BBC Sports is reporting today that Tottenham are closing in on a double transfer of Portuguese midfielder Tiago and Brazilian left-back Gilberto.

Tiago, former Chelsea player at Juventus this season
A deal for Tiago (full name - Tiago Cardoso Mendes), who is now 26 years old and was at Chelsea from 2004-2005 and is now at Juventus, is expected to be completed in the next couple of days. He has played only 4 times for the Italian club this season.
Tiago played for Lyon and Benfica previously, and has represented Portugal 37 times and scored one goal.
We bring him up because he could be a useful addition to the Newcastle squad, although we know of no move for him from the Newcastle club, but he does look available in the January window.
Tiago joined Chelsea in 2004 for £10M and then moved to Lyon for £6.8M the following year, where he stayed for two years before moving to Juventus in the summer.

Gilberto - Brazil and Hertha Berlin left back
The Brazilian 31 year-old left-back Gilberto, who is currently at Hertha Berlin, is also said to be a a target of the Tottenham club, although there were other rumors that Manchester United may be interested.
His contract at the German club runs out in June and he is keeping his options open as he told the Bild am Sonntag yesterday:
“I don’t want to say much about it,”. “I have received many offers. I might stay in Berlin, but then again I might go to England, Portugal or back to Brazil.”
Alex Ferguson was said to be willing to pay around £2M to get Gilberto in January, although he would be a free agent in the summer.
The experienced Brazilian has played 86 times and scored 13 goals for Hertha Berlin, and has played for Brazil 13 times scoring one goal, and represented his country in the 2006 World Cup. He is 6′0†tall.
We are on the lookout for another left back to fight it out with Jose Enrique, and maybe Gilberto could fit the bill, and we could potentially get him in January.
What do you think of these two players?
Let us know - comments always welcome.

Possibly journeymen types rather than players who’ll run their socks off for us. Plus we may be too late!

Ed this article will apply only to Midd the Yidd because they are both players who will go to spurs.
no point in this article i think, tiago type player is needed but it wont be him and gilberto isnt what we need. we need a right winger and a central midfielder or 2

Tiago didn’t make enough of an impact at Chelsea for my liking. Tiago sounds good, but Riise sounds much better!

i read today in the paper that Harry Redknap has made an enquiry into Shola Ameobi, whilst i would welcome the sale of Ameobi i think it would be the wrong time, i think Kev should wait until the summer until selling anyone, its not like we need the cash….do we?

a left back at 31 is basically on his last legs these days ed. its all about pace, he will be way to slow to do any good. the prem catches out the young fast ones let alone an old timer!!
so i think not alot of substance or point in this one at all i am affraid. besides, i would much rather have a right back as carr is shite. we always have cover for left back with the zog if we run short. we need a right winger and a right back. or better still, a middle/right man so he could be more versatile.

we have one LB trying to get used to the prem… why do we need two… Gan in a get Shorey or Bridge
FFS….

I prefer Shorey for our LB position than a 31 year old Brazilian whose best days are behind him. Get Shorey, and Bentley to send some good crosses in for Owen/Martins and Viduka, and place Milner in the center of midfield alongside N’Zogbia or a defensive midfielder in Butt. To our left we could have Duff sending in some more inviting crosses. This would be really simple and when Barton and Geremi’s back we have cover for our central midfield positions. Just go after those 2 players and we can reach the Uefa cup for sure! And if King Kev can top it off with Ameobi leaving for lets say Crouch or Asharvin then we have a strong squad indeed.

Another journeyman player who is past his prime? Sounds like a SA signing to me!
Tiago would be ok, however.

whos Ruben Amorim? jsut another unknown player u done reasearch on, on youtube? Tiago is obviously better if hes young and has played for these top clubs, tho i might be wrong this Ruben Amorim bloke might play for a good team and u might of caught me out there but im not so sure
16 JP from The Rock of Gibraltar // Jan 22, 2008 at 19:18
Bridge and Riise would be great buys also. I just want some good piece of business before it’s too late!!
17 Tom_Toon // Jan 22, 2008 at 19:28
e - im partly portuguese mate. I support portugal.
i doubt very much if amorim is on youtube, most of the players i name that people dont seen to know arent on youtube.

Tom_Toon.
Go and see KK and see if you can become a talent scout in Portugal. You seem to be able to mention plenty of players, I ain’t heard of. Just what we need young talent brought in for the future.
19 Tom_Toon // Jan 22, 2008 at 19:46
Haha, good idea, i recon most of us would do a far better job than any of our current scouts, they seem to be bollocks.
20 Phani Tikkala // Jan 22, 2008 at 19:54
Maybe that has changed with the new owner and chairman, apparently the 3 younguns we have got this January are very good prospects.
If nowt else we can sell them with a small profit.
21 scott9 // Jan 22, 2008 at 20:20
ive been talking about tiago for ages and how we should go in for him as he is exackly what we need cause he can play anywere in cm behind the back four and supporting the strikers and he is an exellent playmaker and has the much needed creativity we would need but i dont matter cause hes off to tottenham
22 Obafan // Jan 22, 2008 at 21:27
There are better players. So for me they don’t have to join the new NUFC.
23 Ryan Syahril // Jan 23, 2008 at 6:52
We need a playmaker like Riquelme or Deco - that is the least thing should happen before 31 January 2008!
24 toonbully // Jan 23, 2008 at 7:45
No real comment on above , but going to Arse match on Saturday at the Emirates and looking to meet toon lads before and after . Anybody know of any friendly drinkers near the new ground , or not so far away , where other toon boys maybe having a quaff ….TB…….
25 Lawman // Jan 24, 2008 at 1:26
If the likes of ManU reportedly offering £2m for Gilberto who’ll be free come the summer, I don’t think NUFC will have much luck.
I think we should go for Lee Naylor instead. An attacking left back, he should fit right into KK’s team and give enrique more than a run for his money.
Bought by Celtic just 2 seasons ago for £600k, he’s now valued at at least £3-4m. An exceptional player…. extremely dependable .
Played for England’s under21 and also experience in Celtic’s Champions League outings as he quickly established himself as Celtic’s 1st choice LB since he signed for them from Wolves in Aug 06.
Since Celtic are a club known to sell if price is right no matter how important the player is to them, we’ll definitely be able to sign him if we want to.
Great player!!!!
