Press Negative about Newcastle - What’s New?

January 30th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 112 Comments

Kevin Keegan has come to Newcastle, is in charge for three games, has one draw and two defeats, and things seem to be as bad as ever.

Kevin Keegan - popular press  far too negative on new Keegan era

But that’s only if you read the popular press – and as usual, it’s just absolute rubbish.

The moves made by Newcastle Chairman Chris Mort in the last few days in appointing three experienced football men to come and work at Newcastle on recruitment and the youth system, are very good. It’s something you would expect from a club wanting to vastly improve their lot in the future.

All this negative news about Keegan not knowing or even being upset at the appointments, is just mischief being put out by the popular press, in an attempt to cause trouble in the ranks. Isn’t that how they see their jobs?

Keegan knew all about these appointments, and was in favor of them, before he ever accepted the manager job at Newcastle United, a couple of weeks back.

Dennis Wise, although admittedly a strange choice, is nevertheless a good football man, who’s done wonders for Leeds United this season. His appointment seems to suit him, since his wife is expecting another child, and he was growing tired of life in the press spotlight as a manager. Who can blame him?

Dennis will be Executive Director of Football and will work with Kevin and Chris on identifying and bringing new talent into the club. Dennis will assist the Board on football-related matters, including the development of the Club’s Youth Academy and player recruitment.

Tony Jimenez is joining as Vice President of Player Recruitment and Jeff Vetere, who joins from Real Madrid, has been given the position of Technical Coordinator.

All three will be helping Kevin and Chris get the job done at Newcastle. We think they will actually report directly to the Chairman, but will also be dotted line to Kevin – as they need to have frequent discussions with the boss about player recruitment and youth related issues.

You can bet they’ll be working hard in the next few months to bring in the talent Kevin has identified he wants at the club, for the summer transfer window. And don’t be at all surprised if we sign several more youngsters like the 3 excellent youngsters we signed in January - again for the future success of the club.

This is a perfectly sound structure from a management viewpoint that Chris Mort has put in place. It makes a lot of sense for what Chris is trying to accomplish, to identify and bring the very best football talent into the club.

We now have 3 senior football men who are charged with scouring the world to bring the best talent to Newcastle United -and we should see the fruits of their efforts in the summer – if not before.

Newcastle fans will now be ready to support the lads big time on Sunday against Middlesbrough. What’s obviously missing in all of this - is a few good wins under our belts, and once we can get them, things on Tyne-side will look a lot better. That’s a fact.

Let’s give Kevin our full support and give the players all the support they will need to bury Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Comments welcome.

Just get behind the lads on sunday

  • 2 Zx // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:08

I think its impt to keep your mind clear of all these negative press and stop agreeing with what has been written and start criticising your own club.

The press only write things that are newsworthy, and most of the time they are not the truth. They are only interested in selling papers and most news are just lazy reports deriving from rumours from overseas papers.

  • 3 Geordie Matriarch // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:11

This is just a bit of sports psychology, I suppose, but when I left the Emirates Stadium last Saturday evening there was the most magical rose - coloured sunset I have ever seen. I took it as a really good omen.
Now you might say Ee man, woman, divvent be si daft, but I think this is just as useful an attitude as all these doom and gloom wallahs. Howay, let’s just get on with it.

  • 4 Gordon // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:11

want to reference or link to all those negative stories you’re referring to Ed?!

Pretty hard to assess your counter points without knowing what was said!

  • 5 Cam_Toon // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:15

    Aye Ed…. 100% spot on.

The london press and every monkey with a key board is out to get the Toon.

I live ‘down south’… all i have faced this week is morons repoducing the crap they have read… ‘Wise next manager’, ‘Cookoo in the nest’ and all that crap. I only think its a sign that we are moving in the right driection. And the fools are scared.

Look at the teams who have progressed, and I mean to challenge the Top 4 as best they can.

Pompey, Villa, B’burn, abd Everton… look at the respective club structures.

With the Toon ran right for the first time in decades we are on the up… I will love it… Love it when the Toon make then all eat their words.

  • 6 Cam_Toon // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:16

    Gordon… look around fool.

    The Times
    The Mail
    The Mirror
Every two bit piece of S##t web site.

    Man get with it.

i hate the press but they hav got a point the day kevin keegan was made manager i was slaughtered on here for sugesting that keegans appointment was sum wot of a farce 12 days on im still siting here up high on the fence but come on this is starting to becum comical a mean wots with dennis wise i think mike ashley should sell the club to some 1 else and make good becouse i can see more doom and gloom comeing our (the ticket ,merchendise, and any other crap they come up with buyers) way !

  • 8 subz // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:21

Gordan.. generally the tabloids, Sorry I mean Toilets. I read the article in the Sun today, And they are pulling this stuff out of their own backsides!! I have not heard anyone on here being negative towards KK, but they seem to think we are stressed by losing to arsenal.
Pig Sam has almost destroyed the football at our club, and even KK cannot polish shit.

WE ARE NOT ON KK’s BACK SO FOOK OFF YOU VACUOUS WHORES!!!!!!

  • 9 Tom_Toon // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:21

Cam_Toon, down south in Cambridge by any chance?

If you want negative stories, visit this site every day http://www.newsnow.co.uk/newsfeed/?name=Newcastle+United

Funny how some of these so-called journalists thought Ashley was stupid to not give Allardyce enough time, but are now calling for Keegan’s head after 3 games!

  • 12 Ausgeordie // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:23

Everyone hates us!! So lets friggin enjoy it!!! Stuff being the entertianers lets f**k some shit up!

  • 13 nufctj // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:24

no need to read the negative stuff in the press, just look at some of the postings on here! It seems to me there are a few toon supporters who are believing all this rubbish.

  • 14 BristolMag // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:25

I also live “down South” and I can second what Cam_Toon says.

I have had nothing but abuse from every Southerner down here since Kev was appointed. They all seem to spout the same muck that you read in the London press about what a deluded bunch we are and how it will all end in (more) tears. There’s an air of smugness about it all that really gets to me…

Wish I was back up North amongst my own kind right now!

  • 15 Ed Harrison // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:25

Gordon - they are all over the place - just take a look.
    - Keegan being undermined
    - Keegan shock at appointment
    - Wise to be next manager - all that tripe

Couldn’t stand it any longer :D

  • 16 Sinead // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:25

    What’s new.

  • 17 Ed Harrison // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:27

All the club (and supporters) have to do - to undo all this negative stuff - is make the club very successful again.
That’s the challenge for all of us.

  • 18 big pea ov the weab // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:29

thats much easyer said than done though edd

  • 19 Tom_Toon // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:29

Also down south and im getting ripped from my mates, basically after every game, when he was appointed and whenever they hear about my club they think its negative and take the piss.

They are all gooners, spuds or manure supporters so what do they know!

  • 20 ronaldeano // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:32

Well said Ed, The papers talk a load of crap, and they always will. Gordon dont you read they shite they print?? The BASTARDS!

  • 21 ronaldeano // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:33

They fookin wind me up man!!!!!

  • 22 wayne // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:39

seems everyone would like to see us fall on our face maybe worrying that we might get it wright in the future?

  • 23 Eve // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:46

What we need to do is win a game, keep our heads down, get another result, keep the heads down, just work at it. All this talk proves nothing. The players want to show how good they can be. Players like Given want nothing more then to win a piece or two of silverware, and the fans wouldn’t mind that at all. It’s a wee bit hard at the moment, what isn’t needed though is people criticizing the players every game, if they have an average or worse game then they have a bad game, there’s no need for people to be screaming for them to be transfered and how they’re crap. It’s not needed. No one goes out to have a bad game intentionally. They need time, they all need time. Whining fans aren’t going to help. Keegan isn’t going to produce a miracle over night.

  • 24 Bosck // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:49

big pea - the clue that this is al rubbish is that keegan himself has come out and said he was asked about this when he took the job and one of the names suggested was wise who keegan agreed with. he then said that he knew that the press would put a negative spin on it even though he was in full suppport of the move.

  • 25 Tripp // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:50

fook ‘em lads. Don’t even read it. Waste of yer time and unnecessary elevation of blood pressure. If you let ‘em bug you then they’ve accomplished their goal. It’s all rubbish and not even worth anyone’s time.

  • 26 Chris F // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:50

Couldn’t agree more Ed, i’m sick to the back teeth of all the garbage being printed in the national media, supposedly on our behalf, saying we’re in a mess, that we want keegan out, etc.

    what a load of crap.

out of 3 games we’ve played arsenal twice away, one of the 2 best teams in the league, did they expect us to be beating them at the emirates, when they’ve not lost a game there yet?

    what a joke.

  • 27 Chicken // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:52

If you don’t like the papers then don’t read them. It’s pretty simple stuff like.

To say they’ve got it in for us is laughable.

Just for one second pretend you’re not blinkered by your love for the club, then think about everything that has happened at NUFC over the last 6 months. Now pretend your a journalist - what would your headline be.

Everything rosy in the Geordie garden?

    I don’t fookin think so.

  • 28 Southside Jordy // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:56

As KK said ” the reporter’s write it and the editors seem to retract all the really important things like……FACTS…!!!”

I blame people like that stupid aussie C**t with wanky looking hair and his SHIT PAPER THE NEWS OF THE WORLD!!!

  • 29 Southside Jordy // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:58

Chicken……..jog on!!! Yeah ok were doing very poorly but do they have to keep on with the badly drawn up story’s and far from the truth facts!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 30 Chicken // Jan 30, 2008 at 18:00

You jog on you southern fairy.

Like I said - if you don’t like them, then don’t read them. No point in crying on here about it.

  • 31 Bosck // Jan 30, 2008 at 18:02

chicken to be fair i’d say it was pretty rosy.

our owner has cleared out our entire debt.

we have started signing some of the best young talent around.

we are putting in systems at all levels to help with all areas of the club. ie wise, etc. dont forget at spurs transfers are now done by a 3 man panel who must all agree before someone is signed. the way ahead is to get these 3 scouting and liaising. then at the end of the year they can sit down with their list with keegan who can throw his ideas in and they can all work out the best options.

so we have lost to arsenal twice at the emirates whoopee doo, big deal, so would most other teams in the league. in a week or so we will have a back four of enrique, taylor, faye, beye that once they play as a four regularly will be one of the most solid in the league.

Keegan hasnt realistically been here long enough to make any significant changes, and the press rubbish about keegan not being pleased/not knowing is drivel given what he says in the below article

    http://www.nufc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10278~1228485,00.html

  • 32 ronaldeano // Jan 30, 2008 at 18:04

The media is in your face evry day “chicken dick” you cant avoid it and it winds real toon fans up you muppet

  • 33 Chicken // Jan 30, 2008 at 18:05

what did you expect him to say “wobbly eyes is a cnut - I can’t believe Mort and MA have gone behind my back and brought him in - I’m gonna chin all 3 of them next time I see them”.
    Haway man - wise up.

If you like quotes so much here’s some more…

When Keegan was asked about reports linking him with a return to Newcastle as director of football under then-manager Sam Allardyce, he said: “It’s absolutely impossible to give Sam a job at Newcastle and then go and fetch someone who is going to be some sort of threat, it doesn’t work.

“Sam would be a fool to let it happen and the guy who goes in would be a fool to accept it. “The chairman, who is not a fool, would be a fool to go and do it, too. It doesn’t work.”

I get abuse from everyone about supporting the Toon, i’m used to it now.

I just hope i see the day when we win the cup so people cant say ‘you havent won anything in 40 years etc..etc..’ doesnt matter to them about the actual history, it seems to some people that a club only has a history if they have been extremely succesfull at the highest level in football.

MY personal opinion at the moment is that everyone was surprised at Keegans appointment then everybody outside of Newcastle couldn’t really understand why we were s happy about Kevs appointment, then for us to recall the good days of 96′ the pres are now pointing the finger that we haven’t scored a goal or played well in 3 games under Kev.

But they don’t really say that we played an ultra defensive Bolton side, and the other two games where against Arsenal… arguably the best team in the prem.

and, and not to mention we are missing a handful of first team players who are of on a jolly in Africa.

don’t worry, as long as we beat the smogs & mackems….and west ham…..spurs….everton we should be good :)

  • 72 Tom_Toon // Jan 30, 2008 at 20:12

  • 73 ObaFan2 // Jan 30, 2008 at 20:13

It’s one thing the press being so negative but It’s bad that Toon fans fall for it and start believing the rubbish that they print.

Like MA isn’t backing KK with money? eh, where’s that come from, any proof? From what I see he’s getting people in he can trust to help him spend his money!
No transfers! Well so what, we’ve had 4 @ ACN, 1 in jail(kind of lol) and 3 suspended so half of KK’s possible 1st team have been absent and at the same time we’ve got some youngsters in who can hopefully play roles in some of the remaining games this season.

Keep the faith and don’t fall at the first hurdle, so we lost v Man U and Arsenal BIG DEAL.

  • 74 I Shy Ty // Jan 30, 2008 at 20:16

  • 75 Zx // Jan 30, 2008 at 20:21

ToonKing, Alves isn’t that great, don’t be fooled by the number of goals he scored. If he is THAT great, he would have been signed by Real, Barca or Man Utd already.

Fact that only AZ and Boro have been chasing for his signature says alot about his ability or rather, his lack of ability.

  • 76 ObaFan2 // Jan 30, 2008 at 20:24

come on the toon for sunday.god i hate the smoggies

  • 80 thelongshanks // Jan 30, 2008 at 20:46

iI wud love a huge signing tommorow, but if not kalouda and barnes would be good enuf for me.Both the players we need.cmon ma break open that padlocked wallet!

  • 81 ToonUSA // Jan 30, 2008 at 20:49

Positive to look for this weekend

    - Emer is back from suspention wich might see him and Zog in the middle treding passes for MO
    - ummmm well ummm thats all i got

  • 82 Knipzya Knypols // Jan 30, 2008 at 20:56

There ain’t gonna be any big signings this window, MA and CM have a more long term vision for our club. KK has more or less said he has this squad to work with until the summer, we have got 3 young-uns thus far and maybe another one or two for the future.
The truth is all our squad needs is confidence and KK can give them that.

  • 83 Tom_Toon // Jan 30, 2008 at 20:59

ToonKing - He wouldnt get a fookin game he is not very good at all, if i pretended why do all the players i name come out as i say when you actually watch them..hmm must be a lucky guess?

  • 84 Phani Tikkala // Jan 30, 2008 at 21:02

    @tom_toon.
What do you reckon on the two kids we have been linked with?
    Kalouda- in talks apparently?
Tomas Hanzel- had a 3 day trial?

  • 85 ToonKing // Jan 30, 2008 at 21:05

Tom_Toon, we’ll just have to disagree on Alves then.
As for the other players, i have no idea what you are talking about. The only player you ever mentioned that i have seen little off is your lover Chiktaoui and i hate to burst your bubble, he’s good yes, but not as good as you think he is. at least not in my view.

  • 86 ToonKing // Jan 30, 2008 at 21:10

Kalouda is a very promising player, good speed, passing and vision, bags of potential and also has a good eye for goal.

Hanzel i’ve seen little off, only a few times with the U17 and U19’s, but he’s a big strong center half and looks promising.

  • 87 Warwick Hunt // Jan 30, 2008 at 21:11

    @toonking,
I have to agree with tom-toon on this one like. I took the bairns to winter wonderland at Kielder and have to say I wasn’t at all impressed with the Elves. Although I have to say one of Mrs Claus’s helpers was a bit tasty.

  • 88 Black and White Blood // Jan 30, 2008 at 21:15

Hi guy’s has anyone got Alan Olivers email address - enough is enough. We all need to take action - Ed can you not provide some sort of poll of peoples opinons of the Evening Chronicle.

  • 89 Warwick Hunt // Jan 30, 2008 at 21:28

    @B&W Blood.
Don’t know his email addy but the best way to deal with the gutter press is not to buy it.
On saying that it does come in handy when I run out of Kleenex Quilted velvet. It’s not as soft but it does have the added benefit of the print dyeing the grey hairs on my arse.

  • 90 ToonKing // Jan 30, 2008 at 21:38

hey thanx Warwick Hunt, that’s a great thought to go to bed with………………………………..

  • 94 Tom_Toon // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:06

    Who Hanzel?

and i wasnt talking about Alves i was talking bout Slavkovski.

Kalouda is pretty good from what ive seen, but next Nedved, dunno bout that one!

I name a lot of players but Chikhaoui and Chermiti most because they are my favourites, Chermiti and Chikhaoui will be playing tomorrow if anyone is interested to see them in action.

You might see Chermiti try n kill someone on the pitch, his temper, omfg! He bit someone peck and made it bleed when the person was marking him for a corner.

  • 95 Warwick Hunt // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:06

    @Ghoti.
You might be able to get a claim in there like if you ever suffer from piles.

I youtubed Kalouda and he looks a good prospect.

  • 100 Dragoner // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:12

we wont get kalouda, he will choose juve, he is good but i dont mind if we miss out on him, Barnes we will get tomorrow as he apparently wants to come and jewell said he wil let him leave, alvaro will come also as he is desperate to get here lol. tomorrow we will get both of those for around 6million - 7million

  • 101 Smells like Ghoti // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:12

nah warwick u got it wrong i didn’t use piles i used one sheet. though i have distant memories of me finger going through denis berkamps head :-)

  • 102 ToonKing // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:13

great question scott9, he wasn’t in the first 11, which is odd and was only brought on in the 83′ when derby were looking for the late goal. even the Sky Sports running commentary noticed this.

“83 - Substitution: Jewell brings on Giles Barnes for Pearson. Could this be his last appearance in a Rams shirt with Newcastle rumoured to be set to move for the midfielder?”

i have a funny feeling he’s ours allready!!!

  • 103 Tom_Toon // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:16

Alvaro?!? Do we have no ambition?

At least get a YOUNG foreign CB if any!

  • 104 Warwick Hunt // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:18

    @Ghoti.
I see, so it was a spread sheet?

  • 105 JP from The Rock of Gibraltar // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:22

    Newcastle is on the up!!

OK so we’ve drawn 0-0 to a team that specializes in drawing matches.

We’ve lost twice to arguably one of the best teams of the world.

And we have not managed a single goal in those 3 matches, taking in the fact that Arsenal for many seasons now have been regarded as the best defence in the premiership.

Since when is that a disaster????

Since the first game King Kev was in charge I could see more spirit, drive and desire in our play that has been missing for ages.

These last two matches we have been passing the ball around much better and there are many positives to take from our recent play. Considering we are without key players in Beye, Faye, Viduka and Martins (Geremi also but we can live without him).

Things can only get better for us, especially when Chis Mort has been true to his word and is looking and building for the future. The signings of youngsters from every corner of the globe can only be beneficial in the long run. Also the somewhat surprising appointment of Dennis Wise as our Exec. Director of Football is a good thing. How many times have we been frustrated at the stupid decisions and appointments made by Fat Freddie Shepherd?? With Wise at the board he will input a much more footballing sense and can help Mr Mort and Mr Ashley with the football side of things at board level.

These are exciting times for Newcastle United only caught in a run of bad results. As soon as we start winning we will all be able to see the positives clearly. All this negative press is just depressing for us all, what we must do is raise our middle finger to the press and carry on giving our full support to King Kev’s Newcaslte :)

Come on guys don’t believe the papers, and if we don’t sign anyone by tomorrow it’s not a bad thing as we all tend to believe. Don’t get me wrong I would have loved some new faces to liven things up a bit but remember if we haven’t signed anyone it’s probably because they weren’t worth it. (Fat Fred would have fetched a player which we wouldn’t need and would cost us a fortune!…Luque anyone??)

ALL YOU GUYS KEEP THE FAITH AND REMEMBER.. The Future is bright, the future is black and white, fu*k the press we’re doing alright! :D

  • 106 Warwick Hunt // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:22

    Dragoner.
Brno will accept the highest bid for Kalouda.

  • 107 scott9 // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:22

i hope your feeling is right toon_king

  • 108 Smells like Ghoti // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:23

warwick, spread sheet? how can u wipe ur *rs* wi that that? leave a mess on the screen plus the static charge. never felt nothing from the writeup of arsenal v smoggies

  • 109 Warwick Hunt // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:27

    @Ghoti.
Yeah but the negative charge dislodges the klingons.

  • 110 Smells like Ghoti // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:33
