance of making the team tomorrow night against Manchester City at St. James’ Park.
Faye - no break in arm following a scan
That’s the good news for Big Sam today, as Faye emerged from a scan on his injured arm, that showed there is no break, and he has a good chance of lining up against the high-flying Manchester City side.
The two injuries Newcastle had on Saturday were caused when Faye collided with Smith, and Faye fell awkwardly on his arm. But Alan Smith was concussed, and finally had to leave the field with 30 minutes still remaining in the game. Alan then spent Saturday night overnight in a Newcastle hospital as a precaution.
But we’re not sure it’s ever wise to risk a player, who has just had a concussion, and Big Sam spoke to the Evening Chronicle today about Alan’s condition:
“Alan Smith is extremely doubtful for tomorrow night.â€
“Don’t forget he was knocked unconscious at Stamford Bridge and had a bad dose of concussion, and it does not look as though we have enough time for him to recover.â€
“But there was nothing on Abdoulaye Faye’s scan and he should be OK for tomorrow night.â€
Faye looked very strong in his midfield holding role on Saturday and he certainly looked the massive physical specimen he is, at 6′2†tall. Quite a presence in our midfield was Abdoulaye on Saturday.
Sam Allardyce spoke about Faye playing midfield against Chelsea:
“He likes this position as much as he likes playing as a central defender and he is adept in both of them.”
“Chelsea had some good players in their midfield on Saturday in the likes of Michael Ballack and Mikel, and Abdoulaye more than held his own against them.â€
So it looks like Faye will be OK tomorrow but Smith will not. And we believe the game could be a good game to watch since Manchester play some good football and Sam will have Newcastle attacking and going for the win.
A win and 3 points would be so good tomorrow night.

Aye, we’ll play 4-3-3/4-5-1, and altough I hope you’re right Ed can’t see “Sam will have Newcastle attacking and going for the win” happen.
We’ll play the “containment” game yet again and with some luck we might snatch a goal and withstand the pressure and get all points. However, I do think we’re gonna get a bore draw tomorrow.
Btw, Owen will start, Butt and Faye is also guaranteed starters (and Smith would have been if he wasn’t slightly injured). Midfield will most likely be Faye/Butt/Emre. Attack? Think we’ll have Owen/Viduka/Duff.
Really, Smiths injury might be a blessing since it more or less “forces” SA to play Emre (if he doesn’t surprise us all with 3 defensive midfielders, i.e. play Geremi in place of Emre).

If SA plays a midfield of Faye/Butt/Geremi, he should hope to the dear Lord that we win! There is no need for three holding midfielder when we now know that Faye can play that position well.
We might see this line up, which is not too bad anyway.

Good to hear that Faye is fit. Saw the Chelski game today (one of my mates Tivo’d it & I burned it to disk). Faye’s passing seems considerably better than the other players who’ve been in the central midfield and we know he can defend. I really hope that we go out and play to win. The containment strategy is shite and we’re at home. Play to win, play to our strengths (which sadly, still don’t include our defense), and negate their strengths. Keep them under pressure by attacking. Force errors and set pieces in their end of the pitch. I’m glad Duff is back too. While he didn’t have a lot of time on the ball against chelski, he didn’t waste his possession and he looked good.
As for the Sacking Sam bit. I agree with those that think that binning the man would be a setback. He needs at least this season. We can reevaluate in the summer. Rushing to sack him is no different than a panic buy frenzy and we know how those usually turn out.
Howay the Lads. Three points tomorrow. We bloody well need them.

we all glad smith is not playing however we all now hes just going to walk back into the team if if we win 5 -0 because i like the guy but we all now hes sams golden boy.
