Keegan To Build Newcastle Coaching Staff

January 16th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 21 Comments

Kevin Keegan is now expected to bring in various coaches into his Newcastle United back-room staff, and possibly a specific coach to work on Newcastle’s long term defensive problems.

Chris Coleman - possibility could join Keegan’s staff at Newcastle

Of course Kevin didn’t care much about the defense in his first manager appointment at Newcastle but the game has changed and the defense has to be a lot stronger than during the 1990’s.

The coach being linked with Kevin as the defensive coach is Chris Coleman, who was recently managing Real Sociedad in the Spanish League. The former Fulham boss Coleman resigned from his post as Real Sociedad manager on Wednesday, leading to rumors that Chris could team up with his former manager Kevin Keegan.

The 37-year-old was signed by Keegan during his time in charge at Fulham and presumably his experience as a defender could be used by Newcastle to help fix their defensive problems.

It’s not surprising too that other former players are being linked with a return to Kevin’s coaching staff with Alan Shearer, Rob Lee and Peter Beardsley already mentioned. Also former Newcastle coach, John Carver, who worked closely at Newcastle under Bobby Robson, was fired by Luton Town along with their manager Kevin Blackwell, following last night’s 5-0 defeat at Anfield.

There may also be new roles for Terry McDermott and Arthur Cox, who worked closely with Keegan during his first spell in charge at Newcastle. Arthur Cox was of course a former manager at Newcastle United from September1980 until May of 1984.

Comments welcome.

Can you imagine the reaction if Shearer really was named in the staff as his number 2. There’s still a wee bit of shock still that Keegan’s back. In honestly I was a wee bit worried that we were going to be living in the glory days, but after tonight, well, I know it’s early but like, there’s only one way we can go up and I just have a really good feeling that it’s going to be up. I haven’t felt a buzz like this since Tyrone won the All Ireland, and I can’t remember the last time I felt like this when it came to Newcastle.

Its weird to read that a manager like Coleman would actually like to demote himself to join us as coach. Can’t see it happening.

How about getting Lippi as assistant manager, Mourinho as intepreter?

Ha ha what ever you want KK, we’re not worthy :D

Coleman would be a good addition but KK ain’t daft. MA has made me so so happy he ain’t daft, think of all the money he’ll make. (New shirt this b’day:))

I never thought this day would come, the media, the hype missed their target. The Messiah is back for better for worse but we’re gonna enjoy every minute.

The “bottler’s” back ha ha give me a break !!

HR to KK what a difference a few days make.

i honestly don’t know what to make of it, sorry to be all doom and gloom! if he’s learnt from his past mistakes, if he can attract the top players we need, if he keeps the infrastructure going and gets someone in to oversee the academy, i can see this being a few special years ahead of us.

i half trust on keegan..coz..now he seems like ok for me..of coz every manager will bring a win for the 1st team n 1st time in charge of a game..what if untill the middle of the season..will newcastle become back like last time..or will newcastle be in top 4 or 5?

  • 21 Elliott // Jan 17, 2008 at 10:47

Yeah we need some kind of director to source young players and someone to run the academy and coach them. Keegan always neglected that side. and he needs a good number 2. Actually think Coleman could be good, I like him or Adams as has been mentioned.
