Sam Wants Kevin Nolan at Newcastle

January 6th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 61 Comments

The Sunday Sun is reporting today that the mystery player Sam Allardyce is pursuing his former captain Kevin Nolan at Bolton Wanderers.

Kevin Nolan - Sam is after his former Bolton captain

It’s not at all surprising that Sam has been given some flexibility to bring in a new midfielder at Newcastle, given the problems Barton has with himself, and the up and down displays of Turkish International Emre.

However, we had thought that Andrei Arshavin, the Russian football captain, would be the player Sam would have tried to bring in during January, although he doesn’t have any Premiership experience. Sam has since said that those are the players he wants to target during this transfer window.,

Nolan has not been in particularly good form this season and it may be that new Bolton manager Gary Megson may be willing to let Kevin move on. With Sam’s unwillingness to play Emre in the attacking midfield position in Barton’s absence, it may also be that Allardyce may want to cash in on Emre. And of course his old club Galatasaray will be interested, as will quite a few other clubs. However, it’s not clear that Galatasaray have the cash needed to buy the Turkish international.

Sam Allardyce knows all about Kevin Nolan, and you have to believe he knows just exactly what he would use him at Newcastle United. Sam remains convinced of Nolan’s ability, with the midfielder’s goal-scoring capability an obvious attraction.

Galatasaray have also been keeping an eye on Emre, and his agent Ahmet Bulut said yesterday:

“There are a lot of clubs interested but they have to speak to Newcastle.”

So whether we get Nolan in for Emre remains to be seen, but we hope Sam is not going to let all our creative players move on. We haven’t got too many of them to start with.

What do you think?

Comments very welcome.

Looks like i was right :) and :(

Its a 6 mil bid i think and its depressing.

  • 2 Ross // Jan 6, 2008 at 15:44

i’m sorry, but if we let emre leave, to bring in kevin nolan for around 6 million pounds i will be devestated.
genuinly. i actually dont know how i’d cope with letting our ONLY decent playmaker leave, to bring in another bolton player.
    this is sick.

  • 3 Tom_Toon // Jan 6, 2008 at 15:47

Its not the fact he is selling Emre that is the problem its the fact that:
Who will he replace him with, or will he?
Its a sign of how he is trying to turn us into a bolton-esqe team.

  • 4 Ed Harrison // Jan 6, 2008 at 15:50

Sam needs to keep creativity at the club - look how Emre turned the Everton game with his pure skill.

  • 5 ObaFan2 // Jan 6, 2008 at 15:50

I hope it’s just media rubbish again, We are a mf down with Barton awol but cannot let another (Emre) go.
If he is bought I’d be disappointed.

  • 6 Ross // Jan 6, 2008 at 15:55

i read in the papers today sam was going to the board to request the dismissal of the black stripes from our shirt.
along with this, sam posed the idea for a name change thinking “newcastle united” was somewhat boring.
Boltyne FC is the proposed replacement, and talks are apparently ongoing regarding both.

  • 7 StevieA // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:02

I bet Nolan score 10-15 goals a season though from midfield and that’s what we need. Emre will never do that, he should but he never will.

When you take into account how many goals Barton can score, and you add those goals to Nolans then we should have a lot more goals coming from midfield.

I think he will be a good signing. Just a feeling I have about him, the reason for his dip in form is that he wants to move onto better things I think.

  • 8 Hadrian // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:03

see , he’s building a bolton he could never build without more cash .
he may think thats ok if he wins trophys , ofc he wants 5 YEAR to try .
well he can sod off , im at my wits end with him now .

  • 9 billy // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:09

dont care if emre goes he spends most of his time on his arse rubbing his shins. we need better than nolan though.prem experience is not important if your a good player get arshavin.

  • 10 Bobby Ollox // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:09

The mighty Kevin Nolan ? For F*cks sake…

  • 11 Pete // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:11

Oh dear, Kevin Nolan? 6 million?
Just can’t believe there is any truth in this tbh, let’s wait and see

  • 12 Mehzeb // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:12

Nolan isn’t as bad as some of you are portraying him to be. He’s a decent midfield man with, good passing and solid tackling. The man has very little creativity, and thats not the only worrying part. Zero enthusiasm. He lacks skill and dribbling ability, and some might say he’s a poor man’s Parker. But hey, that’s the kind of player Allardyce thinks we need. Can the fans do anything? No. But we can watch our club turn into Bolton, with Megson turning Bolton into something completely different.

    Sad. Truly sad.

The Sunday Sun ??? HA HA HA

  • 14 dragoner // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:18

the source of this news is poor. However, if this does take place i will NOT be happy

  • 15 Tom_Toon // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:18

    im not poor :(

  • 16 Leo // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:23

would rather have kevin davis or nic anelka but nolan would be ok

what about arshavin, am gutted that we are going to get any attacking creative players. ever!

  • 17 Andy1 // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:25

Nolan is a good player but too similar to what we already have and is probably only suited to 4-3-3 which hasn’t worked to date. He has the potential to score a lot of goals but so does Barton. He’d be a good signing, but not if Emre goes. We need more creativity - not less.

What position is Arshavin? Watched him on youtube - seems like a pacy striker.

  • 18 carl // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:28

i will not be happy if he signs nolan end of!

  • 19 Tom_Toon // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:29

arshavin plays behind the front 2 or on the wing

  • 20 heads23552 // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:37

it sells papers, and gets the fans going, I think the media would be bored if we do ok. A crisis is much better. If there is no news lets write about Newcastle. Ignore it all. Just enjoy the game.

  • 21 JP from The Rock of Gibraltar // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:40

If we’re going for Kevin Nolan then why in the hell did we sell Parker???? In my opinion Parker is much better than Nolan. If Big Sam sold him in the summer window only to have more cash at the time to sign more squad players it’s worrying, considering he was our captain at the time. Maybe it turns out good but right now it all looks a bit strange. With more players coming in from Bolton it does seem like Sam is trying to make us into Bolton. If he does I just hope he injects the flair players that this club starves as he couldn’t with Bolton’s budget. Only when Big Sam signs a quality, creative player will I have complete faith in him.

  • 22 scott9 // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:43

kevin nolan would be a great signing but not in they expense of emre i think we have enough room for him without letting emre go.
however i think maniche and definatley tiago would be better options as there more creative but if sam brought in.
    brown
    arshevin
    nolan
i would be more than happy cause for january signings thats decent.

  • 23 trojan // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:49

i hear he wants us playin in all white now as well … lol

  • 24 Marosh // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:50

I don’t think that making Bolton from us is a good idea. The way Bolton plays is good for small local club but not for huge club like we are. Now I don’t know if I want Sam to stay, because he maybe can lead us into top 5 in next 3-4 years but I’m not satisfied with the way we play … I want us to play entertaing football. Hope we can do that and have some results of course too.

  • 25 steve // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:55

This is truly depressing news, Kevin Nolan has been booed by the Bolton fans quite a lot this season as he’s apparently been playing poorly, the fact he keeps getting dropped by both Sammy Lee and Megson shows that Sam has lost touch with reality if this story is true.
What a midfield we’ll have Barton, Smith, Butt and Nolan - no pace, no skill, no creativity, no fckin good.

  • 26 spen // Jan 6, 2008 at 16:59

i cant understand the logic in selling emre and bringing in nolan? this surely cant happen it will turn us into a midtable club. i know thts what we’ve bin achieving but we’ve bin vastly UNDER-achieving since the bobster was sacked.we have so much quality in the squad now and selling is the wrong option we need now to stop bringing in average players and look at players towards the “world class” title which to be fair no one can argue we already have owen, given, martins etc. buy players like nolan and the best we can hope for is uefa cup 7th or 8th.just buy quality i mean we have a billionaire now we CAN break the top 4………..

  • 27 Hadrian // Jan 6, 2008 at 17:01

makes me weep everytime i see sven going in for a player , didnt we get this the wrong way round , surely sam and sven belong at each others club.
if we get nolan , thats butt , barton , nolan , smith? as CM’s for our club .
we only need 1 of those types of player imo .
dragoner , you want to judge sam on his squad?
you want him to stay years and spend millions before you make a judgement? isnt it obvious now where he’s heading?
the big mouthed arrogant ‘top man in his field’ needs to addapt to newcastle , not supporters the world over addapting to him .

  • 28 bod // Jan 6, 2008 at 17:11

team for stoke given in goal rozenhal taylor faye enrique roz at right back midfield smith and butt in centre duff on right? zog on left viduka owen up front milner on bench

  • 29 JoshI // Jan 6, 2008 at 17:11

Seriously i don’t think Big Sam is that stupid. I don’t think Mort will let him buy him even if he was, if we can see whats happening, then the board surely can aswell.

  • 30 JoshI // Jan 6, 2008 at 17:12

Thats not a bad side, although id change emre for Smith. can’t have 2 Battlers, the strikers won’t get any service.

  • 31 iain // Jan 6, 2008 at 17:13

i wouldnt have complained give the choice of barton/nolan had we rather got nolan.

but to get rid of emre for nolan is mental.

but i can guess why, duff in todays mila says the nutrionist says he cnat eat bread or some shit like that. can you imagine sam telling emre he cant eat his favorite turkish meal.

also in the guardian apparently durin ga pre match team talk one player asked sam during his speech about stoppinb the oposition what he wnated our team do when we had the ball.

  • 32 bod // Jan 6, 2008 at 17:18

josh1 agree i would have emre on in place of smith

  • 33 Tom_Toon // Jan 6, 2008 at 17:30

roz at rb is an interesting one, i think he will excell there, he is pretty fast.

  • 34 Tom Cairns // Jan 6, 2008 at 17:32

allardyce came out and said that we will not be selling any player unless seriously lucrative offers come in, so why are so many on here so certain that we are ‘replacing’ emre with nolan?

to start with the nolan story is only paper speculation, and if we did get nolan he would get us goals which we desperately need at the moment, he isn’t a creative midfielder which we do desperately need but who’s to say we wont bring one in as well? allardyce obviously doesnt favour emre but tbh thats not a big surprise, he is very talented and has the ability to turn games but more often than not he just doesnt turn up which most definitely isn’t allardyce’s type of player and i would agree with that.

  • 35 thelongshanks // Jan 6, 2008 at 17:45

sell carr and emre bring in arshavin and good young right back and nolan isnt good enuf sell ameobi and buy ashton.come on tha toon!!!!!

  • 36 iain // Jan 6, 2008 at 20:06

tom c - well if he signs nolan he isnt going to play him and emre together is he.

  • 37 spen // Jan 6, 2008 at 20:14

we were woeful again.tom_toon roz clearly never excelled at right back and still continues not to excell as a newcastle player and why has did nicky but take it upon himself to shoot everytime he got 3 yards outside the area when he couldn’t hit a cows arse with a banjo and i couldn’t remember smith on the ball only sliding about.we need to buy quality bring on man u:(

  • 38 john // Jan 6, 2008 at 20:27

nicky butt shoots cos no one else has the balls to shoot

  • 39 john // Jan 6, 2008 at 20:34

TOM TOON. rozenhal will excell at right back what an expert you are. he was as bad today as you know about nufc. ha ha

  • 40 john // Jan 6, 2008 at 20:43

    tom toon wants his asshaving

  • 41 Tom_Toon // Jan 6, 2008 at 21:02

Well i thought he would, hes quick, hes weak, his ball control isnt bad. If he was at CB today im convinced he would have been worse.

  • 42 spen // Jan 6, 2008 at 21:19

he would hav been worse at CB but thats supposed his best position he likes to have to much time on the ball and doesn’t read games well enough to be in the premiership but taylor at RB and roz in the centre would of been worse taylor was wkd again we just lack a playmaker and i fear the russian isn’t the answer but werder bremins diago would be a better shout

  • 43 john // Jan 6, 2008 at 21:24

defenity agree diego would be a great signing we need someone like him who is prepared to run with the ball at his feet and create things. why is everyonr raving on about arshavin they couldn’t have seen enough to say he was good

  • 44 Bob // Jan 6, 2008 at 22:31

Nolan will score more goals than the others from midfield, but we need someone who wil make goals 4 others.

Although, many are saying that hes trying to bring Bolton to Newcastle, well didn’t Bolton finish in top 6 last season!

  • 45 Willzy // Jan 7, 2008 at 1:34

with bartons absence mayb buyin nolan isnt a bad idea, but i would prefer someone a bit better.
diago / arshavin will help with the creativity of the team.
selling emre should be avoided, the quality of the squad is low as it is.

  • 46 Len // Jan 7, 2008 at 3:44

Frankly Chris Mort got it right when he said we should not buy anyone until BS sorts out what he has got. How can you buy new players when there is no pattern, no plan, no clearly defined need?

  • 47 chuck // Jan 7, 2008 at 5:37

Yeah, what the hell! why dont we just trade teams with Bolton ,they allready know how to play Sam`s boreing style.
Think about it, do you want to pay your dosh to be entertained or bored to death watching a bunch of Neanderthals kicking the shit out of the opposition and scoring from set plays, cause thats whats in store.

  • 48 Ausgeordie // Jan 7, 2008 at 8:28

I think this is rubbish and Sam knows it would not please the fans or the rest of the squad as it reinforces that he is a one trick pony. Same reason that Ben Haim wont be joining us. I’d like to see us make a grab for Melberg from Aston Villa. Proven premiership player, good injury record and would be another captain at the back. I hear good things about Arshavin and trust what others have seen although a right sided midfielder is needed as well. Finally defoe or Crouch up front and I think we would be looking solid.

I think well lose Martins especially as he is not cup tied and with his form I’d would rather have defoe. That being said I’d rather have Martins than Owen as I think there is more to work with.

Its a shame that Smith has not shown any form as he was always said to be held back by his lack of appearances. Well he has had about 17 in a row bar one or two suspensions and has done very little to affect results in that time be it assists or goals. And no one or two of each is not enough for a striker/attacking midfielder.

    This really makes me laugh.

Newcastle United linked with Ben Haim and Kevin Nolan.

Manchester City linked with Podolski and Mancini

    LOLOL

  • 53 Passing Game // Jan 7, 2008 at 9:19

we cannot let emre go, he would have been the player on the pitch yesterday who could have created something with the final ball. we lacked any quality in that area in their final 3rd, smith is not the answer, he was a waste of space out there, we have a ball winner and a tidier in butt.

  • 54 MOY // Jan 7, 2008 at 12:06

Signings are a responsibility of the manager as well…I would sympathize with Big Sam if he were not given funds. But if he had 6 million but chose to sign something other than a creative player , then it’s clearly his fault.

We’re clearly playing slightly better at the moment , but if there’s no player signed with the legs and creativity , it’s just gonna be the same old story. And i’m really frustrated by this lack of spark , and failure to score goals.

Come on Sam ,I’m sure we’re big enough to go for bigger and better players than the likes of Nolan…

  • 55 Newcastlefan // Jan 7, 2008 at 12:49

Hope this is tabloid trash. Big Sam is starting to play players in their correct position. Please do not shoot yourself in the foot even more. We know we need stability, please do not build Rome in a day! We have a lot to get used to. We certainly need a creative midfielder who can score goals. This is not the first time Newcastle have gone through the press gang, Bobby Robson went through it. Come on Big Sam.

I’m shocked with all the rumors that Emre will be leaving.. Devestated!!
I don’t know what Sam is thinking, but I can’t understand how he can leave Emre out of the team.. He should be a starter!!

Why don’t we just play with Shay Given, Steve Harper and Steven Taylor as creative midfielders to make sure we kill the beauty of the game once and for all!!!!!!! (NO OFFENCE TO PLAYERS NAMED)

  • 58 john // Jan 7, 2008 at 14:02

why be shocked that emre is leaving whats he done since coming here hes hardly scored any goals and is always injured

  • 59 lt // Jan 7, 2008 at 15:13

    nolan is shit

  • 60 Simon P // Jan 7, 2008 at 15:18

This has been twisted by the media out of all proportion. The truth is that Big Sam wanted to splurge his wad on the Nolan sisters.

  • 61 GrantosUK // Jan 7, 2008 at 15:57

If we lose Emre then Sam has lost me to I’m afraid. We had no creativity last night, we need butt to tidy up and Emres touch in the final third, not Alan Smith running round like headless chicken.
