There are several English players who are available and very experienced in the Premier League, who could improve our team appreciably for next season.

Kevin Keegan - will improve the Newcastle squad in the summer
Here’s some of the players we are talking about. We think there’s probably 5 different positions that we need players in to strengthen the team:
Center Back
Left Back
Central midfielder
Winger
Striker

Wes Brown - Manchester United - Center Back
The obvious player that is available for nothing in the summer is Wes Brown of Manchester United, and anybody who has been a regular starter for them this season surely would be a good buy for us. Wes can also play anywhere across the back line. He’s a free agent in the summer, so he’ll come at a good price.

Wayne Bridge - Chelsea - Left Back
There are a number of players here we could get. There is news today that we may be interested in Nicky Shorey – and he would be good but we think the best player for us is Wayne Bridge of Chelsea. It’s just stupid to have our two best left backs at the same club and he will get a lot more games at Newcastle United. We think we could prise Wayne away from Stamford bridge with the potential of playing a lot more games at Newcastle than he gets at Chelsea. We should be able to get him for something south of £8M. If these two are not available then Norwegian John Arne Riise of Liverpool, could do a job for us.

Michael Carrick - Manchester United - Central midfielder
He may be expensive but Michael Carrick would be a great capture for us – if we can afford him. But those fans who say he wouldn’t come – give us a break – he’s a Newcastle lad, born and bred in Wallsend, and often talks fondly of the club. And he would have been 10 when Keegan took over the first time at Newcastle and was just 16 years old when he left the Newcastle area for West Ham United, he was resident in Newcastle throughout Keegan’s first reign at the club. One difficulty may be the transfer fee, since Manchester United paid Tottenham Hotspur a £14M basic fee, which could rise to £18.6 depending on appearances.
Another English midfielder that would be a good acquisition is Steve Sidwell of Chelsea – again he’ll get a game at Newcastle, unlike at Chelsea where he has made just 13 starts this season. He also has to get first team games, if he has any chance of furthering his England career.

Stewart Downing - Middlesbrough - Winger
We would be at all surprised if Newcastle mount a summer bid for Middlesbrough’s 23 year old Stewart Downing. He may cost a bit at £10M, but he’ll be worth it and is the type of player Keegan likes in his team. Stewart has already played 132 times for Middlesbrough (12 goals) and has played 16 times for England.

Dean Ashton - West Ham United - Striker
Dean Ashton can put the ball in the net, and he may be a good buy for Newcastle in the summer. He’s had a so so season but we still think he’s the nearest thing in English Football to the way Alan Shearer played - and that can’t be too bad. He could also work well with Michael Owen (and Oba Martins) and we could probably get him for around £8M.
What do you think about these players?
Who should Newcastle be after in the summer?
Let us know - comments welcome.

i like the idea of all the english players… except wes brown
2 sparetheman // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:10
Yes please to the first three. I realistically don’t see any of them coming though.
Still hoping we keep Zog, in which case Downing is a bit pointless. Aston is a bit overrated for me and we’ve got a striker just like him in Viduka (we just don’t use him for some bizarre reason).
3 Tom_Toon // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:12
Downing - Shit
Wes Brown - Proper shit
Bridge - Good but injured alot
Ashton - Good but always injured
Carrick - Good but too expensive
To be honest i could give a flying fk what nationaility they are.
LB/LM - Maxwell
CB - Shittu
CDM - Rolfes
RM/CAM - Kahlenberg
ST - De Melo
4 Ian_McP // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:19
I like all those ideas, except i would add david bentley on, even though a top 4 team may bid for him.
5 NUFCFAN // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:26
we couldnt get half of these players.
hasnt wes brown already turned us down this season? - also dont rate him.
carrick - why would he leave one of the biggest clubs in the world where he is going to pick up medals year after year. And the amount of money he would cost would be huge. We could buy two great prospects UK based or foreign based.
Downing, cant say that i really rate him - bit like milner pretty average, not quick enough, and goes missing alot too.
ashton, i like, and bridge but like Tom_Toon said always injured.
6 sparetheman // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:27
Wes Brown gets a bad rep but Man Utd haven’t missed Gary Neville one iota this season and that’s thanks to Wes Brown. He’s not been very good in the past but he’s improved loads.
7 Pete // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:31
Gotta agree with Tom_Toon on the nationality subject. Who cares where they are from as long as they are good players?
That said tho, I’m not sure how sensible it would be using Football Manager 2008 as reference for future incoming transfers.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I just hate taking scraps from the big boys. How many times has that actually paid off for the poor buying club?
Wes Brown would be proper shit in Newcastle. No idea why we would need Downing, I do rate him, but we already have Duff/Zog in that position.
Dean Ashton is injury prone, and let’s be fair.. he’s not THAT good.
Bridge/Carrick would be decent buys, althought too expensive i guess. I’m still doubtful as too how much money we actually have to spend. I don’t trust the journalists one little bit on that subject.

well i want these players instead of those named in the article above !!!!
CAM - Pablo Aimar - Real Zaragoza - age:28
LWM - Tran Barnetta - Leverkusen - age22
RWM- Roberto Hilbert - Stuttgart - age22
RWB - Anothony Vanden Borre - Genoa - age:19
FWD - Mario Gomez - Stuttgart age:21
CM - Daniele Dessena - Parma age:21
CDM - de Jong - HSV - age:22
FWD - Tamas Priskin - Watford - age:19
LWB - Sebastian Pocognoli - Alkmaar - age:19
and i will love to see these players leavin da club
Smith (hes shit )
Ameobi (bettr than smith)
Carr(fat, slow )
Butt (hes shit)
Faye
N’ Zog (if he wants to leave)
Harper (hes old now, we need a gd backup keeper)
Geremi (did played well for his country buh i dun think he was a gd signin )
Duff (he has becom a injury prone n since comin back from injury he havnt been quite impressive)
Barton (not the type for toon)
n thts it
9 Bill F // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:46
Tom-Toon I mentioned De-Melo a few weeks back and you were straight on my case, how come you suddenly rate him.
The English man I want us to get is Crouch now he would be a plus. Another would be SWP. I agree with Maxwell he doesn’t seem to be a first choice for his team (Milan I think or is it Inter)
10 Sweardoon // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:46
None of those will come to Newcastle. Shorey is the more likely left-back to be signed (still don’t think he’s all that likely, regardless of contract situation) and Wes Brown would look the dodgy player he is without the rest of the Man Poo team to cover his arse.
11 Tom_Toon // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:48
Bill F, months back and to be fair i saw him last season, he was pretty bad, then you mentioned him beginning of this seson, he scored a few goals but i didnt think he was going to be consistent but he has been, i think its 11 goals in 19 games for him and since there arent to many young tall strikers who can also use ther feet around that we could get, i thought id change my tune on him.
Le Mans (His team) are doing very well this season and everyone is playing well around him.
12 Tripp // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:50
We’re going to have to 1.) invest in quality youth. It’s the only sustainable way forward. 2.) Buy these so called ‘cast offs’ because they’re likely the only players that are going to be willing to come to a mid-table club with no UEFA prospects. It’s those guys that are gonna get us higher up the table and into Europe. Then we can think about signed the shit-hot players who can take us a step further.
13 scott9 // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:50
tom_toon u can come out with these names but they would take time to adapt and i dont no about anybody else but i aint heard of them all of them 5 even if its sidwell instead off carrick cause lets be onist we aint gonna get carrick even if he is a geordie in the position we are now anyway and fergusson definatley would not sell so lets put that one to bed
14 Toon for life. // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:55
Carrick- Alot of money, But we can afford him. Could get him.
Ashton- I rate this lad very highly, Have done since he was at Norwich. Just the type of striker to partner Micheal Owen and will bring the best out of him. Much better than Viduka and will get some goals himself.
Bridge- Good but Riise is a better option in my opinion.
Brown- Won’t come. Also not THAT good.
Downing- I rate him but is he what we need? N’zogbia and Duff are capable.
I’d have Ashton and Carrick out of those. Riise instead of Bridge.
Ed, Can you do a page on realistic attacking midfield players Newcastle could buy?
15 Tom_Toon // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:56
Sidwell is shit aswell, most english players that would realisticslly come here are shit.
I also wouldnt mind N’Gog as a tall young striker.
16 CJ // Feb 14, 2008 at 18:57
Tom Toon - Danny Shittu are you joking the player’s you are saying are shit are proven players unlike the players’s you say we should sign other than Maxwell they are unproven at the top level and would prob be like most player’s we sign fail with flying colours.
17 Martins // Feb 14, 2008 at 19:00
Wes Brown LOL another crap Man Utd reject
18 Geordie Joe // Feb 14, 2008 at 19:02
Carrick would be a great signing, He is one of the best passers in the premiership. Its no coincidance that when spurs sold him they went rite down hill. Get him!
I’d have brayne widge too but i don’t think any of the others would make us better.
19 Max // Feb 14, 2008 at 19:03
Ashton and Bridge, yes please, i’ve always admired them. Remember how well Ashton played in the FA cup final against Liverpool?
Sidwell? Why not. Brown and Carrick won’t probably to come to us unfortunately.
Howay the lads!!!
20 Robert from Serbia // Feb 14, 2008 at 19:04
Tom Tom-are u crazy? Shittu from Watford???
21 CJ // Feb 14, 2008 at 19:05
Sidwell might not be a player most fan’s would like but he couldn’t do any worse than Smith, Butt or Barton. I would have Faye and Zog in cm.
22 CJ // Feb 14, 2008 at 19:07
Exactly Robert, Shittu by name Shittu by nature he is a joke big dopey and clumsy i would go as far as saying i would rather play Ramage and that is saying something.
23 Geordie Joe // Feb 14, 2008 at 19:08
Sidwell turned us down to warm a bench so why should we sign him know. plus he is not even that good.
24 CJ // Feb 14, 2008 at 19:11
Joe who said we should sign Sidwell.
25 Mighty Mouse // Feb 14, 2008 at 19:18
From the players you mention I would only take Carrick and the word from ManU is they would let him go but for no less than 10M.
I am so fed up with us takin on has-beens from other clubs. Or in fairness they only become has-beens after they pull on the b&w.
I want young, hungry players with the world to prove (Bentley, Young). Not over-rated, established players with nothing to prove (Brown, Bridge)
Downing!? we love signing left wingers hey?
Love the shout of SWP I dont think Milner will ever cut it at this level, makes a great U21 player though
I’ve followed Ashton since he was at Crewe and have always thought he the most obvious successor to Shearer but since his injury I’m not so convinced, I mean if Curbs favors Carlton Cole over him…’nuff said.
Could’ve had Davies at CB, that’s the sort of player we should be looking at, the next big thing.
We are safe in the prem so we should be looking at long-term success not full make-overs every season.
26 CRAIGG // Feb 14, 2008 at 19:23
I personally would like all of them in for next season We would be much better off buying English instead of having hit or miss players from abroad who take ages to adapt.
Next season maybe:
Given/Harper
Beye/Ramage Taylor/Brown/Faye/Edgar Bridge/Enrique
Milner/Barnes Carrick/Butt/Emre/Sidwell Downing /Duff
Owen/Martins Ashton/Carroll
That is based on N’Zogbia,Cacapa, Carr, Viduka, Ameobi, Smith, Barton and Geremi leaving
I have also added Giles Barnes who i hope we tie up in the summer to Add competion on the right and in the middle.

29 Leo* // Feb 14, 2008 at 19:51
wes brown- maybe being free wouldnt be too high a risk. but makes lots of mistakes
left back- bridges shorey or riise would all be welcome if we could get them
Carrick- a great player to get, hope it does happen, but its all pipe dreams atm.
downing- would be a good signing, he has one hell of a cross, pin point
i also think we need a right winger- a.lennon would be worth a cheeky punt, but bentley would be great also, again a pipe dream atm
as for the striker i dont think ashton is good enough, i think having a small bid for darren bent would be better, he is big strong and fast.
we dont have to limit ourselves to england players but i think that article was very good

DGB exactly the team i suggested, also dont rate downing at all tbh neither wes brown. would like bridge or riise or ashton though, shorey seems to have had a dip in form recently so not sure about him, carrick id like but only for a sensible price(not 16m or w/e again)
shame we didnt get the two freebies in the last 2 summers (sol campbell and distin) both solid experienced premier league players roeder was too cautious in his transfer dealings one of the mostfrustrating things about him imo

people like van der vaart , diego , modrik ….. all leaving their clubs in the summer , bound tobe able to snag someone of that calibre? chelsea or barca cant afford them all .

Wes Brown is shit!! Why do we limit ourselves to British players?? The best ones are at Manure or Chelski, and Wes Brown has to be the worst of them. There are thousands of foreign unknowns who will cost us close to nothing and be much better that what is in England. Aim higher and further and lets go and find the next Berbatov for example.

best players won’t join a struggling side, so we shall be looking for half-decent players who wanna play for NUFC. pls shun the Henry/Berbatov/Diego talk - this only make all NU fans look idiot, and not even Bentley/Agbonlahor realistic targets (wt the hell will make best uprising youngsters in the country join the worst looking football clowns in the whole Europe atm). pls sell Zog at a GOOD price and let go anyone in the team who doesn’t even try to give 100%. englishmen or not - really doesn’t matter, nor is up to MA or KK to choose if they do wanna improve the team …
50 KKN39 // Feb 15, 2008 at 6:38
realistic targets & decent footballers who MAY wanna join us for football, not just silly pensioner $:
LB - Bridge / Shorey
RW/AM - Arshavin
ST - Pandev (for part-exch w/ Roz?)
LW - Aiden McGeady (if Zog goes)
DM - anyone - there are too many ppl who can run, tackle (for a reason) and make simple short passes better than Butt or Smith do
Edgar, Kadar and Ramage should play much bigger roles in the 1st team; Enrique, LuaLua, Carroll should either be in the starting lineup or warming the bench WEEK-IN WEEK-OUT.
build the team around Owen, Emre, Faye, Beye; Vid, Martins, Duff, Milner, Barton, Taylor, Cacapa are all useful players worth keeping
51 AdamCF // Feb 15, 2008 at 7:40
Is there any reason as to why we don’t back the current squad, as their confidence is low?
There is always the necessary squad rotations with players that are too old or not good enough however, I don’t think that the team needs that many changes. 3 players at most is necessary and plenty of youth to bolster the squad. Europe in 2010 here we come
52 Jimmie // Feb 15, 2008 at 8:15
Bridge and Carrick, Yes! But non of those others. Do what it takes to bring Van der vaart, Jonny Heitinga and Johan Elmander here.
53 Ian // Feb 15, 2008 at 8:22
I would only bring in Ashton if Viduka was leaving, then I would also buy another as we will be selling Shola too.
Djibril Cisse is the man I would target, Manchester City tried to get him in January but he wouldnt leave mid season. Let us be straight in and get him signed up before the rest, he is probably the fastest player I have ever seen, tall and strong, just what we need, I think he could play alongside any of our existing players but I would love to see another quick player alongside Martins, Nzogbia, Milner and Martins are good, but another quick player who wouldnt slow their play down but is tall for the set play etc would be brilliant.
He is fast aggressive and clever, he also has been succesful in the premiership so there isnt that element of doubt.

I think to be realistic we have to go for all those names and see what comes out? If MA does not spend big and I mean big, then it’s game over. He is already brining in young players -along our top exciting young crop we already have-but we need to look after today as well. We will be operating in a tough transfer market. So we might have to take a gamble on players like Wes Brown. The reason this high spend policy did not work in the past is because it stretched Shepherd’s pocket, where as this is a drop in the ocean to MA. That means we have the financial clout to force players to play. Will Tottenham’s board match the clubs ambition and take a financial risk, because at some stage they will have to-to meet the ambition of Ramos and the players. Other clubs will be forced to do the same, so the market will be very interesting.

59 Ian // Feb 15, 2008 at 9:27
Agree Marcus, if they are decent and want to play for us then great, if they are coming here for a final big pay day and take it easy, no way.
Owen is trying to do us over again saying he wont work for less than £100k per week I hear, worth every penny about £520,000 per goal!!
He needs to lower his wage to his current form and build in goal and health bonuses into his wage, if he is so good then he will earn more with bonus, we will be happy, he will be happy and the club will not be robbed.

Players i would like to see realistically!
CB - WES BROWN - As Ed said for free would be a good addition to the squad and better than we currently have in Cacapa and Rozenthal!
LB - NICKY SHOREY - I rate him higher than Bridge, a keegan type player.
CAM - KAHLENBERG. Really good young player with experience having played for Denmark . Great passing and vision also big and strong - would do well in the premiership. Known to be wanting a move to the premiership!
Winger - AIDEN MCGEADY - I really rate this guy, has the lot pace, passing, crossing, fantastic skill and improving all the time. Would cost 10 million though a better player than Zog though.
Striker - Not sure on this one really, Ashton would be a decent signing as said.Johan Elmader would also be a good player in my opinion for us
63 Gooderz // Feb 15, 2008 at 10:02
Here’s another name drop; Gokhan Gonul. He’s a young Turkish player who can play RB or RM. He’s a bit on the short side, but is lightning quick and very attack minded and could compete/cover for both Milner and Beye.
Watch him play for Fenerbache if you get the chance.

DC: dunne
MC:carrick
RW:bentley
ST:berbatov or elmander
sell:carr, shola, smith, viduka, geremi, cacapa, butt, given or harper. so 5 player in, 8 out…and give chances to: tozer, kadar, zamblera, lualua, carroll, edgar,…

I want better players than these, no no no to more Man U rejects, have we not had enough with Smith and Butt?
Please get rid of this xenophobic view that we should only play English players, they’re too expensive and if they’re in the England team think they’re far better than they are.
I want the best players and only using English players is restricting that.

I think KK mainly would look for domestic players at a reasonable prize range, and the likes of Bridge (lack of first team football) and Shorey (must leave Reading for a bigger club to improve) would be my realistic pick for LB. We could keep Enrique for back-up, he’s young and will improve. To partner Tayls in central defence we need an experienced professional, Dunne is realistic (Richards is not). I doubt the rest of the strong CB’s in PL (apart from the ones in th Big4) would be interested in joining us.. (Laursen, Lescott, Upson). We may have to look abroad for a CB. What about Albiol (maybe too expensive) if Valencia fail to qualify for Europe? For a playmaker (creative) CM I would love to see either Arshavin of Zenit or Diego of Bremen. Arshavin has said he would fancy a move to the PL, and could be available for a reasonable amount of cash. Keep Emre, Smithy and Barton. For wingers we may need an extra player wide right. Santana from Fiorentina, is currently benched.. Great winger, with pace, tecnique and clever crosses. Zog and Duff will do for left wingers. Then we need a strong holding striker to partner Owen/Oba. No one exites me in the PL (realistic targets), we need to look abroad. Fabiano of Sevilla and Cruz of Inter could be within reach. I’d also love to see more promising youngsters arrive. Bring in Demidov of Rosenborg (CB) and Huseklepp of Brann (LW/RW). Finally, get rid of the likes of Carr, Rozy, Cacapa, Ameobi, Viduka and Geremi.

Players in:
- Lucho (Porto): would provide the guile and creativity that we so desperately need in the centre of the park.
- Appiah (Fenerbache): would provide the necessary steal to compliment the likes of Lucho in midfield; whilst also contributing an excellent range of passes and the ability to shoot from distance.
- Joaquin (Valencia): would provide the width and the trickery down the right flank that we so desperately need; whilst also providing an end product.
Young (Aston Villa): would provide an excellent outlet on the left flank whilst his ability in dead ball situations can not be called into question.
Dunne (Manchester City): would provide a calming influence to our back line whilst having pace and power in abundance.
Sorin (Hamburg): An excellent left back who, whilst being on the wrong side of thirty, would enable greater attacking intent down out left flank.
Seitaridis (Atletico Madrid): A forbidible right-back with excellent international credentials having been one of the key members of Greece’s triumph in Euro 2004. An excellent man-marker who would provide an equally effective attacking outlet down the right flank.
Pavlychenko (Spartak Moscow): An excellent striker who we all remember from Russia’s defeat of England last year. An incredible predator in the box, who has all the attributes to be an excellent acquisition in the Premier League.

azeem, why did you include faye on your list of players you would like to leave?
73 cathal // Feb 15, 2008 at 11:57
agree about carrick and bridge. have my doubts about brown as a centre half but nevertheless a good freebie but we dont need downing as we have duff and zog, and i dont think ashton wud be a good signing, id rather c gudjohnson in from barca. maybe add edmilson to centre mid with carrick then?

CDM - Song
RM - Bentley (slightly unrealistic)
CAM - Kahlenberg
Big ST - Cardozo, my other teams player he looking more ready for the prem by the moment. I was worried for him if he came in jan but he looking more suited now.

I think in the summer it will be time to shed Viduka, Ameobi, Butt, Carr and possibly Barton. Whoever comes in to replace them will be Keegan’s choice, so there’s little point in speculating, though it would be nice to see Carrick, SWP or Bridge in black and white (or all of them).
In the meantime, I’ll be happy to support whoever is played on the day, as long as Emre isn’t left on the bench while Butt flounders in midfield, and Faye doesn’t sit on the bench with his arms folded when the defence is crumbling (4-1 Aston Villa anyone?).
Get behind the team we have now and worry about the rest later.
78 Ian // Feb 15, 2008 at 14:33
If Viduka went, then Ashton would be ok for one striker, but then we would want someone else a hell of a lot more fiery, fast and direct who isnt short.
79 dan // Feb 15, 2008 at 15:17
This is sooo unrealistic. We need to get up the league with the players we’ve got before any of these will even consider coming to us!
If we can get in the top half of the table, stupid money may just scrape them to newcastle. But even then its unlikely.
For gods sake people…we are in the relegation fight!!!!!! WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!
80 Greg // Feb 15, 2008 at 16:24
The only real players I would like out of those five would be Carrick and Ashton, I would say we have no chance at Carrick but being as Newcastle is his home town maybe that can help lurer a much needed center mid…Ashton would be a great pick up and I would love to see him slip on the Black & White he is a big physical presence and he simply puts away the chances given to him which is what we need right now…As for Bridge I would take Shorey over him without question
81 Ian // Feb 15, 2008 at 17:03
dan, we know that we are trying not to think about it!!!!!!
Martins I hope will save us, Gerami I am hoping comes back a new man and Keegan wont be stupid enough to replace Milner with him this time, he will play where he is best creatively in the middle, NZogbia is back after his ban, Beye and Faye are back so we should be ok now, just waiting for the next calamity to hit us!!
Trust you to spoil the break!!!
82 belfast toon // Feb 15, 2008 at 18:41
I think we should be realistic but their are some proper players out there who we could attract
Gattuso (getting old but a born winner)
Crouch (would benifit his career)
Bentley(if we signed the other two first)
SWP (he and milner can do both flanks)
jury is still out on the rest though i think if we started here we could atract some of the other players mentioned above
83 cocknose // Feb 15, 2008 at 22:25
most people on this site are bein unrealistic and obv play footy manager! why wud the likes of eto’o or villa sign for a team full of lazy bellends
84 Bots // Feb 16, 2008 at 15:17
I don’t think it matters who we buy. I’m depressed now. We have an uncanny knack of taking highly-rated players from all over England and Europe and turning them into laughing stocks.
85 robertsA // Feb 17, 2008 at 19:53
all of them are shit apart from carrick.
