Chris Hughton So Impressed with Andy Carroll

Tuesday March 4th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 11 Comments

New Newcastle United Assistant Manager Chris Hughton admits he was impressed with the play of two-goal striker Andy Carroll last night, as the Reserves beat Everton 3-0 at St. James Park in front of 848 fans.

Assistant manager Chris Hughton - impressed with 6′3″ Andy Carroll

Chris was at the game with Kevin Keegan, as they looked over a growing number of their young stars. But there was no doubt Andy was the star man again last night.

As we reported earlier, the England under-19 star now has six goals in just 5 games for Newcastle’s Reserves since returning from a loan spell at Preston North End in January.

Carroll gave Everton on loan defender Anthony Gardner, all he could handle last night. Anthony is on loan from Tottenham and Chris knows all about the center-back. But he was full of praise for the 6ft 3ins striker when he spoke to nufc.co.uk after the game.

“He’s given two big defenders the runaround all night and, even before he’d scored his goals, he’d had a very good game,”

“He’s taken his two goals extremely well and the challenge for him now is to keep on improving at the rate he has done.”

“If he keeps working hard in training and doing what he’s doing for the reserves then he could get his first-team chance.”

We’d really like him to be given a run out in the first team since he seems to be in the goals. When he came on against Manchester United 10 days ago, he set up a goal for Faye and looked threatening. His aerial presence was clear to see and it caused some concern in the Red Devils defense.

With our strikers right out of form at the moment, we don’t think it would be too much of a risk for Kevin to take.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Drop Owen and Smith and give Caroll and Martins a run out!!!

Thats what happens when you break the bank £17m for an overrated crock. He has to be picked every week. He should be fined and dropped for missing to easy goals at the weekend. He has done very little for the toon since he has been here. I certainly wouldnt renew his contract. Caroll and Martins are the future, play them!

he will shine if given the chance! i wouldnt be surprised if he was the player that carries us out of the relegation battle and keeps us up for next season…all he needs is one chance! c-mon Kev. let him loose agains LFC!!!

Owen will score next game if not let Carrol start the game after with Martins

I am with NUFC Yaka on this. Martins and Carroll seem dedicated to NUFC. Smith and Owen belong now to the gossip column of the SUN etc. If only KK could see that the future begins next match with Martins and Carroll.

Carroll has done enough to impress me. He’s looked bright, won every ball in the air and set up a goal in his only recent appearance. As much as I like Smith’s commitment he hasn’t done his job of scoring goals and creating chances. Give a young geordie a chance. You never know, we might have another Shearer/Gazza/Waddle/Beardsley. Here’s hoping!!

everyone loves carroll. either the press about him is wrong and he is a good lad or he is a wanker and people are just praising him in the hope that he comes good
