HT: Newcastle 0 Manchester United 2 - Manchester Too Good

Saturday February 23rd, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 90 Comments

nufc-crest.pngmanchester-united-fc.png

Newcastle started the game well and matched Manchester United with some decent football in the first 20 minutes. But then some poor defending again, led to the Magpies conceding a sloppy goal after 25 minutes.

Keegan had elected to keep both former Manchester United stars Butt and Smith in the team despite some some poor performances of late.

But on 25 minutes Ronaldo got the ball on the left wing, and was allowed to put in a good cross that found Rooney completely unmarked at the far post and he easily tapped the ball home. Looks like N’Zogbia went to sleep and was nowhere near Rooney when he scored. Familiar defensive problems again for Newcastle.

Newcastle were seemingly holding their own until the break, and it was important to go in at half time just one goal down, but that wasn’t to be. A superb through-pass by local boy Michael Carrick put Ronaldo clean through, and Christiano had the ball in the back of the net before most Newcastle defenders even realized there was any danger.

The Newcastle defense was completely split by a single pass from the Wallsend boy Carrick.

Referee Foy gave out 3 yellow cards to Newcastle players in the first half with N’Zogbia Faye and Michael Owen all going in the referees book. But the Red Devils were falling like flies, particularly Nani who went down if you just looked at him.

Newcastle had started well enough but just couldn’t keep it up, and the Tyne-side club’s attack lacked any potency.

We’d like to see young Andrew Carroll brought on in place of Smith, who is giving the Manchester United defense no problems at all.

We need a big tall player in there to work with Owen. The second goal was very disappointing and it’s going to be very difficult now to get anything out of this game.

In three halves this year against Manchester United we are now 8-0, and it’s important the Newcastle players come out fighting in the second half and do not give up on this game.

We’ll just have to wait and see what happens - but there’s no doubt the half time score is bitterly disappointing to Newcastle supporters. We’re just not good enough on the evidence of the first 45 minutes.

Steve Harper replaced Shay Given at the break, and it looks like Shay has injured his groin again.

Comments welcome.

why or why is Butt and Smith playing

    for f**k sake!!!!!

  • 3 ObaFan2 // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:31

    well played

  • 4 Gordon // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:32

Their team is 5/6 goals better than us, so 8-0 over 3 halves seems about right I’m afraid…

Bit like getting angry about a lightweight being easily knocked out by a heavyweight.

So much money wasted at our club buying FORMERLY good players who through injury (Owen, Duff, Smith, Cacapa) or age (Butt) are nothing other than big NAMES…

  • 5 kris // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:35

    poor team selection again

  • 6 Gordon // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:35

Another stinking ‘pirouette’ by Taylor for the third… he’s nowhere near as good as fans think he is.

So much to learn and this isn’t a good environment for him to do that right now.

  • 7 ObaFan2 // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:35

    omg embarrassing

  • 8 stantos // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:37

Smith still on omg Barton off

  • 11 keith // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:41

Is any1 actually surprised by this? We haven’t competed in any of our recent games at all - I can’t understand why we didn’t notice the danger in January?? Why wasn’t a left-back brought in if Keegan doesn’t fancy Enrique?? Why did Keegan leave only Emre and Barton as our only creative CMs??

  • 12 bod // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:43

    Gordon spot on

  • 13 cooldj // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:43

  • 14 cooldj // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:45

taylor has had a mare. n’zogbia is not a left back. HOW HAS NO-ONE REALIZED THIS? HE IS SH1T AT LB.

oh and btw ronaldo is a twat

  • 16 ObaFan2 // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:47

  • 17 ObaFan2 // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:49

CM a little hot under the collar !

  • 18 drumma // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:49

  • 19 toon4lyf // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:49

barton was terrible today and butt is a disgrace ….smith played well in the first half

  • 20 rod // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:51

SMITH IS A CLOWN..WORST PLAYER ON THE FIELD. IN 3 minutes CARROL MADE BETTER IMPACT THAN SMITH

  • 21 ObaFan2 // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:52

lol Smith played well where ? lmao he’s clueless tbh, he’s a striker where’s his goals oh he scored in a pre season game !!!!!!!

  • 22 Marty // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:55

Was it not barton that gave the ball away for the second goal, pathetic passing n barely tried to get the ball back…..disgrace

  • 23 ObaFan2 // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:57

whey hey a consolation goal…. good.

  • 24 Hadrian // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:57

Harper should start every game , the irish brigade cant stay on shays nuts for much longer at this rate .

  • 25 azvael // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:59

I think Manchester was opportunist today!!!!! great header pass by Smith for second Rooney goal!!!!

  • 26 nufctj // Feb 23, 2008 at 18:59

    Smith is shite

  • 27 nufctj // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:00

  • 30 Marty // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:04

Gr8 to see us get a goal n 1 minute l8r there is alan smith giving the ball right to old team mate rooney to score.Man this is a bad day!!!!

  • 31 Momo // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:07

Were playing AWFULLY, Sir Bobby would probably do better than all these players on the pitch. We need to get rid of a hell of a lot of players in the summer as were not working well as a team

  • 32 nufctj // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:08

I challenge anyone to name one time that Nicky Butt ever passed a ball forward to a player in a black and white shirt?

  • 33 Hadrian // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:09

omg poor keegan , these players are shite .

  • 34 nufctj // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:09

    5-1!

  • 35 ObaFan2 // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:11

    Ah well, another game gone……………

  • 36 rod // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:12

To hell with the british players policy…The team would play better with 9 players without Butt and Smith

  • 37 Hadrian // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:13

shocking shocking shocking , these players are getting walked over week in week out , been like this all season lets not forget !
god help these next few weeks , as we looked shocking away from home against the bottom teams at the start of the season .

  • 38 Matt Lacey // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:13

Yet again, we give up in the 2nd half. Here I was expecting things to look up even if we did lose, but, no… apparently not.

  • 39 ToonKing // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:13

this is starting to get unbearable ………………. i love KK but were going down faster then a sinking stone…..

  • 40 Dinko // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:14

    embarrassing

  • 41 dougnufc // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:15

If Zog wants to leave, let him. It is pointless to let him stay to play at a LEFT BACK position, he is utter crap at that. Our defence was poor today, we kept giving Man U the space to go 1 on 1 with our keeper. Poor performance from the players, only impressed from Milner and Duff to be honest.

  • 42 stantos // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:15

I just think it can’t get any worse then it does, speechless absolutlely speechless………………. get your prayer mats out we need em.

  • 43 BIGB // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:16

i’m sorry, we need a new CB , these guys are no match and very overrated….

  • 44 Edd Case // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:17

We really are going down…no two ways about it - we are f~cked.

  • 45 Patrick // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:17

After this match, once I see Smtih and Butt in the starting line-up, I would rather step back to my bed. It’s simply a waste of time to watch these rubbishes to humilate our spirit.

  • 46 BIGB // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:17

    Faye is a CDM,

    Smith overrated and over paid….

  • 47 Kelvin Koogan // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:19

Is this the worst team we’ve seen in about 20 years or so? Smith, Butt, Duff, Owen are complete pants. Really shit.

Keegan ..get the youth in, its our last hope to stay up

  • 48 shanghaitoon // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:19

Hadrian why poor keegan? He put smith, butt and barton in there and zog at LB. We should have started with edgar, carroll in, maybe even lua lua they couldn’t have done any worse!!!

  • 49 Kevin // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:19

Again - Butt and Smith have guaranteed playing time. This poor business practice is what’s bringing us down. It sickens me to watch. Keegan needs to play players based on their performances rather than their names and histories. I love my club but this just doesn’t look like the Newcastle I know.
As the crowd rightly sang tonight - We are RUBBISH.

  • 50 shanghaitoon // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:20

can’t believe I stayed up to 3.20am to watch this total Sh1T

  • 51 jj // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:21

    5-1 again thats supriseing

  • 52 Kevin // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:21

And the worst part is this: Shanghaitoon is RIGHT. Young, inexperienced players, such as edgar, carrold, and lua lua deserve the start!! Do we really think these players are good enough to compete against a Premiership team??? Of course not - but they’re better than the waste who were on the pitch today!!

I’m becoming more and more confident that we WILL NOT go down this season, just because the teams below us are even more shite - but it’s hard to watch these games, lads. This summer will be DREADFULLY important for Keegan.

  • 53 gmans // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:22

im sick to see this every week..speechless..smith and butt are shit.every time their play, nufc gonna lose.that all..damn

  • 54 brad // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:23

you no before the game i saw us winning even 1-0 i had a feeling , looks like i was wrong infact ive been wrong most this season ffs

  • 55 drumma // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:24

theye are all overpaid .. down going down

  • 56 Kelvin Koogan // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:24

I think we’re going to the wire. Keegan please get Smith and Butt off

  • 57 nightfall // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:24

Looks like the only way to get rid off some of the players (smith, butt, barton,..) is to get relegated…

  • 58 Obafan // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:31

    KK is SA in disguise. This is what happened since;
    1. I was one of the first to yell for a new manager cause SA made silly mistakes in his line-up.

    2. SA gets the sack at the worst possible moment (or not if a replacement was already appointed). No he wasn’t, so bad timing.

    3. A soap of who was becoming the new manager.

    4. Finally we turn the clock back for 10 years and bring in KK; completely out of football and IMO just an emotional move from the board, but oh so bad move for our team.

    5. I hope that KK turns me wrong, but oh no. The most shocking is that he simply just not changes things from SA.

I was the first to call for SA’s head (like i already said), but only if things were going the good way. On the contrary I think SA would be able to take a few points more out of the games KK had. I really amaze myself that I think in this way about SA, but I think I’m 200% right.

ManU is a fantastic team, no doubt about that; but if you ask them which team was the easiest to play against, they will defo say NUFC!!! The other teams fight for what they are worth we just let ourselves been slaughtered with lots of goals.

Some KK statisitics (only in EPL):
    GF 3-13 GA
Oh and I heard on that we today conceded more goals than last season in total. We are becoming a real joke in the EPL.

  • 59 Kelvin Koogan // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:33

I really do hate the red filth. Why does it always have to be them. F**king vermin

  • 60 GP // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:35

Leeds next season should be good.

  • 61 Hobs // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:36

I really think this club could do good with a relegation. Then we’ll get rid of all the expensive crap, and the youngsters will get lots of playing time. When we’re promoted again, we’ll be a much better side.
If we stay up most of the shait players will stay here too and we’re getting into the same poor mess next season aswell.

  • 62 Whitt // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:36

    first goal on N’zogbia
    2nd on Barton
    3rd on Taylor
    4th on Smith

most on this site look for opportunities to chastise certain players (namely Butt and Smith). i personally don’t rate Butt at all, but he was much better than what you would think reading these comments.

we need to quit playing Zog at LB just to suit Duff. Duff is USELESS going forward. works hard, but nowhere near as dangerous attacking as Zog.

  • 63 Kelvin Koogan // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:36

I don’t think SA would have won the same games. However I was surprised at the KK decision.

  • 64 Whitt // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:37

Hobs, I was just thinking the same thing…

  • 65 ToonKing // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:37

i never wanted SA to leave but i agree with the rest of what Obafan said. Fat Sam would have taken more points than KK in these games that’s a fact. We may be playing a little better then we did with Sam but at least we got a few results and didn’t get humiliated every weekend.

  • 66 kris // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:38

i see no change with keegan in charge absolutaly no change ,i wasnt a big sam fan but i reckon if he was still here we would defo have more points,we keep hearing how good the team spirit is BOLLOCKS TO TEAM SPIRIT THERE TALKING SHITE WE LOOK WORSE THAN EVER,

  • 67 kris // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:39

Come on keegan be ruthless change atleast 10 players

  • 68 Obafan // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:41

Taylor was again at his highest level. What a f**l he is. 1st goal; not him to blame, but Zog who simply pointed at Faye. I say if Zog does want to move, then don’t let him play anymore; he just plays for himself and does not care what happens.

Second goal; fantastic ball by Barton; one thing it was in the feet of someone with a red shirt on.

Third goal; fantastic by Taylor; oh I love him (ironic!!!!); first playing 10 metres behind his defence so opening things up for the speed of Ronaldo and second did he think that he was skating or so. Really a shame that players like Cacapa are on the bench for such a loser!!! He would defo have won 5 televisions if we send in a tape after every game to America’ funniest home videos.

Fourth goal fantastic by Rooney and what an assist by Smith.

Fifth goal: 5 defenders versus 2 attackers and guess what the 2 win it.

And then Milner; lots of fighting spirit again son, but that just is not enough. Isn’t it time to take of your football clothes and go to play chess… Oh no to play chess you need a bit of a brain and you don’t have got that son….

  • 69 azvael // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:42

Lost against Derby is more humiliating than lost to Manchester 5-1!!!!! becauz a lot of team have lost to Manchester United!!!! BSA was shit!!

  • 70 Elliott // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:43

Hobs that’s exactly what I’m thinking.

It’s the only way we’ll get rid of the shite we’re stuck with cause they’ll all be too selfish to wanna play in the Champ.

We’ve got too many on too good wages to shift otherwise, even if we offer them on frees.

  • 71 GP // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:43

We should have never let Fat Sam in this club, this is his doing. Brought in shite like Smith and Geremi and didn’t get rid of the dead weight. Oh how I would love to have Roeder back.

  • 72 Mico // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:44

I’m a Red, but I hate to see Newcastle like this! Both our clubs have been the leading lights in attacking entertaining football and have fantastic support but you have one goalie (Given) and Milner that are good enough - and that’s it. I’m serious!

I think it is about time you forgot about your loyalties to past players and managers and insisted on a manager with a proven record of winning trophies - before it is so bad that no one will touch the job with a barge pole. It now needs someone huge like ‘The Special One’ to get rid of the *shite and attract some true talent.

I hope it comes good for you because you Geordies deserve it! You are an honest and passionate lot!

  • 73 Obafan // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:44

Sometimes I wonder if the players know eachother, cause how many times (Barton and Butt in particular) did they not communicate and let the ball bounce. Strange!

  • 74 Davey G // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:45

okay! from day 1 i said we were missing dyer!! The waster is what he was, but if fat f**k sam had replaced him we would have been laughing!(check out my early quotes). he should have gone alot earlier. but no, all the sam worshipers, give him time, it was f**in blatantly obvious he hadnt a clue wot this club means to us!! ” I WILL Play my way” Bolox! he bought smith!! What did he do for manure?? or leeds in their relegation season?fact is sam made 3 decent signings out of 9!!!! His tactis were shit and he has left us in a f**k load of shit!! wake up the Dragoners and the toon koon king and the rest of the numpties on this site, we are in the shit, tell it like it is and you will get 1mill times more respect

  • 75 Kelvin Koogan // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:46

I wanted Sparky. and I reckon he’ll whoop our asses next week.
Duff is completely shat as is about six other players including Owen, Smith and Butt Keegan needs to just throw the youth on.

Relegation would be bad lads, come on

  • 76 Obafan // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:46

azvael - the way KK is doing things we also should have lost at Derby.

  • 77 Mehzeb // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:48

Embarrassment week-in, week-out. I’m shamed to face anyone who knows that I support Newcastle United.

Every damn week. The same result. We score one, or two, and concede atleast 3. Well, that’s just dandy.

  • 78 nightfall // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:49

to many big egos in one team…

  • 79 Obafan // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:50

We really don’t need relegation. MA will sell and that could be the end of a club with a very big potential. Cause this club has potential, but it isn’t shown.

Oh and Given has lost my vote. He lost his credibility… Playing 1 half and then again injured I assume (so not 100% fit before the game and not being honnest). If that is the case, then he does not have to play for us anymore. Harper made a few fatastic safes or otherwise it would have been easily 1-8.

  • 80 Kelvin Koogan // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:52

I have to have lunch with a manure fan towmorrow.
    The shame.

We our such a complete shambles you have to laugh though. The worst performances I can ever remember from us.

  • 81 hanzemre // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:55

yeah we’re s**** as this team were too week to do anything right atm. moreover against such a superior team in ManU (thought they’re a bit tired). Too many players individualy not good enough to wear black & white jersey anymore. Butt, Smith,Barton,Milner were obvious in that category tonight & as were in many games b4.Milner was as usual trying hard but to no effect & overdid stupid dribblings all the time but didn’t how & when to pass/cross.Hate/sad to say it but even Steven Taylor the Geordie’s favourite was at faults so many times many this season.Just good as cover if we’d get a few other better CBs. N’Zogbia was as expected lost again in LB, no good in marking opponents /break move.He may leaves if soon rather than later KK still don’t want him to play at LW/LM/CM.Very clueless movement all over the park. Sad to see Butt & Smith still given the starting places & even played the whole minutes. What a disgrace to keep these 2 rejects from ManUre.As for Given,u’d help with just sit at treatment bed & give Harper a run of games.Nevertheless we cried for NUFC tonight but i seriously doubt the players like Smith or Butt even think of us fans all over the word moreover the Geordies suffering with their pathetic performances week in week out.

  • 82 Kelvin Koogan // Feb 23, 2008 at 19:58

hanzemre: Agree with alot of that apart from Milner. I thought he was oue of our better players tonight, not that that is saying much

  • 83 drumma // Feb 23, 2008 at 20:03

we need to do somthing we need players who want to give there all to prove that they want to play for the club and not the big fat wage theye get

  • 84 Macca // Feb 23, 2008 at 20:04

I don’t understand why they continue to play Given when he’s injured. He’s an outstanding player but Harper’s well capable of coming in, Given will probably need surgery on that groin which is like, my heart goes out to him because like ever since that West Ham game it’s been groin injury after groin injury.
Given’s an outstanding keeper, but he’s being stretched as it is, it’s not fair to ask him to play while injured.

  • 85 Dragoner // Feb 23, 2008 at 20:28

Davey G you talk shit! i dont remember losing 3-0 twice to arsenal, and 6-0 and 5-1 to man united under sam. You would get more respect if you looked at the bigger picture u prick.

i agree Tom Toon, no1 likes to blame taylor on here. he was poor and completely to blame for the 2nd and 3rd goal. He is one of the dumbest defenders i have ever seen. he does this week in and week out but cacapa was always gets the blame. im surprised people on here aren’t blaming faye instead.

  • 86 hanzemre // Feb 23, 2008 at 20:57

okay i blame Faye to score…hehe

  • 87 Johann // Feb 24, 2008 at 1:17

The blame game is getting tiring, I thought I never would think that. But really when we thank about it we can blame nearly everyone in the team for some mistakes. The team as one and the tactics are costing us this season, there´s no doubt about it.

  • 88 Mehzeb // Feb 24, 2008 at 8:19

I blame the lack of transfer activity. We needed atleast 3 players to come in. But we made no addition to the side, on top of which we loaned out Rozehnal (not that he was very good or anything).

If a few new faces arrived, maybe we would not be fighting a relegation battle at this stage of the season. Keegan himself admitted that he was taking a gamble by not spending a dime in the transfer window.

Well, now we know, his gamble is not paying off.

Utterly disgraceful. Sadly, Sam Allardyce may have made us play “boring” football, but atleast we did not lose 5-1, 3-0, and 4-1.

    What a shame, what a crying shame…

  • 89 Davey G // Feb 24, 2008 at 10:20

No dragoner, f**in moron, we just got thumped twice off manure and arsenal with allardyces team!! Not to mention the beating off arsenals reserves, oh forget about that one didnt we………….who’s the prick now you cockney twat!!!

  • 90 nightfall // Feb 24, 2008 at 11:46

well…we all know some players suck…i mean really suck…but the only one to blame for such performances is kevin…i don’t understand why is he keep playing those “players”…
