We thought Cacapa had a decent game on Sunday, but was still caught out a few times, especially in the second half.

Claudio Cacapa - great sliding tackle saved a goal
But his fabulous tackle on 79 minutes definitely saved Newcastle, when it looked certain that Middlesbrough were about to score.
Substitute Dong Gook-Lee looked like he was going to put the ball in the net, after Shay Given had blocked one shot, but then Cacapa came sliding in with the perfect tackle to save the day for Newcastle, and put the ball out for a corner.
It was a fantastic piece of football from the Brazilian.
And Kevin was right to bring this up today, when he was interviewed by the Newcastle Evening Chronicle:
“The best tackle of the game was Claudio’s – it was a goal.”
“It’s worth a goal to us – there’s no doubt about it.”
“He was second favorite for a long while, but he wanted to win it.”
We cannot make up our minds about Claudio, to be completely honest. Sometimes he made good plays on Sunday, but then was caught lacking. He’s certainly experienced, but right now we think Taylor and Faye are probably the best two center-backs at the club.
We need one top class signing in the summer for central defense, and it’s such a pity we missed out on Woodgate, who’s looked immense in the two game he’s played for Spurs. But it wasn’t to be, and it’s now water under the bridge, and we’ll have to get over it.
Wonder who we’ll get in the summer for center-back? We see Norwegian defender Brede Hangeland of FC Copenhagen, finally moved to Fulham, and played in their 2-1 win yesterday against Aston Villa.
Any ideas who we can bring in at center-back this summer?
Comments welcome.

brilliant tackle, hurt hiself though
there are reports on fansfc that gianfranco zola is going to be given a scouting role at newcastle based in italy whilst working for italy u21 as assistant manager, that suggest to me that he will know all the up and coming italian stars.
quality if it happens

I thought again it was off side but cacapa did idd make a fine recovering tackle.
What he needs to practice imo is running back to goal with a 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 as the forwards always seem to have the better of him in these situations.

I’m a big fan of Cacapa. He gets a lot of unwarranted stick really which I think is unfair because he makes goal saving tackles quite regularly. He’s not afraid to get himself in the way and is experienced enough to be able to read the game really well. What he does lack however is a bit of pace.
I definitely agree however that Taylor and Faye is our best centre half pairing, but I’m happy for Cacapa to be third choice.

Cacapa is a good player. I wonder if he could maybe be used as a sweeper, if we could play a 3-5-2 system a little like this:
Given
Cacapa
Beye Taylor
Milner N’Zogbia
Barton Emre Faye
Owen Martins
Subs
Harper
Enrique
Duff
Viduka
Butt
Fair play it looks a bit weird but Keegan’s played wing backs before and this kind of team could be solid both defensively and going forward.

ED You keep changing your tune. Immediately after the match yesterday you slated Cacapa as not being good enough! Now you are saying ……………
10 Leo* // Feb 4, 2008 at 14:33
cacapa will, like i thought of rozzy come good in the premiership, he has had bad games, but that has to be atributed partly to the midfield, butt is not doing his job at all leaving the defence vounrable, this is the team i would play now martins beye and faye are back
given
beye cacapa taylor enrique
milner faye emre nzogbia
owen martins
bench carroll harper barton edgar duff
its a well balanced team i think

Why not Lucio from bayern munich he”s quality 29 years old loads of experience, and he wants to leave bayern in the summer we need players the big boys would go for instead of buying there rejects.

Wondering what will happen with the Edmilson deal Sam looked to had wrapped up in the summer?
13 kris // Feb 4, 2008 at 14:40
Stuff edmilson to old and very lazy, lets get players to play in one position and stick to it,we chop and change far to much
14 Dragoner // Feb 4, 2008 at 14:42
finally he gets the recognition he deserves, this guy is a veteran and we are lucky he even came from lyon to newcastle united
15 Whumpie // Feb 4, 2008 at 14:52
I thought Cacapa looked excellent yesterday, and was only caught out when the full-backs failed to prevent the ball being centred. Had Beye and (to a lesser extent) Enrique been with us yesterday I think we’d be celebrating 3 points today.
But does anyone else look at Cacapa and expect him to start singing Hot Chocolate songs at any moment?
16 Hadrian // Feb 4, 2008 at 15:06
we may not need a new centre back come the summer, dont write cacapa and faye off just yet , cacapas had alot asked of him really
im the first one to point the finger when a player makes a mistake , but i dont belive in throwing a foreign player to the lions in their first season .
the premier league catches players offguard, it must be worse for defenders who only know a slower technical game from europe , the more games i watch cacapa play for us the more i see him wising up to the prem .
he take’s no shit from centre forwards now and give’s as good as he gets since the pompy game .
him and faye are ideal centre backs really when paired next to a quicker defender , we just need cacapa to adjust more and taylor to learn a bit more .
17 thelongshanks // Feb 4, 2008 at 15:14
I though cacapa was excellent yesterday along with suprisingly good performance from carr.Think the whole team did well but butt was rubbish again and smith was winning headers but that was it, he has to be replaced.barton was averge and duff looked good.Hopefully we after top players in the summer.
I would sell ameobi, carr, barton, butt, smith and geremi and bring in deco, van buyten, barnes, quaresma(wish),bentley, downing and noble.
18 LoonyToon // Feb 4, 2008 at 15:21
Thelongshanks : Downing!!! The Zog and Duff are much better than Downing…Carr played him well yesterday, so much so that he swapped wings for the last 10 minutes…If Beye had been playing his pocket would have been ram packed. Cacapa however had another good game…dont write the bloke off yet…A partnership needs time to develop and I dont think his English is up to much at the moment therefore communication on the field could be tricky. When he becomes fully accustomed to the prem and his lingo improves then he will be great
19 Jammy // Feb 4, 2008 at 15:22
Before the Portsmouth game Cacapa was the strongest centre half in the squad, he was playing well, good positioning, good in the tackle. He had a mare at against Pompey, which was partly related to the injury he was carrying at the time.
He has come back in to the team and played well. The bloke captained Lyon and won the league five years on the bounce, not to mention numerous Champions League appearances, he has a pedigree and will improve for us the more he plays.
20 Leo* // Feb 4, 2008 at 15:40
hot chocolate songs?
he has got one of those faces that just makes you want to smile. i hope cacapa continues improving because if we can get faye infront of him and taylor and with beye and jose out on their wides then it will improve drastically i believe
21 Dragoner // Feb 4, 2008 at 15:43
i am happy so many people are backing this guy, you could see it in his face that his confidence was severely dented when he was substituted at Pompey, the crowd just need to get behind him and he will continue to be great.
Some idiots on here believe Taylor is better than him
22 Dragoner // Feb 4, 2008 at 15:46
Enrique Faye Cacapa Beye
This to me is our best defence, Taylor is young, he should act as cover and learn from the veterans (Cacapa and Faye)
23 JP from Gibraltar // Feb 4, 2008 at 15:57
Cacapa is a GOOD DEFENDER. Stop picking on our defenders just to find a scape-goat. Ever since we got rid of the useless Tit Bramble we have been constantly looking for a new defender to take the blame! This has to stop as we are Newcastle UNITED! We support the whole team and not individuals. Cacapa played really well again as he has been doing all our games since he signed (except against Pompey). Cacapa is better than Rozenhal although both will come good with more time playing in the EPL. I think we should play Cacapa in the centre alongside Taylor and Faye just above as a Defensive Midfielder. All three play with guts and brains and have all the attributes to become top players for us.
24 Bob // Feb 4, 2008 at 16:11

what about Van Buyten? or maybe Dawson ?
27 Geordie Joe // Feb 4, 2008 at 17:04
Am I the only one that disagrees that cacapa is slow. I don’t think he is slow at all.
28 wayne // Feb 4, 2008 at 17:29
cacappa is slow and doesnt have any pace but i think his reading of the game is very good and he has only had one real mare against portsmouth give him a chance to the end of the season judge him then hope we are not fighting relegation
29 Martins // Feb 4, 2008 at 19:11
Get rid of him
30 big pea ov the weab // Feb 4, 2008 at 19:12
@ dragoner i disagree with u m8 i belive enriquie taylor faye beye
is and will b the best way for our defence to play taylor and faye both have PL experience
31 big pea ov the weab // Feb 4, 2008 at 19:13
cacapa is good but maybe just use him as cover for taylor we r talking about future england star and probly captain and top ov the list he is a geordie this is his team
32 scottish mag // Feb 4, 2008 at 19:24
ppl cacapa has had one bad game, other than that he has been class.
how can you say cacapa is slow, when on soccer am’s team mates where a player is asked questions about them, given said that cacapa was one of the fastest in the team
33 tommyy // Feb 4, 2008 at 19:44
He’s not slow, he just lacks that bit of acceleration when people are running at him. I play as a defender similarly to Cacapa and i am a fast runner but theres a big difference between being fast and being able to quickly accelerate when players are running at full pelt at you.
34 leavy // Feb 4, 2008 at 20:12
i’m gettin a bit f**ked off with every one talking about taylor as a god just because he’s a geordie,
he makes the same amount of poor decisions probably more than the other defenders and he doesn’t get any stick because he’s a geordie.
cacapa had an excellent game and we’re still talking about getting rid of him??
35 James Oliver // Feb 4, 2008 at 22:02
I could not agree more with Leavy. It feel like people are blind when it comes to Taylors poor defending.
Capaca and Faye are our best CB’s.

36 Stamford Toon // Feb 4, 2008 at 23:55
Cacapa is a much better player than Taylor. Too many are swayed by his passion and being a Geordie (rose coloured specs etc). The only way Taylor should get into the back four is if Faye is to play holding midfield just in front of the back four. So I would go for Beye Cacapa Faye Henrique as the strongest defence, the alternative would be, as I said,to move Faye forward and bring in Tayor or Roz.
37 Leo* // Feb 4, 2008 at 23:57
ur right stamford toon… but who is henrique…? a signing i didnt hear about, only messing mate…
rozehnal hopefully will come back a better player, but he probably should have stayed and fought for his place
38 Toooooooooooooooooon // Feb 5, 2008 at 1:53
we are not looking for the right defenders but we keep on missing those good one - e.g campbell, woodgate maybe upson(many wont agreed with me on this one, but he is still a good player!) . we spend money on defenders that play outside the premiership which may took at least half a season to settle in…..why not go for EPL experience defenders?
39 hanzemre // Feb 5, 2008 at 7:41
yeah am 100% with all of u that Cacapa is good consistently good we’ve some exerience of such. yeah his pick-up is slow but reading the game very good with his timely tackles, interceptions, passings etc. He is getting better & thats good for Taylor (got some stupid madness at times) to grow 2b a good defender as Stamford Toon wrote.
40 ChrisL // Feb 5, 2008 at 10:13
Just after the match on on Sunday Ed, you were all for getting Cacapa out this club. Now you’re saying “We thought Cacapa had a decent game on Sunday”.
Why not just support the team for a few months? Also, please stop referring to yourself as “we”.
41 omg // Feb 16, 2008 at 17:50
taylor is still young. and he smiles too much and doesn’t have a serious look. not fierce enough for a defender. but he did save afew goals in the man u match.. or it could be 9-0
