Hughton Asked to Fix Newcastle Defense

Monday February 25th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 87 Comments

Chris Hughton, Kevin’s new coach at Newcastle starts work today and he is being asked immediately to plug Newcastle’s defense.

chris-hughton-1.jpg

Chris Hughton - new Newcastle coach

The defense is the biggest concern with the team, having already given up 52 goals so far this season, five more than all of last season, when our defense was also weak.

We suppose the defensive reinforcements we brought in during the summer have not got the job done.

The 49-year-old Londoner was sacked with Martin Jol at White Hart Lane in October after Newcastle beat Spurs 3-1 at St. James’ Park. But since new manager Ramos took over the London club have gone from strength to strength. They played an excellent game yesterday to beat a good Chelsea side 2-1 in the Carling Cup, after extra time. A feat (winning a trophy) Newcastle haven’t achieved since 1969.   :(

Keegan told the Evening Chronicle today:

“Defensively, we need some work on shape and I think Steve and him will be a really good force together on the training pitch.”“That’s where we’ve got to work on things to get it right here.”

“He’s good with players and good around players. He’s got a good way with them. He’s an experienced player himself, so they know when he’s saying it, he’s been there and done it himself.”

Steve is our other coach, Steve Round, who is 37 and seems to be staying at Newcastle. Steve was at Middlesbrough and then England with Steve McClaren and is another well respected coach.

Hughton, as we mentioned earlier, played for Spurs for 13 years and had 297 appearances for the London club scoring 12 goals, before going on to lay for both West Ham and Brentford. He played for Ireland 53 times and joined the Tottenham coaching staff 10 years ago, so he is loaded with both playing and coaching experience.

It’s a tough but important task for Chris to start on, and we hope we’ll see the fruits of his efforts this coming Saturday against Blackburn Rovers. There again we’ve been trying to fix our defense for at least 10 years and haven’t been too successful, except under Bobby Robson.

Chris is highly thought of as a coach, and works very well with the players. From what we can tell he’s a very good addition to Kevin’s team. We’re glad he’s joined Newcastle United.

Comments very welcome.

I remember a certain Mark Lawrenson that was brought in by KK last time round, but to no great avail. Hopefully this appointment will be better.

I never heard chris hughton was joining us.Hes a top coach. When did this happen?

  • 4 Dragoner // Feb 25, 2008 at 13:32

we should have got him AND martin jol, im SICK of this blind KK worship

  • 5 Whumpie // Feb 25, 2008 at 14:05

I hope these coaches are allowed to work with the midfield too. On Saturday the ball arrived so fast in our goal area once posession was lost at the other end that they had no time to get positioned. I know Manure are good, but it was depressing how they didn’t even seem to notice that we had players in the central third of the pitch.

    Oh, for a Carrick…

  • 6 Graham // Feb 25, 2008 at 14:09

Dragoner - like it or lump it we have KK so dry your eyes and start backing the team! If you have nothing constructive to say then dont say anything at all.

From what I can gather Chris Hughton is a decent and respected coach. Good luck to him sorting out the defence - christ he’s gonna need it!

  • 7 Spurs Fan // Feb 25, 2008 at 14:13

Sorry to be rude, but I can’t believe you have appointed Chris Hughton. Take it from me as a spurs fan, I like the guy for his commitment but I swear he must spend the 90 mins working on a sudoku puzzle. Our defence at spurs only now he has left looks solid, the many years Hughton was with us our defence was a shambles. You might as well look for his replacement now as this guy will drag you down.

  • 8 Bill F // Feb 25, 2008 at 14:14

In a previous life Chris was asked to try and fix this little leak they found in the the ship he was on. I think it was called the Titanic or something like that.

  • 9 Whumpie // Feb 25, 2008 at 14:15

Dragoner - you ask for the head of every bugger who comes through the door. KK took most of a season to halt the slide last time, and anyone who expects different with a set of fixtures like these has rose-tinted retinas.

No manager on the planet could have got results against Manure and Arse with the problems KK inherited, yet we all act shocked. When you have a scared, confidence-battered, bought-to-do-long-ball, all-grunt-no-flair squad and you play against teams like them, you are going to lose. I don’t like it, but I don’t shout for heads to roll when it happens.

Yes, it’s rubbish at the moment. But all those comments about “it’ll take time” are actually true. 10 years of mismanagement really does take years to put right.

Let’s just learn to deal with this season being a right-off, get behind the team and hope that we can show enough promise once the non-impossible fixtures start that some good players will come here in the summer.

  • 10 Paul P // Feb 25, 2008 at 14:16

everyone. keegan can not do anything with this squad. alex ferguson, wenger, benitez, capello could not fo anything with the shower of s***e at our club, so i think its about time you got of keegans back dont you think. they are not his players, allardyce bought a mid table squad and that is what we have got, in the summer, when he has brought his own players in, got his methods accross, so am saying 20 games into the season, then you can judge him. I honestly believe we will not be in the bottom half of the table next season struggling for a win. The summer will tell us what season we are going to have before a ball is kicked due to the quality of player coming in. and he must realise now what we need.

  • 11 Black Caesar // Feb 25, 2008 at 14:42

Well maybe if Keegan had not been running a circus for the last 3 years and if he had also spent the last few years watching some football, he would have known which players to buy to strengthen us this last January!!!

  • 12 Paul R // Feb 25, 2008 at 14:48

black ceaser kindly shut the hell up !! he did try and buy players u muppit they just didnt want to come !! woodagte hmmmm

  • 13 derek mooney // Feb 25, 2008 at 14:49

black caesar - keegan joined NUFC with TWO weeks left of the transfer window. Even a manager with the biggest set of contacts book in the world would have struggled to approach a club, speak to an agent if given permission by the club, then tied down the unbelievable contract demands made by the agents of nearly all players worth their salt. have a heart man and praise keegan for not going for what standard is usually available in the january sales - dross.

I like King Kev, and i believe the Mike MortGan combination will work out. But i would like to know, from anyone of them or even the staffs, to come out and let us know just what is going on behind the ‘Enrique’ no-show saga.

On physioroom.com, which is up-to-date and accurate, does not have Enrique on the injury-list. So just what is wrong with Enrique, our only natural left-back and who is of potential. I’d really like to know. Poor training performance? Poor attitude? Out-of-favour or not match fit?

  • 17 Black Caesar // Feb 25, 2008 at 15:04

And I bet Woodgate looked at Keegan and thought …..hmmmm this has failure written all over it!

If you are a good enough manager you should be able to work with the tools you have, and the tools we have do not deserve the results we have seen so far.

  • 18 Jon // Feb 25, 2008 at 15:09

Let’s face it. Taylor isn’t good for Newcastle.

  • 19 GP // Feb 25, 2008 at 15:18

Whumpie, Sir Bobby did just fine. It’s more like 4 years of mismanagement, although that’s an understatement. If you’re on about Fat Fred though, then I agree.

  • 20 Gordon // Feb 25, 2008 at 15:30

“before going on to lay for both West Ham and Brentford”

I don’t want to know about his sexual history!! ;)

  • 21 Cyprus Mag // Feb 25, 2008 at 15:31

GP you beat me to it, Whumpie if you think Sir Bobby’s contribution was mismanagement you live in a different world to the rest of us. How I long for such times to return.

  • 22 Paul P // Feb 25, 2008 at 15:33

Taylor was at fault for both ronaldo’s goals. for the 1st, why did he do a 360 degree turn instead of running with ronaldo, he may have been able to get a tackle in or force him wide or something. his second, well was just a comedy of errors before he went clean thru. its just basic errors which are costing us games and points. dont no what has happend to him, he has had a mare this season like. they all have.,

  • 23 ToonUSA // Feb 25, 2008 at 15:37

So we get a guy that was coaching one of the worst defences in the leauge so much so that they see success upon his departure. Sorry for not being so enthusiastic about this appointment.

  • 24 Leo* I HATE NICKY BUTT // Feb 25, 2008 at 15:41

there is a big hole in the defence, its because the midfielders! nicky butt and joey barton arnt in the right positions ever!

given doesnt command his area either, and is a drunk

  • 25 Whumpie // Feb 25, 2008 at 15:46

GP and Cyprus Mag - Oops!! Yes, I was referring to Fat Fred - never Sir Bobby, who I respect more than anyone on the planet. Sorry for not making that clear.

Not that FF was all bad or that it was all his fault - just a big, cumulative effect leading up to today’s mire. Even KK caused some of it by canning the academy. Some of the kids we would have brought through back then would be mid-twenties and in their prime by now…

  • 26 Steeley // Feb 25, 2008 at 15:46

Glad to see no-one is opting for Barton in their teams/squads for the next match - you have to admit that despite the calamaties coming from our defence in the Man Utd game, Barton was BY FAR AND AWAY the single worst player on the pitch all game! His passing was atrocious and I reckon my little sister could aim a pass better than him.
Even if the little scrote doesnt end up in the clink we need shot of him…and quick!!
Such a shame that Zog isnt playing in AM (with Enrique at LB) as I think he really is the driving force we need. All I see every game is the ball go into CM and then passed either 5ft to the other CM, or back to the defence. Then when they do decide to pass the ball forward it’s either passed wrong (Barton!) or passed with such slow pace that the opposition indercepts!
Does anyone know what has happened to Enrique?? Is he still alive??

  • 27 Nick Dryden // Feb 25, 2008 at 15:47

I think we’ve missed a trick with Zola.
We need someone who is technically gifted to work with these players, not FA clones like Round.
As for Taylor, if he wasn’t a Geordie, he would get as much stick as Bramble. His decision making is atrocious. Would love to see Edgar get a run. He is class.

  • 28 valle // Feb 25, 2008 at 15:56

Whumpie… I agree with supporting your team and your manager, but thats not fair to Dragonar, he was actually one of the guys who supported Sam till the very end.

  • 29 Mr T // Feb 25, 2008 at 15:59

    Sack Keegan, bring in Jol.

I’m sorry, Keegans done no good at all, I didn’t think he would either in fairness, though I was nearly swayed when his presence alone helped us beat Stoke (or so it appeared).

He’s got a hard job sorting out our defense. Not that I’d even call it one after Saturday.

He’s got a hard job sorting out our shambles.

  • 30 nufctj // Feb 25, 2008 at 16:00

I see a lot of different ideas about alternative players/formations, etc. What strikes me is no matter how you arrange things, we have many weak spots. Our central midfield options are woeful, and I believe that is where our defensive problems begin. We can’t hold on to the ball, and we can’t slow down the other team, not to mention the fact we can’t create anything for our forwards. All of our chances come from the wings, where Milner and Duff are working hard, but not cutting it most of the time. No back line would do well with our midfield, and we have an unsettled and inexperienced back line. I don’t know what the thinking was in putting Zog at LB in such a crucial match against such daunting opposition, but KK knows things I don’t so he must have had his reasons. We can argue all day long about whether Smith and Butt should be out there, but who will we replace them with?Emre is inconsistent and often injured, Viduka is exactly the same. I am sure both of them will get a shot in the remaining games, but I don’t think they will make that much of a difference. We just have to take all points from the remaining games against teams that are below us, and hopefully get some surprise results against some other teams. I think we can get a point against Blackburn, and I also believe Liverpool can be beaten if we put together two halves like we played in the first against Villa.

  • 31 mark // Feb 25, 2008 at 16:03

Taylor is thick, ive always said it, ive followed up since he was 16, and he is an idiot, he is dozy, and wreckless.

Barton - was excited when we signed him, let him off regarding the drunken mix ups, but he is nothing like the player I thought we had.

    Newcastle United - Going down.

  • 32 nufctj // Feb 25, 2008 at 16:04

Anyone who comes on this blog saying we should sack KK, should be banned from this blog. IMHO, there are some people who come on here that must have a large amount of difficulty chewing gum and walking at the same time. Ya, I’m talking to you Mr T. Your knuckles must get awfully scraped up after dragging along on the ground all day.

  • 33 mark // Feb 25, 2008 at 16:05

Oh and, btw, We have had 4 heavy defeats under Keegan in 6 games!!!

    3-0 Arsenal x 2

    5-1 Man Utd

    4-1 Villa

the other two were home draws against Drab.

Under Allardyce, I remember 3-0 Liverpool and 4-1 Pompey.

No point sacking keegan, but the fat bstard billionaire should grow some arms for them deep pockets, the tight cvnt.

  • 34 scott 9 // Feb 25, 2008 at 16:05

i think we might win on saturday but only if we play a team something likje this considering givens injured a
    harper
    beye faye edgar enrique
    milner geremi emre zog
    viduka owen
i would give taylor a rest as he didnt play well on saturday and his confidence will be low.
i put geremi in there cause he played well at acn so he should have confidence he also has a point to prove to kk and i think he is a good player we just havent seen him at his best yet and he can pass a ball at least.

  • 36 nufctj // Feb 25, 2008 at 16:09

Black Ceaser, my old foe, we meet again!

Question for you ‘ol chap, if we’d have hired Jose F’in Moronyo, which games would have been different? and to add to that whom would we have signed in the January transfer window?

  • 37 Bosck // Feb 25, 2008 at 16:15

spurs fan the simple reason you’re defense is so good now is that you have woodgate playing there alongside king, not dawson and kaboul.

nothing to do with the coaching, just a far superior quality of player!!

  • 38 Ian // Feb 25, 2008 at 16:20

They can train the defence all they like, even the best defence in the World cannot take constant onslaughts, we need Martins back as our main striker, I am not bothered who is alongside him as long as it works, once they feel threatened by us then the pressure will reduce on our defence, the last few games they have felt so unthreatened by us that they have literally surrounded our goal in a half circle and had all but their goalie over the half way line, if that isnt an insult to the strikers and attacking midfielders then nothing is.
Owen and Carroll wont work, it needs to be Martins and another, hopefully it will work with Owen. If Owen and Martins works, the defence will already be split as they will have to mark two players properly, while the recent games I have watched they have tried to mark Owen with three defenders, if they do that with Martins on the pitch it would be one against one.
Rooney never got any service when he struck the ball in the left hand corner of our net, Ronaldo didnt have good service when he ran past three of our players twice, all of the top goalscorers in the premiership and create goals from very little, good service is a bonus.
We need to find the best two midfielders and stick with them, and get Edgar or Enrique at left back, that is what they are in the team for, use Nzogbia where he is best.
I am convinced two games with Martins on the pitch and we will be a different side, the difference between us winning at the start of the season and since then losing is mainly Martins not being on the pitch.

  • 39 A geordiedoonsooth // Feb 25, 2008 at 16:30

Black Ceaser must be a mackem in disguise he hasn’t a clue. We can judge KK this time next year. When he came in the 1st time we were in deeper trouble than this & he just escaped relegation on the last day & looked wht happened the next season. KEEP THE FAITH he’ll get it right

  • 40 Whumpie // Feb 25, 2008 at 16:49

Well said, geordiedoonsooth. A bit of pragmatism is needed. Just survive, then build. Until then, we have an important role as the 12th man - probably the single biggest factor in restoring the team’s shattered confidence.

How different the world will look if we get 3 points against Blackburn…

  • 41 Graham // Feb 25, 2008 at 16:57

geordiedoonsooth - we can’t judge Keegan this time next year. We have learnt that it takes longer than a full season to turn things around.

We can only judge Keegans progress in 2-3 years time. If you think were gonna go and finish in the top 6 next year forget it. There are teams who have been progressing for a year or 2 now and are miles ahead…. Aston Villa, Man City, Everton, Blackburn, Tottenham. Even West Ham and Middlesbrough have a head start on us for gods sake. So if its not looking all rosy this time next year please dont go shouting for Keegans head!

  • 45 nufctj // Feb 25, 2008 at 17:41

    Answer the questions Black Ceaser:

which games would have been different? and to add to that whom would we have signed in the January transfer window if Moronyo was manager?

  • 46 nufctj // Feb 25, 2008 at 17:43

Martin Jol as our manager, which results would have been different? and to add to that whom would we have signed in the January transfer window?

  • 47 steve k // Feb 25, 2008 at 17:43

  • 50 nufctj // Feb 25, 2008 at 17:47

for a NUFC blog there is way too much mention of Spurs on here. Why don’t the whole lot of you that do not support KK go piss off?

  • 51 Ian // Feb 25, 2008 at 17:58

The only other manager that I would entertain is Mark Hughes, but I am happy with KK, he has to work with the players he has now and it is clear that he hasnt been watching the matches under Sam’s control before he applied for the job, but he wouldnt expect the job to come up again so soon, all it will take is Martins to return to the front, mark my words within two matches we will look dangerous again, then he will have to look at the midfield with a different view, we will need players that can win headers and head the ball on and play the ball through for a running striker, we will win more corners, there will be more fouls against us, so more free kicks etc etc, our only mistake was Sam not looking for another pacey player either at the front or better still midfield, but that wasnt his game, listen to the master Bobby Robson, you need pace in your side, that is what I brought here, Martins and Nzogbia look like they have that, KK will have to play Nzogbia on the wing to feed Martins, McGeady will also manage that if we buy him in the Summer.
No worries as long as Martin is fit again, stop panicking!!

  • 52 scotty // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:01

how long had hughton been coach at Spurs? Seems to me while he was there they were rubbish. Now, with him gone they look a good side for once. My prediction - bad appointment.

  • 53 daiv // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:30

Why do we all talk about the team KK should pick. Total waste of time. None of us want Smith or Butt but they will both play this Saturday. So when you nominate your teams include them in it. Otherwise its all make believe. Anybody think Wise or Houghton are good appointments? No, me neither. Seems like its going from bad to worse. I wonder idf Smith can go 38 games without scoring a goal. After the 37th games without a goal, keegan would ppick him for the last game. I can run around like a headless chicken but it hardly makes me a good player. Whats going on Kev, is he paying your wages?

  • 54 Tom_Toon // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:38

Daiv fair point so here it goes:

    Butt |
    Smith |
    Thug |<–Sideline

  • 55 daiv // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:40

We need to fix the defnce, midfield and attack. We all know KKs teams cannot defend but I never believed this team would be so boring under him. Hes got nothing right and dont blame Sam. He was never given a chance…..4 months. We all bleat on now about Keegan needing a year before he can show what he can do. Sam was given no money and no time. He spent less on his entire purchases in the summer (purchases and sales combined) than so called minnows like Portsmouth spent on one player. Nice one Ashley. Any regrets mate?

  • 61 Dragoner // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:42

I too wouldnt have minded Jol, Tom Toon is exactly right, he was undermined by the tottenham board and he brought tottenham from a going nowhere club into a team that looked most likely to penetrate the top four. The structure he implemented in to tottenham is the reason juande ramos has a fairly easy job now. Craigg why do you sound shocked that there are people who want Jol, he was 5th last year and the year before, where was keegan again? oh yeah, at the circus! get real!

  • 62 Dragoner // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:47

also whumpie you need to get your facts right, i have backed EVERY SINGLE MANAGER WE HAVE HAD UNTIL THE END APART FROM SOUNESS AND KK. I was against KK’s reappointment from the start but just held my tongue, i will no longer do that. We SHOULD have left him, he had a good reputation, but now his reputation with the club is going to be tarnished. why cant people on here see it!?

i even backed the awful football sam had us playing just because i did not want to be fickle. i wanted to give him a chance. But it winds me up that the same people who wouldnt give sam ‘a respected manager within the industry’ a chance, are demanding i give KK time.

  • 63 Mitch H // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:51

Kevin Keegans our man. Its only the non-gerodie, no football types that post her that slag him off.

They were obviously either not NUFC fans when Keegan first managed here, or too young to remember, or just too thick?

One things for sure, tom toon, dragoner and black caesar are not Goerdies, not even true Newcastle supports, hence they dont really have a feel for what it means to support our team. KK is a legend here & always will be, end of story.

I bet ya none of them attend SJP regularly, & if they ever did, i bet they wouldnt dare spout the utter shite, that the constantly do on this blog.

    Thick: No
    Too Young: No
Wasnt a fan at his first coming: No (yes i was a fan)

and your right im not a ‘GOErdie’

  • 65 Stamford Toon // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:56

All those asking for more time for KK were probably the people wanting rid of BS in umber 4 months, and then pleased to see him go. I bet we would not have shipped so many goals under Sam even if we lost. Its only sentimental nonsense that makes KK followers try to stifle any adverse comments about KK. Get real and look at results, it is not all down to the players or Sam. KK has to accept some responsibility.

  • 66 Gareth // Feb 25, 2008 at 20:03

I’m a little underwhelmed by Chris Hughton - he’s here to sort out the defence, but wasn’t Spurs’ defence absolutely awful before he and Jol were sacked?!

  • 67 Punk Skunk // Feb 25, 2008 at 20:08

Whoever’s at the club at the moment, are staying at the club. At least ’til the summer: Better get used to it!..So constantly arguing the toss gets us no where, real fast!..
    …Ho’way the Lads!..

  • 68 Mitch H // Feb 25, 2008 at 20:11

Stamford Toon, your just another great example of non-geordies talking way to much about a club they dont have any real knowledge of & obviously have no real feel for.

Because if you had, you wouldnt constantly slag off & have a go at, all things Newcastle.

Keegans done it before & he’ll do it again.

I you arnt happy, just dont comment, coz we dont want to hear your pathetic whinging negativity constantly.

tom toon, dragoner, black caesar, & now stamford toon, the all new “four muppetiers”

Keep the Faith & Ho’way the Lads !

    Mitch H - The loner

  • 70 steve // Feb 25, 2008 at 21:19

Surprised at Hughton appointment, he was very poor at Spurs, their ability to win games was due to the fact that they could score a lot of goals ( something sadly lacking at the toon).

@Dragoner - I can’t believe you supported BSA until the very end and started slating Keegan as soon as he was appointed - lets face it Sam brought in a load of very average players who aren’t up to standard , that and the fact that Butt, Given and possibly Owen are looking past their best is giving KK an impossible task.
I’m just hoping we can get enough points on he board so we can buy some decent players to play in the premiership next season

  • 71 Dragoner // Feb 25, 2008 at 22:20

the point is steve, i have supported a lot of crap nufc managers until the end, but now i am just sick of it, i was against keegan from the start because i feel he should have left it, he had a good reputation but what are the chances of that reputaion being intact once he leaves this time? add to that he didnt have any interest in football for years, no one else would have hired him. It was a smart decision by the board to lift spirits, but what happens when the novelty wears off and all thats left is keegan and his “tactics”…nothing

  • 72 Dragoner // Feb 25, 2008 at 22:23

why wont people accept it, tactics are now a VERY IMPORTANT part of the EPL, nufc fans accept keegan is not a good tactician, yet they dont want to accept that due to his lack of tactics he hasn’t got much of a chance of succeeding. its like their getting 2 add 2 equals 3

  • 73 Dragoner // Feb 25, 2008 at 22:27

do people honestly think man management alone will take us up the table???

the only way i see kk succeeding is if we have a really good assistant manager, in which case it is not really kk’s doing is it?

  • 74 Dragoner // Feb 25, 2008 at 22:32

    by the way mitch h

thick….im studying business and marketing at degree level

too young….i am 21 so no i aint too young

and also mitch h, how can you describe people who are not 100% in favour of kk as “no football” types, that would mean the ONLY football types would be a selection of NUFC fans and no other, because its time to face facts, every other fan, pundit, manager or whoever knows KK is likely to fail, and the majority have said it on numerous occassions

i said it the other day, and i i’ll say it again, elements of what Jenas said were right, some nufc fans are deluded ‘living in their own world’ people…you lot keep living in your “wonderland” whilst the REAL WORLD sees NUFC crumble under poor decisions made by the higher management, and i mean that

  • 75 Dragoner // Feb 25, 2008 at 22:37

and no i do not care anymore, i will no longer sugar coat my words, its time for some of you to wake up… the only thing i now agree with is that these personnel are with us until at least summer

also, i do not know who it was, but someone stated that kk would be here for 3 to 5 years FACT!…i wonder would that person like to put a wager on that? lol

  • 76 daiv // Feb 25, 2008 at 23:11

KK inherited a bad team and has made it worse. Ramos inherited a bad team and is doing fine. Managers matter, not the money they are given. KK can only succeed with vast amounts of cash. Toon Army..Ramos or Keegan? Who would you choose?

  • 77 Hadji // Feb 26, 2008 at 0:14

Dragoner…We don’t need tactics we need MIRACLE.
Hi everyone, just got back from the ships and i have the next 5 months to discuss with you more often.
Wow what happened to our team.

  • 78 m. stockley (nicky butt is crap) // Feb 26, 2008 at 2:02

i like dragoner, he speaks the truth and its not always popular with tossers like mitch h, sorry mitch im sure your a nice chap and your optimism is great….but its the truth and what most of us are thinking… we all love this club and thats what we have in common but sadly kk isnt the man for this job now, i want himto be but i was laso a bit dubious when he was re appointed and our doubts are proving themselves… none of us want to be negative but is scary times and watching man utd rip us apart again on saturday just confirms that its going to be a struggle. we will support this club untill the end and try and support the manager but its tough atm… i know kk loves this club and will do all he can to put us where we should be, thats not in doubt, but im worried that butt plays every week, as does smith and carr and we just dont look like we can buy a win atm. im just a realistic person and i dont appriciate people on here pretty much saying that if you are not in favour of kk your not a real fan! bollocks mate. we could be in the conference and id follow this team till i die. its not about being disloyal to the team, its being worried and having the balls to stand up and say it… im still fairly confident we can beat the drop, but we find ourselves in this struggling position too much and people like dragoner and myself are just a bit fed up, which is reasonable, but i can speak for everyone on here when i say we will always stand tall for this club whether or not we agree with whats going on, but moaning and voicing opinion is fine! END OF ESSAY!!!!!!!!howay the lads!

  • 79 Whumpie // Feb 26, 2008 at 9:40

Wow. Ya leave a forum for a few hours, and Tolstoy turns up..

I think the pessimists are forgetting two things:

    1. We’ve had 6 games under KK, of which only 2 were remotely winnable given our squad. Ramos would not have won them, even with the vastly superior squad that he inherited. So let’s see how we do against the likes of Blackburn, Fulham and Birmingham before we claiming it’s the apocalypse.

    2. It’s not all it’s about the manager. The owner, chairman, coaches, physios and so on have all been poor for years and we’re catching the s**t from that now.

So Dragoner and co: let’s see how it pans out. I’m confident that we’ll stay up this year (just) then be mid-table next, and upwards from there. KK may not be a master tactician, but he’ll surround himself with people who will plug that gap. Most importantly of all, we now have a chairman with some business nouse, and a doshed-up, enthusiastic and cunning owner who is fully in tune with the manager.

Interesting times ahead - let’s see who’s right!

  • 80 Mr T // Feb 26, 2008 at 9:54

nufctj: in fairness, I think he is tactically inept and should not be in the position he is now, to ’save us’. MUch like your pretty much inept of any forn of sense, I wasn’t being serious about sacking Keegan, but I do think Jol was the man for the job personally. and to answer your questions you asked about mourinho, as the same applies for Jol, the tactics would have been different, as in effective!

& oh CJ, constructive, very constructive. Why not take your business onto sissyfight.com or if you strongly disagree with me, tell me why….is that not the purpose of the site?

  • 81 hanzemre // Feb 26, 2008 at 9:55

after a win (though Butt,Barton,Smith’ll be playing) this Saturday we’ll be better. lets pray for it .

  • 82 Paul R // Feb 26, 2008 at 10:01

    black ceaser

a pile of crap is a pile of crap … nobody can change that and i would say our defence especially are all individually poor players and make for a collective disaster i dont think any other manager could do much better. You can only judge keegan after the summer when he has had time. miracles dont happen over night. now shut it ! lets get behind them and lets beat blackburn fulham reading and the mackems and that will be enough to stay up although i already reckon derby fulham and reading/birmingham are doomed !! then next season lets kick on and make top 8 or so and lets get them foundations right !! IN THE MEAN TIME SUPPORT THE LADS WHO HAVE THE SHIRTS AS THEY WILL PLAY AN EXTRA 5% BETTER WHICH MAY JUST MEAN WE NICK A FEW POINTS HERE AND THERE !! IF WE ALL PULL TOGETHER WE CAN CONTINUE TO MAKE SJP A PLACE OPPOSITION TEAMS DONT LIKE PLAYING AND THAT WILL KEEP US UP !! TOON TOON !!

  • 83 RobNUFC // Feb 26, 2008 at 10:04

anyone who calls the premiership the “epl” needs a slap

  • 84 Stamford Toon // Feb 26, 2008 at 10:09

Sorry Mitch H I am not a Geordie I accept but I have been supporting the team for 60 yars, since my dad brought me as a lad. I am not knocking the club and I want them to succeed as much as you. However I said from the start, even before his appointment, that KK was not the right man in my opinion. Although you do not like my opinion I am as much entitled as you to say what I think. I do not suggest you get off this site because I disagree with you so what right have yu to suggest that I should not contribute?
I see KK has admitted it was his mistake to plat Given. Would Sam and his fitness team (now sacked by KK ) have taken such a chance? I doubt it.

  • 85 Mr T // Feb 26, 2008 at 10:18

hadji - where we were gettin results but playing crap all season, we’re now just playing crap and getting the results we deserve :(

  • 86 Kein // Feb 26, 2008 at 13:09

You can’t really compare Kev and Ramos at the moment..their players are class! Keane, Berbatov, Lennon, Hutton, Woodgate…

  • 87 Scott Hodge // Feb 26, 2008 at 16:12

I’d like to see Beye-Faye-Edgar-Enrique at the back on Saturday but its obviously not going to happen. Also Charles will leave if he doesnt get his place in midfield. Taylor has now been found out and it appears now that our supporters have seen him for what he is, not that capable. As for him being a Geordie well Edgar has lived 5 miles from St James since he was 13 years old and his Dad Eddie played in goal for us and was raised in Hedworth so if anyone is a Geordie then he is. Give this kid a chance, he was awesome against Mpenza a few weeks back and was man of the match !
