The official Newcastle United site is reporting today that Shay Given will soon enter the top four of the Newcastle United all-time appearance list.
Shay Given - a great servant for Newcastle United Football Club
Shay is just one appearance behind former Irish left back Alf McMichael, who we remember watching in the 1950s. Ald unfortunately passed away in 2006. Dick Keith and McMichael were the two fullbacks in those days – as fans long in the tooth will remember with Ronnie Simpson behind them in goal. Remember Dick Keith’s sliding tackles?
The very popular Given now has 430 appearances for the club, since signing from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 1997. Kenny Dalglish, former manager at Blackburn signed him for £1.5M (what a buy!), and Shay is now just 66 appearances short of fellow goalkeeper Jimmy Lawrence’s Newcastle overall record of 496 total appearances. We think Shay has a good chance of going way over 600 appearances for the the club, if he can just keep fit.
In fact two appearances for Shay in our next two games would see him move into fourth place and level with Bill McCracken.
Here’s the top ten in overall appearances for the Newcastle United club:
Player Years Played Appearances 1 - Jimmy Lawrence 1904-22 496 2 - Frank Hudspeth 1910-29 472 3 - Frank Clark 1962-75 457 4 - Bill McCracken 1904-23 432 5 - Alf McMichael 1949-63 431 6 - Shay Given 1997-now 430 7 - David Craig 1962-78 412 8 - Bobby Mitchell 1949-61 408 9 - Alan Shearer 1996-2006 404 10 - Jackie Milburn 1946-57 397
Doubtless to say, we are very happy to have Shay Given at the club. As well as doing great things for the club Shay does a lot of charity work in the area, with his wife Jane.
Just an overall great lad to have at Newcastle United.
Comments welcome.

I just love Shay Given…
Really hope we can help him to a couple of medal before he retires though.

SOME ONE PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE ANSWER.
AS GEORDIES…..ARE WE REALLY THAT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FOLK FROM ENGLAND. (LIKE I KNOW THE REST ARE TWATS IN GENERAL).
BUT ARE WE THAT THICK AND UNREALISTIC ETC ETC……OR IS IT JUST THAT OTHERS DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE TYPE OF PEOPLE WE ARE????????
5 Punk Skunk // Jan 14, 2008 at 13:38
ChrisM, we win, we’re brilliant, we lose, we’re shite according to a lot of people, so does that answer ya’ question?..We seem to change our opinions of teams, managers, chairmen etc. like
people change their socks (everyday, btw)…
…Howay the Lads!..
6 indian toon // Jan 14, 2008 at 13:42
why dya sack a manager when you have no one as a backing manager. look at liverpool , they are already in talks with klinsmann before sacking benitez. this is mismanagement. but u never know mr ashley, he’s a shrewd man u know.
7 Punk Skunk // Jan 14, 2008 at 13:53
BTW, if Given keeps playing like he is, he won’t make 4th on the list, ‘cos, to be perfectly honest, since he took over from Harper, we’ve been pap!..Howay the Lads!..
8 Toon Al // Jan 14, 2008 at 14:09
given’s testimonial will be good, they should lob steve harper in the oppenents goal for it haha
9 ToonKing // Jan 14, 2008 at 14:12
who the hell voted Mark Hughes in that Chronicle poll ???? 15% ???!!!! twats.
10 Johann // Jan 14, 2008 at 14:23
Yepp Skunk. We were doing quite well with Harper in goal and frankly now all is terrible with Given in goal. Directly pointed to him? Maybe, maybe not.

Listened to SuperMac Saturday afternoon and he was asked what he’d do given the job (no I’m not putting him forward lol)
He said:
1st thing get Shay sorted, his confidence back and back to his best again (which I think he is doing anyway)
2nd Get Zog sorted being our best creative and young player at the club.
3rdly tell everyother player they are playing to keep their job @ Toon or play well and have a choice for a move to a club of their choice.
If they din’t McDonald would choose their new club for them!
Very blunt I know but he’s right, maybe I’d keep Taylor too as he seems to be progressing as CB.

JOHANN - What on earth are you talking about. It was shay that kept the sc oreline below 10 v 0 on saturday almost single handedly

Chris EM, the geordies are the most passionate fans around and everyone can see its true.I love being a newcastle supporter even though we aint challenging for the title,i have no mates who support newcastle.they follow man u and liverscum ,cuz when at school it was always one or the other.I only know a handful of people who support the toon and love when i get the meet up with them and talk about the most important team in the prem.
I am living in dublin and everytime i have gone ova to newcastle its been magic and what i wouldnt give to live there. So up the toon and i hope the next manager we get realise how blessed he is to sit out there in those crowds of the best fans in the land.
TOON ARMY, TOON ARMY!!!!!
14 ObaFan2 // Jan 14, 2008 at 14:47
IMO if the Toon had Shay while KK was here we’d have won the league.
15 Tez131 // Jan 14, 2008 at 14:49
I was really hoping for some news on a new manager today.
All the talk and buzz arround the issue doesn’t seems to be as much today.
Do you think we will have someone appointed before stoke game or even have the new manager in the stands to watch the game and in control against bolton?
16 indian toon // Jan 14, 2008 at 14:57
the suspense is killin me man
17 James // Jan 14, 2008 at 14:57
Tez - I couldn’t care less about the Stoke game. Even without a manager we have no excuse for losing. If we do win, then Arsenal will thump us in the next round. And we could do with not playing the next round, because we have Arsenal in the league (away) 2 days later.
Make the right choice for manager. Rushing it because we have Stoke is stupid
18 Punk Skunk // Jan 14, 2008 at 14:58
If it wasn’t for Taylor & Enrique on the line it woulda been 10…Shay handed them the killer 2nd goal!..Sorry, but i really feel the defense is worried by his positioning & kicks!..Hey, i think he’s a great goalkeeper, but he seems to have lost confidence or something this season!..But ,
the shit reffing definitely helped womanchester on their way (C U Next Tuesday)…
…Howay the Lads!..
19 ToonKing // Jan 14, 2008 at 15:04
Yeah Tez131 me too. at the rate things are going today (zero action) i don’t think we’ll have anyone in till the end of this week.
It’s really daft what is happening tbh.

Anyone think we should buy Dempsey from Fulham if they get relegated?
If a new manager comes in before the end, we need a new centre midfield.
22 James // Jan 14, 2008 at 16:17
No to Dempsey. We need international class players.
Ashley is not back until tomorrow so there will be no decision or serious talks on a manager until then. At the very earliest, we will have a man in place for the Bolton game. No chance of someone being there for Stoke. Pearson will be in charge of that and we will lose.
23 James // Jan 14, 2008 at 16:19
Is there anyone else on here who thinks we should play a few of the kids against Stoke? They will be more up for it and playing with no fear:
Tozer
Lua Lua
Carroll
Kadar

25 Tom_Toon // Jan 14, 2008 at 16:33
Does Dempsey not play for his national team
Hes a good utility player for attack and midfield, obviously he wont be in the starting 11.
26 Steeley // Jan 14, 2008 at 16:46
I reckon it will be the morning after the Stoke game when we hear anything, just so the papers cant put a sting in the story “manager loses first game in charge and crashes out of the cup” if we did lose.
Does anyone know where that clip of Keegan being coy today about the job was filmed?
27 Greg B // Jan 14, 2008 at 16:54
Kadar hasnt signed has he? I thought the deal had not actually gone through when Allardyce got sacked so his representitives put the deal on hold.
I could be wrong but thats my understanding of it.
28 Johann // Jan 14, 2008 at 17:00
Have you exactly seen the two first goals?? Well at least I have and you can´t go around it that Given should have saved both. Stop being objective and just admit he´s been bad this season. And ChrisM I frankly don´t care if we lose 10-0 or 6-0. I want my keeper to prevent us from getting any goals at all !!!

rednapp obviously we no
32 Steeley // Jan 14, 2008 at 17:47
scott9 - has Mort actually ben quoted as saying that he spoken to the people on the short-list? Because if he has then that’s made my day, as Blackburn have come out very recently and said there has been no conact between NUFC and Hughes! Woo hoo!
Can you confirm where you got that info from Scott9?
33 Steeley // Jan 14, 2008 at 17:49
P.S. I reckon Houllier wouldnt be too bad!
34 Sloop Jon B // Jan 14, 2008 at 17:54
Given may well finish top of the list- but not if he signs for Arsenal or Man.Utd!
Almunia’s form would probably prevent a transfer to the Emirates, but Fergie needs a proper replacement.
N’Zogbia linked to Gunners as well-Think it’s all a load of balls really.

IS there anyway we can block Johann from commenting. He ONLY EVER comes on to criticize Given or and Sinead who I haven’t seen around in a while, but anyway. It’s really beginning to drive me mad which has led me to this rant. usually I ignore him but he’s really beginning to get on my nerves.
Given’s a legend a really good keeper, he did suffer a major, I don’t know, confidence blow when he got badly hurt against West Ham, and who wouldn’t. Then he was dogged with an injury that was a result of the West Ham injury. He came back and then Sam (don’t know why, ignoring the so called sources reasons) started Harper for a few games. The only games we managed to play well in and when I say we I mean the entire team. From there on in it just got really bad. Nothing to do with Given. He played Shay in the Carling Cup, I think, and he played really well against Arsenal and he played a blinder for Ireland against Germany, I think. Fought his way back in, that and Harper’s shambles against Portsmouth or whoever we lost to by like 5 goals, can’t remember, but anyway. Temporary form thing, what is it, form is temporary class is permanent or something like that.
But between then and Liverpool/Chelsea he was good, but now he’s actually finding his old brilliant form. Ya the second goal wasn’t great, he could have dealt better with the kick, but honestly, he should never of had the ball back to him in the first place and he had to kick it with his weaker left foot. He made up for it anyway by keeping the score under double digits. He could do nothing about the other goals. Nearly all of which were deflections. That was his only flaw in the game.
Anyway he’s been pretty much our best player for the last ten years and deserves to get in the top 5. Great achievement. What a legend.
Oh and can we be sure that Johann and Punk shunk aren’t the same person. Just get over yourself, Given is twice the keeper Harper is, with all due respect to Harper, great lad, I don’t exactly know what your problem is with him. every post you make you criticize him. It’s really childish.
Thats’ better.
36 Eve // Jan 14, 2008 at 18:04
Apparently our new manager is Mickey Mouse, (thank you Sunderland) can’t wait.

Obafan2, you forget we had the geordie LEGEND that is Pav i goal back in the days of King Kev.
38 jimmer // Jan 14, 2008 at 18:40
given would last longer if there was a decent defence in front of him he works to hard
39 Eve // Jan 14, 2008 at 18:48
Ya they were only saying a day ago that he would age 9 years playing behind that defense. LOL!!
40 ObaFan2 // Jan 14, 2008 at 19:42
Ant very true but I think Shay’s still been the better keeper.
41 Punk Skunk // Jan 14, 2008 at 20:17
Eve, you’re obviously sinead!..Did ya’ actually watch the match?..i’m sorry to say shay was all over the place, believe me, it hurts to say that as i think the guy is a legend also…But, get the rose tinted specs off, he just ain’t doin’ it right now.
Taylor saved his ass twice in 10 seconds!..Bollox to ‘he shouldn’t have had to deal with kicking with his left foot’ he should be able to kick with either foot, that’s what he’s payed for!..He shouldn’t have kicked it at one of his own players…you’re quicker to stick the boot into our defense. He makes mistakes, tell it like it is, he let 6 in, that’s a shite game in my book, but obviously not yours, strange!..
…Howay the Lads!..
42 Dave Atkinson // Jan 14, 2008 at 20:19
Jimma - stop blaming the defence! Given’s kick killed the game on Saturday stone dead! Anyway, it’s rarely the defence’s fault - it’s those Red donkeys in midfield going AWAOL as usual!
43 Eve // Jan 14, 2008 at 20:28
Cleary, I’ve never seen you here before, and last time I checked Sinead hasn’t been on in ages. Well what I’ve seen anyway.
Now I don’t know why people (ie..Johann) think I’m Sinead, maybe it’s cause we’re both girls. I don’t know, getting really old by the way.
But I’ve never seen you on here and I’m on a lot. So the fact that you made that assumption makes me think even more that you are Johann.
Please, ya obviously he can kick with both feet but obviously, unless you Oba Martins one foot is going to be a lot stronger.
Taylor ya was in the right position, he cleared well, but that’s his job, he would have dived for it if Taylor wasn’t standing on the line to clear it..what he gets paid for. He made a load of really good saves in the match. Ya they scored 6. They should have scored 26. Now I did see the game and presuming by your talk Johann I presume you did so you would have seen that most of the goals, 4 of them I think were deflections. He made a mistake ya, but he also made really good saves and saved our asses.
So stop the act Johann it’s getting old.
44 Punk Skunk // Jan 14, 2008 at 20:36
How Dave Atkinson, don’t know if you’re agreeing with me, but i’m agreeing with you!..
…Let’s stop blaming the defense & the second goal did kill us, mostly psychologically ‘cos it was sooo pathetic!..we lost heart from that point,
especially since the ref had given them the 1st goal from a free kick that should never have been!..Howay the Lads!..
45 Punk Skunk // Jan 14, 2008 at 20:46
Well you sound like sinead!..& to be honest mate
i’m not so sad that i’d go making up new people
just to agree with, you sound ever so slightly paranoid there!..Lol…Saved our asses from what exactly???????????????????..We got beat 6-0!..
…Howay the Lads & Lasses!..
46 Eve // Jan 14, 2008 at 20:57
Sound like Sinead, how, the way I type, of course.
He saved us from what would have been a massive bigger embarrassment. Even you’ve to admit that.
You sound very paranoid as well, and if I’m not mistaken you were the one who accused me of being Sinead first.
But yet I’ve never seen you post at all, ever. I’ve never seen you on here before and like I said, what I’ve seen, though I could be wrong, Sinead hasn’t posted in a while so how can you possibly think I sound like her??
47 Punk Skunk // Jan 14, 2008 at 21:22
If ya’ gan back to comment 35, 2nd line, you’ll see that you brought sinead up!.. i just think it’s a shame you kind find it in ya’ heart to accept shay had a stinker in this game & this season he ain’t been up to his usual brilliant high standard!..To be honest, i couldn’t give a shite if you’ve seen me post here before or not!..
48 Eve // Jan 14, 2008 at 21:31
Em, ya and, that has nothing to do with you.
I’m sorry did you see the game, did you actually see the match or did you just watch the game highlights. Give up Johann.
