Alan Shearer has been talking about Newcastle United again, and thinks we can start turning the corner, now we have some of our strikers fit again.

Alan Shearer - too much quality for relegation dogfight
Alan started off by talking about Kevin Keegan today:
“For the first time this weekend he could have a full squad to pick from with his center-forwards - Owen, Viduka, Martins, (Alan) Smith, (Shola) Ameobi and the young lad coming through Andy Carroll,” “The strikers they have would trouble any defence. Mark Viduka has been a miss being injured and hopefully he will be back for Saturday and give them an extra dimension.”
“Michael needs chances,” “He needs players and everyone around to create them. At the moment they are not scoring goals and not creating chances which is disappointing but if they get everyone fit you’ll see them creating and Michael scoring.’
“I speak to him now and again but he doesn’t need anyone to tell him what to do. He’s been in this position before and he’ll be in it again after he’s been on a goal scoring run. That is the life of a center-forward.”
Shearer again shows great faith in Michael Owen returning to his goal scoring ways. Newcastle have not won in the league since December 15th, as most Newcastle fans know off by heart by now - but Shearer feels the Newcastle strikers can keep the club out of a relegation dogfight.
“I wouldn’t be worried about Newcastle going down, they’ve got too much quality for that,”“They are struggling for points at the moment but I think between now and the end of the season they will have enough to get themselves out of it.”
“If everyone sticks together, and there is no reason why they won’t, then they will be okay.”
We are a little more pragmatic and realistic and down to earth, than to say we will not go down before we have too much quality. Getting 3 points out of our last 10 league games isn’t showing too much quality. We can match that points score in a single game on Saturday.
We”ll have to buckle down to get this Newcastle ship turned around and the quicker the better for all concerned. Newcastle have faced plenty of criticism recently, which to us is deserved given their league position and results in the last couple of months.
Shearer added:
“It’s understandable because of their league position and they haven’t won for so many games.” “Players are just short on confidence - and confidence in football is such a huge thing.”
“They need a win from somewhere and when they get that win you’ll see a different team, I’m sure of it. Hopefully that win will come on Saturday against Blackburn. You won’t recognize them after a win.”
We’re getting a little tired of hearing we are playing bad because the players confidence is low. They are very well compensated professionals after all, and it’s up to the players to produce the goods whether they’ve won the last few games or not. That’s professionalism and what they are paid to do.
Maybe the club should hire a hypnotist and hypnotize the players that they are playing very well right now, and they will wipe the floor with Blackburn Rovers. Wonder if that’s allowed?
Well - whatever it takes.
Nothing would please the Newcastle faithful more than a good performance on Saturday by the lads and all 3 points. That would be just great. It’s been a long time.
Comments welcome.

I don’t think these guys realise what people like me/us would give to wear the Toon shirt! Never mind want to be paid for it.
I would go absoloutly mental if they were my team mates, playing like a bunch of muppets too scared of getting beat that they don’t even try to win.
I’m pretty sure most of us would sweat blood for the toon if we were playing for them!

8 Punk Skunk // Feb 27, 2008 at 21:30
Maybe we could get nastys step-mam over the tannoy at the game & if that doesn’t work…We could try hypnotizing the crowd into believing we played well anyway!?!..
9 mikeygd // Feb 27, 2008 at 21:37
too much talent to go down, lmao
I would rather have the middlesbrough squad than ours and thats saying something.
10 Nasty // Feb 27, 2008 at 21:39
LOL! Hypnotizing the crowd’s probably the easier option.
11 Punk Skunk // Feb 27, 2008 at 21:41

28 Gloryhunter // Feb 27, 2008 at 22:03
God. This is so immature. I think Shearer has said something really intelligent on this blog and all we do is –SNAP! What happened? Where am I? Why are my Y-fronts on back to front?
29 Punk Skunk // Feb 27, 2008 at 22:11
Aye y’right gloryhunter…But it’s given me the fear him saying the old: too good to go down malarky…People always say that about big teams in a hole…Oh ma god!..FEAR!..
30 Gloryhunter // Feb 27, 2008 at 22:19
Punk Skunk: I’ve just gotton over the last game. We were not good. I remember playing right back in a school ‘house’ game. I couldn’t run or tackle and was crap. Most of my team were a year younger than me. My mate was the captain. I told him to drop me for the next match and he did. For the third and final match he played me in midfield, and lo and behold, I was absolutely sh*te.
So it don’t matter how you shuffle yer cards ….
31 Punk Skunk // Feb 27, 2008 at 22:23
Lol!!!..Oh shit, it doesn’t bode well, does it?..
32 Gloryhunter // Feb 27, 2008 at 22:32
First time for weeks I’m positive about the next game. 3 days to go and 3 points in the bag. It’s gonna be great watching MOTD.
Whoops, she’s winding up the clock. Time to fill the hot water bottle, ooh, err, missus.

34 Punk Skunk // Feb 27, 2008 at 22:46
So, are ya’ all set for further dismal disappointment this week…It’s taking longer & longer to get over it week by week…Even my non-NUFC mates are leaving me alone about it now!..Sad!..
35 Punk Skunk // Feb 27, 2008 at 22:48
Hey ende, i’m sure i’ll get me shit back together for saturday!..

“Owen, Viduka, Martins, (Alan) Smith, (Shola) Ameobi and the young lad coming through Andy Carroll,”
why does it not have (michael) before owen obafemi before martins and same with dukes? strange bit of editing by them
42 briss // Feb 28, 2008 at 3:07
i was thinking the same thing Leo. Martins coming back into the side will make an impact and we’ll have some serious pace for the opposition to think about. Does anyone think that smith will start next match?
43 Nick Dryden // Feb 28, 2008 at 7:42
I think it is mind numbingly easy to change the
make up and complexity of the team based on all the evidence we’ve had to date.
OUT
Smith
Barton
Butt
Duff
Taylor / Faye
IN
Martins
Lua Lua
Emre
Enrique
Edgar
I love KK but in hindsight (a wonderful thing) and of course I still want his appointment to work out, however, maybe a Deschamps / Zola partnership could have been the way to go. I still feel we both miss, lack and need the qualities of a top foreign coach.
44 Ian // Feb 28, 2008 at 7:58
That is the exactly the reason why he is not the right person to be involved with managing Newcastle, he always mentions the players that he knows and likes, the ones he is chummy with get special mention, all through his commentary etc, even when he was captain it was difficult for him to say Bellamy was on fire, because he didnt really like him that much, I have been in management in the past and very succesful (not football) and you must mention the better players not the ones you like the best, otherwise you all end up in a crap working atmosphere where some people can do as they are like because they are mates with the boss. I like Alan Smith but I dont like him as a striker I like him in midfield, I hope Owen comes through for us, but for the highest wage in the club, the number one striker when Martins (before he re-negotiated his contract) Carrol and Ameobi together can be had for the same money, I am sorry but service or not he is a shocking waste of our budget and really we are looking for a change of fortune from Martins, Viduka or both, if Owen doesnt link well with them it is Owen who should be taken off, Shearer played well off Bellamy but once Bellamy was taken off we were much like we are with Owen now getting nowhere fast.
45 Cyprus Mag // Feb 28, 2008 at 8:27
The premier lge is full of teams who thought they were too good to go down. :0)
46 phoonCK // Feb 28, 2008 at 8:27
The best team i feel we could put right now for Sat against Blackburn:
——- Harper
Beye Faye Taylor Enrique
- Milner Emre N’Zogbia
——– Duff
—- Martins Owen
Bench: Forster, Cacapa, Geremi, Barton, Viduka
Geremi can come in and replace Milner if he stil can’t cross during match play. Cacapa will be there to add as cover for any injuries or out-of-form players in our backline. So will Geremi. Barton can come in as a replacement for the position of Emre, if he isn’t performing well, or either Duff or N’zogbia. If it doesnt work out for Duff in the hole, could move Emre up there and Barton in centre, or switch between N’zogbia and Duff if Barton was not to be used. Rotate as deem fit. And Viduka will be covering or either one, Martins or Owen, depending on their performance.
Of cos if they are all available.
Can be considered too: Kazenga, Tada, Tozer, Caroll. Really nice to have such quality in the team, but seriously, they just arent playing up to their potential and ability. Hope to see much better performance come Sat.
Keeping the Faith

the brackets were to inicate which were the cr@p strikers
48 Steeley // Feb 28, 2008 at 8:36
Ed, there are some interesting stories on the wires this morning about Roz wanting a permanent move to Lazio, and Viduka wanting out of Toon in the summer. Any chance of an update on those?
Also, has anyone else seen the story in the Shields Gazette about Keegan being disillusioned with the owners (i.e. not picking his own No 2, or being involved in Wise’s appointment) - not normally one to subscribe to this sort of rubbish, but the Shields Gazette doesnt normally spout any old crap about the club! Does it have new owners, or is there something behind this??
49 Steeley // Feb 28, 2008 at 8:41
Ian - are you being serious about liking Smith in midfield? You cant be….surely?! Have you ever SEEN any of the games where he’s been in midfield….he’s been atrocious!! Running round like a headless chicken slide tackling at every opportunity! He’s sh!te up front as well, so unless he suddenly finds a new niche as a brilliant defender then he needs to be shipped out pronto!!
50 ronaldeano // Feb 28, 2008 at 9:02
Ian, Smith is shit mate, and his haircut is shit also
He playes football like a schoolboy (clueless)
He flies into tackels like Ruddock
He tries to impress girls with his pathetic haircuts
He dosent score goals
All that said…
He is a clown and should be flogged.
51 Hadji // Feb 28, 2008 at 9:15
What do you guys think about Fernando Cavenaghi from Bordeaux.
I think he could do excellent for us,he could be lured to us for 8 mill pounds.
He’s a true goal scorring machine,a perfect replacement for Viduka.
As for Smith,i would replace him with Oscar Serrano from Racing Santander.I’ve seen him play in 4-5 occasions and this gus is so technically gifted and so agresive when attacking.
52 ronaldeano // Feb 28, 2008 at 9:36
There is a blog site Footballforum.co.uk that recons Newcastle are linked with Cavenaghi. He has a decent scoring record, i would love to see him at the toon

54 GP // Feb 28, 2008 at 10:21
Steeley - If Roz and Viduka want to f**k off then that’s fine. Both are very average.
55 Premiership Vids // Feb 28, 2008 at 10:32
Confidence within the squad is the only thing that is going to make things right. They are playing scared and without passion at the moment, the last 3 or 4 games looked as if we were playing without a midfield.
56 Bill F // Feb 28, 2008 at 10:47
We have been playing without a midfield, I half expect to see some of them come out with deckchairs and the Sunday Sport.
57 Leo* I HATE NICKY BUTT // Feb 28, 2008 at 11:03
well bill if they do you will see me run down from the sports bar with seat in hand ready to give them a piece of my mind (and my seat)
