Newcastle United were level with Middlesbrough at half time this afternoon 0-0, after having most of the play but showing no bite in attack whatsoever.
But after 5 minutes Newcastle scored a perfectly good goal which the referee amazingly disallowed. Emre floated in a corner and goalkeeper Schwarzer dropped the ball, and Owen poked the ball home, but the referee amazingly disallowed the goal - a clear mistake.
TV replays showed the Middlesbrough goalkeeper wasn’t even touched, never mind being shoved. A very poor decision by referee Mike Dean which cost Newcastle dearly.
But we are showing absolutely no cut and thrust up front and it becomes even more amazing that we haven’t improved the squad in the January transfer window. There were no more clear cut chances in a game very reminiscent of the Bolton game, unfortunately.
Newcastle are having all the play but Middlesbrough are finding it very easy to contain Newcastle’s attacks, which are very slow building up. Duff, Emre and N’Zogbia are showing up quite well for Newcastle, but we really have to raise our game to a much faster pace in the second half.
We’re not sure what Smith is supposed to be doing up front because he is not winning any headers in the air at all, and not doing much at all quite honestly, and just keeps giving free kicks away.
Hopefully Keagan will bring on Mark Viduka so we have a bit of aerial power up front.
If Middlesbrough decide to attack, rather than hold out for a draw, in the second half, they have a chance of collecting all 3 points this afternoon.
Newcastle must raise their game significantly to get the 3 points we so badly need.
Teams:
Newcastle United: Given, Carr, Taylor, Cacapa, N’Zogbia, Duff, Barton, Butt, Emre, Owen, Smith.
Subs: Forster, Milner, Ameobi, Edgar, Viduka.
Middlesbrough: Schwarzer, Young, Wheater, Huth, Pogatetz, O’Neil, Rochemback, Cattermole, Arca, Downing, Aliadiere.
Subs: Turnbull, Boateng, Lee, Johnson, Grounds.
Referee: Mike Dean (Wirral)

Come, let’s win this. We haven’t get a win since I bought the jersey. Show them who is boss here.

Arsenal last week showed with ease and composure how to take the ball from defence to attack.
We unfortunately let the Smoggies into the game ( with the help of the ref!) after 20 mins or so.
More pressure on the Smogs in the second half.

I wonder who has the shortest squad in the prem, bet we are’nt far off

wtf is going on? u know the nervousness of the fans is getting to the players, so i have a theory, would they play better in an empty SJP? something to chew on…

This is a quote from one of the live text site things,
“Shay Given played superbly in the thrashing Newcastle took at Old Trafford recently and he is doing the basics well again today”
Does anyone else find something a wee bit wrong with that statement. Almost a paradox.

bloody offside - 2 of them
44 Eve // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:21
What a joke, what was the defense doing and there’s no way that we should be leaving with 1 point. It should be 3-1.
And Arthur Price, Given could do nothing about that goal, he’s kept us ahead in the match, if you’re just going to shout criticism at players then don’t bother commenting at all.

Apparently you’ve had you’re eyes closed for most of the season so far, what all you watch were the actual goals for Man U??
See this is what happens when people only watch the highlights, they start talking crap.

Givens quality, wuldnt want any1 else between the posts. So fck off Hadrian and open you eyes
54 briss // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:28
Given is one of the best in the world, 99% of the time always in the right position has the diving ability of a large cat and reactions are great too. He’s saves shots that he ha no right saving all through his career and still does!
55 Andy1 // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:29
Great Game. What an exciting finish! Should have won but we scored and got a point. Much better to watch second half but we went a bit too gung ho for my liking when we had scored against the run of play. Barton was great - and even Butt had a decent game. Defence still shaky though, and, in the end I am happy with the point.
56 Hadrian // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:29
givens a good shot stoper , hopeless and most other things
, seem’s its only newcastle that concedes ten’s of 30 yard goals .
57 arlyz1 // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:30
Given har played like that for ages. His useless on crosses, any good PL-keeper would have walked out and picked that one out of the air. How many goals like that have we conceded through the years? Newcastles defending won’t become better before we get a keeper who commands the box.
58 gloryhunter // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:31
Given’s a great shot stopper and gives the impression he is world class. He ain’t. He’s got poor positional sense at set pieces and this is due to the defenders not having a clue what he wants them to do. Sorry Eve. Given has cost us points yet again.
59 cloudstrife // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:32
for all his quality, Given doesnt deserve to concede so many goals. we need to build a solid defense around him. he just needs to control his box like a top keeper.
Barton was our man of the match in my opinion. if KK can get the best out of him, he could really be amazing. the 5.7m might yet prove a bargain.
60 Eve // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:32
Hadrian
You know most of the goals we concede is because of our defense.

butt was shocking … cant turn on the ball or actually pass it
barton looked very good considering the circumstances
cacapa’s best game by far
owen was poor apart from the goal(s)
ref was very inconsitent what spoiled the match
all in all … game could of gone either way and a point wasnt bad
66 Andy1 // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:35
Can’t say anything against Given because he has been unbelievable for so many years. Putting up with a shit defence and making more class saves than any other keeper in the league. The goal today wasn’t an easy save. It looped really high and looked like it was going wide to be fair. And there were a couple offside - could have been deemed to be interfering with play.
67 joe // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:35

70 Geordie Joe // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:37
once again the desicions go against us
71 Matthew Tom // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:37
Offside! Dicks on Sky Sports are saying the two of them weren’t interfering and Huth himself was onside, but when you’re Stephen Carr and you’ve got three men around you, how can the two of them who are offside fail to be interfering with your ability to defend?
This was the best Toon performance in a very long time imo, something to be genuinely excited about. If we’d had a half competent set of officials we’d have won at least 2-0.
Anyone know why Boro’s “winner” at the end was disallowed though?
72 Toon_Under // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:38
gloryhunter, hadrian, 100% spot on. For someone who is meant to have great reflexes Shay looked all at sea when the rebound was knocked in for the disallowed goal. Offside or not, first instinct as a keeper is to save the shot. And things he’s save 2 seasons ago he’s letting go. No acrobatic dives anymore - maybe that perforated bowel has limited him??
May have missed something, but where is Harper?
73 arlyz1 // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:38
Everyone defending Given and criticizing the defence; The goalkeeper is a important part of the defence, and Given is too cautious in the box. He lets his defenders on their own in difficult situations instead.

Hadrian
No, not really.
75 cloudstrife // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:40
cant wait to get Faye back. we need composure in our defending. we desperately need a leader at the back. the late goal was heartbreaking but i’ve seen promise in this team.

Good question where is Harper??
77 ShiNg // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:40
After Milner in and Emre out……..We nearly cannot pass the ball……….the game was controled by boro………i think it is the main point of lossing 2 points……..
78 gloryhunter // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:41
@Toon_Under. Harper is a smashing lad but he has the same faults. Shay and Harps have the same goalkeeping couch - I thinks he’s a deaf mute
79 Andy1 // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:41
The defence hasn’t been good enough in the past, but today Given was saved by Cacapa after he had pushed it straight out to 3 Boro strikers.
80 Matthew Tom // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:41
This is absolute nonsense being talked about Shay Given. The man is absolute quality. He was wrong footed with that looping header and even if he hadn’t been, it would have taken some save to get over to the corner.
81 gloryhunter // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:42
@Hadrian. No, not Reilly surely
82 arlyz1 // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:42
Yes it should have been offside. But Huth versus Carr can only go one way, so where was our goalie? Watching!
83 Eve // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:42
gloryhunter..he’s not asking cause he wants him to play he means where is he, actually where is he physically, cause he wasn’t on the bench.

We get Martins back for next Saturday’s game if Nigeria loses to Ghana yeah?
85 Andy1 // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:44
I’d like to see Emre and Barton together in the middle and leave Butt out. We attacked really well down the left - but the team wasn’t well balanced with Joey playing “wide”.
86 Eve // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:44
Matthew Tom, it’s a mental things, one person criticizes him and then someone else does and then it goes on for a while, it happens all the time. Doesn’t matter who it is. Like this discussion will probably die and then Johann will come on later about 10 odd comments down, when the topic is well and truly dead and start or Johann pretending to be someone else, I can’t remember who it was the last time, he made it so obvious though, he’ll come on and bring it up again and probably mention something about playing Harper again. He’s so predictable. A lot of people on here are.
87 azvael // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:44
I dunno why every coach we have put Butt in the starting eleven!!!!!! and we need a great RW this summer!!!!!!
88 Matthew Tom // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:45
Thought Duff had his best game for us since he came here, particularly the last 30 mins. We were tearing them apart down the left now and again, it was almost like 1996 all over again.
89 Chicken // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:45
Given seems to make at least 2 or 3 big mistakes every game now. I still think he’s a great keeper but think maybe Steve Harper is due another chance to prove himself.
90 dougnufc // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:46
Um…Do we get Martins back for next Saturday’s game if Nigeria loses to Ghana today?
91 cloudstrife // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:47
once we got our full team, Butt wont play. but we need a holding DM. Barton can do an excellent job there but it will kill his natural instincts to break forward. he’s proper quality though!
92 ToonKing // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:48
i’m furious. Is it just me or are the referees constantly making game changing decisions against us ????? Goal disallowed, penalty disallowed, yet they score from offside…..
i feel like crying, if we can’t beat this shite’ Smoggie team at home, what are we going to do ?????
Butt is appalling, Barton was wasted on the right wing, Viduka is crap, Smudger was much better today. Zog is killing me with his unwillingness to let the ball go. Our only hope is Owen, he was very good today, worked his ass off, but you can see that he hates coming deep for the ball and that’s what he had to do all day. Something needs to change fast..
..i’m really starting to have relegation goosebumps…
93 gloryhunter // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:48
Anyway. Pleased to see Owen score, and pleased to see KK laughing, if only briefly. Be honest, this game could have gone either way.
94 Matthew Tom // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:48
BUTT-OUT!!!
This is not the same man who shut out Argentina in the World Cup. He was always the ugly sister in the Man United midfield as well, constantly the one to be sacrificed when they had their full midfield available.
He has one good game in about every five, it’s just not good enough. Joey Barton and Emre all the way, with maybe Faye coming in when we really do need a really defensive DM for some matches.
95 Jamie // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:49
shay is to small to be a top quality keeper.
Look at the best keepers - Van der sar. Cech, Kirland, James - all well over 6 feet and command the area.
Cacapa needs to go, yes he reads the game well bla bla bla, but hes slower than my mum and hes as tall as nicky butt (need i say more) Look at Huth and Wheather for god sakes!! massive non nonsense defenders. If we had their defense and our attack, boy that would be a good team in the making.
Nicky Butt is pathetic, he cant run, he cant pass, he just about gets his position right and can make the odd tackle!! thats it.
Barton played well for a player thats been in jail and hasnt played a match.
Duff had a good second half, still to light weight!
Owen still too light weight and slow, bloody good leap for the goal though.
Zogs looked dangerous, cant wait for Enrique gets back so he can play left wing again.
Smith was rubbish again, should be actually be in the first team? no hes a bench player who can come on to ruff up the opposition once we are winning.
Emre - looked good, but played to deep, tho i blame Nicky Butt for being a knob and not being the deep player.
Umm overall a good point against a well organised, pretty tall boro side that is playing better than us at present.
We do have the smallest side in the league, god its frustrating.
Faye, Beye, Martins back and drop butt, smith and carr and we should be ok.
96 Toon_Under // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:49
Gloryhunter: not so much saying get harper our there, but just where is he? why is forster on the bench?
Matthew Tom: There wasn’t much Given could do about the goal, but why was he a statue on the free kick, and even more so on the rebound? Why did he cause the stuff up with Cacapa when he called for the ball and didn’t realise he was at the edge of his area? Why have his clearances gone to shite, and where are the quick long throws we used to see?
In my opinion there is no denying that Given has certainly dropped a couple of pegs this season. Yes he’s been great in previous seasons, but he’s set the bar based on those performances and this season he’s well short of that. FFS, he was better with Bumble in front of him (though Cacapa is not much better sometimes, even though he did scramble that ball out of the 6 yd box). He, like Milner got at the start of the game, needs a spell. Yeah Harper ain’t much bigger or better, but Harper seems to be more in control of his defense and his box.
97 Eve // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:52
Jamie..
shay is to small to be a top quality keeper.
Look at the best keepers - Van der sar. Cech, Kirland, James - all well over 6 feet and command the area.
Almost agree with ya, his height plays a big factor in his game, which you can’t really blame him for, but for someone barely 6ft he’s bloody good and he’s a class class keeper. But his height will keep him from being put down on the books as a world class keeper, even though he is one.
With the not controlling the defense in front of him. I think it is just THAT defense though because when he’s with Ireland, even though he’s just a wee fella he controls them brilliantly, I don’t remember him ever having a bad game with Ireland and I’ve seen a good few of their games over the last few years. Even this season he’s been super, MOTM nearly every game. Strange.

99 gloryhunter // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:57
Had on a sec about hight! Big Al and Sir Les are only 5 bloody 10 . Didn’t effect them much.
I’ve just scanned yesterday’s Evening Comical and there’s Shay giving an interview with anal oliver - stop socialising with that schmuck Shay. Spend time taking to your bloody defenders - you used to be captain FFS. Get down the quayside restaurants tonight. They’ll all be there.
100 Matthew Tom // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:57
Toon_Under:
I’ve always thought Harper was just as good a keeper as Given, he’s never once let us down that I can remember. Yes they are both too short for perfection, but both fantastic keepers all the same.
I agree that wasn’t Shay’s greatest game. But we lost out today mainly because of Butt being useless and the referee/linesmen being even worse.
Jamie:
I thought Smudger did alright today, won a lot of headers up front and gave pretty well everything he had. It would be nice if he’d actually get up there and have the odd shot now and again though. Doesn’t seem too much to ask for a striker.
101 Dalston // Feb 3, 2008 at 15:58
the team need to learn the basics: pass the ball around and don’t give it away cheaply. the opponents can’t do anything without the ball. our attacking play breaks down too easily and that gives defenders a lot of pressure. there are alot of criticisms on our defences, but if u read the numbers, you would find our defences are exposed more often than other teams’. our midfield is still quite messy, the understanding between the players is lacking, it needs time and training to gel, hopefully KK can do it quickly. on another note, I believe DM might be a better position for Milner.
102 mark // Feb 3, 2008 at 16:01
Eve - its not THAT defense, he hasnt bossed ANY defense we have had, thats Shays flaw, and Shay is 6ft 1, and kirkland isnt top class.
Jamie - your a thick b@st@rd
your comment is just shite “bla bla bla” and “i blame nicky butt cos hes a knob!”
fvck off and go and eat your jaffa cakes, you tossa, have a good old chocolate w@nk you tw@t.
103 Jamie // Feb 3, 2008 at 16:08
Basically les and alan were build like houses in their day! owen and smith are built like children and cant make openings with shear strength.
If you look back at the side that beat Tottenham 7-1 and Man Utd 5-0 at home, we were a combative, well organised side with a brutal attacking line.
Shearer, Ferdinand
Ginola, Lee, Clark, Gillespie
Even Steve Watson and Philipe Albert were big players! not to mention Darren Peacock.
I think we need to get the Physical side right and the balance for the premiership and also this means our flair players can be physically big ala Ronaldo, Adders, Anelka etc.
104 Geordie Joe // Feb 3, 2008 at 16:34
Wots the point in calling shay. Alright his kicking is terrible. but he is probably the best shot stopper in the country. It is fact that he is one of the best in the premiership.
Our defence shouldn’t get as much stick as it gets neither. 90% of the division defend just as bad but its just us that get singled out.

hehe oh my. I´ve just been waiting patiently for more to get on my side. Though haven´t been able to write much because of surgery and i´m still recovering ! But it´s obvious to anyone that Given aint a top class keeper. And though it aint Given´s fault he´s small then we can´t have him as our number 1 keeper just because he is the best small keeper in the world(in eve´s opinion at least). There is no logic at all in that. Nothing more for now. Hadrian has pretty much said it all
107 Eve // Feb 3, 2008 at 18:51
I was 8 off Johann, I said 10 down, 18 down (did you wait 8 posts). Can you say predictable.
Given is small can’t blame him for that, 4 people agree with you (I’m convinced your one of them). Is 4 a lot to you??
Did I say he was the best small keeper in the world no I didn’t. God why are you so bitter. You know Given is good, you wouldn’t be getting so upset about it otherwise. Just except it, Given is a bloody good keeper, a lot better then Harper. Like do you close your eyes for the entire match, like to you blatantly ignore the saves he makes or do you tell yourself that he doesn’t make them.
Why do I bother, it’s getting more then a wee bit annoying.

Jamie - “Look at the best keepers - Van der sar. Cech, Kirland, James - all well over 6 feet and command the area.”
kirkland, james best keepers? a? even van der sar is not one of the best…
you british think that everyone who ever played for your national team is a god! wake up! all of your keepers are (below) average…
best keepers: casillas, cech, buffon, handanovic!

I don´t praise keepers for ordinary saves, saves they should make. Then i´d be all day handing out praising
