On, off, and now on again - that’s the saga of the Lamine Diatta deal - but we are still pleased he has finally signed for the club.

Lamine Diatta - has signed only until the end of the season
After we expected the 6′ 0″ Senegalese International to sign earlier today, we were surprised to hear the deal had fallen through and Lamine would look into other options he still had available.
Apparently Kevin Keegan got sick of waiting for Lamine to make his mind up, and he called the deal off. That seems to have done the trick because Lamine has signed for the club, but only until the end of the season.
The offer from Newcastle United was for 9 months, through the end of this year, but Lamine has only agreed to sign until the end of the season.
That seems OK to us because if he’s any good, we can always offer him an extended deal for a year or so. But he will give Keegan some options at the back and by all reports he has looked good in training this week.
The deal had looked to have collapsed this morning after Diatta failed to agree terms during long negotiation that dragged on and on yesterday. But after a change in heart, Lamine will now play for a longer and possibly improved contract between now and the end of the season.
That’s a win-win situation because he will be trying to impress, to get a longer contract, and on the Newcastle side we have another much needed option for the back four through the end if the season.
However, Lamine will not be playing for a week or two as he still has to get match fit. We expect Keegan will arrange a friendly game or two to quicken Diatta’s progression to match fitness.
Bottom line - we’re pleased he’s eventually signed. We need all the help we can get at the back in our final league games.
Comments welcome.

Should give our players a bit of a boost. and YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, Asprilla 2 scores against the Spuds.

most players can look good in training, i just hope he can play in front of 53000.
does this send a message to taylor or what

DJ Alan Robson is as we speak, at the back of the Leazes End showing of Diatta to thousands of exstatic Geordies!!

Tom Toon - what about Farfan for NUFC in the summer??
7 Gloryhunter // Mar 6, 2008 at 20:55
Farfan Army? Farfan ‘Arf? Farfan the maddening crowd?
8 Tom_Toon // Mar 6, 2008 at 20:57
Nick C - I wish, its possible if we stay up, hes similar to Pandev but better IMO, his buyout clause is like 50mil euros or something i heard.
9 Gloryhunter // Mar 6, 2008 at 21:00
We need Everton to beat the mackems on Sunday
10 Hadji // Mar 6, 2008 at 21:11
Oscar Cardozo got sent off for elbowing Belenguer in the 8th min.
Tom Toon there’s no way that Farfan is better than Pandev.
But that’s your opinion and i respect that,i just wanted to make things clear.
11 GP // Mar 6, 2008 at 21:13
Farfan scores more than Pandev, but Farfan is not in a strong league. If it came down to it I’d rather have Pandev in my team.
12 Tom_Toon // Mar 6, 2008 at 21:16
Ye he isnt as proven but has more talent. Id rather have Farfan because i think hes better to watch and is a set piece specialist.
13 GP // Mar 6, 2008 at 21:22
To be honest either would be fine for me, but it looks like we’ve targeted Pandev and assuming we stay up we might just tempt him.
14 toonbully // Mar 6, 2008 at 21:38
Sounds like Diatta deal may be done . However he left Besiktas by mutual consent 5 months into a 2 yr contract . His Senegal manager said there was something not right with the player , and so he was not played hardly in the africa nations cup . Brummies didn’t need him . Kevin needs him badly what more can we say . A thirty two year old with committment flaws , speaks volumes for our world pulling power ! Even if he is teamed up with his mates Habib beye and others , he better shape up sharp or we are Coca Cola boooond !
Sorry guys , but I don’t see much hope at Liverpool maybe the next game ……..
15 marosh // Mar 6, 2008 at 22:00
What position does he play ? DC ?
16 GP // Mar 6, 2008 at 22:03
CB, aye.
17 Obafan // Mar 6, 2008 at 22:30
Good good good we need everybody to rescue our team from the drop. This is a sign that Taylor will be left out of the defence cause he is bad. I really hope he plays together with Cacapa (they know each other) and then Faye in front of those 2. I do not think he will start on Saturday.
Is there any clause in the contract that it will be possible to extend his contract if he plays very good???
18 CRAIGG // Mar 6, 2008 at 22:59
For gods sake Taylor has not played well for the last couple of months but i’ll tell you what the boy has been wonderful for the last two and a half seasons it just drives me mad why dont some of you go to some matches and watch our team then you get yourselves back on here and tell me that cacapa deserves a starting place.
I think Taylor needs a break, so play this Diatta guy with Faye until the end of the season but to say that Taylor should be sold is ridiculous.
The reason Brambles potential was never realised is the partners he was played alongside Dabizas, O’Brien, Steve Caldwell, Boumsong yet the fine form he showed alongside Woodgate and Craig Moore is forgotten.
We should get Taylor to play in a quality back 4 that will bring back his consistency and top form because the lad is a great talent who deserves more respect, if he played in this Team you would see a much superior player.
Given
Beye Taylor Dunne Bridge
Arshavin Carrick Gilberto Downing
Owen Martins
A side that can retain the ball and a midfield that can track back and provide proper cover for the back four.
And a partner at CB that will boss him and Talk to him about his positioning and sort the marking out a set pieces and also players that can utilise Taylors prowess at set pieces with fine delivery with the left foot of Downing and the Right foot of Carrick.
19 Tom_Toon // Mar 6, 2008 at 23:06
Have you seen Gilberto this season?!? I say this seriously, hes probably the worst player in the premiership on current form.
20 CRAIGG // Mar 6, 2008 at 23:11
I think that he would do well to have current form as he hardly plays anymore and i think thats a bit harsh on Carr, Smith or Barton as theyve been vying for the title of the premierships worst player all season
And my point was a team that covers the back 4 properly and can retain the ball
21 Tom_Toon // Mar 6, 2008 at 23:13
Yes but couldnt my suggestion of the young Alex Song who isnt overweight like Gilberto and can break forward + pass better. Isnt he a better suggestion, i think he is.
22 GP // Mar 6, 2008 at 23:14
Could we really get Song to Newcastle, though?
23 leavy // Mar 6, 2008 at 23:18
id love it if we signed ashravin just watched him play against marseille he was the best player on the park and he surel cant be that expensive
with the team hes playing for at the moment?
24 Tom_Toon // Mar 6, 2008 at 23:23
He doesnt get a game at Arsenal and wont with Flamini in his position.
i love it how many way people speall ARSHAVIN.
Ive seen:
Aravin
Ashravin
Ashvin
Ahsrin
Asheven
Arshaven
Ashraven
Ashivin
Asraven
Arshivin
and others.
25 GP // Mar 6, 2008 at 23:25
Fair point, I was actually thinking that after I made that post. With Fabregas and Flamini he doesn’t have much of a chance of first team football.
26 CRAIGG // Mar 6, 2008 at 23:33
Song would fit that team perfectly but im just saying we havent helped our centre backs much with our constant giving away the ball.
A lot of continental sides can play fantastic football in an oranised counter attacking side ala that what i watched about an hour ago from PSV was one of the finest away performances ive seen in ages, their soaking up of Spurs pressure and Counter attacking style and passing ability was awesome and a joy to watch.
I want to see great entertaining football at SJP again but we need to take the pressure off our back four, So two DMs who can retrieve and keep the ball and start off attacks would be my preference over the out and out attacking style of the first Keegan era and also under Bobby and instead of having to win 4-3 we could be Man Utd and Arsenal like and win comfortably 2-0.
So yes in response Song and Carrick would be nearly perfect Centre mid partnership.
27 CRAIGG // Mar 6, 2008 at 23:35
Tom_Toon i got his name right
ARSHAVIN
Any way the team wasnt my point my point was that a month ago the Banner was altered and 95% of the people agreed that was the team we should play how has taylor turned so bad in a month.
I was just saying in a proper ball retaining side and a quality solid back 4 he will be a top class England Defender.
28 Clive Rutter // Mar 6, 2008 at 23:38
I don’t rate Arshavin at all, it gets too itchy a couple of days after.

36 Leo // Mar 7, 2008 at 9:33
well its good that we signed him i guess, what a confusing saga.
yeah farfan is a player i would love to see at the toon, liked him since i first saw him play, cant remember when it was but you could see he was only going to get better.
still havent seen anything of pandev(full game wise) so i dont have any idea whether he would be better
37 Hadji // Mar 7, 2008 at 9:49
Leo…The only problem about Pandev is his stamina, you cant keep him more than 75 min,i mean you can but you wont get any results by doing so.

38 scott9 // Mar 7, 2008 at 10:18
farfan is another small striker even though he just plays off the striker there wouldnt be enough height up front in my opinion i think i would go for pandev
and i would love to see alexander song but i dont no if arsenal would sell as he is very young and they let diarra go i think he will be second choice to flamini next season these are the plyaers i would like to see im going by who weve been interested in.

Very good Scott. Lets sign “Top class cb”. Which club does he play for then?
Idiot.
If it was that easy to pick up players don’t you think somebody might have done it in the last 50yrs?
This is not a game of Championship Manager on a PC, it’s actual real life. The only way to challenge at the top is buy real class players. Unfortunately they cost a bomb.
The fact we can’t get out of our own half is the bloody problem. No untried second rate defender from Europe will solve that.
We should sign Henry and Drogba then we’d be in with a shout. That’s IF we don’t get relegated.
40 scott9 // Mar 7, 2008 at 12:33
actually michael what im tryin to say is that we need to do our research and buy a top class cb instead of buying shite like boumsong 8.5m bramble 6m there are top class cb out there we may need to pay over the odds and pay wages that are ridiculous but we need it sorted someone like sol cambell is what we need if we get a cb that cost 15m plus 90 grand a week then so be it even if hes only worth about 10m if he sorts our defence out then he will be worth it but i thnk everyone will agree on this site that we are able to attract better defenders then we have got at the club
41 scott9 // Mar 7, 2008 at 12:42
plus if u actually watched the game on saturday u would have seen that we hardly had the ball in our half as black burn were constantly on the back foot apart from about 2 chances they had and the other games we have played have been against man utd arenal who we are just not good enough to play against bolton 9keegan had only been incharge 2 days and borough we was robbed of the 3 points so saying we cant ge the ball our our own half is a ridiculous comment to make as we are creating chances but were just not putting them away
42 Dragoner // Mar 7, 2008 at 13:48
i agree with tom toon, gilberto has been awful this season, and was avergage last season.
farfan is good but i have seen him play terrible for PSV a few times this season, he doesn’t seem the most consistent performer. He was great yesterday though
43 CRAIGG // Mar 7, 2008 at 14:12
I would Sign Farfan in a minute but realistically:
Given/Harper
Beye/Ramage Taylor/Edgar Dunne or Campbell/Faye Bridge/Enrique
Arshavin/Milner Carrick/Butt Song/Emre Downing/N’Zogbia
Owen/Martins Ashton/Carroll
I think Bridge will Leave chelsea as he hardly plays and if we made a decent off for Dunne or Campbell their Clubs would sell as they are getting on a bit.
Arshavin would join us anytime and Carrick in my opinion will be available as Man Utd are buying Veloso, Song never plays and Arsenal have Diaby and Gilberto as cover in CM
Downing has signed a new contract but boro would take good money and maybe Shola in exchange as southgate is a fan(For some reason)
Ashton never plays at West ham as Cole in a 451 is Curbs choice he also favours Zamora and Bellamy.
Sell: Carr, Cacapa, Barton, Smith, Duff, Viduka, Ameobi and Geremi
The reason Ramage and Butt are still in the squad is because KK will keep them both.
N’Zogbia will stay if we perk up and show some class before the season ends (I hope)

sotoris ninis spread the word hes 17 tr old but is brilliant n would already come in to the first team he has a buy out clause of 15 mil euros which is more than any1 his age though he has suffered a burn out at panathinaikos and has had a few injuries he will be worth it cos he has potential to be as good as ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… KAKA
SO PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD AROUND TO FIND OUT MORE GO TO HIS WIKIPEDIA

CRAIGG- you are always defending Taylor. But why all of the sudden do you mention to release that Diatta guy at the end of the season. He hasn’t played a minute, so how can you really, in an honnest way, make your conclusion. I bet you would never say that of Taylor or Milner. Why not? Cause they are so called Geordies, isn’t it???? That is why I’m always typing that people need to start to look at the performances of the players not at their roots.
46 CRAIGG // Mar 7, 2008 at 21:07
Milners a leeds lad for the record and Taylor was born in london despite his upbringing in the north east and the reason i stick up for them is because they have been great since they started playing for us
They have had rough patches but they are 21-22 and they have shone a lot as well and have done a lot more for the club than the players that you stick up day after day.
