Newcastle Still Keen On Russian Playmaker

There are reports that Newcastle United had a scout in Marseille last week to watch Russian captain and play-maker Andrei Arshevin score for Zenit St Petersburg.

Andrei Arshavin - would be a great acquisition for Newcastle

Newcastle have been interested in the Russian midfielder for a while now, and it was half expected they would have brought him to Tyneside in January, but that was put to an end when Newcastle Manager Sam Allardyce lost his job in early January.

The news that the Tynesdie club was represented at the UEFA Cup clash last week suggests that our interest in the player has not waned, despite the upheaval in the management structure in January with Kevin Keegan now in charge at the club.

Arshavin scored the late goal at the Stade Velodrome last week that took Zenit through to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup, and he starred again in the second leg this week when they overturned the 3-1 deficit to go through on the away goals rule.

Portsmouth, Arsenal, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Stuttgart and Liverpool were also represented at the game, but we don’t know if they were also interested in the Russian captain.

Of course this will all be pointless if Newcastle are relegated, and since we will not be in Europe next season it may still be difficult to attract such a good player to the club in the summer.

Andrei was born in May of 1981 in Saint Petersburg, (then called Leningrad), and is a top player for the Russian Premier League team Zenit St. Petersburg. He can play both as a midfielder and as a striker and has played 32 times for Russia scoring 9 goals, since making his debut on May 17, 2002 in a match against Belarus.

He has captained the Russian side in their quest for European qualification under manager Guus Hiddink. Arshavin has played for his club side Zenith 211 times and scored 45 goals since making his debut in 2000. Andrei is just short of 5′ 8” tall and is an attacking player in midfield or up front.

yes but cj we aint got no chance with nasri even if we was in europe.arshevin would be a great signing i think i would rather have mcgeady if i had to choose between the to though however it would be good if we could get both cant really see it happening though.

I cannot believe we are even talking about signings for next season. The focus of the club is totally wrong and tells me that we are in serious danger of relegation. I do not want to think about signings until we are safe andit is totally irresponsible of you Ed to flag up distractions like this nonsense.

Does anyone reckon some of these player’s mentioned if we had bid next season accepted for them and we don’t get relagated and finished 13-17 pos in the lge would even consider signing for us someone like Van Buyten from B Munich who knows he will be playing in the Champs lge next season i am fully confident if we stay up KK will get it right. I agree we have no chance in Nasri but i have read Cisse is desperate to get back playing in the prem lge.

ED, Is there no way you could set up some sort of petition from this site and send it to NUFC and put all our names as fans on it to try and get KK to realise how much we dislike Smith, Barton and Butt wearing the shirt and how these are the sort of players are who we want to this great club to be represented by:

Edgar, Lua Lua, Tozer, Kadar, Carroll, Baheng, Milner, Taylor, Ramage, Harper, Given, Faye, Beye, Emre, Martins, Forster, Godsmark, Zamblera and Donaldson

These players would form a side that gives a damn about this club and its future and would not give up after going a goal down at Wigan or would fold at home to Portsmouth, A side that puts their bodies on the line, takes a football in the face instead of ducking out of the way, A side that runs and closes down until they are totally drained of energy and Would if the worst happens go down with a fight not a pathetic uncaring whimper.

Craigg - this is in no way meant to be presumptuous - but I did write to Chris Mort to introduce the site in December - actually just before Sam was sacked.
Got a nice letter back and I understand the site is read by quite a few of the NUFC staff. I know that because that’s what the letter said, amongst other things.
My point is I think some of our comments and concerns are getting through - I’m convinced of that.
And in any case we created the site to advance the support of NUFC throughout the world - and I’m sure we’ll do that longer term.
But we really had had enough after Saturday and have ripped the players this week - not all of them mind you.
But we’ll be right behind them on Monday night - if the boys win 3-0 Monday they’ll get so much credit on here they will not believe it.
But if they play like faint hearted sheep again we’ll rip them - only because they deserve it.
I’ve realized we have abig advantage with this site - becasue we don;’t necessaroli have to be nice to Kevin so he’ll keep speaking to us - so we have more lattitiude for hoinest criticsm - but we also want to be fair and honest about it.
You’ll notice we’ve hardly criticized Kevin at all - because we don’t think that’s where the problem lies - in fact if we can stay up we expect one of the best summers for transfers into the club in recent memory - if only we can stay up.
There was a report yesterday that Roy Keane wanted Smith in the summer- but it seemed wishful thinking to us so we didn’t run that story.
So my bottom line is I think this site does communicate what the fans think - that’s why we really want fans to express their opinions on the Necastle news - as long as it’s done responsibly and with decent language so the bairns can keep coming to the site.

To Daiv who said we shouldn’t be focussing on the end of the season - isn’t that exactly where we’ve gone wrong in previous years? Waiting until the end of the season and then looking at signing players?
Shouldn’t we have them all persuaded, agreed and lined up the first day the window opens?
Bringing the likes of Owen and Solano in on the last day of the window is extremely dramatic but not very professional.
They should be lined up and ready - with loads of time for pre season training, team building etc.
OK - if we go down its all off but why should that stop you planning?
I’m sure Ashley didn’t get to where he is now without a bit of planning somewhere along the way.
More short sightedness is something we definitely dont need.

Sorry, it’s not that I don’t like Smith, I just think it’s madness to favour him over Martins. Best player in the squad for my money. I do hope Chris Mort shows this site to Keegan.
