Newcastle Interested in Kuyt - Hope Not

February 16th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 95 Comments

Reports in today’s Daily Mirror suggest that Newcastle United are keeping tabs on Dirk Kuyt at Liverpool, and may make a £8M bid in the summer.

Dirk Kuyt - Newcastle interested in him - hope not

The Dutch striker has had a poor season to date and was recently dropped form the Holland squad, because of his unimpressive form at Liverpool. Kevin Keegan is reportedly interested in offering Liverpool £8 million for the 27-year old, but we have no idea if this is true.

We’d rather see Keegan go after Peter Crouch at Liverpool, even though he would probably cost more than Kuyt.

Kuyt has made 56 appearances for Liverpool and scored 15 goals since joining the Reds from Feyenoord back in 2005, but this season has been disappointing for him, to say the least.

At Feyenoord his record was much better with 83 goals in 122 appearances for the Dutch club, but there’s a huge difference in class between the Premier and Dutch leagues. From 1998 through 2003 Kuyt played for Utrecht and appeared for them 184 times scoring 66 goals.

Bottom line is we’re not sure Kuyt is good enough, and certainly not for £8M.

There just have to be better strikers available than Kuyt in the summer and we should go after them and give Kuyt a miss.

What do you think?

Comments very welcome.

please please please please nooooooooooooo this we dont need dirk kuyt he is just not good enough i remember when we were after him last summer when roeder was in charge i was quite gutted we missed out on him but after seeing him play for 2 seasons im glad we got martins instead theres no comparision between them he is better than smith mind but still not good enough how he gets a game over crouch ive no idea rafa must be on medication

  • 2 Ausgeordie // Feb 16, 2008 at 12:19

Last thing we need is another reject from a top 4 club. Lets find someone not living on reputation. Our scouting needs to be better than just what for sale at bigger clubs.

  • 3 Robert from Serbia // Feb 16, 2008 at 12:24

go for Nilmar,Moutinho,Luisao,Eduardo Ratinho and Arshavin….

  • 4 scott9 // Feb 16, 2008 at 12:27

moutinho would be an outstanding signing but it will be a while beforewe can attract that sort of player and even then alot of them want to live in london

  • 5 Davies // Feb 16, 2008 at 12:27

Bit of a worry if this is a taste of what we’ll be going after in the summer.

We have an abundance of strikers at the moment, some of them younger, and less experienced than others, but there is definitely good quality there.

Proceeds from Smith, Barton (if anyone will have him), Ameobi and possibly Viduka might make way for another senior forward, but we should be giving more time to some of the reserves, as a lot of time and effort has gone into developing them.

Carroll seems to be blossoming and I’d be interested to see what Zamblera can do as well. He may only be 17, but let’s remember how old Owen was when he started getting first team action.

Also Lualua has shown a lot of promise when he’s played in the first team.

Shouldn’t we be concentrating on a more creative midfield and bolstering our back line?

P.S. Kev, I’m not saying that your dream of getting Thiery Henry back into the premier league is a bad one, I’d gladly have him. But if you’re insistant on buying more strikers, let’s be more realistic shall we.

Oh, and ditch that yellow card magnet Licky Butt. He’s shite.

  • 6 YEMOZONE // Feb 16, 2008 at 12:27

WHAT NEWCATLE NEEDS IS AN ITALIAN OR SPANISH HIGH PROFILE COACH BECAUSE WE ARE ALREADY TURNING INTO BIG LOOSERS THIS SEASON.

I HOPE WE DON’T FALL INTO RELAGATING ZONE.

    KEEGAN SHLD TRY THIS FORMATION

    ——————GIVEN——————

    BEYE—–TAYLOR——CACAPA——ENRIQUE

    ————-BARTON—FAYE—–EMRE———-

    DUFF—————————————LUALUA

    ——————AMEOBI/MARTINS—————-

MILNER IS TOO SLOW TO BE PLAYING FOR NEWCASTLE. SMITH HAS NOT SCORED A SINGLE GOAL THIS SEASON AND THE COACHES KEEP PLAYING HIM. BUTT IS NOT CREATIVE BUT HE KEEPS PLAYING FOR THE FIRST TEAM.

NEWCASTLE IS JUST LIKE NIGERIA IN THE NATIONS CUP

  • 7 Ben // Feb 16, 2008 at 12:27

I am a Liverpool fan I am really hope that this is true and goes through! I fear Rafa may hang onto him unless he gets specific offers of a decent amount which this would be. If true I cannot have anything but sympathy for Newcastle fans. You spend money, but often just not very well. Kuyt is a decent bloke who works hard, but then I can do that too! He is also pretty gormless and just not up to it. He will probably impress at first with his work ethic and may well score a goal or two as new signings often do, giving a false sense of what’s to come. But ultimately he would just be another flop at St James’! This is not to have a dig at Newcastle, but just to wonder aloud how warped some of your purchasing criteria and actions are!!

Have to agree with Scott about Kuyt getting in the team ahead of Crouch - madness!!

  • 8 scott9 // Feb 16, 2008 at 12:30

i disagree with ameobi being a possibility up front he shouldnt even be considered in my opinion cause hes sh*t and milner is not to slow i think hes just reaching burn out from playing so many games but even then i diagree with saying hes to slow hes just as fast as duff maybe faster

  • 9 LFC supporter // Feb 16, 2008 at 12:41

we will offer you kuyt on loan for shall we say 4seasons if it does not workout and you try to send him back to us we will deny he was ever our player
    in the first place

  • 10 ronaldeano // Feb 16, 2008 at 12:49

If we sign Kuyt or Crouch i will kill myself!

  • 11 ToonKing // Feb 16, 2008 at 12:52

    oh god no

  • 12 Paul // Feb 16, 2008 at 12:54

You have never won anything and have delusions that you are a big club. Let me tell you, you are far too small for Kuyt, Dream on!!!

  • 13 ronaldeano // Feb 16, 2008 at 13:03

Yemozone, only 11 players are allowed on the pitch! we NEED 12 on at the moment but its against the rules mate!!

  • 14 iraqi_geordie // Feb 16, 2008 at 13:15

He is crap and we don’t need another shiti striker ffs !!

  • 15 Dragoner // Feb 16, 2008 at 13:21

“If we sign Kuyt or Crouch i will kill myself”

this is the problem with newcastle fans. Some of you still seem to think we are a successful club and we should be getting better than these two, WE AINT! we are have been shit for years and these lot wont want to come to us. I dont like Kuyt as a striker but as an attacking mid he is decent. he cant shoot but is useful as he works hard, passing aint bad and is a pain in the arse for defenders. Crouch is a very good striker known for his threat in the air despite this being the weakest part of his game. He is most lethal when the ball is played to his feet. We need a player like crouch right now.

  • 16 Dragoner // Feb 16, 2008 at 13:24

We need a crouch-like player as viduka doesnt live up to his name no more. and we need a fast, COMPOSED striker as Owen doesn’t live up to his name now either. Midfield needs to be completely changed and we need a specific playing style so that players always know where they are supposed to be and what they are supposed to be doing.

  • 17 Ant // Feb 16, 2008 at 13:24

Kuyt would fit well into the team at the moment. passing is shite, cant score and no confidence.
But even on form i wouldnt want to see him playing for us.
i would much prefer crouch if we were going to buy one of the two.

  • 18 Dragoner // Feb 16, 2008 at 13:25

our defence is fine, once there is less pressure on them they will come good i am pretty sure of that

  • 19 Dragoner // Feb 16, 2008 at 13:25

kuyt passing aint that bad ant

  • 20 ChrisL // Feb 16, 2008 at 13:46

I like Kuyt. He’s a hard working link up striker & that means he doesn’t get that many goals (like Pedro), but the team benefits.
But I think £6m would be a decent price.

  • 21 rem // Feb 16, 2008 at 13:51

ronaldeano he meant either ameobi or martins! lol thats what the slash is

  • 22 Nicky Butt is crap! // Feb 16, 2008 at 13:58

dont rate kuyt at all! i agree we cant attract massive players at this moment in time, however we can do better than this. if we take 8 million we could defo spend it more wisely. what we need is someone who can hold the ball up, has a bit of strength and is young, hungry and will improve us………. DEAN ASHTON!

  • 27 Brian // Feb 16, 2008 at 14:16

Kuyt had a very good first season at Liverpool, but this year he has been s-it. If he leaves Liverpool i dont thing he will go to a weaker club in england, maybe spain or italy is better for him. He lost his father this year and he thing himself it has influince this seasons performance.

  • 28 ronaldeano // Feb 16, 2008 at 14:38

OUR DEFENCE IS FINE! How many goals have we conceded this season Dragoner? They wont come good cos they are shit, we need a new defence

  • 29 Leo* // Feb 16, 2008 at 14:38

kuyt has been played in a role which is unfair to look at his goals tally. look at the work rate, and what he produces for his team, i dont think we should sign him because he probly isnt the best we could go for.

crouch would be a good signing though.

  • 30 Ian // Feb 16, 2008 at 14:40

We do not need him, he is no better than Smith at the front, in fact Alan Smith is better in my view, neither have scored goals.

Djibril Cisse is the man we need to partner Martins, even Bobby Robson thinks that Owen is past his best so Cisse and Martins for me, Cisse is tall and one of the fastest strongest strikers on the planet, he is direct and agressive, with all of the technical skills thrown in.

With Martins and Cisse the oppositions defence will have to stay back or they wont be able to get back and defend quickly enough against those two.

  • 31 CRAIGG // Feb 16, 2008 at 14:55

  • 34 Dragoner // Feb 16, 2008 at 15:11

Ronaldeano you aint got a clue. Goals conceded have come from the overall team playing poor. There isn’t a defence in the world that could keep a clean sheet with our midfield who constantly give the ball away and dont perform their defensive duties. get a good midfield and our defence will show that they are good

  • 35 CRAIGG // Feb 16, 2008 at 15:16

    Given
    Beye Taylor Faye Enrique
    Milner Barton Emre N’zogbia
    Owen Martins
Subs: Harper Cacapa Duff Lua Lua Carroll

Totally the most balanced and pacy team with some passing, creative and tackling ability in the midfield

  • 36 Andy1 // Feb 16, 2008 at 15:20

I’d like Crouch. His goal record is pretty good and he deserves to play a lot more. Kuyt is shite. One of the biggest flops in the last few years. He is just like Liverpool’s Alan Smith - doesn’t score - so plays in midfield - offers nothing - but continues to get in the team for work rate. No Thanks!

We should get rid of the likes of Butt and Smith and bring in someone who can play football and isn’t just a Big 4 reject. We don’t need another one.

  • 37 CRAIGG // Feb 16, 2008 at 15:20

Dragoner if our best back four were injured we’d have :

    Carr Ramage Cacapa N’Zogbia

Still think we dont need to buy defenders??

  • 38 Andy1 // Feb 16, 2008 at 15:30

CRAIGG - that’s the safest line up. We have to play it. All the best players in the right positions and we should have enough to stay up. I think it will be a while before Duff returns to his best and there is no point wasting Zog in the mean time. I liked the idea of playing N’zogbia in the middle but i don’t think he has the confidence and understanding of the role. At this time in the season he needs to play where he is most comfortable so we get the best from him.

His passing was not up to much against Bolton and with none of the rest of the team makin runs he just ran with the ball. This is why Emre has to play - he is the only player who wants the ball and knows how to move it quickly and look for it again. Without him there is no passing game.

The rest of the team thinks the idea of keeping the ball is to fanny about in our defensive third and put the keeper under pressure. If Owen and Martins are playing the midfield needs to be right on form an want to get the ball off the defence and each other because long ball isn’t an option. We made life so difficult against Villa by keeping it in our half and not playing throught the thirds. Villa showed how effective long ball can be and made us look stupid.

Defence need to clear their lines quickly but at the same time we need to keep the ball - midfield can’t be scared to get hold of the ball and run the game - EMRE MUST START.

  • 39 CRAIGG // Feb 16, 2008 at 15:35

andy 1 Thats my point barton and emre can keep us the ball if Man utd dont have the ball they cant hurt us!!

  • 40 Ian // Feb 16, 2008 at 15:36

craigg - Djibril Cisse 25 years old, 26 in August, 6′ tall, scored 14 goals in 26 games in 2006/2007 and isnt getting selected very often, which is why he will move at the end of the season.
24 international caps, 9 international goals, and he is on form now, not another crap player who has ‘potential’ or will return to his old winning ways of the late 90’s, he is exactly the type of player we want, all of the ability and goalscoring capability we need and out in the cold wanting back into the premiership.

Is one of the quickest players I have ever seen, he can run faster with the ball than most defenders without, excellent player.

He is the type of player Newcastle need to partner Martins and Nzogbia if he stays.

  • 41 ronaldeano // Feb 16, 2008 at 15:41

Im the one who hasent got a clue Dragoner? You are saying that our defence is fine when its blatantly fookin shite mate. Our defence has been shite for far to long, fookin smart arse

  • 42 CRAIGG // Feb 16, 2008 at 15:45

IAN Thats your opinion i personally think kk will want a target man/focal point striker ala ashton

  • 43 Prakash Varma // Feb 16, 2008 at 15:46

We have to overhaul the full team with some quality players than some bits and bit players. The defence and midfield has to be revamped at any cost.In the summer there are goimg to be lot of free transfers and that has to be utilised. Players like Decco, Rafel Marquez of Barcelona are quiting their club and both are quality players in midfeild and right back respectively. PLayers like Vanbuyten, Miaden Kistajic both about 1.95cm in height and are good central defenders For the left back we can go for Chellini who can also act as a central defender. In the mid feild We can Go for some more creative play makers like Kuyt, Dowining, Diarra which will cost less. In the forward line there are somany under performing players which we have to get rid off and go for one or two quality strikers to play along with Owen. Players like Barton, Ameobi, Faye, LuaLua, Martins has to be shown the door and Should try to get players like Louis Fabiano and Kanoute. I will sugest the following line up for the Next Season.
    Shay Given
    Steve Harper
    G. Chellini (will be able to get for 7 milon)
    Enrique
    D.Vanbuyten (3 Million)
    M.Kistajic (4 Million)
    C. Casappa
    S. Taylor
    R.Marquez
    H. Beye
    W. Decco ( 8 to 10 Million)
    S . Downing (10 Million)
    Van Der Vart (10 million)
    A. Diarra ( 6 to 8 million)
    D. Duff
    N. Butt
    J. Milner
    A. Smith
    D. Kuyt ( 8 million)
    M. Owen
    L. Fabiano (15 to 18 Million)
    M . Kanoute( 10 million)

As Emre and Zog wants to go in the next season , along with them we can sell Barton,LuaLua, Faye, Smith , Martins , Viduka etc. Net We will have to spend about 50 to 60 million to make the team competitive.

  • 44 ronaldeano // Feb 16, 2008 at 15:46

Remember the Liverpool game or even worse the Portsmouth game? Fine defence that is like

  • 45 Andreas // Feb 16, 2008 at 16:02

Dragoner, I am with you on this one. Ronaldeano, it doesn’t matter much if a team has the 4 best defenders in the world if the midfield (in particular) and strikers can’t play - even such a back four would struggle since they would be put under constant pressure (which is exactly what’s going on at NUFC).

I don’t say that we have a great back four but I really do think that we have 5-6 defenders that without a doubt could be a solid PL back four if we hade a better midfield (dmc, with vision and passing skill is what we need most to decrease the constant pressure on the back four).

Speakning of dmc - Rasmus Lindgren at Ajax continues to impress. 1 goal and 2 assists the other night. Only 23 years and would be a great buy in the summer, but won’t happen since no sane player will swap a regular place in Ajax for NUFC (at the moment).

OT - Kuyt joined Liverpool in 2006 Ed - not 2005. And since the vast majority on this board slag him of as shite it’s kinda useless to comment any further on him (even though I think he’s a pretty good player).

  • 46 briss // Feb 16, 2008 at 16:04

crouch is much better. plus i dont think he would want to come he rejected us for livepool to startoff with. this is bs

  • 47 ronaldeano // Feb 16, 2008 at 16:07

I totaly agree that the midfield needs to do more to help the defence, but that is no excuse for all the horific defending we have all sufferd for years. And it is horrific, the Portsmouth game, to name just 1, was a defensive fookin joke

  • 48 ronaldeano // Feb 16, 2008 at 16:13

Andreas, if we had the 4 best defenders in the world, we would score more goals. And not have to wory as much about the back line and concentrate more on putting the ball in the back of the net. The 4 best defenders in the world would be VERY organised. NUFC’s defence is all over the place

  • 53 CRAIGG // Feb 16, 2008 at 16:22

Dragoner & Anndreas: Your point is right to a degree but last season away at arsenal we had about 30% of the ball possession arsenal battered our defence and keeper yet they did their jobs we got a draw out of it.
So even without midfielders and strikers keeping the ball, If the defenders positioning and timing of tackles and interceptions is good then we would of amassed more points this season.

our keeper & back 4 that day were:
    Shay Given
Steven Taylor Craig Moore Titus Bramble Peter Ramage

Lugano plays for Fenebahce he was played at SJP last year, He was voted south americas best defender in 2006, He played for Sao paolo when they beat liverpool in the FIFA Club World Championship final. Fantastic positioning ,cuts out everything ,bollocks his teammates, Wins very header, good on the ball.
Robben despite the diving is an outstanding player

  • 59 Andreas // Feb 16, 2008 at 16:48

Craigg, I agree with you to a degree too. My point is that we have 5ish defenders (Beye/Faye/Capaca/Taylor/Enrique) capable of forming a solid PL back four. However, they (as well as the rest of the team) have to show up for 2nd halfs and we do indeed need to improve our organisation on the pitch. In my opinion a “new defence” will not solve our problems, but some quality in midfield will do us a world of good (as I said, such a thing would also improve our defence whereas a new defence arguably would not improve out attack).

  • 65 ToonJon // Feb 16, 2008 at 17:06

cool sounds like a player that we should get.
if he is a regular first choice for his team i dnt think he would be very cheap but i suppose we do have a millionaire owner so should be ok lol

  • 66 CRAIGG // Feb 16, 2008 at 17:10

Toonjon he also doesnt and hasnt played in a major league so we should be more appealing despite our shocking league position and lack of european football

Change mil to bil so we should be more than ok lol

  • 67 chrisbunton // Feb 16, 2008 at 18:11

Kuyt is a good player and he’s be a good signing. He works his socks off unlike Viduka and ameobi so he’s be a good addition to the squad. He may not score many goals but he’s unselfish and would create more chances for Owen. His workrate alone would pull defenders out of position and create space for Owen.

  • 68 Tom_Toon // Feb 16, 2008 at 18:13

We tried to sign Diego Lugano when we were still playing in europe andhe turned us down, hes 25 aint he?

    Kuyt is fookin shiz.

  • 69 Gooderz // Feb 16, 2008 at 18:36

    I’d go for:-

Elmander - tall and creative striker at struggling Toulouse
Alex Song - perhaps we could tempt him with regular football, he’d be great as a DM and taking the ball from the CBs
Lafferty/Chikhaoui - A tall player with 2 good feet and decent turn of speed and both offer this.
    Bridge - Good all-round LB
Dunne - Try and tempt him if Man City miss out on Champions league football.
McGeady - Definitely if Zog leaves, but could add pace and skill to any midfield position, and still only 21.
Kalouda, Annan and Barnes - 3 playerrs that would comliment eachother to be on the fringe of the first team and compete for places.
Gokhan Gonul - Pacey attacking RB who can play RM. Good cover for Beye or Milner.

  • 72 ToonJon // Feb 16, 2008 at 19:39

off the topic but does any one have a PS3 and play either fifa or COD 4 cause i need to add more ppl. My PSN id is jnufcuk. Cheers. Also MGS4 and GTA when they come out. Cheers again. i need more nufc supporters to play with lol.

i really hope this two week break has done us good and given a chance for KK to get his message accross.

  • 73 ToonJon // Feb 16, 2008 at 19:41

Also Craigg i think the players in capitals are realistic buys except Robben. also add barnetta, kompany, raul albiol, dunne, fred, kuranyi to your list and i will b happy haha

  • 74 ToonJon // Feb 16, 2008 at 19:43

oh and i wouldnt mind Kuyt as a squad player cause he will always play his socks off to try and prove to the manager that he shud b starting. so wudnt be a bad buy but not for 8m more 3-5

  • 75 CRAIGG // Feb 16, 2008 at 19:45

Toonjon touch wood we dont need a left winger if zoggy stays but Robben has only played 9 times all season and wasnt injured that long and ashley wants superstars and kev loves flair so??

P.S. this is my wishful thinking!!

  • 76 Tom_Toon // Feb 16, 2008 at 19:59

No chance of Kompany as much as id love him here.

He likes falir but he probably doesnt like injry prone overpaid whingers.

  • 77 CRAIGG // Feb 16, 2008 at 20:02

    Getting back to Lugano

Tom_Toon i didnt know we had bid for him when was this ??

And wikipedia has him down as 27

  • 78 Tom_Toon // Feb 16, 2008 at 20:03

We bid for him two years ago, when roeder first came in

    and yes he is 27.

  • 79 CRAIGG // Feb 16, 2008 at 20:05

He signed anelka, berkovic, mcmanaman and fowler for city theres a mix of injury prone players and whingers

  • 80 Tom_Toon // Feb 16, 2008 at 20:06

Fair enough but we dont need a robben + real played 16 mil for him and hes just starting to play constantly again after his long injury.

  • 81 CRAIGG // Feb 16, 2008 at 20:06

Gutted he is pure class we should have another punt at lugano in my opinion

  • 82 Tom_Toon // Feb 16, 2008 at 20:08

Juve hope to sign him i heard.

I wouldnt mind Toni Calvo, havent seen much of him except uefa cup where he scored against bolton, cheap, good, young right winger.

  • 83 daiv // Feb 16, 2008 at 20:14

Diurk Kuyt is a decent player and better than Martins who nees 10 chances to score one goal. Not the greatest forward in the world but who are we to be demanding the best. Lets hope we stay up and then we may have a chance to sign Kuyt.

  • 84 Tom_Toon // Feb 16, 2008 at 20:15

Kuyt is far worse than Martins. If Martins takes 10 chances then Kuyt takes 20.

  • 85 daiv // Feb 16, 2008 at 20:23

    Tom Toon
Neither are great but we have to be realistic. 4 point off relegation last season and who knows where this season. We will not attract top players.

  • 86 Tom_Toon // Feb 16, 2008 at 20:26

Yes but my point is for 8 million we could do a hell of a lot better than kuyt.

Gooderz- What about Topuz, he plays for the same team as Unal, pretty decent right mid.

  • 87 daiv // Feb 16, 2008 at 20:35

    tom Toon,
I agree but when have NUFC bought wisely for £8M…. Boumsong? Luque? Robert (who was OK but we could not even get a fee for|) Even Owen at 16M? Lets not begin to mention the dozens of players that we have bought for 4 to 8 mil in the last decade who are now nobodies. We have to have the worst record in the league for signings. Only the top 4 have spent more. They remain in top 4. Where are we?

  • 88 Tom_Toon // Feb 16, 2008 at 20:41

And Kuyt will be going down on that list.

  • 89 scott9 // Feb 16, 2008 at 21:59

i think dlassandro would be a good signing and maybe james harper of reading is a good player and could be a good signing for what he would cost

  • 90 Tom_Toon // Feb 16, 2008 at 22:11

I like James Harper. readng have got a few good players. D’alessandro just moved though.

  • 91 scott9 // Feb 16, 2008 at 22:25

o did he wers he at now i thouht hed been at zaragoza for a while

  • 92 CJ // Feb 16, 2008 at 22:27

Tom that must be you like James Harper as your back door bandit cos he is as shit as Shittu.

  • 93 CJ // Feb 16, 2008 at 22:30

Daiv- Martins has been disapointing for a while now but no way is Kuyt better than him i wouldn’t mind Oba to work as hard as Kuyt plus he turned us down to sign for Liverpool.

  • 94 ToonJon // Feb 16, 2008 at 22:41

just watching MOTD what about Xabi Alonso he clearly cant be happy about being theird fiddle to gerrard and maschrano also lucas so y not make a bid for him. if you dnt buy the ticket you cant win the raffle. although he will probs end up in spain. imagine carrick and alonso in the middle with kalouda and arashin as back up. or carrick as xabi’s back up.

  • 95 marcus owen // Feb 17, 2008 at 23:50

The main problem for us to buy Kuyt is he turned us down to joint Liverpool before and now he doesn’t perform there.
