The Daily Mail is reporting that Newcastle United may offer Kevin Keegan the Newcastle manager position, after Harry Redknapp turned the job down yesterday.

Kevin Keegan - will Ashley approach him for Newcastle job?
It has been revealed by a Newcastle source close to the negotiations with Harry, that a major reason he turned the job down was his unwillingness to live in the Newcastle area. Ashley and Mort required that Harry live in Newcastle, despite news reports to the contrary.
The Daily Mail is now reporting Ashley is keen to bring Kevin Keegan back to Newcastle. Kevin himself has not ruled out a return to management as he said recently:
“I am 56 but you never say never in anything. If it doesn’t happen in the next two or three years I’ll be 60 and then it might be too late to return.”
We’re not entirely convinced Kevin really wants to come back to Newcastle. And the Daily Mail is suggesting the club may even try to partner Keegan with Alan Shearer as his assistant manager. This would apparently be a bid to erase the damage done to Mike Ashley’s reputation with Newcastle fans, these last few days.

Alan Shearer - will Ashley offer the job to Alan - and take a chance?
But we think this may all be pie in the sky in a bid to sell Sunday newspapers by the Mail. Bobby Robson has often said he cannot see Alan Shearer being number 2 to anybody at Newcastle United, and he could well be right.
Getting Keegan is one thing and getting Alan is a completely different proposition, and we don’t think the two can necessarily be tied together.
Keegan turns 57 next month, has been out of football since resigning as a not so successful Manchester City manager in March, 2005. At that time he seemed to be fed up with football, but a chance to come back and revive Newcastle United may appeal to him.
Alan Shearer we think will need to be offered the job of manager outright, and Newcastle would need to take a chance on him, just like they did with Kevin back in 1992.
After all, Beyern Munich, a much more successful club than Newcastle United, will shortly appoint Jurgen Klinsmann as their manager, and he has no previous club management experience.
So it could be either Kevin or Alan, but not both - and Alan would be the riskier proposition.
What do you think - please let us know - comments welcome.

alan hasnt even got his full coaching lisence, there is no way in hell he would be stubburn enough to not work alongside someone like kevin keegan at newcastle . this story could have written itself months ago , its been on the minds of everyone , our own lads back at the club sorting the mess out .

Keegan for toon!
Shearer has all his badges and can manage.

I dont want Keegan back - what point will it serve?
He was shite at Fulham, Man City and as England manager.
Yes, at Newcastle things were very, very good - but that doesn’t mean it’ll happen again.
We need someone new, young and able to drive us forward, someone who’ll not crack under the pressure and someone who will demand respect.
We have to think bigger than Keegan/Shearer etc.
We must install a world class manager.

I have to agree with Edd, world class manager is required and nothing less even if it takes us the rest of the season.
Things have to change for the better especially now that the rest of FS crap is gone from the club.

Van Gaal would transform club in a way that I, as a long-time fan, would appreciate - pace, to feet , and goals from several players - don’t think he would think much of Butt, Smith, Geremi as centre midfield but nor do I. If not VG then Keegan/Shearer as they would also look for something more imaginative in central midfield

Money is still a very good motivator IMO and if you check it seems we’re in 25 biggest clubs worldwide, we need someone to help get our act together. Thats why a “world class” manager would come. Houllier, Hitzfeld, Scolari, Lippi, I’m sure we can get one of them if we tried hard enough and maybe for even less than the 5m we offered Redknapp.

What more is there to say after todays 2nd half show at Man Utd? Why not give Thora Hird a shot at the job as I’m not sure who else would accept it.
All the top managers are now hitting the band waggon. Ferguson, Wenger, O’Neil, Rednapp, Bruce and more have all been dragged in to our freakshow. Depressed and humiliated begin to describe my own feelings.
My lifelong blinkered support of the Toon is beginning to feel a bit jaded and I’m not sure how much more I can stomach. I understand that it’s now a business first and sport 2nd. I know that Premiership football is the centre ring and I wouldn’t get to follow the Toon much if they were relegated as I’ve moved away and am wondering if my 3 sons and I should be thinking more about personal sport like Athletics.
The Geordie nation deserves more from their unstinting loyalty. It’s OUR team. The owner makes money from pimping it and the Manager gets paid to maintain our dignity. The players get cash to do what they love. Anyone fancy a mutiny? Could you imagine what could be achieved if the entire Toon Army turned it’s back on the money men and created a new club? Start from scratch and create something to have true pride in that speaks for the City?
“Oh God, I’m so depressed.”

Those that have read my thoughts on here over the last few days will know that I’ve been convinced that Mike and Chris have had a plan up their sleaves all along and that sacking Sam was done because they had their man in place.
I saw Mort sitting in the ground at Old Trafford today, glum-faced and that was before the first of Man Utd’s six goals flew past the hapless Given.
Now, I have to say, I’m not so sure about Mike and Chris at all.
I mean, Mike’s in Honk Kong - clearly sorting out other business, which suggests that he had nothing to do with Sam being sacked and wants nothing to with the appointment of a new man.
Wouldn’t it just be nice if Mike Ashley was in Newcastle and came out of his office at SJP and spoke to the fans and said, “I’ll deliver the best I can for you”?
Well, I guess that’s not his style as we know and all that’s left for Mort.
Another thing troubling me is this Redknapp deal.
Mort has admitted we appraoched him!?? Why would he do that??
Surely, whoever else we approach is going to think they weren’t first choice??
Who wants to be second choice?
I can’t help thinking that this isn’t actually a smoke screen and IS a whopping great big mistake.
But then, you never put all your eggs in one basket - SURELY Ashley and Mort simply asked a pool of around 5 managers who they could pick from?
Surely, Redknapp’s desire to stay at Pompey was considered?
I’d love to believe that they’ve asked around 5 managers and simply waited, or are still waiting for replies - when they get them all, they can then pick the one they want?
I dunno, I’m so fed up with all this, I just don’t know what to believe in…
Mort, Ashley - we need a pick-me-up more than ever before.

Manchester United are incompetent in the boardroom and even more so on the pitch. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first Manchester United hat-trick as the champions returned to the top of the Premier League with consummate ease.
It ended up at six but would have been 12 had it not been for Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given and four goalline clearances.

And to be really honest i agree with Bobby Robson ( lol ), this Shearer as a manager will always be there, going from mouth to mouth, whispering in the wind. If the manager we bring in is not absolute world class, and i mean Mourinho-class, then the Shearer shadow will always be lurking around him. I say let’s give the man he’s chance now, at least if he fails it will be out of the way and not impeding following managers work.

He has been said to be interested in the job before Sam got it.
He has primership experence.
The only negative would be he doesn’t really play the most attackin football.
Get him on a 2/3 yr deal and let him make us a solid team getting european football. Then attempt to bring in a “world class manager” to take us further.

35 KevinHann // Jan 12, 2008 at 23:46
Some of you are very ridiculous in their self-contradicting comments.
Shearer can’t be anyone’s number 2 - how do you know, you asked him personally? Or you can say by watching him play on the field with 10 others?
Let me remind you managers can also be a duo, not necessarily manager and assistant. Remember how Houllier started with Liverpool? Ring any bells?
Look to the future not the past - brilliant piece. More beautiful as literature than making any sense.
Who says Keegan will do good, no matter he did awesome at first - emm let’s see, how about Harry Redknapp at Pompy, he left the club after promoting them, they nearly got relegated and then got him back. Oh, a miracle, their fans didn’t say look to the future forget the past Harry is shite look what he did to S’ton, and where is Pompy now? Defo not in losing 0-6 to Man Utd. Besides, Keegan was no shit at Man City. They played the most entertaining football of the time, they beat Man Utd and they beat us too! When he resigned they were nowhere near relegation scrap. And after him they moved backwards.
Let’s presume the board does not turn to anyone outside England. Is there any better option than Keegan - Shearer partnership? Any that can happen, not I-DEMAND-MOURINHO-EVERYONE-ELSE-SUCKS rocket science fiction?
Oh, and world class managers have lots of cash and reputation. Why would they risk the second to get more of the first which they can easily have elsewhere, where people don’t sack their managers in 8 months?

How many of you went to St James’s Park when in bottom 3 of the old 2nd division??? under 10.000 and if you dont believe me check your stats. Where were you when you were s**t comes to mind. Man City dropped to the 3rd tier of english football and still had capacity crowds at home games and broke almost every away teams attendance record. Jim, Shearer is never going to go to a small club. Period. If he did that and it didn’t work out for whatever reason he would never get the chance at his beloved Toon. Your analogies are lame. Shearer has been a top player for nearly 20 years, captained club and country and is repsected the world over. Just like when Dalglish managed Liverpool or Klinsmann with Germany, Cruyff with Ajax.

from Daily mail:
Sir Bobby Robson:
Shearer factor won’t go away, so why not offer him the job?
Life is never dull at Newcastle. If I was shocked at the departure of Sam Allardyce, it was nothing compared to yesterday’s startling news that Harry Redknapp had decided to stay at Portsmouth.
I had assumed he was on his way. Owner Mike Ashley now has a simple but important decision to make. Does he turn to local legend Alan Shearer, even though he is untested, or choose a man with experience, a safer option, such as Mark Hughes,Gerard Houllier or Martin Jol?
Ninety-nine times out of 100, I would call for experience.Newcastle would normally be too big for a first-timer. But Shearer is different. He has the status and charisma of few other personalities in this country.
In the last few days Bayern Munich have chosen Jurgen Klinsmann, who has never been in charge of a club, to be their next manager simply because of his aura in the game. And if I was the Newcastle board this week, I would hand the keys to the manager’s office to Alan Shearer and tell him: “Get us back in the Champions League where we belong.”
I know Shearer hasn’t been a manager before. But he is a unique case because of his standing in the city and the force of his personality. It’s not his fault but whoever takes the job will have his ghost on their shoulder because of the strength of feeling towards him in the North-East.
Until he becomes manager, the Shearer factor won’t go away. So why not silence everybody now? He is available, lives in the town and is an iconic figure. He doesn’t have managerial experience but he does have plenty of big-match experience.
If he comes out and says he wants the job, Newcastle should give him a chance. They cannot afford to be turned down again by someone like Hughes.
Shearer is also what Newcastle need right now. I’ve seen the team play many times this season and they are lacking confidence and courage on the ball.
Shearer will provide that with his presence in the dressing room. The players will respond to him because of who he is and what he has done for the club.
And after the turmoil of recent seasons, Shearer will go back to basics. He believes football is essentially a simple game. I expect he’d consider a lot of Sam’s backroom staff as over-complicating things and, having spoken to Damien Duff last week, a few of the players would welcome getting back to the football.
I know most Geordie fans would like Kevin Keegan to come back so Alan could learn from him. But I don’t see Shearer as anyone’s No 2. If anybody came in, he would have to help Shearer rather than the other way round. Make Shearer boss or there is no point in having him.
As I said, I was stunned by Harry’s decision to stay put. I know contentment is important and Harry is happy walking his dogs on the south coast whenever he wants, but if there is a job worth disrupting your life for, it’s at Newcastle.
I hope he doesn’t regret his decision because the power of 52,000 Geordies roaring you on is immense. He has done a splendid job at Portsmouth but you can’t really compare it to being at Newcastle and I wonder if he’ll get another chance at a big club. I believe Sam Allardyce’s track record at Bolton was good enough to warrant giving him more time. But you can’t blame Mr Ashley for making his decision. He inherited Sam, and when you invest £250 million in a club, you deserve a manager of your choosing.
Besides the style of football which was alien to a lot of Newcastle fans, Sam’s big downfall was his buying record. No manager gets it right all the time but Sam signed nine players and only two — Abdoulaye Faye and Habib Beye — could be considered successes. That’s not a great percentage. Jose Mourinho told me last season that Geremi’s legs had effectively gone. “Mister, he plays like a 40-year-old. He can not run any more. He will not play for me in important matches again,” was Jose’s typically forthright response.
Naturally, I was alarmed to read that Newcastle wanted to sign Geremi. I passed on my information to someone at the club (this was before Mike Ashley took over) but Geremi still ended up signing. In fact, Sam made him captain.
Whoever comes in now must wheel and deal in this transfer window. You need 18-20 top players in your squad these days. Duff, Steven Taylor, James Milner, Charles N’Zogbia and two class goalkeepers — Shay Given and Steve Harper — are certainly good enough.
Michael Owen would join that group if he could get back to what he was. Beye, Emre and Nicky Butt are also adequate but they are not enough.
David Rozenhal and Jose Enrique cost £10m between them and there is also Claudio Cacapa but the best defender is still a home-grown boy Taylor. Alan Smith and Joey Barton don’t have the guile of Emre or steadiness of Butt. Up front,Oba Martins has good pace but not much footballing nous. Mark Viduka will look a maestro one day and make you want to tear your hair out the next.
Newcastle need new recruits. But, please, no more players Jose considers to have the legs of a 40-year-old.

Shearer’s the man…
I beg to differ, and there have been muted reassurances from the board to that effect, thank god. If they go back on those then I think we’re really in the brown stuff. Daglish was OK. Want to compare that to Rudd?
Keane is an fair comparison which I’m watching with interest. I just don’t want Shearer to cop a whack after 18 months. I hold him in too much regard. Perhaps a Championship but not a multi-million pound club. Our City as well as his and our pride at this stage in his career.
If there’s truly the groundswell to get him on the bench then it has to be as a trainee. Simple as that.
47 domtoon // Jan 13, 2008 at 0:01
Ed, Klinnsman managed Germany during the last World Cup - that’s far more experience than Shearer has to offer at this point in time. What he does have going for him is he’s a local lad who the players will actually listen to, he will fire things up at the club and turn this sorry mess around, but it will not be through experience as a manager but knowing the Toon inside out. I still think it’s a very risky prospect though and although it’d be a dream come true IF Al got the job, he’d have alot riding on his shoulders and would need someone with experience to help him - either as the main man with Shearer beneath or advising Shearer with Al as manager. Only problem then is that Shearer may undermine the other party..
Siiiiiiiiigh what a mess - let’s just stick together whatever happens, as we’ve always done

If we get a manager from another mid-table club by paying him a lot of money then firstly there’s no guarantee he’ll start doing well immediately and secondly there’s no guarantee he won’t leave us once he’s got a big offer as well.
We need someone that’s loyal and that will stay faithful for the long haul.

I cant believe the amount of flack flying around the like of Ashley and Mort. They have got rid of FFS and SA and we are whinging because they havent delivered ArryRedhat.
Give them a chance - they will get it right - after all 250 million of his own money is riding on it. Looking at the table the likes of Arry, Moyes and Hughes are not that far ahead of us. What we need is someone who will fire hte club in the way KK did - as a player and manager. I can remember the buzz around the ground when he played and managed and that is what we need again.
If it is the KK and AS show - so be it. As most Geordies I would prefer to be beaten 4-3 than 1-0 (and definetly not 6-0) so the sooner we get a TOP manager in place the better.
For what its worth my preferences would be :
Hitzfeld
Morinho
KK and AS

domtoon - Klinnsman has agreed to take over from KItzfeld at Bayern in the summer.
Ashley has come out and said that he never wanted Sam anyway, and that he wants to see us return to really attractive attacking football and will get a manager who can do that….I think we can safely say that Mark Hughes is therefore out of the running! This is good that Ashley has actually come out and said this as it has calmed me down a bit. The more and more I think about it, the more Keegan and Shearer sound good. Shearer hasnt got all of his badges yet, so he would have to be No 2 to someone anyway, until at least the summer when he should have them anyway.
Oh, and Ashley said he bought the club “to have some fun”……I hope he doesnt just lose interest and give up on us!
58 Greg B // Jan 13, 2008 at 0:12
Bravo - common sense may prevail.
OK its not everyones dream ticket but its a realistic option. I honestly cant see Mourinho, Hiddink, Hitzfeld etc taking the job.
Choices are Hughes (bookies favorite), Jol or Keegan.
Keegan would be reluctant as he could ruin his status with the fans if it all went wrong but if he is seen as stepping in to help us out, with Shearer he could be tempted.
I agree there are alot of negatives if this happened but at the end of the day we are not in that great a possition to pick and choose and I see Keegan as a bloody good option for the here and now, and lets face it, he couldnt do alot worse than what we have endured since Sir bobby was sacked - i am all for this one.

Shearer’s the man…
“Dalglish was just ok was he? He won the league 4 times and the FA cup twice as a manager including the double in his first season. Can we have a bit of that ‘ok’ managerial ability here please.”
We had it. He managed Newcastle and did OK, won nothing and got a shed load of cash. Then he became part of the circus.
We have to be rational. Decision making based on our guts, heart and disapointments have brought us to this unenviable position. Even Kevin Keegan secumbed to it. Remember the Manky saga?
OK. Take Shearer. Drop to the Championship. Fight back and build from there. I’d be happier to see that than to ‘dream on’ that a magnificent player automatically equals a magnificent manager.
63 Greg B // Jan 13, 2008 at 0:18
Also i would like to add, Keegan never really looked at home at either Fulham, City or even in the England job like he did up here at the Toon - he is the messiah, born again to raise the Toon from the dead!!!
64 Clouded // Jan 13, 2008 at 0:19

This is more like therapy than a rational debate. There’s not that many Toonsers in this neck of the woods.
So… Keegans name on the door with Shearer learning his trade in the side office, next to Bobby Robson, who should be there too. Let’s get the whole crew back together. Now that’s a prospect. Just gan cannie with Bobby.
All pie in the sky so lets go the whole hog. Limp through the rest of the season with the above and come out slugging next season. The last game of the season will be against the Manks for the title and we win 7-0. Keegan goes to shake Fergusons hand but instead puts his thumb on his nose and blows a raspberry. Shearer texts Keane to laugh at him as they are relegated from the Championship and Sir Bobby simply sits with a smile….
If Carsberg made football dreams…

Dalglish had a phenomenal managerial record when he came to the Toon. He finshed 2nd in his first season (albeit he was left a nice legacy by KK, and got us to the cup final in his first full season where we disappointingly finished 13th. He was sacked after 2 games (2 bloody games!!!) of his 2nd full season. We wonder why we have a reputation for not having any patience. If we can do that to a legend like Dalglish, what chance the mere mortals?

Shearer or Jol are a match in heaven for Toon.
Shearer never won a thing for Toon as a player and as an unproven manager is just the sort of chap we would choose. Don’t mention other players going into management.. most never won anything and those that made the jump to a top club like Klinsmann or Beckenbauer won a World Cup or league titles with their clubs.
Jol… a middle tier manager who plays attacking football but cannot defend for toffee..left Spurs second bottom… heard that story before ……….
82 Tez131 // Jan 13, 2008 at 0:40
Ok Shearer is a footballing legend and I will always have the greatest respect for him.
I agree Shearer would be good for the club and demand the best from the players, he would also probably be given more time by fans than most.
The one thing no-one knows is how good would he be Tactically?
How good would he be in the transfer market (Could probably attract players but would he pick the right ones)?
I am just not convinced, at a delicate time like this for NUFC, tha Shearer is the answer to our management problems.
ALTHO if we could convince him to put on the no.9 shirt and stand in the box for us I would be happy.

Steeley - I know - my point is in response to the article that Shearer is a parallel to Klinnsman taking on Bayern i.e. Klinnsman has more experience. That’s not to say Al couldn’t do it, just that I dont think you can’t totally compare the two in the way the article does, although of course, there is some element of parity. Imagine if Shearer had led England during the last world cup (and assuming he did okay).. then the whole situation of him taking NUFC now would be much more feasible
90 TOON TOON // Jan 13, 2008 at 1:09
I have always been against Alan Shearer being appointed Newcastle United manager, and was sick of hearing he was going to be the next Newcastle manager when he was still playing for the club however after reading Sir Bobby Robsons latest installment in the Daily Mail there is only one man for the job…. that man IS ALAN SHEARER!
I don’t understand why everyone is literally obsessed with him not having enough EXPERIENCE, did Richard Branston have any EXPERIENCE when he started Virgin Records…NO, did J.K. Rowling have any expirence of writting books before Harry bloody Potter… No (As trivial as it sounds)!
For me what is essential is having the correct characteristics or building blocks, innately installed within a persons personality for the job in hand. Alan Shearer possess these characteristics I have no doubt about that whatsoever. He was the captain of not only Newcastle United but England for Gods sake! A postion which requires:
Leadership
Motivation
Discipline
Man Managment
Ambition
Dedication
All skills you would also associate with a manager of a football team. The only skill I would say is ‘potentially’ missing is a tactician, and are you telling me Alan Shearer for Gods sake has no clue about different tactics of the game he has played or watched for pretty much his whole life, I’m not buying that!
And as for people now slagging off Mike Ashley you have got to be JOKING! The man has invested millons of his own hard earned money into this club and is trying to take the club back to the top!
Now lets get behind the lads, and give the new manager some bloody time!!
And on todays performance I thought we were a little rusty in the 1st half but we were putting passes 2gther and had a perfectly good goal chalked off! The F*** ing 2nd half wasnt so much that we collapsed except for maybe the second goal, we were just outclassed by the BEST team in Europe!

To bring in a top manager such as Mourinho or Lippi, the manager has to have some sort of good impression of the club to begin with. I personally feel the Newcastle faithful has not done the club any good. The fans want entertaining football, but in truth, winning games is more important. Just take a look at Liverpool when they won the Champions League, they didn’t play entertaining football, but they played very effective football and won europe’s biggest prize. Mourinho did the same too with Chelsea. So I certainly hope the fans will start thinking what they really reallly want.

Radomir Antic..the legend of Atletiko Madrid when he won the double in 1996 and saved Barca from a possible relegation 5 years ago.
All these Shearer talks are just useless cause if we choose him as our manager this January, then all i can say that the most exciting game for us next season’s gonna be against Leeds in the Championship league.

Some promising stuff in this article, stating that Gerard Houllier, Louis van Gaal and Ottmar Hitzfeld are all now in the frame. It also points out how unlikely any January arrivals will be, which makes me even more depressed. I’d rather M&A take their time and appoint a world class coach than rush into anything though.

Good to see Mike Ashley’s statement today - this is just what I for one want to hear:
Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has vowed to stamp his authority on his troubled club and run it the way he wants.
The billionaire, who has invested £250m so far, was speaking as he defended his decision to sack manager Sam Allardyce.
“I had to act, and I did what I should have done in the first place,” he told the News of the World.
“I must admit that when I bought this club, my instinct was to bring in my own team to run it straight away, including a new manager,” he said.
“That’s no reflection on Sam, that’s just the way I have always done things.
“But for once in my life I ignored my intuition and, looking back, that was a mistake.”
Now is the time to put away my Newcastle shirt - I have to be hands on
Mike Ashley
Newcastle had hoped to bring in Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp to replace Allardyce who left the club after only eight months in charge.
But Redknapp said on Saturday that he had rejected Newcastle’s “terrific” offer, and the club are still searching for a new manager.
Ashley, who is famed for wearing a replica Magpies shirt and sitting with the fans despite his vast wealth, says now is the time to take a more hands-on role at boardroom level.
“Now is the time to put away my Newcastle shirt,” he said.
“I’m not saying I will never go back on the terraces, but now I have to be in the boardroom - I have to be hands on.”
He said he is desperate to bring silverware to St James’ Park, but more importantly he wants to see exciting football at Newcastle.
He said: “I want a team that will go all out to try to give Chelsea a walloping, that will try to stuff Tottenham and that will be brave and bold enough to attack Manchester United.”

1) No Harry Redknapp - on any day I would rather get beat 6-0 by Manure than have HR getting rich at our expense
2) Alan Smith exposed as the temperemental spoiled brat that he is - with absolutely no chance of ever picking up the captains armband again.
These are both very very important steps towards our recovery. Dont be so disheartened everybody - sometimes something has to break so it can be fixed properly. Never have we had such a good opportunity to put things right once and for all, as we have now.
112 Bobby Ollox // Jan 13, 2008 at 9:31

What more do you want the man to do ?
He has bought the club, written off the debt, invested money into players, put in place a credible chairman, listened to the fans from the terraces and the coaches, sacked the manager who was taking us nowhere, and then goes into print to tell us what his vision for the club is.
and you slag him off with a cliched few words - its that sort of nonsense that undermines the quality of the support this club gets from its fans.

116 Dave Atkinson // Jan 13, 2008 at 9:58
Things could have been so different yesterday - had Owen’s goal been allowed; had Given not been a muppet and mis-kicked the ball against Enrigue; had Butt never been selected; had Smith been benched; had Owen been left out and kept in shape for a quick sale, etc etc.
If we’d lost 3-1 it would have been respectable but it looked a shambles in the second half. How anyone in the management team can think that a midfield packed with Manure rejects can compete with a team that never stands still, they want shafting.
Butt is past it at this level. Smith is ineffective in midfield. Enrique is more than good enough. Given should be sold and the back will be consequently freshened.
My vote for manager? Get Shearer in (with or without Keegan). Why? Because it will allow the fans (and the club) to put this bloody ‘legend’ where he belongs - in the history books. If he succeeds then fantastic but if not, then the club can at least have a fresh start.
117 James // Jan 13, 2008 at 10:30
Shearer is a very strong person and single minded. He wouldn’t be anyone’s number 2 except Keegan’s. People also seem to forget when he was injured under Roeder he helped out as a number 2 on the sidelines.
As we all know and Mike as well, we all want an experienced Manager that can stand up to Fergie and Wenger. Only 2 men can do that, Mourinho, and Hitzefield. But beyond them, we would rather have Shearer than Hughes, Redknapp, or Jol.
Shearer would grow into the role, and given an experienced man as his number 2, and a big transfer kitty, he would get it right eventually.
118 GraemeR // Jan 13, 2008 at 10:50
I see the Sunday Mirror is ‘reporting’ that Hughes is top of the list of managers - as well as slagging off toon supporters for ‘running’ the club like a celebrity show.
For me Hughes is no better than average - unlikely to impress the average geordie and his teams play to a set format with little flair. So if it is Hughes, we should of stuck with SA as it would of been cheaper.
As for the fans, we are not the first and definetly not the last to slag a manager and perhaps shape the thinking of those in charge. Perhasps it was easier as he was in the away end.
Notice that the paper fails to mention the scallys who want rid of benitez after any below par performance or the silence experienced at manure - no its open season on NUFC. Every manager has come to the party and backed SA and slated the club - possible because it was 6 easy points for them. Perhaps the london press fears another toon revolution and the fact they may have to report more from the north east in future instead of their southern pastures. Either way, we must move forward with a TOP manager - one thats won competitions and leagues - and not another promising contender. Cant see one in the UK (Wenger ??) and the receding transfer window makes it more difficult to fill the void. This leaves the likes of Jose or Ottmar as the likely canditates as both are available, winners of the calibre we need.

There has been very little interest in our players from other managers. I think we need to get some of the Allardyce, Roeder and Souness signings so the new manager can build his own team.
Im not mentioning names but we all have different opinions on who we feel is good enough for Newcastle and who we could do with getting of the wage bill.
122 domtoon // Jan 13, 2008 at 12:11
Spacey, you’re an idiot for saying something like that. Have you ever seen a quarter of a billion pounds? It’s a lot of money of one’s own to invest! NUFC represents just under one eighth of his business portfolio. 1.8 billion. Imagine if you invested around an eighth of your hard earned money into an ailing north east giant (albeit yes, as a business investment) only to see it for over half a year apparantly crumble with little indications of a return (defeats to Wigan, Derby - not entertaining defeats either, but horrendous displays of droll football - then home thrashings to liverpool and portsmouth!!? and I dont need to mention the purchase of a £5 mil walking, talking liability) led by a man who you didn’t appoint, but as he rightly says, he gave, against his better judgement, time to deliver at least a little something. No. You’d be quite p***ed off frankly . Ashley has done what Sheps wouldn’t have - he’s admitted what’s gone wrong, accepted what must be done, and is (at present, and god only hopes he delivers as well)going about it in the only way he knows how. Give him a break - he WILL sort this sorry mess out, but not with stupid comments like yours.
