Ginola Supports Keegan’s Newcastle Return

January 14th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 116 Comments

Former Newcastle United left winger David Ginola says that unfinished business could encourage Kevin Keegan to return to Newcastle United.

David Ginola - supports Keegan return to Newcastle United

Frenchman Ginola, who played for the Tyneside club from 1995-97, supported Keegan when asked about a potential return for Kevin to the Magpies.

Ginola told BBC5 Live this afternoon:

“Why not?” “When I was there, we didn’t achieve what we expected at the time.”

That was the famous 1995-1996 season, when Newcastle had a 12-point lead at Christmas, in the Premier League, but Manchester United still won the title after Newcastle collapsed in too many games on the run-in.

Ginola, who is now 40, continued:

“Kevin Keegan was the main reason I signed for the club. He really brought something special in terms of spirit,”

“He really was the man for the job, especially at Newcastle.”

“I learned a lot about how to respect everybody at the club and I am sure this is why he was so loved and appreciated.”

Kevin is currently running his Soccer Circus in Glasgow and has been linked with a return to management at Newcastle. In fact, this afternoon he was installed as the new favorite in the betting at 6-4 by William Hill’s to take on the management job at Newcastle.

Owner Mike Ashley returns from conducting some business in the Pacific Rim tomorrow, so something new may come out tomorrow.

The sooner Newcastle get a good new manager in, the sooner we can start climbing that league table again, and the quicker the better – on both fronts.

Sunderland are getting a little too close to us right now. :(

Comments welcome.

ginola was a great player. wish we had the same team now!

  • 5 Lynxie // Jan 14, 2008 at 21:45

lets get one thing straight people. Sunderland(nil) are not, have not and never will be a threat to Newcastle United. they are the joke from up the road that lights up our Saturday night after another trouncing from some no-mark team from Division 1. They merely serve to remind us of where mediocrity lives and what it looks like. Fear not, keep the faith, and start believing all over again. No-one could do a worse job than Sounness and fat Sam. The future is bright. In fact it is going to be a hoot. Howway the lads!

  • 6 James // Jan 14, 2008 at 21:48

Despite my 40-1 wager on Keegan last week I don’t feel it is right to go back to the past. We need to look to the future - Quique Flores

  • 7 carl // Jan 14, 2008 at 21:48

i think if keegan does come he would be clue-d up on who to bring in at the moment .

Why do so many of you keep on harking back to the past? I hope Keegan does not come. Look at how he walked out of jobs when the going got rough !!! We need a manager who is currently up to speed with the modern game. It has changed a lot since K’s Newcastle days. Too much sentiment not enough feet on the ground.

  • 36 Adrian Swall // Jan 14, 2008 at 22:03

  • 38 Tom_Toon // Jan 14, 2008 at 22:04

Once a good manager, always a good manager.

It wont take long to get up to speed on the modern game. If he is appointed soon, then the rest of the season to get up to speed.

  • 39 James // Jan 14, 2008 at 22:06

Quique Flores for Newcastle. Best young manager available. Could be in place for Weds game if Ashley moved quick.

We should stop being romantic about the team and dreaming of yesteryear. We need to be clever. We need to get someone in who we can build a future with.

  • 40 Wynn the Leap // Jan 14, 2008 at 22:06

King kev said himself that he hasn’t seen a live match for ages,. I wonder if he would be behind the times, with regards to everyone else in the prem.
Although it could work the other way that being out of the game for so long, he will then come back with a renewed freshness that we so badly need.

    I don’t think so :(

That’s why I think he’s in the past. (although i wouldv prefered difrently)

stamford Toon. Keegan did not walk out on the club when the going was tough, as it certainly wasn’t tough on the playing field. It was the board demanding that we sell players like ferdinand that got his goat oh and the fatone and his side kick.

Keegan I don’t forget what you did or how good you did it. They say we had a bad defence, well I would have that kind of bad defence and finish second and third in the prem anytime

Hey, remember when Keegan bought us Asprilla as a treat?
Can you just imagine who he’d treat us with if he came back again and this time with more money to spend? Chikhaoui? and the rest!

  • 101 James // Jan 14, 2008 at 23:30

Quique Flores for the Toon. He will bring the flair of Real Madrid to Newcastle. Best/Most Talented Manager we can get right now.

We all know Mourinho, Lippi, Hitzfield, Van Gaal would be good managers. But never going to come.

Flores is 41 and already has an excellent track record from La Liga. Currently looking for a big challenge according to his rep . And yes folks he speaks fluent English.

Let’s build for the future with the best young coach in Europe, and not look to the past with Keegan.

  • 102 Tom_Toon // Jan 14, 2008 at 23:31

He looks like that from those videos, but hes more of an Ibrahimovic type, probably gets involved with the midfeld more though.

His mate at Sahel, Chermiti is looking a good player aswell.

  • 103 Warwick Hunt // Jan 14, 2008 at 23:35

It seems we didn’t sign that 3rd youngster Tamas Kadar after all, he has went back home after the BS sacking. It may come off later I suppose.
This brings me to a very valid point about Keegan, I remember him disbanding the reserve team because the FA had stated that a percentage of the reserve fixtures had to be played at the Home grounds. We can’t have that again, football has moved on and we need the Arsenal ethos of trawling the world and not just Geordie land for young talent.

  • 104 Warwick Hunt // Jan 14, 2008 at 23:49

    James.
You can get Flores at 249-1 at betfair.

  • 106 Tom_Toon // Jan 14, 2008 at 23:54

Edd, if your gonna watch the african nations cup, Chikhaoui will be playing, look for Chermiti and Nafkha (dunno if hes in the squad though), new wave of tunisian talent, who are looking very good at the moment.

  • 107 Shearer's the man // Jan 14, 2008 at 23:55

James, does this sound like the sort of guy Mike Ashley had in mind for his Chelsea walloping style of football?

“Quique Sanchez Flores has officially been sacked as boss of Valencia CF.

The manager, who took over in 2005, has been under pressure for months from fans and club officials alike.

Despite his side’s lofty position in La Liga, Sunday night’s 3-0 defeat at Sevilla proved too much for the club hierarchy to bear.

European football, too, must have played its part, the 2-0 defeat to Rosenborg midweek being perhaps Los Che’s worst continental result in recent years.”

“With the fans vociferously protesting against Quique’s style of play, and the narrow margins of victory that the team sometimes produced, club president Juan Soler clearly felt that it was time to act.”

  • 108 Shearer's the man // Jan 14, 2008 at 23:56

I mean, “fans vociferously protesting about his style of play”…. once again another coach who wouldn’t last 5 minutes up here…

  • 109 Ausgeordie // Jan 14, 2008 at 23:57

lynxie your the reason this club is shit. No respect for other teams and this blind belief that we are amazing. What about leeds? Bet they had a ton of arrogant wankers like you. Mate everyone and every team is a danger to us at the moment. Did you not see the derby games?? We gave up against man u the other night and that shows serious problems with the team and the players we have.

We gotta keep knocking back his incessant Flores chants anyway we can :-)
