Keegan’s Management Record Over 50% Win Average

Monday February 25th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 88 Comments

We’ve been asked by some of our readers to detail Kevin Keegan’s management record so here it is.

kevin-keegan-123.jpg

Kevin Keegan’s overall management win record is over 50%

The following is Kevin Keegan’s overall management record to date including his second spell at Newcastle United.

Team From To G W L D Win%

Newcastle Feb5-92 Jan8-97 251 138 62 51 55.0
Fulham May7-98 May9-99 61 38 11 12 62.3
England Feb-99 Oct7-00 18 7 7 4 38.9
Man City May24-01 Mar11-05 176 77 60 39 43.85
Newcastle Jan16-08 Present 6 0 4 2 0

Overall 512 260 144 108 50.8

Keegan was appointed manager without any previous experience as a manager on February 5th, 1992 and went on to save Newcastle from relegation to Division 3 that year.

The next season 1992-1993 Newcastle were promoted to the Premier League when they finished top of League 1 with 96 points from their 46 league games.

This is how Kevin and Newcastle United did after that, by playing great attacking football, which was a joy to watch. It was season 1995-1996 when we just missed out on winning the Premier League after being 12 points ahead of Manchester United at Christmas.

Season League Pos Games Points

1992-1993 1 1 46 96
1993-1994 Premier 3 38 76
1994-1995 Premier 6 38 72 Disappointing!
1995-1996 Premier 2 38 78
1996-1997* Premier 2 38 68

* Keegan resigned on January 8th 1997 and then Chairman John Hall tried to get Bobby Robson from Barcelona, but Bobby wouldn’t break his contract and so Dalglish took over.

Surprisingly Bobby was replaced as coach at Barcelona the following summer and became their Director of Football. We often wonder how things would have been had Bobby not been a gentleman and stood by his contract. But that’s one reason the man is so loved - his ethics are sky high.

Kevin’s record is undoubtedly a really good one.

For the record here are 3 well known managers and their overall records in their careers - to date.

Manager G W D L Win%

Ferguson 1360 788 315 257 57.9
Wenger 1092 581 245 256 53.2
Mourinho 318 217 64 37 68.2

So there you have it, Keegan has a good record and certainly if he can maintain a 50% win average in his second spell at Newcastle United we’ll do just fine, thank you very much.

Comments very welcome.

wall virginity. that’s 2 in 2 for the big fella. what a strike rate.

  • 2 cooldj // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:33

hmm we should have gone for mourinho.

  • 3 daiv // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:41

    Ed,
Not bothered about win ratio ten years ago. whats it like this year?

  • 4 Ed Harrison // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:47

daiv - zilch zero zippo nought 0 nothing :D

  • 5 Leo* I HATE NICKY BUTT // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:47

cooldj really the wall virginity thing is getting old.

i am suprised that the record is still 50%

daiv you have to take into account what happened 10 years ago, we were in a bad way then, and it came eventually, have faith, we cant do anything else now till the end of the season

    instant sucess spells disaster

well ok it doesnt spell it but you get what my point is

  • 6 Leo* I HATE NICKY BUTT // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:48

    Ed you forgot nada! haha

  • 7 mikeygd // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:50

thanks for doing this ED, maybe some of the fans with an exception to moron daiv will start to realise we have the best man for the job.

  • 8 CRAIGG // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:53

Daiv you really think this is fair to judge him so fast saying we should of got this that or the other this is a crap set of players with no flair, pace, creativity or quality
6-7 players in this summer and people like you will shut up

  • 9 Gordon // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:54

@cooldj - eeeer, we DID go for Mourinho! Remember Mort’s thinly veiled statement saying he wasn’t interested?!

Bet you’ll want us snapping up Berbatov, Rooney and Cannavaro in the summer too…

  • 10 Hadrian // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:56

thank you ED , when you take into consideration , that fergie wenger and mohrinio all walked into massive teams with hugh infastructures already , keegans achivemtns should not be taken lightely .

  • 11 Gordon // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:57

personally I thought the appointment was misplaced romantic idealism but quite frankly the realistic alternatives (Deschamps apart) weren’t great.

Do we really want Hughes, Redknapp or Southgate?

Let’s give him time with HIS players. He should have money to spend this summer too.

If we’d judged Kenny Dalglish on what he did with Keegan’s players (before he ruined everything buying his own!) - we’d have got a false impression there too!!

  • 12 Gordon // Feb 25, 2008 at 18:58

@Hadrian - Mourinho’s record includes his time with other clubs!!!

You really think he had 318 matches in charge of Chelsea in 2 1/2 years?! You remember Chelsea losing 37 times? LOL

  • 13 Black Caesar // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:01

Only a madman would even dare compare Keegan to Mourinho!!!

  • 14 mikeygd // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:04

If every fan was like Gordon, patient and backed the manager then slowly but surely newcastle would get better and better under Keegan,. He knows what we want and he can deliver it with time and money. You can’t expect the man to walk in with this group of players and turn things around instantly, il just be greatful if keegan can keep us up with this bunch and then does a nice clean out in the summer so we can all enjoy watching our team again.

  • 15 Gordon // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:07

    thanks mikeygd!

I think Keegan is also being punished because Sam got poor results in easy fixtures.

KK is now being hammered for getting poor results in very difficult fixtures!

How many managers expect to play Arsenal away twice, Man U at home and Villa away in 4 of their first 6 fixtures. Give him a break….!

  • 16 Jon // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:08

With Martins Newcastle will start getting chances again.

  • 17 Davies // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:09

We really do need a good clean out. In Ed’s poll for players to ditch, he’s only named 9. I think there are a few more that could go.

Unfortunately, we’ll just have to wait and see who they are….

I don’t think it would be fair to judge wor Kev before that happens though.

  • 18 CRAIGG // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:19

I dont think that mourinho could have done the job keegan did at newcastle first time round
mourinho has a wonderful record but their aint a prayer that he could of had the impact that KKs arrival and charisma had.
Also what was allardyce sacked for dull football playing for 1-0 just like mourinho did at chelsea so it shows the football knowledge of most of you people.
Next season well play great attacking football and the doubters will be saying how great kev is

  • 19 Tom_Toon // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:20

The only complaint i have about Kev although i wasnt to keen on him coming at all, is that he has no balls, hes too kind, he wont drop deadwood.

  • 20 mikeygd // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:23

Well said again Gordon, Fat sam had the easiest fixture list of all previous managers and still was awful away from home. The only reason we were high in the league was because of our home record against teams that we should be beating anyways. As soon as a team that cud score goals come to st james like pompy then it started to show wat crap sam had brought. Poor old Kev aint gna get much better with fixtures with blackburn and liverpool. Alot of fans expect him to go beat blackburn but we have to be realistic, blackburn are hard to beat and are a good side. I would settle for a draw here. Win would be great.

  • 21 Dragoner // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:55

congratulations ed, great stats from f****n ages ago! also, he has a good record because he RUNS AWAY when the going gets tough.

  • 22 Dragoner // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:59

anyone with half a brain sees straight through these stats. Why isn’t KK mentioned along with names like Ferguson, Wenger etc if his stats are only slightly worse than theirs? use your brains. stop with these pathetic illusions. fair enough these aren’t his players, but the guy has shown he has NO CLUE about tactics already. substitutions when the game is lost, poor team selection, LACK of motivation at half time. where are his qualities since he has returned?! find them PLEASE!

  • 23 Tom_Toon // Feb 25, 2008 at 19:59

Dragoner, as ive stated i did want him KK to come back, but i will support him (some people are not seeing me mention this), but with KK he already looks like hes abou to bottle and theres been barely any pressure on him.

I welcome his appointment even less now with absurd team selection (worse than Fat Sham’s) and the fact he has no balls to drop the deadwood.

  • 24 cooldj // Feb 25, 2008 at 20:03

    Leo I hate Nicky butt

hey hey. c’mon big guy. there’s always next time. no need to be so jelaous it’ll be alright. calm down ok? it’s fine.

  • 25 Dragoner // Feb 25, 2008 at 20:03

the fact is tom toon, people are not gonna jump on your back like they do with me because you are sugar coating your words, i mean that with no offence. The fact is some people on here are jus blind to what is clear in front of them it is embarrassing, selective viewing.

Craigg stop questioning peoples football knowledge. you are in no position to do so since everyone else apart from a selection of NUFC fans can see that KK is not the answer.

  • 26 Dragoner // Feb 25, 2008 at 20:04

and when i say everyone i mean pundits, other fans, other managers etc

  • 27 JJ // Feb 25, 2008 at 20:05

What good is it doing - saying get rid, or I’m so clever I didn’t believe he was the man.

Well KK is the Man! FACT.
He will be the Man for the Next 3.5 years. FACT.
He has one of the best records as stated. FACT

Those of you non-believers, then I believe you not to be Geordies.

Support the Man, Support the Toon.

  • 28 cooldj // Feb 25, 2008 at 20:06

tom toon @1959. spot on. i never wanted him and whereas i’d like to see him now have a fair crack I’m far from convinced though the team is sh1t.

  • 29 Dragoner // Feb 25, 2008 at 20:08

i also used to sugar coat my words when he first took over, but i cannot anymore, i have lost patience with the dumb decisions the club ALWAYS makes.

Look. BR IS a nice bloke, and was a good manager, but the reason he didn’t come to us earlier has FA to with loyalty. Let’s squash that myth. FF offered him 1 mil per year salary, and BR was getting more than that with Barca. There. I’ve said it. Nowt to do with ethics, it was all to do with cash!

  • 50 marcus owen // Feb 25, 2008 at 21:09

To KK, don’t just follow what SA had done.Try this 5-3-2,

    Smith
    Milner–Harper–Given–Duff
    N’Zogbia–Owen–Martin
    Butt–Faye

Of course, nobody will blame you when this team get defeated.

  • 51 Gloryhunter // Feb 25, 2008 at 21:12

Do the rules allow us to have Butt and Faye in goal?

  • 52 Gloryhunter // Feb 25, 2008 at 21:13

  • 53 cooldj // Feb 25, 2008 at 21:20

  • 56 steve // Feb 25, 2008 at 21:26

kinel - no wonder the press call us whining fans, prob due to people like dragoner, tom_toon and the like - it’s pathetic
wtf do you expect KK to do - inject talent in the bunch of crap we have, lets get behind him for the next 3.5 years next season will show wether he can still do it once he’s bought some decent players and sold off Sams 3rd choice players (Sams own words to describe his buys)

  • 57 Nick C // Feb 25, 2008 at 21:29

    ay don’t belieeeeve it!!!!!!!

  • 58 Tom_Toon // Feb 25, 2008 at 21:29

I expect KK to drop deadwood, not be so tactically inept and select a decent team.

    IM STILL SUPPORTING HIM!

  • 59 Nick C // Feb 25, 2008 at 21:31

Steve man. I want KK to turn us round, get us back up there again, but u gotta admit it’s looking a little bit like a pipe dream at present…

  • 60 cooldj // Feb 25, 2008 at 21:35

looks like city are going down against everton. what a great result for the toon.

  • 61 toonypot // Feb 25, 2008 at 21:54

Give KK a Chance he has taken a team thats morale was so low that the players dont believe in themselves. We need to buy some good central defenders and play as a team. We will stay up this season!!!!!! and then be top 6 next season .

  • 62 cooldj // Feb 25, 2008 at 21:54

hmmm looks like glory hunter drove everyone away.

  • 63 mikeygd // Feb 25, 2008 at 22:12

    well said steve ,
Some fans just wont be happy unless a manager comes in gets instant results and gets at least uefa cup football in his first season.
If we continue to build for the future and replace some of the shite for some pacey exciting players and maybe a few experienced players such as Dunne and Brown then we might have a shot at uefa next season and a decent cup run, which we should be greatful for considering the last two seasons. Then the seasons ahead things can only get better as long as we give him time, money and patience.
We’ve tried it the inpatient way calling for the managers head everytime a few results go against us and all it has done is made us go through so many managers, ruin so many careers and make newcastle united the joke of the prem. It’s not going to take 1 season to change everyones opinion of us because fans like craig dave and tom toon have ruined this club. Big changes r needed at NUFC and in the background alot of good work has been put in by allardyce and mort and no doubt keegan has his own ideas as well. I think we have hired some good professionals in the background who can help Kevin alot and all we need to do is just give it time!

  • 64 Tom_Toon // Feb 25, 2008 at 22:20

‘top 6 next season’, ahahah what a fkin joke. Top 10 next season would be a miracle.

i remember a couple weeks ago everyone on here was wondering where the points would come from KK’s first 7 or so fixtures, and most agreed that 4 points total from those would be about the BEST anyone could realistically hope for…now we’re in the middle of that stretch and those same people are grilling the manager.

    that’s really annoying.

  • 78 Ian // Feb 26, 2008 at 8:51

Keegan will be fine, we have played Arsenal twice and Man UTD we cannot expect to win, Liverpool will be difficult as the midfield and strikers are combining well and Torres is getting better all of the time, all we need is Martins back on the pitch playing Keegans type of football, if Owen can play off Martins then it may work well as you can always depend on Owen being at the right place at the right time, with Martins he will get the ball there, much like Rooney and Torres he doesnt have to be within ten yards out when he receives the ball, one player in Martins will change the whole team and how they work. Probably Sams biggest mistake was employing so many players in the African Nations cup, any old striker should have been bought for cover while Martins was away, Jason Roberts at £2.5m would have been sensible even if it was a short stay, all of these problems Keegan inherited, all we have to do is relax and wait for Martins return to give Keegan something positive to work from.

  • 79 phoonCK // Feb 26, 2008 at 9:32

mikeygd, Ian, Gordon, Craigg and many others who are more than ready to back the team, well said..
    THIS IS NOT FOR TRUE FANS OF NEWCASTLE;

Yes, I urge all fans(except true supporters of the club, cos you would already be getting behind the team through thick and thin) to stand by the team and King Kev. Just look at the fixtures he’s had and the situation around when he took over. Had Arsenal twice away at Emirates, had Man Utd twice with one at Old Trafford (never mind the Aston Villa inbetween the tough fixtures) , had 4 Africans away for ANC, had taken over a very very troubled Newcastle side that had been playing ‘Punt-It-Up-Then-Wait-And-See-And-Pray-We-Score’ type of football, had some very confused players on hand who were played on the wrong side of field many a time(such as Smith, N’Zogbia, Taylor, Rozehnal, Milner just to name a few) and had players who were biased against at and wrongly benched even with good performance from Allardyce’s time (Martins, Enrique, Emre, Rozehnal).

Certainly what Mike Ashley and Chris Mort are doing in the backroom can only be good for us; clearing the debts we had from the inept cheirman Shepherd, had some great additions to the staff and management side and had released the vision of theirs’ in years to come.

We’ve been in transitional-phase for far too many times without much success, and that was down to Mr Shepherd and his erratic management, and there was no improvement made in the off-field scene. But now everything’s different, we are really moving the right way, but it all TAKES TIME. If fans continue to bang hard on the club, blame everything and everyone at the club and be so negative through this difficult time, it will just do no help at all! UNDERSTAND?! GET IT INTO YOUR FOOKIN’ HEAD, IRRITATING BUNCH OF LOSERS!

I say, just get behind the team and showed them we care, and are supportive of them instead of being critical! Yes, King Kev might not be the best man to turn us around, but with just 6games into his reappointment, you guys are already writing him off! C’mon, don’t be morons. You jolly well know we are a club in deep trouble and problems after Sir Bobby’s era. SO FOOKIN’ WAKE UP AND STOP ASKING FOR INSTANT SUCCESS! We are just another normal club NOW fighting for survival, and MIKE MORTGAN are trying their very best to turn this around and lead us back to what we are in the past. Being negative and critical isn’t what the team really needs now. They need support, GIVE THEM YOURS!!

    Keeping the Faith

Well we kind of expected to get no points at Man Utd in fairness, but to conceede 11 goals, that doesn’t exactly instil confidence in anyone.

I’ll cheer anything I can, but there’s nothing to cheer about. Too many mistakes going on so I always feel like somehow we’re on the backfoot.

Not looking forward to Saturday, but I’m going to be entertained in the corporate facilities by Chris Mort amongst others, any messages I should give him?!

Mr T - we think Chris is doing just fine - it’s been on the playing side that things have been disastrous this season - and you can hardly blame Chris for that.
Just make sure you tell him to have Mike give Kevin the money in the summer - he’ll spend it well and wisely - we need more class players in the squad. :D

Ed - any chance you could give us KK’s win % for top-flight games?

I think a lot of those wins were against lower league opponents - I’m pretty sure his Premiership win % would be closer to the 40% mark and probably a truer reflection.

    Ed,
Keegan was removed from his job at the Toon back then (he did not resign) because he would not extend his existing contract that still had nearly a year to run.
