West Ham striker Dean Ashton could leave West Ham United, his London club in January, and Newcastle United are said to be interested.

The Star is reporting today that St James’ Park could be a possible destination. Ashton is said to be unhappy at his lack of opportunities at Upton Park, and is reportedly mulling over a move with Manchester City, Tottenham, Newcastle, and Portsmouth all said to be interested.
Ashton was dropped for recent matches against Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea, although only yesterday West Ham manager said there was not rift between him and the player. Curbishley even suggested Dean was OK with the reasons he had given him for this lack of playing time recently.
Alan Curbishley said yesterday:
“We wanted to go 4-5-1, and Carlton Cole is more suited to that.â€
“We have managed to get Dean through the first half of the season, and we have got to be careful with him.â€
Despite promising to open contract talks before Christmas with Ashton, no offer was made - and now the player is unsure whether he plays a major role in Curbishley’s future plans. The West Ham manager was without 13 players for Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat at Arsenal, but the highly-rated forward was still unable to get into the starting line-up. Ashton is said to be anxious to impress new England boss Fabio Capello, but has been unable to do so in the big matches because he is being left on the bench.
Dean has scored five goals in eight starts this season and is widely regarded as one of England’s brightest attacking talents – but it seems that Curbishley favors Carlton Cole in a lone striking role. Dean Ashton is a good young striker, and would be well received at St. James’ Park, but we’d face a lot of competition for Ashton, who is rated around £10M.

But him immediately. Shearer believes this guy is the perfect foil for Owen and they would form the best partnership in the Premiership.

I’ve wanted ashton at nufc for agggeeesss and keep getting stick of my mates because of it! I can see him as the next shearer and think he would be good cover for viduka too. seel owen and hand ashton the no.10.

I have always said he is the closest player I have seen to Shearer since the man himself. He would need to get fitter and lose a little weight but once he does that he would be a fantastic foil for Owen or Martins.
He has the potential to be a big, strong, prolific striker and those are rare these days. He plays the target man role very well, my only question is whether he would be fit enough to make an impact this season. Having said that I would buy him in an instant if available.
He would love to follow in Shearers footsteps I think. I still don’t know why we didn’t go for him a few years back!

as i have said on here before, he should be a number one target. As written above, if shearer was manager he would come, however, he isn’t but he is club ambassador (what ever that means) surely the club can utilise Shearer to assist in securing possibly one of the brightest young strikers in english football. The season Ashton played for Norwich in the prem league, they were awful, came bottom but he still managed to score 16 goals, what does that tell you about the lad?!!! Buy him now please Sam!

How can Ashley be tight? He’s just spent £200 million of his own money to rescue us from Shepherd and his debts.
The problem with Mike and Chris is they don’t want to buy the players Sam wants.

james- agree, they are not tight, they have seen what throwing lots of money at players under shepherd has led to, nothing!!!! exept one of the largest wage bills in the league for a mid table team.
Mort has however stated an interest in building for the longer term, Ashton fits this mould as he has at least 10 years of top flight footy left in him (Injury free we hope), so hopefully he will be one they do sanction! As above, he is a class act and will bring players into the game wingers etc who so far this year have looked lost without a good strong holding centre forward, however, what ashton adds to this is deceptive first 5 yards pace and two amazing feet that can send out “shearer like” bullets!

But the problem is, Ashton will not have been on Sam’s transfer list. They can only go after those players (Brown, Ben Haim etc).
They can’t buy players against the Manager’s wishes.

If Ashton became available I think we would be in for him this time. It’s an opportunity we can’t pass on this time around. I think they would soon write a cheque for £7-10 million to sign the lad. It’s an investment at the end of the day, the way england are going I could see him as being an england regular in a few years time.

Get him please ! Even if big Sam was to go, at least good young quality players would be invested in. This is where the chairman comes into his own, all big money moves must be sanctioned, where there is young talant. Managers come and go, the board and the club move on. We will need top quality to convince managers like Mourinho to come to this club. I think Sam sould still be given more time, but as transfers go you have to plan canny.

if he didnt we would have gone bankrupt and he would lose most of his investment that he put in… he is tight i am telling you. and as soon as we are producing good players and high turnovers he will sell assets and strip the club. just watch

Ben Haim is not better than what we already have on the contrary, we don’t need him.
Wes Brown, prooved that he is a good defender in the EPL, but we more need a LB and a creative midfielder than a CB…

Leo - why would you invest in a manager that you don’t like or want, and are going to sack in the summer?
This summer when Ashley finally gets his own manager in charge (Shearer) he will spend whatever it takes to make his successful.

A must buy, definitely. And he´s not injury prone. I don´t remember him getting injured ever since his crewe days except when he was called up for england! In my mind this guy will last longer than Shearer. Shearer was at his best with little pace. Something Ashton has never needed.

Been saying get him all along.Shearer can be instrumental in this, as he was with Owen but not as manager.Could link the two up for club and country.Please Mr Chairman release the funds for this one cos it will be money well spent….ask 52000 for their opinion on this lad WE ALL WANT THIS ONE. Ben Haim comes recommended from a young Geordie lad who is on the books at Bolton and he reckons he is actually better than Faye and he told me he would benefit the Toon and so far he has been correct on that one….agree.

sheperd just spent the cash that wasnt there yet , its not like we couldnt have survived . it was just obviously better for mort to have that cleared .
glazers have borrowed a fortune against the club itself and there still throwing out 100mill in transfers .
i think mort made more of a fuss about that debt than was needed , bit of a smokescreen imo .

manunited are able to spend so much on debt just because they have so much assets and they have so many means of making the funds back, compared to newcastle

this is what makes us a ‘big club’ tho leo , 52k fans every week and replica shirts mean we have one hell of an income .
its why wenger always go’s on about the potential up here , we could spend with the rest of them due to our fanbase , and in reality we have since the prem started . why im not so happy with ashley , as bad as freddy was he went out of his way to make cash available , granted he borrowed against money we didnt have yet , but we were always due it .

i agree with scotch mag to injury prone. we wonder why all are players are always injured look at there injury rewcord before we sign them. he way aswell sign darren anderton
