Houllier, Hitzfeld and van Gaal In Frame for Newcastle Manager

January 13th, 2008 · 56 Comments

Newcastle fans were warned yesterday there will be no rush to appoint a successor to Sam Allardyce as manager, but we think Chris Mort and Mike Ashley are right now working feverishly to bring in a good manger as soon as they can.

chris-mort.gif

Chairman Chris Mort - casting the net across Europe

A source close to People Sport said today:

“Chairman Chris Mort and Mike Ashley have a good relationship with Alan Shearer,” “We are well aware of the qualities he could bring but they feel that an experienced manager with a proven track record is required.”

“The most important thing is getting the right man. There is no time-frame on the appointment. It is vital Newcastle United get it right this time and it will take as long as it takes.”

People Sport is also reporting that Ashley and Mort will cast their net across Europe to find the man to turn around the Tyneside crisis-hit club. They say Gerard Houllier, Ottmar Hitzfeld and Louis van Gaal are all now in the running to replace former manager Allardyce.

Newcastle have already admitted they have spoken to other managers about taking over at St James’ Park, with chairman Mort confirming yesterday:

“In the process of appointing a new manager we have identified and spoken to a number of potential candidates.”“We will take as long as required to bring in the right person.”

There are therefore not surprisingly conflicting stories on whether they may appoint Alan Shearer at this time. But we would be pleased if indeed they are casting their net across Europe. There are some good and available managers there – and let’s be honest, available British managers right now are just not as good as some of the foreign people available.

And they have also proved they can be very successful managing in the Premier League. When Chris says they have already spoken to other managers don’t be at all surprised if one of them is Jose Mourinho, since they need no permission form anybody to talk to the Portuguese native who was mentored by Bobby Robson - and therefore has become an excellent manager. :D

Ever thought of Jose with Bobby in the background, helping out, if his health permits?

Sorry, dreaming again.

Comments welcome - and please ensure you have registered your vote on the right for Newcastle manager - thanks.

Could be candidates, unlikely any of them will come. Must remain hopefull though!!

  • 2 Graeme // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:07

Ed, if you take Houllier out of the headline and add one Mr Mourhino, we have a very creditable list of candidates for the position.

All the Board have to do is convince them to take the job; convince them that they could become Legends on Tyneside, revered like nowhere else in football. No small task, but I hope they give it everything they have to pull off such an appointment.

Any of those would be brilliant appointments.

  • 3 Obafan // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:09

Again rumours; IT IS DRIVING ME MAD. We desperatly need a new manager before the Stoke game!!! I can follow Pearson who wants it solved ASAP. If I was him I also would not want to be in his shoes, knowing nothing ffs!!!!

I don’t want a repetition from last year’s replay against Birmingham on Wednesday!!!

  • 4 tommyy // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:11

I see on the poll Mourinho has dropped slightly, he was 51% earlier.

  • 5 iain // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:15

sounness just said on sky he would take the job again amd laid into shepard big time blaiming him for the problems.

he said he wanted to sign boa morte and anelka which would of cost no more than 20m he ended up with luque and owen for 27m and he was told luque would cost 2m !!! so why did we pay 10m ???

  • 6 tommyy // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:21

    Souness lol… whata joke man.

  • 7 Bill f // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:22

It’s really strange, but this dream I’m having seems so real that even theres comments by Ed in it about dreaming.

The worst bit about this dream is that we do’nt have a decent manager and that ManU thrashed us 6-0.

Thank god it’s only a dream and when I wake up reality will be completely different.

Lets see if I can switch it back to beautiful naked young hot women.

  • 8 james williams // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:22

Surely if newcastle want success they need to throw as much of mike ashleys money at getting mourinho and give him 100m to spend mikes got the money and once you ve done the intial spend the club will be where they want it.

  • 9 carl // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:26

i believe that these managers would come to the toon, forget rescent resultes and dramas, mike ashleys already said what his intentions are and i believe he could sell the club, his ambitions and targets to the new manager.whos to say that the likes of hitzfeld ,mourinho wouldnt want to take on a club whos chairman says:
“I want a team that will go all out to try to give Chelsea a walloping, that will try to stuff Tottenham and that will be brave and bold enough to attack Manchester United.
this says it all that hes going to back the new manager.

  • 10 tommyy // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:30

If he wants a team like that, its gonna cost him. A top class manager and a heavy transfer kitty.

A very interesting notion to ponder.

I like the bloke - some will say it’s a step too big, but perhaps, given the chance, he could do wonders?
    Just a thought………….

  • 12 valle // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:33

Well u can say what u want about Souness. but he sure as hell respected the fans big time… He wasnt treated that well and he still got tears to his eyes when all those fans turned of for the semi against Manure

  • 13 Tom_Toon // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:34

    Rooting for van Gaal.

    Not fond of Houllier.

Hitzfeld is going to manage Switzerland at the end of the season.

van Gaal was my favourite from the offset.

  • 14 MightyMilburn // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:35

I believe that the two most suited (and likely) candidates are Gerard Houllier and Van Gaal.

van Gaal - used to be one of the most succesfull coaches in modern football. He screwed up slightly with the Dutch national side, but so did Rijkard and he aint doing too bad with Barca is he (well.. in previous seasons)? His teams have always played attacking football which is what we are looking for.. 4-3-3 (ajax - formation - which means we would need to get rid off app. half the current first team players to accomodate this system..)

Right now he is kinda stuck at Alkmaar (no offence) and I am convinced he would love to get to club where he would be backed with some serious financial muscle.

Houllier - has proven that he can win things. He might not play the most exciting football, but he will not doubt deliver results.. so I guess that we will have to weigh up whether or not we can “live with” result football (perhabs not “as bad as” BSA-style)

Of those two I hope that van Gaal gets the chance as I believe he provides the best overall package (no pun intended..)

In dream land I would love for Hitzfeld to take charge, but I doubt that he will relocate to Newcastle to coach our side.. but boy if he did I am convinced he would take NUFC to the top of the table in a couple of seasons (not games - but seeeeasons)

Last but not least the “special one”.. No doubt he would also provide results, but I dont think he will come here..

Hughes, Redknapp - wont even comment on them as they shouldnt even be mentioned in the same breath as NUFC..

In the end though it is all about the club - even if we dont win the premiership I will always be cheering for the toon..

    HOWAY THE LADS!!!

  • 15 iain // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:36

out of those 3 van gaal seems to be the best bet.

let him tap into his knowledge of the dutch league. his teams certainly play attackin football.

dembele/steinson/donk he could bring from AZ

  • 16 Bill f // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:39

There are plenty of good managers who would take the job. The Toon are a blank canvas to the right artist. We have the fan base and the finance and given the worst case scenario, ie relegation, the right man could put us where we really should be a consistent top flight team.

I’m confident it will happen and soon. Or is it still me dreaning.

  • 17 rich // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:40

i think we need to aim high, Ottmar Hitzfeld or Jose Mourinho.

IF ashley wants the a flamboyant football he needs to realise he needs to push the boat.

dark days ahead for Newcastle if we employ a second rate man like Redknapp or Hughes.

  • 18 nightfall // Jan 13, 2008 at 13:57

of those 3 i’d prefer hitzfeld!

van gaal? no way..manager how can’t do shit even with top players he had with dutch national side and at barca…no thank you! plus he’s arrogant and would probably buy 10 dutch players!!

houllier? good for 1 season, to get us on track, but the thing with him is he doesn’t progerss in a long run… his teams play great at the beginning, but later on they’re getting worse and worse!! so no thank you!!

hitzfeld…sure..i think he’s one of the best and if he could bring ribery with him it would be..wow :) ribery’s the best…as good as chiristina ronaldo, but he’s a figter…works all over the pitch, but mourinho is still no.1!!!

forget about scolari and hiddink..they have EC this summer…

  • 19 Toonloony // Jan 13, 2008 at 14:23

I have said a million times it has to be Hitzfeld!! The man has won 16 honours with various clubs, can control big ego’s and is fluent in English, spanish and obviously German. Mr Ashley, go and get him now!!! (please). If not them Jose would be fun, he has a great F**K you attitude!

  • 20 scott9 // Jan 13, 2008 at 14:34

i say not houlier i will cry if he gets the job but van gaal or Ottmar Hitzfeld would be great.

  • 21 Jamie G // Jan 13, 2008 at 14:46

louis van gaal would be perfect. quickly though so we can sign some quality.

  • 23 scottish mag // Jan 13, 2008 at 14:57

why is no one talking about lippi

he would do wonders and be able to attract some top class players to newcastle

  • 24 Jon // Jan 13, 2008 at 15:09

Houllier did such a bad job at Liverpool. I don’t want him at Newcastle. I don’t trust van Gaal either.
Let’s get Mourinho, Lippi, Hiddink or Hitzfelt :)

  • 25 Halliday // Jan 13, 2008 at 15:13

I wouldn’t mind a foreign manager at Newcastle at all.

  • 26 b3v // Jan 13, 2008 at 15:39

we should all go on the official website on ‘your shout’ and tell them what we think lol, they really should have a forum on the official site then they would get an idea of that the fans want, not the media.

  • 27 scottish mag // Jan 13, 2008 at 15:43

i reckon we need to spend 100m to be a quality side capable of “give chelsea a walloping, stuff tottenham and attack man u”

    my suggestion playin a 4-3-2-1

    given

    rb miguel from valencia 6m
    cb barzagli from palermo 10m
    cb marquez from barca 9m
    lb enrique/zog

    rm quresma from porto 15m
    cm deco from barca 10m
lm nzogbia/matias fernandez from villareal for 8m
    am vaart from hsv 10m
    am diego from bremen 14m

    st villa from valencia 20m

    in total 104million/112million with matias

    but yes i am dreaming

  • 28 nightfall // Jan 13, 2008 at 15:46

    scottish mag - no way!!!!

  • 29 Frankieboy // Jan 13, 2008 at 16:06

Mourinho wold be everybodys dream but it aint going to happen.
Hitzfeld is a possibility but think he will be heading elsewhere.
Houllier has Premiershpi experience and done well at Lyon, for me he is the most likely, I think he would jump at the chance.
Did anyone see Souness slating Shepherd on Sky Sports before Makem match, not the way a club should be run.

  • 30 Ashamed_to_be_Toon // Jan 13, 2008 at 16:07

    Good man Scottish Mag.

Best laugh I’ve had all weekend.

Scumderland won today beating Porstmouth 2-0. Toon are now 6 points off relegation with Manure and Chelski at home, and Arse and Pool away still to come out of 16 games. That leaves 12 games to gain 14 points, even we should be able to do that.

I think Pearson is a bit of disgrace bleating about getting the situation sorted quickly. Grow some balls and do your job with the players man, you overpaid excuse merchant. Shameful behaviour. Hope you get sacked you no hoper and complete coward.

  • 31 nightfall // Jan 13, 2008 at 16:12

i think we should deffenitly play 4-2-3-1 (2 DMC, and 3 AMC) like mourinho did and french team at WC…it’s the safest..you got the defence covered and the team’s strong up front…at least until our club become stable. for that we’d need AT LEAST:

1 more CB: lucio (hitzfeld), carvalho(mourinho),…
    2 DMC: essien ( :) ), vieira, diaby, l.diarra, appiah,…
at least 1 AMC: ribery would be perfect (hitzfeld), deco or lampard (mourinho)…
    1 ST: drogba (mourinho),…

but it all depends on who’s our next manager…if it’s mourinho we could get any of those players (except for essien..i think), or if it’s hitzfeld..same thing…

so we’d need about 60 mio (+ money we get from selling smith, barton, owen, carr, shola, emre (i think he’ll be sold))

  • 32 chuck // Jan 13, 2008 at 16:50

Yeah, read Ashleys comment about his vision of a future United team, competing with the present top four playing an entertainin attacking style of football. There`s thousands of fans out there who`s dream would be exactly that, so at least we know we are all on the same page.
Question is how do we get there? Obviously our first need is a manager with vision (an Arsene Wenger ) That settled which way do we go ,buy a team or develope one from young first class talent or a combination of both?
Face it the present talent level is not great.
Nzogbia,Martins, Duff,Taylor,Given, and perhaps Milner are keepers, the rest not up to top four standards, as for sick note Owen and his big bucks salary sorry Mick you got to go.
Soh! these are the choices, spend BIG and achieve instant success a`la Chelski, or a gradual building over a number of years by adding a combination of star player plus stocking the club with young potential stars.
The blue print is there, Arsenal, with money in the bank, new sate of the art stadium,a young talented team who have yet to reach their potential. As apposed to Man U. who have spent like drunken sailors to feed Fergusons ego and who`s massive earnings forty two mill. have been used to service the clubs debts, I doubt the Glasers are happy having bought the club for financial gain period .
What to do! What to do!

  • 33 deano // Jan 13, 2008 at 17:09

    frey 6 m top keeper
    diego 15m class
    quresmer 10m like ronaldo
    fred 8m skillful
    van der vaart 10m class

    brazagli 10 m top cb
    miguel 8m

we also needa top striker 20+ goals
    villa 20m like torres
    adriano 10m like drogba

  • 38 Ben // Jan 13, 2008 at 18:00

Its so tiresome this manaer situation…it feels like it has been going on for ages…even though its only been a couple of days….we are in a bad situation…..look at bayern…they have their manager in place already to replace hitzfield when he leaves in the summer!we cant even get the guy we want even after we have sacked our manager!so annooyed…all of this talk of Hughes…i hope spo much that is not true…another manager at an average club doing average things….tactically inept……..keegan shearer would be a dream…in a dream world…it would either be amazing or extremely bad!….van gaul….not sure who he is managering (az alkmarr?) or houllier….not too sure again after reading peoples comments on his boring performances……so that realistcally leaves us with absoultely no one…lippi…would be good but too big a gamble…urgh PLEASE MR ASHLEY GIVE US SOME INSIGHT INTO A POSSIBLE 3 CANDIDATES!!wen need information!

  • 39 scott9 // Jan 13, 2008 at 18:17

Please, Huddink, Scolari, Mourinho, Hitzfeild, another guy who was tactically adroit was former valencia manager, Hector Cuper these are perhaps the only men, who can breed confidence, and aretactically adroit to turn around this side. This is the transfer window and it cannot be helped to think we are getting no new players in. We are looking for a manager. The new boss will have to come in asses his players and identify the areas in which we need strengthening.

We are in trouble. I saw Sunderland win today, Man we are worse off then they are currently.

    Prepare for a relegation fight.

    Kevin Keegan!

  • 46 Bob // Jan 13, 2008 at 22:51

Van Gaal gotta be. His head is bigger than murinhos, but theres a reason for it. Alkmaar play good football, has experience and seemed to like newcastle, especially martins, when we destroyed alkmaar 4-2.

  • 47 JK Muzzi // Jan 13, 2008 at 23:55

Hitzfeld would be absolutely great, but thats what I want to happen, but my head says we will end up with Hughes, I’d rather get someone else but that at least we will have a manager. I don’t understand why we would go for Hughes as he would want to be Man Utd manager if successful, so I would get a coach from abroad as there is no good British managers available, actually only one in the England being Sir Alex, but lets get someone who has won something to be proud of, not another league cup winning manager like Souness and definetly not a manager who has won nothing, we need a manager with a winning mentallity!

  • 48 matt w // Jan 14, 2008 at 2:14

we cant forget, MA wants to watch quick, attacking football, jose didnt play that, he is a defensive style, similar to SA but looked better when a team worth 300mil played it compared to a team worth 40mill played it, theres quite a money difference whihc definatly have an influence. however i do believ jose would love the passion and hype that would be around him at a club with the energy and pressure at newcastle and revel in it, however i dont believ he wants the job, but again, who could blame him!!

  • 49 ONLY FOUR 4 TOON // Jan 14, 2008 at 6:53

First of all I believe this was for sure the wrong time to sack BSA. Now we have little time to make use of the transfer window. Secondly I believe that Newcastle have to let the coming manager work in peace for a set amount of time, let say 5 years, and give him the possibility to present to the board the way of playing that he wants and sees. Newcastle have sadly become a club that sacks every manager before their time. How many managers do we have left to pick from until everyone has been at the club once. Is that the way to go when everybody else is striving for continuity and security. I believe not. Newcastle has sadly also begun to be a joke in the premier leauge. To do a Newcastle is to sack a manager. Thirdly, I believe that Mark Hughes is a great manager for being a brittish one. But as a Magpie supporter I also believe that the need of seeing beyond the geordie view, and the english horizon is a must in todays football. The reasons for this is that there already are a battle within Premier Leauge, where the game has changed by foregin managers. There is no use then to now, if Newcastle is going the way I am praying, to appoint a brittish manager, who might not have the global view that is nessesary to find the goldcoins that reside in the lower leauges in other european contries. I would love to see a manager that has the support of ashley, mort and everybody in the club leadership as well as among the supporters. We need a name that sends respect into the other clubs, a factor to count with, that Newcastle has finally left the kicking field and set down for a manager for decades to come. I would prefer to see Jose Mourinho in the manager seat at the club in the end of the week, other preferable choices would be Hitzfield or Louis van Gaal. Lets unmderstand that the Manager post is the most important place in any club, and let every pound count in the way of sucess in the club that we all love so much.

  • 52 Michael // Jan 14, 2008 at 12:05

True the managers post is the most important post. The manager brings the players and plays them to his strategy, so it is the manager.

The attributes of a good manager, are:
    - Good tactics
    - Good man management
    - Ability to bring the right players for his plans.
    - Ability to have pulling power.

We hear wes brown might have come to Newcastle, Sam Allerdyce did not have pulling power, that is why Wes said no, Even Diarra, said no.

    - A good manager wins games.

Which Clearly Sam did not do often enough. Since Robson left, This is the worst we have looked. So much for Big Sam.

He had money, but he brought Viduka, He sold dyer, a goal getting midfielder, Dyer was key to opening defenses for us. Do not say Dyer would be injured as he would not have played the game in which he got injured had he still resided with Newcastle.

He brought Geremi, Cacapa, Barton. Man! Who wants to work with those players? Who is worse Barton or Dyer?

  • 53 mark // Jan 14, 2008 at 13:49

    Louis van Gaal please!!!

  • 54 Alex Martin // Jan 15, 2008 at 2:41

We have to get Van Daal.

Tactically he is agressive. He has a scientific approach but a simplistic approach. He knows football.

Let him have a budget and let him re create the die hard team he has at AZ.

When will NUFC play champions league?

Not for a long time if we take Shearer.

God love him, but he needs to get his Coaching medals first. Don’t destroy your past by screwing the future!

  • 55 Pop // Jan 15, 2008 at 4:15

Bring Guss Hiddink in. He develop football in everywhere he go and win championship in every club he incharge

  • 56 Ron Grace // Jan 15, 2008 at 9:54

We’ll end up with a manager who’s is working in the UK. None of the others will come as the job is a bit of a poisoned chalice at the moment. I’d give a young manager a go, someone like Martinez at Swansea or Johnson at Bristol, both play a nice attacking style of football
