Woodgate Confusion

January 26th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 53 Comments

After seemingly choosing Newcastle United over Tottenham, Kevin Keegan said today that he did not expect Jonathan Woodgate to come to Newcastle United after all, and he was very disappointed.

Jonathan Woodgate - Keegan says he’s not coming back to Tyne-side

We had expected Woodgate to be signing for Newcastle over the weekend, after reports today had said he had chosen Newcastle over Tottenham. But that looks as though it may not be the case, in fact the opposite may be true.

Kevin Keegan, the new Newcastle manager told Sky Sports after the 3-0 defeat today at eh Emirates:

“I’m almost certain he’s going to move somewhere else - it looks like we’ve lost him and I’m very disappointed.”

“You cast your bait on the end of the line. Sometimes you catch the fish and sometimes you don’t.”

“But it doesn’t look like he’s going to come.”

Newcastle had agreed a fee of about £8M for the 28-year-old, who used to play at St James’ Park – and it was understood talks were taking place today.

But if Jonathan doesn’t want to come, so be it - we only want players who want to come and play for the new Newcastle United under Keegan.

On the positive side, Brazilian Claudio Cacapa had his best display of the season today, and we also have Abdoulaye Faye, who can play well at center-back. And Woody would only have been fit for about half the games in a season - but the truth is, we still would have preferred him to come back to Newcastle.

Bur we’ll just have to push on - and maybe that means it’s an opportunity for somebody else to come in - but with only 5 days left now of the transfer window, we wonder if we’ll get anybody in. :(

Comments welcome.

Well I for one am not bothered. He’s just another sicknote and probably wanted loads of money for sitting on his arse!

  • 2 awc88 // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:43

woodgate is ten times the player cacapa is an everybit as good as taylor and the fact we cant convince him to come here shows we really are just not a big club anymore and that we wont get anyone in and that the top 4 plus spurs man city an everton are years ahead of us, that coupled with ashleys obvious reluctance to spend any real money mean we are gonna remaain in mid table for years to come just like we have been for th past 4 years

  • 3 Chris // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:45

We aren’t desperate for a defender in my opinion. I’d much rather see an attacking midfielder come in. We need goal scorers and our midfield don’t contribute enough.

  • 4 sparetheman // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:46

    I’m with Chris.

  • 5 ADAM // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:47

    J. WOODGATE WOULD BE A FANTASTIC SIGNING ASLONG AS HE STAYS FIT. i WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SEE WAYNE BRIDGE, JOHN ARNE RIISE AND ALAN HUTTON. i DO NOT WANT PASCAL CHIMBONDA BECAUSE ALL HE IS AFTER IS THE MONEY. WE NEED A CREATIVE MIDFILDER LIKE SCOTT BROWN FROM CELLTIC OR GEORDIE BOY MICHEAL CARRICK. WE NEED A WINGER IN SW PHILLIPHS AND DEAN ASHTON AS THE FORWARD.
    TOTAL COSTB = £50M.
    OUT
    CARR
    ROZENHAL
    ENRIQUE
    GERIMI
    AMEOBI
    BARTON
    A.FAYE
    TOTAL =£22

  • 6 keegan // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:47

i see ALAN OLIVER has dropped another bollock. when is he goin to stop talking shite

  • 7 keegan // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:49

    spot on adam

i would agree them players out other than faye although i would’nt have carrick and thers no way i would have chimbonda after what he said

  • 8 valle // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:50

awc88… 10 times the player Cacapa is and just as good as Taylor u say?, how do u figure that Taylor is better than Cacapa?… Ppl need to see Taylor as a player like the rest and forget that he is local, because stating that he is 10 times better than Cacapa is just deluded.

  • 9 Hadrian // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:51

woodgate isnt ten times the player cacapa is , lets face it your going by what you have seen this season from cacapa , a player still adjusting to the league .
your also forgeting how easily woodgate was brushed aside by viduka earlier this season .
cacapa has always shown signs of why he was captain of his team for years , he’s had slip up’s but even wenger doesnt play his foreign buys regularly for at least 6 month so they settle in .

things are not as bad as they seem , we just lack that inteligent footballer who can get the ball thru to owen , our dm is poor as hell also but seem’s to still be eating off the fact he runs around like a headless chicken all game .

  • 10 Gordon d // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:51

    GUTTED

  • 11 Nev // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:53

taylor isnt even local anyway hahaha
    hes from london!

  • 12 Steeley // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:53

keegan - I think a lot of people dropped a bollock on this one (me included!) - I genuinelly thought we had him in the bag!!

Still, it could be worse - we could get Chimbonda - not good seeing as he’s been quoted as saying a move to us was about nothing other than more cash!! Jeeez - will we ever learn!?!? First it was Luque and now potentially this guy!

I know Emre is available again in 2 matches time, but we really need an AM alternative! And some competition for Milner on the RW.

It feels strange to say that I think we’re actually well equipped in CD! We do need another LB in as I dont think Zog should be a back-up player there, and we def need to get somone in to replace Carr at RB. Striking options are fine too (Carroll, Viduka, Owen, Martins).

Fingers crossed for some of those gaps mentioned to be filled in the next 5 days!

  • 13 big dunc // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:54

i agree with awc88 we are just a small team confined to the bottom half for years to come

  • 14 Tom_Toon // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:55

    Priority:

    1. CDM
    2. CAM
    3. RW
    4. Utiility Defender
    = Big Striker

  • 15 Gordon // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:56

Ed - makes you look at bit of a plumb for writing the story:

    “Newcastle Signing Jonathan Woodgate”

Let that be a lesson Mr Impetuous ;)

  • 16 Dragoner // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:56

Cacapa has had maybe two or three bad games in total this season, yet people on here continue to blindly follow the media in slating him, let me explain something, the media only slate him because ever since titus went we dont have a defender everyone can laugh at, and the media do not like that one bit, they need us to be their comic relief section of the sport section. Also, im with Valle, how do you work out that Taylor is 10 times better than Cacapa? thats just crazy, mnore times than not Taylor is at fault for our goals conceded.

And Yes, Taylor is born in the same year and hospital as me, Greenwich, South London.

  • 17 Tom_Toon // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:57

Very glad we havent singed Woodgate:

    1. We dont need another CB.
    2. 8 mil, WDF!
    3. Injury Prone
    4. Drunkard and Junkie

  • 18 Obafan // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:58

valle - spot on. Taylor needs to learn much much more. Some of you here are mentionning him as our captain. Come on, that would be ridiculous. Cacapa was outtstanding today and is often the guilty one, because of an earlier mistake by Taylor. okay Cacapa also had bad games, but who doesn’t??? If he plays now most of you here point him, because of his3 weak games. He is not as bad as the most of you say. On the contrary he is a very good defender. We need a CDM to cover our 2 central defenders that is the main problem ATM!!!!

  • 19 Dragoner // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:59

basically all we NEED is two midfielders, one Dm and one AM/RW

  • 20 joe // Jan 26, 2008 at 19:59

I’m disappointed as Woody is a top player. Still, i’ll be more gutted when top midfielders and forwards knock us back. Adam, i’m not too sure how we will get 22 million for the players you want out. Half of them won’t get a bid.

  • 21 keegan // Jan 26, 2008 at 20:03

tom toon - do you know id woodgate was on a pay as you play deal last season.

he only missed a few games last season but this season he has missed lots of games. it is a bit dodgy

  • 22 scotty // Jan 26, 2008 at 20:04

tom-toon, i agree - we don’t need him we need a central midfield. We have lacked in this department since. . . . . i hate to say this. . . . Jenas!

I would be gutted if we signed sicknote. I lost total respect when he left the last time. We should give the reserves a chance to step up to the plate. Godsmark, Troisi, Donninger, Danquah…… the list goes on.

  • 23 Jim // Jan 26, 2008 at 20:09

It’s not over yet. I think there’s a bit of mind games being played.

To be honest, we would be better off with someone more reliable (a better fitness record). I would personally preffer Dunne, but I don’t think that’s a starter.

Woodgate is a good defender but I’ve a bad gut feeling about his fitness and off the field antics (going from RUMOURS only).

  • 24 big dunc // Jan 26, 2008 at 20:17

scotty wed be a laughing stock if he played those players and wud slaughtered in the press when it goes wrong, we need players in, and like i said the fact we cant get a player like woodgate i shows we are a small club who will have to go after players roberts, skoko etc

  • 25 Leo* // Jan 26, 2008 at 20:29

you cant be serious adam, enrique and faye out…. ?

  • 26 Chris // Jan 26, 2008 at 20:35

Agree Leo. Enrique had his best game today and looked promising, and Faye is solid.

  • 27 NUFCFAN // Jan 26, 2008 at 20:40

worrying times - big bank account and no players want to come

  • 28 ende // Jan 26, 2008 at 20:45

So be it. Micah Richards was my first choice anyway.

England U21 backfield works for me as Newcastle’s backfield.

  • 29 Jarralad // Jan 26, 2008 at 20:57

    Anyone heard owt about Woodie??

  • 30 ALBERT // Jan 26, 2008 at 21:13

Its a smack in the face on the back of a 3-0 defeat. The champagne has certainly gone flat from last week..No signings no shearer and now turned down by woodgate. I find it pathetic that we seem happy about a good first half performance today. Never felt so depressed !!!

  • 31 Bert Shaft // Jan 26, 2008 at 21:17

The lad has too much baggage as if you read any Boro message board you will find out what his own folk are saying about him.

As great a player as he was, we are getting a lucky escape. We had him and sold him for over £4 million profit and should not bother trying to bring him back IMO.
This should be the end of the Woodgate episode. Lets move on…..

  • 32 keegan // Jan 26, 2008 at 21:19

    albert i agree

we shouldnt be happy playing good in 1 half the players went in at 0-0 and they knew they were going to get beat just like what happened at old trafford.

  • 33 Gordon d // Jan 26, 2008 at 21:34

Does anyone actually know who Woodgate is signing for?

  • 34 al // Jan 26, 2008 at 21:41

how can we talk about signing big named players when our first attempt to buy a middlesborough reserve ends in rejection ! A pathetic club like boro with a half empty ground are attempting to buy class forwards like fred and alves for a fee of around 25 m They have a weakness in attack and are trying to resolve well done to them. We have a glaring weakness in MIDFIELD and appear to be doing nothing about it.Can anyone see where our next goal is coming from never mind our next point. We are a laughing stock and have only 5 days to proove not only to the country but to the fans that we mean business. Lay down a marker for next season !!!

  • 35 al // Jan 26, 2008 at 21:46

In answer to gordon d a much bigger club than us Accrington stanley

  • 36 Gordon d // Jan 26, 2008 at 21:49

oh well there are still a few days left .i will stand by keegan no matter what. we might get 1 or 2 signings yet.

  • 37 Tom_Toon // Jan 26, 2008 at 21:51

As long as its a CM i dont care!

  • 38 Gordon d // Jan 26, 2008 at 22:03

Is Riquelme under contract with anyone?

  • 39 Tom_Toon // Jan 26, 2008 at 22:14

Yes at Boca juniors and hes an inconsistent, mug with a bad attitude.

  • 40 Jarralad // Jan 26, 2008 at 22:16

the word is obviously…consolidate in this window…and recruit in summer…shame if Woodie is a non=-starter…best centre-half I’ve seen in a Black’nWhite shirt in my lifetime

  • 41 Dunc // Jan 26, 2008 at 22:18

Why do we want Chimbonda? what would he bring to the table? He has nothing special to offer.
    1) Let’s get a player who can come in and do a job similar to the one Elano has done at Man City. Someone who can pick a pass.
    and
    2) someone who can make the decent defenders we have into a harder to break down unit.
I think in Given, Beye, Taylor, Rozenhal ( needs to build up but I think is more intelligent and agile than Faye), and Enrique we could have a decent line. They just need to step up a notch. I’d use Faye as a CDM.

  • 42 Lee Donoan // Jan 26, 2008 at 22:32

I think all our expectations are crazy……

I think that us as fans should still think of us as a class club however we are just a little raggid.

This time next yea i am confident what we will be among the elite however we need to focus on football.
I am right in saying that since sam left our football has drastically improved.

We have Martins, Owen, Duff, Taylor, N Zog, Given….

This is a fantastic foundation for Kevin to improve.

We have been here before and it improved and hopefully under ashley this shouldnt happen again.

Manchester City have got lucky… Whitout Elano And Richards their nothing…. however they have been lucky.

Big sam got it all wrong from the word go. Long balls here and their. our team next season, give or take, may look something like this however im only going off the basics

    GIVEN
    Beye—-Taylor—-Wes Brown / Laursen—Bridge

    Bently–Barton—-Arshavin—-Duff

    Owen—–Martins/Pandev

    Subs-Milner-Vid-(The Rest Unknow)

This is what i would expect if possible. This is again building on the foundation that we have…. Two Years time (europe) Then bring the players on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

King Kev will do it……Have Faith

  • 43 Tripp // Jan 26, 2008 at 22:33

I’d like to see what Roz can do as a CDM. Put him in that role (with Butt as cover) for a run of games. Have him train in that role. When Faye comes back Taylor can go back to the bench. I didn’t see much of Faye in CDM, but from what people on here have described he was far better than Butt (better defender and pass as well). Roz made some excellent passes in the Bolton match and looks promising. More than likely he’s gonna be our best bet this season as we’re not signing players at a furious pace. If we get anyone it should be a CM, preferably an Elano/Fabregas type. That’s what we’re sorely lacking and that really what we need. The defense will be better if the midfield is more threatening and can maintain possession.

  • 44 Lee Donoan // Jan 26, 2008 at 22:39

Woodgate is a fantastic player WHEN FIT

If newcastle were to sign him knowing our look he would get injured first game and be out for two seasons

Honestly i would like Laursen, He is so powerful on set peices,

One youngtser in mind would be Curtis Davies

He is on loan at villa. he was a right handful when west brom were in the prem.

Lets face it we couldnt do any worse than Cacapa, Roz and Faye……

Get anyone Decent…. What about dawson.

Anyonne with Pace at the back would help

Taylor is quality, He need someone with Pace beside him.

  • 46 UTD111 // Jan 26, 2008 at 23:39

God!! the whingers are back already! FFS it will take time for Kev to change things round - and yes Mike Ashley is prepared to invest.
But stop expecting short-term miracles - this is real life. Now pick yer toys up and put them back in the pram.

  • 47 Phil P // Jan 27, 2008 at 0:01

    hear hear utd111 :P

  • 48 TYU // Jan 27, 2008 at 3:45

Taylor is our worst CB behind Faye and Cacapa. Anyone who thinks he is good is clearly deluded. Almost every match he stood out with atrocious tackling, senseless positioning and poor touches. prefer bramble tbh.

  • 49 robson // Jan 27, 2008 at 9:17

I was at the game yesterday in the Arsenal end. Lots of our players get slagged off for this and that and I agree our midfield did run out of puff yesterday but for me Michael Owen was by far the worst player on the pitch. Senderos was twice as quick as him and i thought Senderos was supposed to be slow. MO was awful in every aspect of the game. I was embarrased by his performance,,,,, and unbelievably slow and weak on the ball.
    Simon

  • 50 frankie // Jan 27, 2008 at 9:36

why ave people got a problem with Enrique??? i think hes been sound since getting back in the first team.

  • 51 tommyy // Jan 27, 2008 at 9:53

LOL i said yesterday that he wasn’t signed yet, and people around were getting excited and thought it was in the bag, i pointed out he wasn,t and got told he was as good as. Just goes to show how stupid some people can be.

  • 52 Phil,Gosforth // Jan 28, 2008 at 17:24

Friend showed me a pic of him with Mike Ashley @ Arsenal game.Said he asked about woodgate and Ashley told him that “he wanted £10k more than we were offering”,so told him no.
M8 of mine knows a personal friend of woodgate, says he told him he’s got a bit of a drink problem,”always home on the sauce”,he said.
So I’m not so fussed we missed out.
Buy a BIG name CB or 2 or 4 in summer.Spend more on the defence than the rest and I wouldn’t mind,as long as CM sorted.

  • 53 Ausgeordie // Jan 28, 2008 at 17:31

No wonder the team have no confidence. Half our supporters are a bunch of pussies and as soon as something goes wrong its boo this, you suck, were doomed, I’m going to be a steroetypical whinging pom….Your always going to support NUFC ( and so am I)….so why whinge the whole time. Take the good with the bad and give the team time to rebuild FFS.
