FT: Manchester United 6 Newcastle 0 - Magpies Humbled

January 12th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 72 Comments

manchester-united-fc.png nufc-crest.png

Newcastle were humbled today when they conceded six second half goals to go down to one of their biggest defeats ever in the Premier League.

But the real scary thing is that if Shay Given had not been in top form, and clearances off the line by Taylor, Enrique and Viduka - then the score could easily have been 12-0, maybe even more. That’s the truth.   :(

There is no doubt that this is a defining point for Newcastle United football club. The game – were outplayed and outclassed by a side we probably didn’t deserve to have been on the dame field with. Right at the end, when it was 6-0 Alan Smith, our captain added to Newcastle’s despair ads he received a straight red card for something he said to referee Styles.

But in the first half the lads battled well and Shay Given was in his top form again and we survived to half time without conceding. In fact after 39 minutes Owen scored a perfectly good goal which was given as offside, which TV replays proved it wasn’t.

But for Given, Rooney could have scored a hat tick.

After half time Manchester United raised their game further and Newcastle crumbled. The first goal on 49 minutes, was from a Rooney free kick , for a non foul by Smith. And Ronald shot low under the wall, and it deflected off Given’s hand into the goal. The last time I watched a goal like that was a 10 year-olds game we watched last year.

The Newcastle gave a perfect exhibition of how not to defend a free kick as they all jumped up and the canny Ronaldo blasted a low ball under the wall.

The second gaols (55 mins) was a giveaway as Cacapa laid the ball to Enrique in the penalty box – when he probably should have hacked the ball upfield. Jose didn’t have any option but to play it back to Given whose low clearance hit Cacapa and came back to Giggs who laid it across for an easy goal for Tevez. It was a comical goal for the Magpies to give away.

The third goal, and they were starting to come thick and fast, was world class on 70 minutes. Ronaldo controlled a high ball into the box dead with his right foot, and then stroked the ball past a helpless Given in one flowing movement. A wonderful goal to watch.

The 4th goal after 85 minutes, was another classic as a beautiful high through ball was put in the net by Ferdinand on the volley. When he played the ball was 5 yards goal side of all Newcastle defenders, but was not offside when Rooney played the ball. Another breathtaking goal.

Then Ronaldo scored his first ever hat-trick for the Red devils as his shot was deflected by Enrique and the ball went over the unlucky Given. But not surprisingly Ronald deserves credit for the goal, which was after 88 minutes.

This was becoming a slaughter now as Newcastle fans were hoping for the final whistle, but Manchester United scored their 6th goal after 90 minutes. Tevez powered the ball off the inside of the cross-bar. TV replays suggested the ball was not over the line, but nobody really cared at that stage of the game.

This was a terrible second-half display from the lads, and to maintain his ridiculous disciplinary record at Newcastle, our captain Alan Smith got himself a straight red card for something he said to referee Rob Styles – we hate to think what he said.

The first half was good for Newcastle but after giving away two terrible goals the lads basically fell apart and were just completely outclassed by a team that was a completely different level.

Comments welcome - if you don’t feel sick at the end of this report.

Ed could you change humbled to humped ?

  • 2 Jon // Jan 12, 2008 at 19:45

I don’t like Damien Duff. He’s not good enough and he’s too left footed.

  • 3 Hadrian // Jan 12, 2008 at 19:47

    i feel sick :(
need some comunication from the club , need to see they are heading in the right direction .

  • 4 Obafan // Jan 12, 2008 at 19:50

I hope that now soon the new manager will be known or otherwise MA and SM are 2 businessman who don’t know how to work with a football club…

  • 5 Ross // Jan 12, 2008 at 19:54

that was one of the most depressing things i’ve had to sit through for a while.
and you know whats coming next…shearer.
    and he’ll fail.
we need super kev, shearer as his right hand man.
come on mort, ashley, and whomever the f*ck has a hand in decisions at newcastle united.
bring back the messiah, nothing could get much worse tbh.

  • 6 Gresh // Jan 12, 2008 at 19:55

This is really sad….I really really really hope that atleast now MA would see the need for a world class manager and not some Harry Redknapp to turn things around!

wht do u guys think of Otto Rehaggel?
on the other hand…how would u rate Gordon Strachan?

  • 7 Ashton // Jan 12, 2008 at 19:56

    Assapa !

  • 8 Warwick Hunt // Jan 12, 2008 at 19:56

Who on Earth can we get to sort out this mess I wonder. We are looking towards free fall here.
At least we had a shot at Goal I suppose!!!
But I’m very worried, thank god we didn’t get Redknob. We need a miracle here, MA must be thinking what have I bought. These troubles go back a long way.
Some people have been shouting for Keegan as Manager but if you remember it was him that got rid of the reserve team and I think we are still paying for this.

  • 9 rob the geordie // Jan 12, 2008 at 19:57

who would wanna manage us after that performance….lets not kid ourselves we are in a fight for safety right now…if the mackems win tomorrow we are only 6 points off bottom 3,jose would never sign for us

  • 10 James // Jan 12, 2008 at 19:57

I expected us to get thrashed and wasn’t surprised at all. I actually think Pearson was quite clever by playing the same midfield pairing that Fat Sam would have played to show how much Sam’s decisions have taken us down.

Without a manager and not happy with the system or situation, you cannot expect the players to be playing with confidence. The minute the first goal went in we all knew it was a case of how many. The squad is so low on confidence it is frightening. Fat Sam has killed Newcastle and taken us to depths we haven’t seen for a long time. His big money buys have been awful. Hopefully Smith is sold with Barton asap. Butt should be asked to leave in the summer. I lost count of how many times he gives the ball away. During the first half it was over 37 times.

The gulf in class was massive. We looked like a 2nd division team.

On the plus side, it’s just the performance and result that was needed to gee Ashley into action, and bring in a world class manager and world class players. He has high ambitions to take on Utd for the title eventually, well today showed him how much work he has to do.

  • 11 Stantos // Jan 12, 2008 at 19:58

not shed a tear since that 12 point clear debacle but today is a very very sad day. Unless things get sorted we’ll be down come the end of the season !!!

  • 12 carl // Jan 12, 2008 at 19:58

i would never want keegan back ffs. we need to go forward not backwards. tbh todays game was written off anyway, but the defending was shambolic and smith should be sold

  • 13 goalcentre.com // Jan 12, 2008 at 19:58

If not for Given or Enrique… i guess a double digit score line is not a problem.

  • 14 valle // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:00

Looking forward to see how the whiners will blame this one on Sam even tho he is gone… On another note, the 2 players that need out of our side the most are by far Butt and Milner. Its not that our defense played that bad, but they where constantly under pressure, simply because we threw the ball away time and time again. After some time against a team like Manure, ur defense will get breached if that ur game… And to the guy who wanted rid of Duff… How on earth can u single out Duff as bad in this game, he was actually one of our more penetrating midfielders.

  • 15 tommyy // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:01

we are in the poo, i am under no illusions that there is a bigger picture here either. We will NOT get a decent manager in, and we WILL slide the table. There is no point denying it. Im sick of this, we should have kept Same untill we had a replacement in a concrete deal.

  • 16 shirts // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:01

Disagree about Duff. He’s better with his right than Milner ever was with his left. And he knows how to pass the ball.

And N’zogbia’s turning out to be a real Milner: Fancy-dancery through a couple of opponents then coughs up possession rather than make the simple pass to the open man.

  • 17 Obafan // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:01

rob the geordie - indeed I can’t see any manager who really is jumping to take command of these average players..

  • 18 Shaun Dean // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:02

Yes i know he was played upfront by himself when he prehaps should not have and had a lack of service however I dont like Micheal Owen. Seriously overpaid, clearly does not want to be at Newcastle United, living off previous reputation, lack of passion, played 29 games for Newcastle in 2 and a half years. Hope the new Manager gets rid soon as but unfortunatly it will probably be Martins who will no doubt go on to bigger and better things.

I also DISAGREE with Duff not being good enough.

  • 19 carl // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:02

milner, butt, smith, barton, need to be sold , they just arent any good. bigsams left us in a right mess, but hey, i guess it cant get any worse can it?

  • 20 James // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:02

Another plus, is that hopefully you guys can start to understand why I said recently that Enrique is class. Once that lad gets up to speed he will be very hard to displace as left back. He stood up to Rooney very well today.

  • 21 Lyubo // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:03

Please don’t blame Given or Owen - our keeper did a mistake with the second goal, but saved no less than 5-6-7 more. Owen was left to work on his own, and till he was on the pitch there were team efforts for link-up play and ogranising attacks. Milner is very very ineffective, he can’t cross or shoot and his industrious displays mean nothing at the end.

Viduka is a lazy mercenery, Rozenhal is a waste, Cacapa is slow and clumsy. We do need quality - more creative, flair players such as Zog and an ambitious manager with NUFC at heart.

  • 22 Steeley // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:04

Well, at least we know that Pearson wont get the job! lol
It was embarrassing really, but as someone mentioned above, hopefully this will kick Ashley up ther arse to get someone in better than the likes of Mark soddin’ Hughes!! I dont think it will be a case that none of the big managers will want to come to us after seeing that, because it just makes it all the better for them if they succeed.
I think it may take someone with real strong feelings for the Toon to be able to turn this one round though….Shearer or Keegan, or both together?

  • 23 carl // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:04

i bet big sams laughing his arse off right now,

  • 24 sparetheman // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:04

shirts, N’Zogbia is our best player without question this season. Sloppy pass I agree, but he’s the only guy with real quality.

Keep N’Zogbia, Duff, Given and Taylor. Flog the rest of ‘em.

Can’t believe people want Keegan back. It’s not the 90s guys, things have changed. Lets move FORWARDS, as Carl said.

  • 25 Ashton // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:05

  • 26 ToonKing // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:06

Today was a landmark….iether for happier times to come or total free-fall.

I’m really embarassed today, i cancelled my clubbin’ plans. :( sad sad day this was. I’m not showing my face in any forum or football loving circle anytime soon that’s for sure.

Mike and Mort better act and act fast, and appoint someone capable. If they get someone in th Harry mold were doomed, we’ll be playing Leeds before we realise what happened.

  • 27 Shaun Dean // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:07

Owen, Butt, Carr,Capaca and Barton if some one would take him are the ones i would get rid of.

I would not get rid of Milner he is still is young and has enough potential to improve further.

Now Newcastle is the Joke in football. No one fear to play against us.

How shame for our players in dressing room ? or they don’t care so much about themself ? interesting.

  • 31 Edd Case // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:08

I can honestly say that I feel utterly depressed and the most upset I’ve ever been as a Newcastle United fan.

We are so pathetically inept as a football team, it really, really scares me.

If we don’t get in someone of the calibre of Jose Mourinho, based on that “performance” at Old Trafford, we are seriously ‘going down with the Mackems’.

I’m nearly in f$cking tears I’m that upset.

Some of the performances by the players today were disgraceful…

Butt, Smith, Cacapa, Carr, Duff, Milner, Rozenhal, Owen, Viduka…

The onyl player for me who can walk away from that game with ANY form of pride is Charles N’Zogbia.

Enrique, to be fair to the lad, was really up against it but on occassion, showed class and given time, he’ll be a cracking left back.
Cacapa was dreaful, yet more passes across the defence, rather than getting rid of it.
Given, ok, so he made numerous great saves but was still piss poor at times, flapping at crosses and kicking the ball straight at opponents.

Taylor was average but I saved one name until last…

Alan Smith - what a complete waste of space.
A captain of our football club? FU@K OFF.

By the way, where was Emre? He’s no good on the bench…
No big Sam but same garbage line-ups.
    433 again? Or 451?

Here’s the stats from the game…

    EMBARRASING.

    21 Shots On Target 5
    9 Shots Off Target 2
    7 Fouls (Conceded) 7
    16 Corners 1
    1 Yellow Cards 1
    0 Red Cards 1

PS - Man Utd stats on the left side, just incase anyone was confused.

  • 34 Hadrian // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:11

Taylor should be captain . has his errors but they are rare , and the heart the lad shows is what we are all about .

  • 35 carl // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:11

    stoke will be laughing

  • 36 Toony // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:11

I think I remember once seeing Chelsea score 6 at St James’ with Jimmy Greaves scoring some of them. Probably about 1959 or thereabouts. otherwise i can’t remember a sixer.

    How low can we sink?

Sam’s idea of how to choose a captain. Who is the most likely to get sent off?

Smith is the worst midfield player I have ever seen playing for Newcastle. With him and Butt together the “giving the ball away” ratio must be at it’s peak.

The boss should have followed his Spurs mate and lined-up the new manager before getting rid of the old.

We are a laughing stock. I’m off to shoot myself.

  • 37 KevinHann // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:12

Pure fact - next season we will be playing at least 2 games with Stoke.

Start praying they qualify for the Premiership.

  • 38 briss // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:14

Did anyone else notice how bad enrique played today? he was the worst player most of there attacks came fom his side and he helped in the second goal debacle. UGLY! he gives the ball away almost as much as butt! If we are going to talk about who to keep its Owen, Duff, N’Zogbia, Taylor, Smith (BUT NOT AS A MIDFIELD PLAYER!!!!!) Milner and Viduka can score goals if we give him and owen some chances. our midfield is our main weekness, puttin way too much pessure on the back 4!

  • 39 lewdavies // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:15

Just out of interest, exactly what could Shearer do with these players to turn things around??????????
The bottom linr is that 95% of NUFC players are not premiership class and todays match proved it.
I dont blame Owen, if he isn’t getting any service, then what do you all expect him to do??
    Milner and Butt are AWFUL.
Man(ure) got rid of Smith because they could see he wasn’t good enough.
Finally, Pearson was brought in originally to sort out the defense, and has failed 100%.
Right now we stink big style, in every department, and it hurts. There is no quick fix and things will probably get even worse before they get better.
    Ouch !!!!!!!!

  • 40 keeganpleasecomeback // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:16

massacre is not a too strong word but we will bounce back as soon the new manager is in place and a decent 442…we all know wegot the players as long we keep the ball on the deck we’ll be all right and then next year with a LOT of cash we will be a force once again………come on shearer

  • 41 Clouded // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:20

I’d agree with you Edd Case, Jose Enrique looks promising. He did alright i thought, he just needs a run of games in the 1st team. Taylor has been good today, alot of last minute clearances, Given has been okish. N’Zogbia…we are very lucky to have him, he is a quality player, shame he didnt finish that run at the defense with a goal!

Smith and Butt dont deserve to be in the team. Michael Owen i really do have to feel sorry for, he’s simply not getting the service. Duff and Milner were average i thought today. Wont even mention Cacapa and Carr though.

  • 42 Shearer's the man // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:24

I just can’t believe I’m reading some of this nonsense. I think the 95% of our players are not premiership class is the best one!!!

We have world class players that all other non top 4 teams can only dream about.

None of our players are bad players. They are seriously lacking confidence and direction and the attitide of the fans (a la comments like these) does not help.

I mean we’ve even started on Given now!

Michael Owen - First name on the England team sheet, best goalscorer of his generation. Bad luck with injuries and not sweating enough so he’s now “a disgrace”.

Nicky Butt - 250 games for Man Utd in a midfield that already has Keane and Scholes.

Alan Smith - Player of the season at Leeds when they were in the Champion League SF. Unluck y time at Man Utd with a horrible broken leg.

Geremi - Plays for Real Madrid and Chelsea but not good enough for us.

Duff - Rated one of the best wingers in the league until he comes to Newcastle.

Viduka - Most goals per minute on the pitch in the prem last season. Doesn’t run around like a headless chicken so he “couldn’t give a toss” for us.

Cacapa - Player of the year for the French Champions.

I see we’re even turning on Milner too now…

I could go on with the players who were great players until they came to Newcastle…

Maybe it’s the way we transmit that to these players?

  • 44 Peter // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:26

When i started reading the comments i thought this was a joke site. Enrique was/is terrible, how anyone can say he is going to be a class LB is beyond me, finally some comments saying how s**t he is near the end of the page.Thank You and yeah Smith, don’t get me started.Taylor and N’zogbia can stay, the rest can all go everyone of them. Just my opinion.

  • 45 valle // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:27

I actually thought Enrique did quite well, i was disgusted to see Shay trying to blame his mistake on Jose tho… Owen is THE only world class player we have atm, cant understand why somre ppl want to sell him. Duff is also good and will prove usefull once we get a new manager in who will hopefully add a few qality faces… Nope, a way of keeping the oponents from attacking is by keeping possesion, with that in mind we need to sell Butt and Milner. And dont talk about milners potential, the guy is 22 and have played top football for 6 years, he should have learned to pass the ball for crying out loud

  • 46 Ronny // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:28

theres no other way of putting it

  • 49 Eve // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:33

Shearer’s the Man..it’s a state of mind. We lost we have to blame someone. Be it Given, which I think is a wee bit harsh seeing as he kept us in it all match, sure like some people only compliment forwards and attacking players. But whether it’s him or someone else they always have to blame someone. In fairness though, United were that much better then us. Fabulous side.

  • 50 James // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:34

Valle - I agree about Owen. He is far too good for Newcastle. First half, one chance, and the ball was in the back of the net before the Manure goalie had moved. Wrongly given offside, but a sheer class finish that Martins would never have taken.

Owen needs service to score. Any manager in world football would tell you that. We all saw how bad Rooney is as a lone striker at the world cup last year. So how the hell do you expect Owen to be better as a lone striker? Neither of them should ever be put in that position.

If Owen had been playing for Manure today he would have scored a hat trick.

  • 51 James // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:36

  • 56 Obafan // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:45

Shearer’s the man - If you read my comments often then you’ll see that I hav always been hard for Milner and I am convinced that he has got not the flair to be on the wing. He needs to learn so much

    I also believe Enrique did not play that well at all. This is why I think so;
    1. He kicks the ball away instead of trying to pass into the feet =W ManU start to attack => again pressure for our defence
    2. Most of the danger came via our left side, euhm oh right that is where Enrique plays
    3. The 2nd goal is not Shay his fault, what a back pass was that; I think the fault started with Cacapa who had to kick the ball away, but what Enrique did, was poor.

  • 57 lezb // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:47

Many years ago I was an extra in “The good the bad and the ugly” Todays game offered 2 thirds of that title. How can Nicky Butt have been playing so long and not have any passing ability whatsoever????Smith is a walking disaster but with his red card we can look forward to him being sidelined and give some one anyone else a chance. No Emery no LuaLua no flair only fear from Pearson We knew we had little chance of getting anything from this game give youth a chance.Who dare,s wins.

  • 58 Normag // Jan 12, 2008 at 20:47

Confidence is very important in football and when a team have zero of it, its not very easy to play good. BSAs has spread a defensive attitude by constantly talking about how we need to defend well before we can attack. This maby leads to make the players think defensively, and in my mind negative, and the confidence drops. We need to think we can do somthing.

Someone says our players isnt good enough, but i think most of them would have played for most PL clubs(exept the top four of cource!). We need a new manager with a attacking and positive attitude. One who belives in the players, and think that we can win matches. Not a manager who goes to middlebrough and is happy with a draw!

With the right attitude and belife in our selves, i think we have a lot more to come up with!

stop all this nonsense, its not anyone’s fault, its just that united was in top form today. it happens, newcastle, roma, doesn’t make any difference. it was just UNITED!!!!

  • 60 ToonRich // Jan 12, 2008 at 21:03

Just got back from Old Trafford, I cant believe what I was saw… Players were still shouting/arguing wih each other, Cacapa was useless, as was Butt and Smith to some effect.
All credit to Man U, I can honestly say they were the better team - Ronaldo is AWESOME.

I thought Duff did too much moaning and not enough with the ball and again there was no service for attack. Given doesnt trust the back four to play it short so he kicks long to our tallest(joke) striker MO!!! Play to feet guys!
Ashley better get someone in of a high quality - as Pearson just used sams tactics, and they show they dont work.

This is BFS’s legacy…so thanks very much BFS.

We were always going to get a hiding here today, that was clear some time ago, and the real shame is that BFS was not still in charge as he may then have done the decent thing, resigned and saved us millions of pounds into the bargain.

Anyhow…heads up, forget today and look forward to next week. A couple of wins? A new manager? Who knows in the world of NUFC? If you cannot take it then f**k off and follow the mackem inbreds down the road.

By the way…this is our 15th consecutive season in the top flight of english football. I would gladly have taken that at different points during the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s. Don’t panic and keep the faith.

lol, thought some of u guys would try and blame this on Sam even after he aint here no more to hide from reality

  • 64 valle // Jan 12, 2008 at 21:41

Cacapa is good and wasnt at fault today at all… We need to play a passing game against top teams, its that simple, the only truly bad players where Butt and Milner

  • 65 ToonRich // Jan 12, 2008 at 21:49

Valle, Cacapa was sat on his ar$e for Ronaldo’s third - simple he went to ground instead of defending on his feet! Some of his back passes to Given were terrible, put Given under a lot of pressure.

Also the reality is, we played the same as we did with Sam at the helm, and lost heavily. 4-5-1 was never going to break man utd was it?!

  • 66 Warwick Hunt // Jan 12, 2008 at 21:52

Who is able to turn it around?
Jesus, Mohamed, Budha, David Ike, God???
    We are in real trouble.

  • 67 Hadji // Jan 12, 2008 at 23:08

Newcastle needs to start from the scratch cause at the moment they wouldnt be able to qualify for Europe even if they were in Scotish Premier League.

  • 68 Eve // Jan 13, 2008 at 0:25

ToonRich ..I don’t think Given trusts our back four full stop. Not at all. Ya can’t blame him either, They’re a joke. Our defense that is, except Taylor today. But other then that. I actually don’t think Given trusts the defense at all.

  • 69 Johann // Jan 13, 2008 at 0:44

Don´t exactly see what trust has to do with this. Does that make up for given to be disinterested in the results? What are you actually saying? You keep on saying he doesn´t trust his defense. What´s the point?

  • 70 AdamCF // Jan 13, 2008 at 3:26

I don’t totally blame the defence. 3 of the 4 weren’t that bad. The centre mids were woeful.

Cacapa was awful, Butt, woeful, Smith is a wombat (waste of money, brains and time).

Smith.. gave away a cheap free kick.. goal
Cacapa.. should’ve cleared.. goal no 2.
Maybe the rout may have been less severe, if it were for simple football.

  • 71 geordie_jordan // Jan 13, 2008 at 6:42

what a laughing stock we are. humiliating.

  • 72 ToonRich // Jan 13, 2008 at 10:31

In response to Johann, my point is because he doesnt trust the back four he (Given) wont play the ball short when sometimes thats the best option. He ends up punting the ball forward to Owen, who realistically wont win a header against the likes of Vidic or Rio…
