Newcastle United are reported by Sky Sports, to be looking at highly-rated Greek international Vasilis Torosidis.

Vasilis Torosidis - one of the best young players in Greece
Newcastle United dispatched one of their ever growing number of scouts to watch Olympiakos in action last weekend and it is thought that Torosidis was their primary target.
But of course Newcastle scouts will be watching players every weekend, as they track down players who will be brought to the club in the summer, just as long as we can stay in the Premier league.
The 22-year-old is an attacking right-back and rated as one of the best young players in Greece, having played extremely well for Olympiakos this season and he already has 10 caps for Greece to his name.
Vasilis is a 6′2″ wingback known for his exceptional physical strength and endurance and he has been an important part of the Greek national team and the Olympiakos team since joining the club.
Here is Vasilis’ playing record so far:
Years Club App Goals 2002-2006 Skoda Xanthi 76 3 2006- Olympiacos CFP 16 2 2007- Greece 10 0
There are a number of sides monitoring his progress and they include Juventus, AS Monaco, Glasgow Rangers and Athletico Madrid but so far Olympiakos is reluctant to part with such a good young player.
From his record he looks the part but we already have a well thought of 22 year old full back at the club in Jose Enrique. Vasilis however, operates on the right hand side as a full back or winger. We have no idea of his potential transfer fee.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

where do skysports find this crap? I should imagine all matters relating to recriutment is suspended untill we know which league we are playing in next season.
2 ronaldeano // Mar 4, 2008 at 12:31
Too right Broon, we should be concentrating on our final league position rather than even think about players we will sign in the summer. Once we are safe, THEN we should be looking at players that will fit into KK’s attacking style of football that i cant wait to watch next season!

Yeah we need a young right back and this lad looks promising

Disinformation and misinformation (not football) is the name of the game these days. Not to mention agent bullshit and manipulation.
I ignore what Sky Sports say now, also the Sun, the News of the World, the Mirror. It is all made up nonsense. If they are not trying to sell their newspapers they are trying to sell NUFC! He seems a good player though - but what about Beye? We need not mention Carr - he won’t be here.

@Broon and Ronaldeano:
Errr, we’re paying 3 people to go out and find us players that would fit into the team. These people have nothing to do with the playing side. They’re compiling lists by my reasoning. So considering thats there job, I doubt they’re gonna just stop because we’re nearly as rubbish as Sunderland!

Yeah, just cause we’re not safe yet doesn’t mean the scouts should just not work.
7 Elliott // Mar 4, 2008 at 13:08
Sounds ok to me, we do need another right back, it would be crazy to stop looking. How are Wise and Vetere gonna stop us being relegated?

I’ve seen this lad play a couple of times and he does catch the eye. To me he seems a typical overlapping right back. If this rumour’s true it looks like Keegan wants his full backs operating like Beresford used to back in the day. Don’t know how strong he is defensively though.

sounds like a sound investment, if he is as good as reports claim. would be nice to have capable attacking Wingbacks, on both sides of the field (one being Jose Enrique) as that is most certainly the style of KK!!!

the player is a good height too - something that we really lack
11 Tom_Toon // Mar 4, 2008 at 13:37
I really hope so, if you remeber i was mentioning this guy in the summer and january, he is very good to be fair.
12 Tom_Toon // Mar 4, 2008 at 13:38
Been saying his name since the summer, a very good player indeed.
13 Tom_Toon // Mar 4, 2008 at 13:42

well said Kash2. one way to ensure we are in this position AGAIN next year would be to not do any scouting until we’re safe…
16 HeronMag // Mar 4, 2008 at 16:14
Eric, I think your opinion of the media is spot on, but I think this story may have some weight behind it. As for Beye he can play at centre half or full back so they will still be a place for him. The greek lad is still a prospect so would probably not get in the first team straight away.
17 Tom_Toon // Mar 4, 2008 at 16:22
been mentioning torosidis since the summer, a very good player and HeronMag, if he arrives he’ll probably get into the first team straight away.
18 ende // Mar 4, 2008 at 16:22
Interesting, he could serve as cover for both Milner and Beye, and give the former the competition he needs to step up his game.
19 ende // Mar 4, 2008 at 18:18
If we pick this guy up, we should get some guy from Cyprus so Vasilis and Emre can fight over him.
20 Leo // Mar 4, 2008 at 18:21
sounds like a good player, just wish i could’ve seen him play before this so i could give a good imput into this. but if he is a good attacking wing back then it’ll be good that he can cover both milner and beye
21 Tom_Toon // Mar 4, 2008 at 18:41
i mentioned torosidis in the summer and said we should buy him, now we have some decent scouts so hopefully we will.
22 Nick C // Mar 4, 2008 at 21:08
I was told a couple of stories by a client of mine who is mates with someone who works for NUFC. He told me that Smith has had it written into his contract that he must play a certain percentages of matches if declared fit and secondly Barton had a head to head with Faye in which he threatened to”Fcuking kill ‘im”
You know what it’s like with chinese whispers, but the gentleman who divulged the info is no tittle tattler and it’s not exactly out of the realms of possibilty!
Comments welcome…..

We need someone so that carr can finally move to the championship. Hes no longer a good enough replacment for Beye but Beye is getting on too isn’t he. How old is Beye?
24 Tripp // Mar 5, 2008 at 4:36
I think he’s 29.
25 hanzemre // Mar 5, 2008 at 7:20
yeah sure Beye is becoming KK’s type of player & can play at least another season to 4 years top. Got to have a good backup though so in Vasilis Torosidis if he is that good, bring him in fast.
26 Leo // Mar 5, 2008 at 8:56
to be honest mate tom toon i cant recall you mention this greek guy…
27 Tom_Toon // Mar 5, 2008 at 13:02
check some of the transfer pages from the summer
28 leavy // Mar 5, 2008 at 21:20
its lovely that were going after “stars” and top class players
its a shame its in a position were perfectly fine in (rb)
we should be more concerned with other areas (cd midfield target man)
