Worst Winless Run In Newcastle’s History

Monday March 10th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 44 Comments

We have to be very close when we say 3 points from 12 league games is one of the worst runs Newcastle have ever endured in their league history.

alan-smith-231.jpg

Alan Smith - why does this player start every game ??
A striker who hasn’t scored in 30 months.

The reality of relegation may be starting to settle in at Newcastle United, after our awful performance against Liverpool at the weekend for our 4th defeat in a row and 9th in 12 games.

So we’re not sure now is the time for Kevin to be talking how he will turn the club around in the summer and bring 5 top players in - since that’s all that’s needed, given our current squad is good.

How about saying we’ll beat Birmingham which is much more important right now.

We need to concentrate on getting some points. Reading have twice as many points in their last 2 games, than we have amassed in our last 12. That’s how bad things are.

If we win our next 4 league games - then yes, it will be an appropriate time to talk about new players, because we’ll be safe and in the Premier league next season. :D

But with one defeat after another, relegation becomes more and more like a reality, and that, unfortunately, is the truth. We wish it wasn’t. :(

We’ve lost 9 games out of our last 12, so we’re in a terrible and hopeless slump. Let’s not dance around this - this is one of the worst runs in the club’s history.

Until this team turns things around we think it’s just pie in the sky to talk about bringing good players to Newcastle in the summer.

Who would want to come to play in the Championship?

We don’t want to go down, but we are nothing if not realistic, and we have to realize the more defeats we string together, the more we will continue tumbling down the league.

At present we are 6th bottom, just 3 points above Bolton who are 3rd bottom, but they have a game in hand. If they win that game they’ll go above Newcastle on goal difference.

There are only 9 games left. If we continue to perform in those games as we have in the previous 9, we‘ll end up with 30 points and a goal difference of -48.

That’s because in our last 9 league games we’ve lost 7 and drawn 2, conceded 25 goals and scored just 3.

After Saturday’s game and probably for the first time this season we realized relegation was a real and distinct possibility.

It will remain so until this team can get a few wins together - and until then let’s not try to curry the fans favor with all the great things that are going to happen at the club in the future.

How many times do we keep hearing that?

Once bitten twice shy.

Cheers Ed, just had a shite day at work and now i’ve just read this. Bugger.

that picture captulates the story. we need to stop using the name of a player to justify his place in a starting line up. really all we need to see now is the players sticking together and winning some football matches to see us maintain our position in the greatest league in the world. and us as supporters need to continue to prove how good we are, compare the liverpools fans to ours the other night and all you could hear was the geordie barmy army singig loud and proud for all to hear.

we need to move that to our home matches also, because other than level 7 there is not a whole lot of sound going on at the park at the mo. i hate having to sing in my area of the ground because i am one of the only who do so, but doesnt mean i will stop singing

Smith should only be played in midfield and only if we cannot find a player from the reserves who is better, the really bad part about this which some fans seem to forget is Smith is better in midfield than players who were bought as top midfielders, really Smith shouldnt be bearing the brunt of this the crap midfielders who are supposed to be international superstars are rubbish, Emre mainly, Barton next then Duff, why we do not bring Gerami to a more central midfield position where he is better I do not know, he is creative and good in the centre, he doesnt move quick enough for the wing, Duff is best on the bench to replace either winger as he plays both sides when we need fresh legs that is where he could add value.

Alan Smith is a great player who has lost his form If we get behind the guy instead of sniping at him, I’m sure he’ll reach the great standards of a few years ago and score a lot of goals and pull NUFC clear. Kev will select him because he appreciates true class. Class is permanent. Form is temporary. Smudger will justify KK selecting him for every game until the end of the season.

  • 5 CRAIGG // Mar 10, 2008 at 19:51

Daiv i think we get youre point now…

  • 6 Leo // Mar 10, 2008 at 19:54

temporary… how long does that specify?

  • 7 daiv // Mar 10, 2008 at 19:57

    Leo
    For ever

  • 8 Leo // Mar 10, 2008 at 19:58

hahaha. are you kidding me? forever, i think thats perminant your mistaken with. what you say about smith, i hope your right and i will personally eat my previous words… with a big smile on my face

  • 9 ToonUSA // Mar 10, 2008 at 20:08

davi :-D man i a bit out of form too but me mom is always telling me i am class on the footy field so i should go and knock on KKs door eeehh…

  • 10 scott9 // Mar 10, 2008 at 20:09

we cant aford to play alan smith anymore he should be droped in my opinion this should be the team from now until they end of the season
    harper
    beye faye cacapa enrique
    milner barton geremi nzogbia
    owen martins

  • 11 scott9 // Mar 10, 2008 at 20:10

then again i dont now how good diatta is so he could be in cd instaed of someone else

  • 12 natedawg // Mar 10, 2008 at 20:40

cheer up we had nearly all our hardest fixtures in one big group and does anyone think we would playany better or get better results under big sam ? if in three games we stil here then yes we are in trouble. but for f–k sake we new this would be difficult and tight after the first man u game, and sounds likemost of you have given up already and exepting relegation! we will stay up, its in our hands and when we thrash birmingham and then fulham everyone will be shouting new we could do it . come on lads we aint down yet

  • 13 CRAIGG // Mar 10, 2008 at 20:42

Scott would you play Geremi if Emre was fit?

  • 14 There's only one united // Mar 10, 2008 at 20:50

It’s not just Smith. Owen is crap. Stop beating about the bush about form, class etc. He is a crap player who thinks only of himself. He talks about Newcastle like Ed uses the term ‘we’. He does not feel part of the toon. He remains aloof. He is crap. Despite his image, he is not a very nice bloke. And BTW, he is crap.

  • 15 scott9 // Mar 10, 2008 at 20:53

depends really crAIG I NO EMRE IS BETTER BUT HE CAN BE INCONSISTENT AT TIMES AND GEREMI WOULD GIVE MORE PROTECTION TO THE BACK FOUR AND I COULDNT SEE KEEGAN PLAYING BARTON AND EMRE TOGETHER EVEN TOUGH I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT AND HAVE NBEEN WAITING TO SEE IT FOR A WHILE NOW

  • 16 CJ // Mar 10, 2008 at 21:06

I still cannot believe people are banging on about giving Emre a game he has been here for 3 years now and has done very little and every transfer window his agent has come out and said he wants to leave but when nobody wants him he comes out and says he loves it at the club. Nobody want’s to sign him cos he is so inconsistent injury prone and no doubt will be on a lot of money.
Although i would say that is how bad are squad is when i would still rather have Emre in than Smith Geremi Butt and Barton.

  • 17 obafemiMartins // Mar 10, 2008 at 21:11

i am getting sick of all the stick from other fans, i think we will win at the brum monday and we will go on a great winning run, the team will be:
    Harper
    Beye Taylor Faye Enrique
    Milner Barton Emre Zog’s
    Martins Owen

  • 18 nightfall // Mar 10, 2008 at 21:13

sorry, but who ever thinks smith should play in midfield is an idiot..

  • 19 There's only one united // Mar 10, 2008 at 21:16

Owen overestimates his ability. Big mistake making him captain. No-one respects him. He will never again be in the top four. We will! Take the armband off him and give it to Emre - yes Emre - someone who will kick arse! He’s the only player with any vision

  • 20 Ashton // Mar 10, 2008 at 21:17

Andy Carroll scores again for the reserves ! this guy can’t stop scoring !

  • 21 There's only one united // Mar 10, 2008 at 21:18

Kev won’t play him in case Owen sulks

  • 22 There's only one united // Mar 10, 2008 at 21:21

I’d play Carrol, Fatso, and Shola up front and hoof the ball up to them at every opportunity. Forget about playing good football. It’s about trying to batter the opposition from now til the end of the season. Owen can look after the Lucozade.

  • 23 nightfall // Mar 10, 2008 at 21:28

    daiv - this is smith:
    -just runs after the ball
    -fouls eveyone with the ball
    -is a bully
-makes horrible tackles (fouls) and then talking trash to the ref, when everybody knows he should get a card…
    -he can’t score…hell he can’t even pass the ball…
-and this “player” starts every match and was also our captain…and then eveyone wonders what’s wrong with newcastle…

    but that’s not all…we also have barton…another great role-model…

and that’s also not everything…we also have more gifted players, who don’t cause any problems on and off the pitch, are professionals..who don’t play, ‘cos our manager and owner think smith&barton are world-class…

    well…isn’t this just fcuked up…

if the only way to get rid off smith and barton is to go down…i’m up for it!!!

  • 24 There's only one united // Mar 10, 2008 at 21:34

The thought of Smith, Barton and OWEN being here next season depresses me. There must be a Kilcline, Peacock or Albert out there waiting for a free. We need someone to take responsibility on the pitch and keep us up.

  • 25 ObaFan2 // Mar 10, 2008 at 21:53

Smith in midfield… thanks for the laugh…. oh you mean mid-field with the rest of the donkeys@ the farm!

Smith was good at Leeds when he could run at the defence and find the net, that was a long time ago now and he’s suffered a serious break and has never been the same player so far since.

Fergy’s no fool, he got rid at the right time for a laughable £6million!!!!!!

  • 26 daiv // Mar 10, 2008 at 22:28

    Team to play Brum
    Harper
    carr taylor capaca Enrique
    Milner geremi Butt Barton
    Owen Smith.
Got my doubts about Smith and Barton but cannot see KK dropping them so they are included.

  • 27 ScottyT // Mar 10, 2008 at 22:55

Leo youre first comment is exactly the same for me ive been saying it for a while now that our atmosphere at st james just isnt anywhere near as good as away games i go to and again i know where youre coming from about the singing in youre area .. its the same for me

about team selections etc why do people still have barton in there lineups he is absolutely feckin shite who cant pass the ball to save his life as well as being a thug! and also agree with people who say smith isnt good enough in midfield. his position is striker and he aint good enough there .. hes just as bad if not worse in midfield

  • 28 ScottyT // Mar 10, 2008 at 22:59

my team for brum would be:

    harper
    beye
    faye
edgar (give him a chance and taylor a rest)
    enrique
milner (if fit if not duff)
    emre (if fit)
    butt
    zog
    owen/carroll
    oba

subs: forster taylor geremi duff owen/carroll

  • 29 Ausgeordie // Mar 10, 2008 at 23:54

Daiv how can you say class is pemanent and form is temporary. 30 months without a goal. If thats a form slump I’m Alan Shearer. Thats a lack of class the Shola has never shown.

  • 30 m. // Mar 11, 2008 at 0:31

do you remember what was leeds’ attacking duo when they got relegated??

vodka and smudge!!! both are shit!

  • 31 lee // Mar 11, 2008 at 0:46

daiv ,,,,, smith is a moder day forest gump… nuff said

  • 32 lee // Mar 11, 2008 at 0:48

m… if you check viduka scored 20 goals that season…. maybe a little help from forest gump and they might of stayed up

  • 33 lee // Mar 11, 2008 at 0:49

    run forest run

  • 34 m. // Mar 11, 2008 at 0:51

lee - at this time, viduka could run

  • 35 richie // Mar 11, 2008 at 0:53

    team for brum:
    4-3-3

    harper

    geremi..taylor…faye…zog

    barton..butt…duff

    martins..owen..carrol

  • 36 lee // Mar 11, 2008 at 0:55

    m. i still wouldnt start with either of them… martins and owen….but our mid field must push up and support them instead ov sitting back waiting for them to do somthing special….. owen is lazy but hr gets in the right places. martins is quick and unpridictable

  • 37 m. // Mar 11, 2008 at 1:00

yeah, you’re right mate - martins is like “or I run, or I think”, but he’s quite better than smith or viduka

the midfield must play without nicky butt, before anything

  • 38 richie // Mar 11, 2008 at 1:02

have we a young centre midfielder in reserves who we can throw in,its bad in the middle

  • 39 Sandy McNair // Mar 11, 2008 at 8:16

    4-4-2

    harper*

    beye* - taylor* - faye* - enrique

    millner* (sub 60) - barton (asshole)* - butt* - zog (sub 60)

    martins* - owen (sub 60)

    carrol* (60)
    duff (60)
    geremi (60)

*denote players that are commted to the dog fight of (avoiding) relegation. I hoped Zog would be there too, but (after the shit attituded against liverpool) I actually think that my selection should be duff. committed, but lacking pace and penetration at the moment.

  • 40 Rich // Mar 11, 2008 at 10:14

Daiv that is a shocking team against Brum are u sam allardyce?? No creativity and no width! No oba = no goals!

  • 41 nightfall // Mar 11, 2008 at 11:15

    harper
    beye faye taylor enrique
    milner geremi n’zogbia duff
    martins carroll

subs: forster, cacapa, butt, emre, owen

  • 42 briss // Mar 11, 2008 at 15:56

I’ve given up all hope for smith I tried to think positive and think he’ll eventually start scoring but it wont happen. Someone break his leg again! I’m serious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So frustrated

  • 43 jane // Mar 12, 2008 at 12:23

    daiv - couldn’t agree more.
    with you all the way.
problem not beeing served. same goes for owen.
what about the midfielders, what about our defenders. get off Smiths back.

  • 44 nightfall // Mar 12, 2008 at 12:40

damn..you think smith’s got class, ‘cos he had 2 good seasons…6, 7 years ago…that’s class for you?? every player had at least 2 good seasons in his career…according to you everyone’s got class…so why do we even bother who should we sign…??
