HT: Liverpool 2 Newcastle 0 - Storm Clouds Gathering

Saturday March 8th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 89 Comments

liverpool-fc_logo.pngnufc-logo.png

Newcastle are having the kind of bad luck that can still see them relegated as they conceded 2 goals in the last 3 minutes of the half to go down 2-0 at Anfield at the break.

Since we have been playing one up front in Owen with Smith helping out the midfield the tactics will need to change if we are to get anything out of this game, which to put it mildly looks unlikely at best.

Newcastle played quite well in holding Liverpool to 0-0 through most of the first half but then a completely fluke goal but Liverpool 1-0 ahead and gave them the first crucial goal.

The ball was on the right by the goal line and Enrique turned to boot the ball away but it hit Pennant and the ball looped over Harper into the goal. Pennant will be credited with the goal but he knew nothing about it.

Geremi had just some on for Milner, but that goal was exactly what Newcastle did not want to concede because, just like against Manchester United it could open the flood gates.

Just before the half as up another kick in the pants for Newcastle as Liverpool got another goal as that man Torres had the ball around the penalty area and he dispatched it into the net to amazingly put Liverpool 2-0 up.

It is not looking good for the Magpies and another loss now looks more than likely - but we’ll accept any miracles that may come our way in the second half.

Not only that but our goal difference keeps getting worse and right now it is a staggering -25 with only Derby having anything worse with a goal difference of -44. Yes - that’s the same team whose only win came against Newcastle and they took 4 points off us and yet they only have a points total for the season of 10.

When you look at it that way maybe we are favorites for the drop. What a complete and utter disaster that will be for the Geordie Nation.

As a relegation watch both Reading and Fulham are drawing their games 0-0 at the half.

If the hierarchy were worried about the chances of Newcastle’s survival before this game then if Newcastle fail to get anything out of this game there will be big black clouds over Tyneside.

It’s OK complaining about our luck, but this is the type of thing that happens to side’s who get relegated. For those of you who remember us getting relegated back in 1961 we had the same kind of luck then - although we didn’t have the stars we have today.

We don’t want to be too pessimistic but we also have to be realistic - a defeat today and we’re in big big trouble for the drop - that’s the reality.

The lads have played quite well but it’s obvious Liverpool are a much better team, and they only needed the break-through of that first goal - which they got with one the unluckiest goals we’ll ever concede.

Steven Gerrard has scored a 3rd for Liverpool after 51 minutes so our goal difference is now -26 and we think this game is now gone.

We need to try to keep the goals down though.

Comments welcome.

i hate smith and his agent, he surely has a clause saying he must play.

at 3-0 the game is lost, we should try using some young ones and obafemi too

  • 2 obamagic // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:13

GET OBA AND CARROLL IN!!!!!!!! and smith is just pure shit come on kevin open yr eyes fool!!!

  • 3 ObaFan2 // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:14

Got to admit it the players are letting every fan down… pathetic

If Smith has a must play clause (which I doubt tbh) it should be bought out and him strung up at tha Bigmarket Saturday night by his ………..

  • 4 Gilly // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:14

    make that 3 nil

  • 5 Momo // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:15

Cant Smith and Butt just say they are not helping the team at all. Its just ridiculous now that were 3-0 down

  • 6 Matt Lacey // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:15

Going in 2 down at half time was unlucky but conceding that 3rd goal so quickly is testament to the absolutely shite play that’s got us in the relegation fight in the first place.

    Useless, completely and totally useless

  • 7 Tripp // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:17

Wow, what a shitty finish to the half. And now we’re down 3-0. Reading are 0-0 with City. For all of the praises that Sven was getting early in the season, City are rubbish in the new year. I hope that they can get a win at madjeski (sp?). We really need a win last week, we have no luck in the league and can’t play with the top teams. That much is obvious. I just hope we can somehow stay up. It’s looking in doubt.

  • 8 Griff // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:17

torres and gerrard just walked through 3 of our defender again, coulda been 4-0

  • 9 obamagic // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:18

  • 13 geordieo // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:19

never expect in a million years were gonna get anything from this even before it kicked off, shud have sent the kids to play it or ask if we can concede or somit no faith till next game

  • 14 Leo // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:19

what the fk is he bringing duff off for martins, why not grow some balls and get off smith or butt

  • 15 Gilly // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:21

  • 18 shaunm // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:22

our team is shite, i wasnt expecting a win but everyone of our games is embarassing, were becoming a joke in the premiership

  • 19 ObaFan2 // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:22

Someone ask him why Smith is on from the start tbh!

  • 20 Leo // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:23

fk we r going down, mancity are getting beat by reading is the world against us

  • 21 Tripp // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:23

At this point we ought let Oba and Carrol on. We’re done today. Switch to 4-4-2, take smith off for carrol and take butt out and put Martins on. Then move geremi into the CDM role. Play a 4-1-2-1-2 with Carrol sitting in the hole behind Martins and Owen. Duff and Zog on the Wings.

Zog should never take another free kick or corner. He’s rubbish. Good Championship player, nothing more.

  • 22 Callum // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:24

Its official - We are Derby version 2

  • 23 Dave // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:25

What the heck is Smith on that pitch for he is hopeless

  • 24 Dragoner // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:25

reading 1 - 0, man city are shit

  • 25 Martins // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:25

I know Alan Smith is crap but dont make him the scape goat its the whole team that is a disgrace not just one player.

  • 26 toon1978 // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:26

Newcastle United are garbage, no flare, cant pass, cant score i have had enough of this rubbish 30 years support has come to an end with me finished with NUFC the club is full of false promise and lies. Newcastle are not a big club only fan wise and i have had enough, spent thousands of pounds over the years for the fat cats to spout garbage about silverware and Europe. The club is big lie sorry if i upset you toon fans but in reality we are not good enough for the PL and we have a squad full of mercinaries well i’m finished with the club good bye NUFC good luck in the future you need it.

  • 27 Obafan // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:26

    Our misery all started back in January;
    1. SA got the sack without a replacement being lined up
    2. KK is the new manager; I did not want him, but I also got carried away when he entered the stadium against Stoke.
    3. KK starts with 0-0 against a very poor Bolton
    4. Tough fixtures coming on, but we aren’t able to give 2 descent passes

    5. KK does his thing cause he is the Messiah, but in fact he is draggin us into relegation. All his memories are fading away; if you ask me now about KK; I will not answer with great manager for us, no I will say that is the tactical loser that got us into relegation battle.

    I HATE THAT SMITH, WHY OH WHY DO THEY LET HIM PLAY! I REALLY WONDER HOW THE OTHER PLAYERS FEEL AVBOUT THAT! IF NEXT WEEK HARPER IS SUSPENDED KK WILL PUT HIM BETWEEN THE POSTS. SO FRUSTRATING;

Now he brings on Oba, way too late you stupid pig. Then he will say Martins hasn’t got an impact so next game on the bench. KK you are a f*cking loser IMO. Go away and leave the club ASAP. You are erasing you fantastic past, but you are past!!!

  • 28 pete // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:27

    lol, reading are 1-0 up….sigh

  • 29 Tripp // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:27

City are worthless. All the people pointing to Sven earlier in the season ought to the kicked in the junk. If we lose any of our home games to Reading, Fulham, or Sunlun we’re probably done, unless we can replace with a shock away win somewhere. Next week at St Andrew’s is also a massive game, a draw there is the minimum result. We can’t loose to Brum. It sucks being in this position where every game is so massively important.

  • 30 Howie // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:27

down to 14th tonight. 15th next week. 16th few weeks later. then 17th. and then 18th after last game of season. RELEGATION

  • 31 ObaFan2 // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:28

Oba created his own chance… ul

  • 32 Leo // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:28

    we had a chance….

  • 33 Obafan // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:29

Thank god SA managed to get us 25 points otherwise we would be behind Derby. SA agains I called for his sack and now I’m sorry for it, really. Why? If you sack a manager you need to replace hioom by a better one and that is absolutely not the case.

First shot on target and it is Martins. KK will be pulling his hair now, cause maybe he needs him to start the game next week at Brum.

  • 34 obamagic // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:29

woo martins!!! i hope kevin sees that martins is better than smith

  • 35 boywatts // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:30

martins just hit the bar from 40 yards !!!!!!

  • 36 ObaFan2 // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:30

    omg unlucky again fgs………

  • 37 Obafan // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:31

KK that is why you need Oba in your team. Wake up you twat!

  • 38 obamagic // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:31

wtf dasfjk where the hell did tht one come from?????

  • 39 Griff // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:31

lol thas the happiest moment ive had watching newcastle for a long long time and it hit the bar….

    oh dear oh dear

  • 40 Dave // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:32

What a shot by Martins, that deserved to go in

  • 41 pete // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:32

lol, martins fancies himself a bit tday….cmon oba!!!!!

  • 42 ObaFan2 // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:32

Yep Oba should be starting next game…… if their is a God! lol

  • 43 ToonRich // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:33

Argee with Griff, we need to see more quick thinking like Oba just did…no luck, hitting the bar from that range!

  • 44 Obafan // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:33

The problem is Martins needs to play before Smith, but if they put Martins in the team they will let another player out just to give Smith jhis spot in the team. I think the only club where that is possible is NUFC. We are the joke of the EPL, let’s face it!

  • 45 Griff // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:33

    uh oh reading a winning

  • 46 Leo // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:33

4 goals in 20minutes come on the toon

  • 47 Tripp // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:34

I really doubt that we’d have been better off under SA. Look at the performances against DC and wigan. We were very lucky at Fulham. Brum was SA’s only decent game after Gooners. I think we’d be pretty much in the same spot either way.

I agree that the way the manager situation was handled was very poor, very ameteurish. We were doomed the day Roeder resigned, I suppose. MA and CM picked the wrong replacement, that’s on them. They clearly were a bunch of headless chickens that probably made an impulse decision that they knew would be popular. I don’t know who the right pick would have been. But we’ve got to stick with KK now, we really don’t have any choice.

  • 48 ToonRich // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:36

We’re so ineffective across the whole pitch…looking forward to a summer clearout!

Hey, least we’re actually getting in their half this week lol

  • 49 Obafan // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:38

Even the commentators are questioning the postions of the NUFC players. Owen in the middle of the park; he has never played there. Indeed you are abso right, but KK sees it his way guys.

  • 50 ObaFan2 // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:39

Ok L’pool have slowed their pace but we look so much better with Oba on.

  • 51 Obafan3 // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:40

    He is good.

  • 52 Obafan4 // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:41

    Yerp i agree

  • 53 Obafan // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:41

One positive thing, since Martins came on we started to hold the ball a bit more in our team. Martins if fit should always play upfront!!!!

  • 54 ToonRich // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:41

@Obafan…are you watching with english commentory? I’v got it in french!lol…

Liverpool may have slowed the pace, but we are actually winning balls in the middle now, which we weren’t whilst gerrard/torres were on.

  • 55 ObaFan2 // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:42

Yes English commentary for what it’s worth :(

  • 56 azvael // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:43

Harper is great!!!!! Another great performance by him today!!!!

  • 57 Obafan // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:43

It will be a very hard ending of the season this year. Glen Roeder had lots of critics but he always had a game plan. And he would never got us in such a mess. Indeed, like ?? said, the misery started after Roeder left the club.

  • 58 micepie // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:43

Can anyone doubt that we have to finish with stale and stagnant team selection and change things around from now on?! Martins has only been on a short while and already threatened two or three times, something which we know Smith would never have done (Smith says the right things but on the pitch provides very little).

Is Emre fit? Anyway, for God’s sake shake things up after this match!!!

  • 59 Obafan // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:45

ToonRich - indeed channel 1018 via Sopcast is English channel.

Harper was the best player for us today. Enough said!

  • 60 trojan // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:45

    great double save by harper

  • 61 Griff // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:45

i actually think harper is better than given he is more consitent and has a point to prove…

also… did anyone else lol when taylor took a riise thunderbolt in the stomach :D great block

  • 62 micepie // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:45

p.s - er….no! It’s utterly crazy to say Roeder was better, or BSA, a desperate thing to say!

  • 63 Griff // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:46

if i was playing a drinking game where i had to drink everytime alan smith passes the ball forwards id be dead from thirst.

  • 64 ToonRich // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:47

Enrique is starting to look more confident and fitter :)

The final ball is still lacking though, zog is another milner, just cant seem to pick a cross when it matters

  • 65 Leo // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:48

    1-1 fulham scores
we are going down i fear

  • 66 Jinal // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:48

I really think we should get relegated. Off load all the shite and money grabbing bastards in our team

  • 67 Griff // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:48

its ok we’ve got fulham, reading and birmingham to come. everything will look a lot healthier when we beat them…. :D

  • 68 Leo // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:49

    reading get another

shit why does this happen to us.

  • 69 azvael // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:49

At least this year We fight for something!!!! To survive the relegation.

  • 70 Lasse R // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:50

Now Fullham got a goal. That one point! LOL

  • 71 Callum // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:50

Griff - Our players have no fight in them so we wont beat them unlike the other relegation teams who are fighting for their lives to stay in the league - Our players on the other hand throw the towel in after they concede one goal and we usually let in a second a few minutes later and thats followed by a third and so on.

  • 72 Foxy // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:50

HARPER and MARTINS the only 2 NUFC players to stand out for us 2day

  • 73 Dave // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:51

Fulhams equalized and reading 2-0, looks like we are going down

  • 74 Obafan // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:51

Let’s ask the referees to give Smith and Butt yellow cards, then they get suspended for a couple of weeks.

  • 75 Leo // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:52

yeah that would be the only time i was grateful for the ref to book our players

  • 76 Dave // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:52

Foxy you forgot someone else, the fans they were brilliant again today

  • 77 Jinal // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:53

    LOL @ Obafan

  • 78 brad // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:53

    reading winning 2-0

  • 79 pete // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:54

is it me, or has smith got a very good tackle….he should be our main defensive midfield instead of butt….

  • 80 Obafan // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:54

Foxy - I can’t agree more than with what you just typed. But will it change something in the lineup, I don’t think so KK will keep playing his friend!

  • 81 Leo // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:54

anyone just see owens cheeky lil wink?

  • 82 pete // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:55

lol, him and gerrard are up to something!

  • 83 ToonKing // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:59

    thank god this is over…

  • 84 Obafan // Mar 8, 2008 at 16:59

Pete - you can’t be serious; they both are wastes of space, but they both get their spot in the team.

Tonight KK will again go eating and drinking with Smith and Butt and telling them not to be annoyed about their performance today.
KK: “Don’t worry boys, I’ve just received my game sheet for the Brum game and your names are already on it. The rest I will see this week in training. Or you both can tell me, cause this week will again be very busy for me with giving interviews for the press.”
Smith: “Okay Kev, but don’t put Martins in the team, cause he is better than me and then perhaps I might lose my spot.”
KK: “If Martins plays Alan I will drop someone else so you can play. Which position do you prefer to play against Brum?”
Smith: “Let me for once try as a central defender.”
KK: “No problem I will put Faye on the bench.”
Smith: “Thanks Kev, do you want another alcoholic drink?”

  • 85 Foxy // Mar 8, 2008 at 17:00

I think MARTINS should start ahead of SMITH every match the whole team seemed to come a bit more to life when MARTINS came on, he has a certain energy about him which gets the other players performing better (but still not good enough) =(

  • 86 Tripp // Mar 8, 2008 at 17:01

    groan…

  • 87 Obafan // Mar 8, 2008 at 17:03

Next week I will be on holiday with my students in Prague and Boedapest, so I can’t see the Brum game.
People here in Belgium are laughing with me every week when I say that I always look at the games of NUFC. They say that I’m ready to go to a madhouse ;-) .

  • 88 ToonKing // Mar 8, 2008 at 17:04

ok we had enough of KK, bring on the next trialist :D

  • 89 hanzemre // Mar 8, 2008 at 19:30

great game to be honest though we had lost it as expected…. by now KK must he can rey on Martins-Owen to score some goals to rescue us. Just need more pinpoint crosses & through balls hope Emre, Barton coud fit the bill.Butt surprisingly played better nowadays hmm. Duff i don’t what to say…Tayor still caught off guard.
