The strange move of Ãlvaro from Levante to Newcastle United has been held up as they have failed to agree on a compensation package.

Levante’s Alvaro marking Fernando Torres
According to Levante, they have not sanctioned the move because they could not agree on how much they would have to pay Alvaro because he had not asked for a transfer.
The Brazilian defender is annoyed at his club Levante for not allowing him to move to Newcastle in what he describes as a dream move.
Having apparently already spoken to Newcastle, Ãlvaro was due in England to undergo a medical and sign for the club. At least those were the surprise reports we were seeing today and it looks like the last minute difficulties have upset the player.
Alvaro said today:
“I am very hurt. Only the club will know the reasons why they have done this,” “My head is no longer with Levante.â€
“I am hurt because I have had the offer to leave since January 21 and I do not understand why they have done this.”
Ãlvaro then said that he believes that things can be sorted out and there is enough time to push the deal through before the transfer window closes.
“I hope that this can be resolved, because if not then there will be big problems,”
We’ll have to see about that - but it’s always looked an odd deal for Newcastle to make, and the club have yet to comment on the transfer. All very strange indeed.
Comments welcome.

it smacks of the joey barton ordeal where we ended up paying his loyalty bonus’s…. i now have no doubt that we will sign him, unfortunatly i dont think he is good enough, but we will just have to wait and see… have faith
3 John // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:10
I could’nt really care if we get him or not..it seems so badthat were showing a lack off ambition in the transfer market..
Barnes could off been signed im sure , but we made a pathetic offer. Then just seen Kevoin prince Boetang is on he’s way to Villa ..Why did’nt we stick in a bid for him..
He got voted german player of the year last year..must be good..
What about this Cech guy we were linked with yesterday..No news on him either

5 obafemimartins // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:14
why have we had to wait until the second last day of the window to start doin anything? surely keegan would want players in quick so he doesnt have to worry. maybe jemenez etc have mentioned them is all i caan think of
6 Nev // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:14
john - agreed
boateng would of been a fantastic signing !
didnt even know he was available tbh
7 scott9 // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:14
we should just go in for barnes
8 Stami // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:16
we have had a weakened squad for the past few weeks! we have played the top 2 teams in England with in the space of a month. where we really expected to pull a number on either of these teams? without a manager for Man U and 4 of our best players away for Arsenal! not likely!
IMO the reality is that we now have alot to look forward to! the future is only goin to bring good things to our club. we have a board making changes within the construct of the club for the future. we have a Manager who is loved by the fans, respected by the players and the backing of the board. how can this appear to be a bad thing?
i think our current squad is very very good! we lack confidence, and leadership on the field! bringing in new players should not be a priority right now. with the appointment of our new senior management, KK will now be able to focus on getting our squad to gel and start fighting for results!
the future looks VERY bright for NUFC!

is it me or ashley doesnt wanna spend any real cash every player just about was available in this jan transfer window , for a price and btw were shit the managment are shite, the board are clueless spending 2.5 mill compensation on wise when if we put that with the money we offered for barner we wud have got him,
In Short the club is a joke
10 Nev // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:18
anything under £8mil for Barnes is good value
hes just as good as Luke Young who went to Villa for £12mil !!
seems like a very similar situation tho .. Derby going down exact same as Watford lol
11 keegan // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:19

john completely agree unbleievable just checked it out boeteng would have been a good signing however we probably never new he was available as villa probably did it on the quit why the hell are they selling him he only went in the summer nad is only 20 he hasnt played that bad
13 Chicken // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:22
This story is utter bollox. Where is it coming from? Setanta aren’t journalists - they’re an Irish broadcaster.
None of the papers or even Sky Sports News are covering this.
F***ing Irish media, always stirring things up for the toon!
14 kelvin // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:31
can anyone explain to me why we need this guy? we have too many CBs as it is, what we need is midfield players, not defenders (except maybe a left back)
15 nufctj // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:31
big dunc, I don’t want to see you back on here in a year when things are looking up, unless you say you are sorry, and admit you were wrong!

18 John // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:35
I know could’nt beleive it either …We just did’nt ask i soppose ..Or in other words ..showed a lack off ambition.
sorry, in a mood a bit..Hoped we would off got 1 in at least but thats does’nt seem to be happening now for some reason..Just a pain when you see Totenham , Villa and other teams spend and we seem to be falling behind…
Soppose stay in the prem this year and see what happans next season again..Once again, another season wasted
19 broon ale // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:37
right,, i said this on the other thread but i need as many people as i can to read it as it certaintly applys to a fair few of you;; more or less everyone on this blog is a fairweather fan who has no patience, common sense or understanding. You are part of the reasons why things dont always work. You are not prepared to let things materialise over time.. it all has to happen yesterday. Keegan got the job 2 weeks into the transfer window and you expect him to come in wave a magic wand, sign deco, and all these players you have probably never seen play, tissonne, kalouda etc etc.. reality check needed. he is best sticking with what he has got and spending the real money in the summer. you can forget about this season! there’s nowt to play for. there is worse teams than us and we will not go down. forget about signing players, would you be happy if we signed another Boumsong, or babayaro! ??? be patient, support your team, be realistic, show some understanding, look at the big picture, be more conisdered in the things you type and realise the people running our club know what they are doing! january is not the time to ressurect this club considering all that has went on!
20 nufctj // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:38
villa is in contention for a CL spot, we are not, and Tottenham is in the UEFA cup next year, so really can’t look at them and compare them to us, as much as it hurts to say that.
21 cooldj // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:38
NEV or ashley young even 9.5million!
22 Neil // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:39
Nev I hope you mean Ashley Young as Luke is the sh!te defender that plays for the smoggies!!!!!
It’s funny how us fans seem to be at total extremes on what we think of the club - you’re either totally happy with the way things are going or totally peed off with it all.
Unlike lots of people on this site who comment I think I have an open mind and we simply can’t judge Keegan or the management on this season - It’s YET ANOTHER season to be written off - just like the last however many.
Keep the faith!
23 nufctj // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:40
broon ale, I am with you brother! and a pint of broon ale sounds very good right about now! cheers!
24 John // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:42
broone ale your right ..Just want success now..Im sick off waiting
i want an attacking midfielder and i’ll shut up then..
In fairness Totenham are doing crap this year aswell ( except final) .. it just shit when I know were bigger than both these clubs when you look at the bigger picture..
25 Toon Al // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:44
if you ask me lads, we’ve shown too much ambition in the transfere market, to us our team looks the best in the world, but to others it looks on a downer, bently, defoe, swp, bridge we were apparently targeting. i think that shows too much ambition takin players already in this league.
you not agree?
26 nufctj // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:45
I agree Toon Al, that’s why we have to look long term, sign up and coming players, and develop our own.
27 Punk Skunk // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:49
broon ale mate, you are soooooooooooo RIGHT!..
28 Tom_Toon // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:49
Just buy foreign players who we know would adapt to the prem, it isnt hard! and they dont have to be top quality to adapt anyway!
29 Toon Al // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:50
we should be in for barnes at three mil, we would at least be able to reoup that if he was a bit of a flop
30 Mick G // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:50
With relegation being a real threat ,at least there is still something to play for this season
31 cooldj // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:53
every team that does well has world class players from the youth:
barcelona-messi. dos santos. bojan
liverpool. carragher and gerrard
even chelsea have terry.
man u in the 1990s had lots.
buying established players should only compliment and enhance what you already have!
32 chuck // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:56
Most fans have not realized the importance of aquiring Jimenez andVetere.
The club will survive the drop this year with the available talent.
Get used to the Idea KK is a stopgap untill a First class manager can be signed.
The changes being introduced by the new owner are being finalized, the key elements being Vetere and Jimenez, who will streamline both management and scouting systems, stocking the youth teams with the best available talent to rival the present Arsenal system,a move that bodes well for the future of the Magpies.
With the problems of heavy debt at both Man. U. and liverpool in comparison Newcastles future appears bright.
33 cooldj // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:58
buying established players should compliment the youth. youngsters are required to win trophies.
look at man u in the 1990s
chelsea built their team around terry and liverpool are built around gerrard and carragher.
barcelona have bojan, dos santos and messi while Arsenal look like they could be very very good in years to come. a good youth system is needed first and foremost and then established players can ENHANCE WHAT WE ALREADY HAVE but we need some youngsters coming through first. that is how to win trophies (all the better if the youngster is a geordie through and through)!!
34 Toon Al // Jan 30, 2008 at 15:59
hope so like chuck
35 Punk Skunk // Jan 30, 2008 at 16:01
Good shout Chuck!..Think you’ve got something there!..
36 Chicken // Jan 30, 2008 at 16:09
I’ll support the team to the hilt - always have , always will. But on this blog I write what I feeling at the time. Why should we have to water it down? In case some of out molly-coddled players with their fragile ego’s are reading? Bollox to that. For me things are pish poor at the toon and to think we have to write off yet another season does my head in. You say look at the big picture. OK then - why didn’t MA wait until the summer to get rid of BSA? We aren’t anywhere near being better off with KK now. The squad is the same , the performances are no better, the results are worse. And it really fookin boils my blood to think that boro and possibly even sunderland are going to finish above us AGAIN!!!
37 Chicken // Jan 30, 2008 at 16:12
There you go, put that in pipe and smoke it.
38 Tom_Toon // Jan 30, 2008 at 16:23
Chicken my thoughts exactly except for the fact tha Fat Sam should have been sacked before january not in the sumer and certainly not in the middle of a transfer window when we need players!
39 sirjasontoon // Jan 30, 2008 at 16:29
I am well frustrated with the lack of transfer action..in a whole month not landing any significant buys is shocking.
When you think the money this board has I get the feeling the toon is simply a toy and a cash cow for Ashley.
I mean offering 1.5 million for giles barns..what a waste of a phone call…Idiots.
40 Chris // Jan 30, 2008 at 16:32
The thing is though Chicken, Keegan has the second part of the season to make up a list of players that will benefit the team. If he came in the summer we’d be in the same situation then that we are now.
So stick that in your pipe and smoke it. LOL
41 Chicken // Jan 30, 2008 at 16:37
Chris - Keegan has until the summer to make up a list of players? Don’t you mean wobbly eyes, Jimenez and Julio Geordio (or whatever his name is)?
Doesn’t sound like KK has much say in signing players, and even if he did, who would he go for? The bloke hasn’t even watched a footy game for 2 years.
Anyone know if Ginola can still kick a ball?
42 nufctj // Jan 30, 2008 at 16:40
MA has said that not sacking BSA in the summer was a mistake. He is already on record saying as such.
43 valle // Jan 30, 2008 at 16:46
I dont want him… That being said, the player i was the most disapointed getting last summer was Faye and he has proved my feelings wrong loads of times and today i see him as one of our best buys along with Feye.
44 Benn..Geordie Down South // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:04

I Think this goal drought just shows how much we miss martins lolz..
Hat-trick for him in his first match back?!
45 Cyprus Mag // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:13
Chuck, I can see why we should be optimistic when we compare ourselves to Man U…..I think, but tell me again in case I’ve got it wrong.
46 Sinead // Jan 30, 2008 at 17:23
Chicken..
Ya I hate Setanta, RTE is so much better but seeing as Setanta got all the rights for most of the sports things, I had to watch the rugby WC on Setanta sport Ireland and TV3, I don’t know which was more painful, the world cup or the guys on Setanta and TV3.
I hate Sky more though, they’re so biased, and the BBC as well, I remember watching a Man U CL match and Ronaldo played crap and the lads in the RTE studio teared him to bits, rightfully like based on his display, and then I switched over to the BBC and they were praising him, showing highlights of his flicky thing he did a few step overs, it was ridiculous, the football and rugby “experts” on RTE 2 are so refreshing, they don’t buy in to all the media crap, they only ever tell the truth, they’ve great banter, not afraid of a little disagreement and they’re not biased at all, if anything they’d give the Irish players a harder time, no they’re fair enough though but if a player or a team played bad you’d hear about it, as you would if they’d been good. The BBC and Sky are just so dull and full of it.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=2riImtF0tw0.ye think Sam was bad..

On Erickson and the BBC, look at this one if your only going to look at one look at this lol!!
How the hell did I get on to this..??
I really do ramble. LOL!! Sorry.

51 ObaFan2 // Jan 30, 2008 at 19:58
Brown Ale, comment 19 agree again with majority of what you have to say, unlike these wanna be managers!
KEEP THE FAITH !
MA’s putting a whole new system into place and he obviously didn’t want to do it with BSA here so the sooner he left the better for the club!
52 Bren // Jan 30, 2008 at 22:29
Well said broon ale.
There is very little point in doing deals now when we can get better players in the summer. I’m sure the money is there, but Keegan is right - there’s not much quality available in January.
Now’s the time to stick out the rest of the season, get behind the lads and have faith in the team running Newcastle.
