Newcastle United got probably the toughest draw possible today in the 4th round FA Cup draw, when they were drawn away to Arsenal, should they get through their FA Cup 3rd round replay against Stoke City on 16th January.

Sam Allardyce - toughest draw possible in FA Cup ![]()
Suffice to say we think this will now be another year where Newcastle will finish the season without a trophy. We drew Arsenal away in the League Cup and were beaten 2-0 by an Arsenal second string team in September, and now we are drawn away again in the FA Cup. What going on here?
Newcastle today confirmed the FA Cup Third Round replay with Stoke City will be held at St. James’ Park on Wednesday, January 16, with a kick off time of 7.45pm. The replay will not be televised.
So we’ll have to first of all beat Stoke City in the replay - which itself will not be a particularly easy task. But then it will take a monumental effort to beat the best team in the country right now, even if Arsenal play their second string team. But we’re sure the boys will go there and give of their best.
That’s really all we can hope for. But to think how much easier the 4th round could have been. Well, that’s life we suppose - not too good right now for Newcastle United, unfortunately.
Here’s the full draw for the FA Cup 4th round and the replay dates for the 3rd round.
Full draw for the FA Cup fourth round:
Arsenal v Stoke City/Newcastle
Coventry v Walsall/Millwall
Oldham v Huddersfield Town

who cares anymore! we wont get through and stoke will show how bad things really are next week. like shit am i paying my money to watch big sams team.forget it. i love the toon but i dont enjoy watching our games anymore, how can people stick up for sam when hes got the worst managerial record at the club for years and he constantly plays smith.sorry mr ashley but thats one less ticket through the turnstiles.
2 Howie // Jan 7, 2008 at 17:17
a right stinker of a draw. at least big sam wont be sacked if we lost to a team arsenal
3 carl // Jan 7, 2008 at 17:18
our next 3 games, manure, stoke and bolton i believe will beat us.i have no confidence in our performances or manager at all.

God, I’m sick of NUFC playing the Arsenal. I think we play them more than Boca jr. play River Plate.

Carl - Calm down fella!
Christ, you make me feel like an optimist……
As for stopping going to matches. We always think we are better supporters than that. Sticking with your team and going to matches is what sets newcastle apart from other clubs like the Boro. Remember not too long ago we were bottom of the old second division getting 25,000 people at a match.
I know its frustrating to go and watch shite. I come down from Glasgow every match to watch the lads play crap, and for over three years its been particularly boring to watch. I’ve had a season ticket for 16 years and seen us in worse situations than this.
We cant be armchair supporters, its in our blood!

Well we are not lucky in this tie, but first the team needs to prove that they can beat Stoke at home. And that is not going to be easy as well. Especially with Smith in the team, he is a waste of space and I wonder when SA will see that. Come on how ridiculous that such a freak is our captain. We are slipping further and further down.
7 Leo // Jan 7, 2008 at 17:31
bollocks. its like a conspiracy against newcastle
previous years always drawing chelsea now its arsenal. when they are strongest… typical…

There aint any point in getting too pissed off about. Face it we are not gonna win out this year anyway, nor do we even have a team playing well enough to have a decent cup run.
10 Howie // Jan 7, 2008 at 17:34
damn damn damn damn also.

arsenal fan here - we had to play Liverpool away in both cups last season only 3 days apart at Anfield. and we went and won both games. no one gave us a hope but we did it. so dont go all doom and gloom, you never know in football.
As you know Sam hates Arsenal from his bolton days and still does. he will get the players massively fired up for the games against Arsenal. I just hope the Arsenal players manage to avoid injury. you will prob play out of your skins again like you did at St james park but I still think we will have too much for you on both occasions. and yes wenger will prob play vastly different players in each game.

This is a season for team building..I couldn’t give Two hoots who we play in the cup.
As long as we improve and the team gets stronger, anything else is a bonus this season.
Sam needs plenty of time to get the team working, most of the players need to improve as we have not been a decent team for quite a few years.

Does any1 remember the carling cup tie against the gunners? I thought we played v well, ye they scored two goals but it was in the last couple of mins and oba missed a sitter at 1-0. I dont think we will do to bad against them.
17 Southside Jordy // Jan 7, 2008 at 17:59
Great that means another ruddy trip to one the most expenive grounds going, oh and to top it of the missus support the Gunners!
I agree totally with Jamie, we need to sort out the team and not worry about the cup coz we just not good enough!
18 Southside Jordy // Jan 7, 2008 at 18:00

20 Punk Skunk // Jan 7, 2008 at 18:01
Well said Chris M, that’s the attitude!..We’re Geordies, not Smoggies (fair weather fans!)…Lets start living up to our billing everyone!..WE ARE THE GEORDIES, THE GEORDIE…Etc, etc…Bollox to optimism/pessimism, support is required, regardless!..
…HOWAY THE LADS!..
21 UTD111 // Jan 7, 2008 at 18:03

22 Jamie // Jan 7, 2008 at 18:07
I just hope that Martins stays and we can get the best out of him again.
23 Eve // Jan 7, 2008 at 18:47
IF and that’s a big IF. If we beat Stokes then fine. Arsenal, we’ll go, we’ll play, we’ll probably loose unless our defenders and Given can hold out a pretty amazing Arsenal team. But our bigger, more pressing problem is Stokes.
Now Stokes, there was a gap, a small gap in the level of football, like our players are probably better. They are. On paper they definitely are. So why didn’t we win. Because they literally ran down every ball, earned every inch of grass on the pitch, tackle after tackle, run after run. They kept getting players behind the ball, getting back to defend. We might have technically have been the better team but they played with so much more heart and sometimes when there’s a difference in class between the sides, work rate and passion can make up for it, Stokes did that. They worked their asses off and with a bit of luck earned a deserving replay.
24 ewan // Jan 7, 2008 at 18:57
Didn’t Newcastle draw with Arsenal in the league? Have some hope and optimism guys.
25 Tripp // Jan 7, 2008 at 19:09
Eve, agree about the work rate. So important. How times have you played your arse off and beaten a side that was technically superior. It’s happened to me (both ways) loads of times. Prem is no different. I just wish the lads would show up with approximately the same amount of vim and vigour each and everymatch (or at least 80% of the time). I know we’re all human, but the passion seems to go missing far too often this season.
26 john // Jan 7, 2008 at 19:11
will we get 6000 tickets to go to the emirates if we get through
27 keeganpleasecomeback // Jan 7, 2008 at 19:29
with any luck Smith will be suspended for the match against the gooners….or Fatduka gets injured (gastronitis from all the pies he will eat) so we either play smith as a striker or not at all….
Also sick of BS.. but hey what can we do we just have to swallow it and see if he can turn it around, which is very doubtful -obviously our new board/owner dosnt have the balls or money to sack him…toon forever (also in the championschip league - it seems were heading that direction)
28 Leo // Jan 7, 2008 at 19:40
keeganpleasecomeback i am telling you mate, the reason bsa was smiling so much at half time and the end was because he was the winner in both the pre match, and the half time pie eating contest…
29 steve // Jan 7, 2008 at 19:51
I’m just gonna ignore anything Sam says and pretend we’re playing with ten men (I.e no smith)
Kinel I feel better already
come on the toon, let’s stuff arsenal - and stoke
30 rlw // Jan 7, 2008 at 19:52
we can beat stoke and Arsenal but a slime chance never no though but we should not play given in goal for fac the last time we played harps in every round we got to the final 2 times in a row but big sam i said would be rubbish no beleved me but i am right wrong taactics for the toon bring wor kev or bobby back.

32 Northumberland Magpie // Jan 7, 2008 at 20:00
It would be typical if Newcastle beat Arsenal but lost the Bolton match. Dont worry keep the faith
If we wanted to win the cup would have had to play the big guns at some stage
33 Leo // Jan 7, 2008 at 20:17
more like
alardyce

viduka
34 billygee // Jan 7, 2008 at 20:58
I think Sam should play a weaker Newcastle team like Arsenal and Manure usually do. You never know it may just surprise the gooners. hahahahahahahaha
35 ToonKing // Jan 7, 2008 at 22:12
Come on John the Duke surely deserves a spot on the podium
.
Anyways lads it not so bad. I’m actually happy that we got Arsenal and not Chelsea, with our luck those were the only 2 choices.
Arsenal can be beaten and we are the perfect team for that, like it or not. The Gooners can be beat or at least stopped by physical play, and that we are capable of playing. Villa showed it, Boro showed it, we showed it in the league and hell even Burnley proved it. Plus we always play better against the big teams. Also the Gooners are engaged in every competition possible they won’t be able to keep it up.
On the long road road to the FA Cup final we are bound to meet and beat some of the big boys too, so get used to it.
We will beat Stoke 2-0 and then go on and knock Arsenal out winning either 1-0 or 2-1. MARK MY WORDS.

ToonKING whatever youre smoking -ill have some of it
37 ToonKing // Jan 7, 2008 at 23:23
i’m sorry i’m not sharing , i only have a limited amount myself .
38 Tom_Toon // Jan 7, 2008 at 23:25
We just need to add the last piece of the puzzle, a good creative midfielder and we will be flying.
39 Tom_Toon // Jan 7, 2008 at 23:26
and maybe a new manager if we dont improve when we have a creative player.
40 ObaFan2 // Jan 8, 2008 at 0:08
Talked to a couple of Gooner mates (if there are such things lol) today and told them who they had drawn in the cup, they just laughed……Both had watched the game on Sunday said Butt was rubbish and also noticed no midfield.
. Sometimes poorer opposition raise their game for big matches……. maybe we will against Man U and Arsenal.
Well what do you expect with a dazed Smith in the middle, even undazed he’s no good in the position falling back and becoming a sweeper at times and then when he pushed forward there was little creativity or link up play through him.
Gotta be a fix though drawing them again
41 Aussie geordie // Jan 8, 2008 at 1:28
I’d give anything to see a live game just once and a trip to St James is a dream of mine. Getting up at 4am and watching the shit we have been playing recently is hard so I dont know how the travellers do it
42 Karl Fenham Hustler // Jan 8, 2008 at 9:56
Arsenal.. It’ll be the young side..
You’ve got to play a hard team at some point, best to get it out the way now.. Go out all guns blazing and crush the confidence of all there youth/reserve players : ).. Piece of piss
