Keegan - You Can’t Look Back - Only Forward

Saturday March 15th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 51 Comments

If it’s one thing you just have to admire about Kevin Keegan, it’s his honesty and positive attitude.

Kevin Keegan - ever positive attitude - you can’t look back, only forward

Yes, we know that’s two things - just testing. :D

Here’s what Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan had to say today, regarding our remaining 9 league games this season:

“You have to get to a point when you say, ‘Don’t look back - let’s look at nine games left.”

“There is Birmingham and Fulham, we have got Reading and Sunderland to come here and we know we have got to go to Spurs and Portsmouth. We have got Chelsea to come here as well.”

“They are the games to focus on. The ones that have gone, disappointing as they have been, are confined to history now.”

“We can only affect what is coming.”

Kevin Keegan still thinks his first win is all it takes to turn the tide, and start to clear the gloom and doom, and storm clouds gathering over the Tyneside club.

But there’s very good reason for that gloom and doom – 3 points from the last 36 points played for. That’s the worst winless run ever by Newcastle United in the Premier league.

We can double that points tally on Monday night, with a win at Birmingham.

Keegan continued:

“If you get a win, you get a smile on the players’ faces when they come in, and not this feeling of ‘Oh, not again’ and of them feeling sorry for themselves.”

“Results make football clubs. You win a game and everything is okay.”

“You build them up after losing, sometimes unluckily, but it is pretty tough on them.”

With three teams beneath us all losing today by a single goal, Monday night would be a great time for the team to register their first win under Kevin Keegan, since he rejoined Newcastle in mid-January.

That will definitely lift our Geordie spirits :D

Comments welcome.

I don’t think we will win on monday night but I would like to think we will.

  • 2 richie // Mar 15, 2008 at 20:40

im looking forward to the game, barton has to play well

  • 3 Leo // Mar 15, 2008 at 20:43

and now chelsea are possibly going to be challenging for the top spot so that game will be very hard…

  • 4 Tippo // Mar 15, 2008 at 21:16

Good results today for Newcastle as the three teams below them on the ladder lost. But the Monday match is a must win match but I hope the pressure does not get to the players.

  • 5 ToonKing // Mar 15, 2008 at 22:30

oh man tomorrow will be murder, we have to go out ready to kill and get full throttle from the first minute and never look back. If we give the brummies time and space to play they will score and beat us. Now is the time to shine, tomorrow is like a cup final for us.
    I can’t fookin’ wait !!!!!!

    HOWAY!!!!

  • 6 Tom_Toon // Mar 15, 2008 at 22:41

    You mean Monday.

  • 7 daiv // Mar 15, 2008 at 23:16

Before we get too carried away, lets see whether SMITH starts because if KK picks him as a goalscorer, our chances of winning decrease by 50%

  • 8 ToonKing // Mar 15, 2008 at 23:25

    it’s all ready Sunday here :D 1:30 Am now 00:30 when i wrote the post :D .

  • 9 theflyingfullback // Mar 15, 2008 at 23:26

God help us! I’d gladly take a draw from Monday’s game. If we can do that and then beat Fulham we’ll invariably be fine, otherwise we’re looking buggered!

  • 10 Dragoner // Mar 15, 2008 at 23:43

i hope we give a performance like we did at SJP against arsenal

  • 11 Tom_Toon // Mar 15, 2008 at 23:44

ToonKing where are you? Im assuming eastern europe/western asia?

  • 12 richie // Mar 15, 2008 at 23:46

wats the thoughts onthe starting line up for mon..??

  • 13 Dragoner // Mar 15, 2008 at 23:51

    ———–Harper————–
    Beye—Faye—Diatta—Jose
    Milner—–Barton——Duff
    Smith——Viduka—Martins

i would like to see diatta play alongside faye as they play together internationally, and smith because he can be good in matches where we need to really fight for everything e.g. arsenal

If by 60th minute he is still playing shite, sub him for zoggy or owen

  • 14 Tom_Toon // Mar 15, 2008 at 23:52

take the 6 off that Dragoner ;)

  • 15 Dragoner // Mar 15, 2008 at 23:52

i also want kk to be in an active mood, no more of this ‘lets wait until the game is dead before we make a sub’ shite

  • 16 Dragoner // Mar 15, 2008 at 23:52

    lol @ tom

  • 17 Tom_Toon // Mar 15, 2008 at 23:55

I want this line-up, but it wont happen:

    Harper
    Beye Faye Kadar Enrique
    Troisi Lualua Barton N’Zogbia
    Martins Carroll

  • 18 Dragoner // Mar 15, 2008 at 23:59

im unsure about carroll and kadar at senior level that is why i did not put them up.

Emre has made a lot of effort when he has played, and if he is fit i think him and barton may actually work in the middlle, i say this despite being very against this at the beginning of the season.

if we got kk we might aswell be very attacking, forget butt, he is a player that should only come in in the last half an hour of the game to break up the oppositions play

  • 19 richie // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:01

dragoner i say kk will prob go wit similar line up..agree wit tomtooon tho would love to see young players introduced

  • 20 richie // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:03

off the point but that young irish midfielder i menioned before owen garven scored for ipswich today..worth a look in summer

  • 21 Dragoner // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:05

did anyone else read that article about our head scout getting sacked, and they gonna bring some new foreign scout in? that is the best news i have heard in ages, our scouts have never been good enough

  • 22 richie // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:14

thats good news, we need to stop making poor signings and get the proper value for the $$$$$$$$$$$$ were spending

  • 23 Tom_Toon // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:18

    chermiti, nuff said.

  • 24 Dragoner // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:23

tom toon did u see vicente sanchez in the copa america, he was really good, much better than duff for us, i only just found out yestrday wen i watched schalke v duisberg he now plays for schalke, i think they got him for free aswell, why arent we taking these great opportunites?! pissing me off!

  • 25 richie // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:23

haven seen enough of him,,who would he compare to..

  • 26 Leo // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:25

chermiti… there is no proof that he could hack the premiership…

i am glad we are getting rid of the scouting people from the past, because they have made some shocking signings.

  • 27 Tom_Toon // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:26

ye they did, id prefer someone youger though.
    I really like Yuri Zhirkov.

  • 28 Tom_Toon // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:27

Leo, no proof anyone outside of the premiership can.

  • 29 Leo // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:28

do you think we would get him? or do you just like him as a player?

  • 30 Tom_Toon // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:30

I dunno, i like him as a player because for me i want players to be very agressive (not malicious like Barton) and have a grea touch, Chermiti has both of these.

  • 31 Dragoner // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:31

i dont think we got a chance of gettin zhirkov though, as soon as we show interest, someone like man city etc will join the race and we will lose. I think we could maybe sneak pander from schalke though, if we offered a decent amount he would be a good first teamer and jose could be back up

  • 32 Leo // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:32

yeah i like players like that. if our players had a bit of aggression about them we wouldnt be stuck in the mess we are in now.

that the way i play football. maybe not the most skillful but im much quicker than everyone and have aggression, so if anyone megs me (which happens often) they dont get far. haha

  • 33 Tom_Toon // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:33

no way jose, literally. Pander is a liability defensively, great cross n free kick but our defence is frail enough.

  • 34 Dragoner // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:34

although schalke players will probably be hard to get now because of how well they have done in the CL, damn! we should have signed players like pander, biglia, sanchez in the summer, we probably could have got two out of three of them

  • 35 richie // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:35

we need a midfield general to build around,,,if man utd spend big on a couple of cm, id bid for carrick,,wheter it can happen is a different story

  • 36 Dragoner // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:36

exactly why i want him tom toon, i think you need at least two rb and two lb, one predominately defensive, and the other more attacking, jose seems more defensively capable to me

  • 37 richie // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:37

centre defense matthew kilgallon, dawson from spurs perhaps

  • 38 Dragoner // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:41

problem with dawson is he is awful when paired with a centre back who isnt english, when he is at the back with king, or even huddlestone he is one of the best, but with zokora, or kaboul he is terrible

  • 39 richie // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:45

him and taylor, could b a coup

  • 40 Tom_Toon // Mar 16, 2008 at 0:51

Taylor is shocking, when will people realise this!?!

  • 41 ScottyT // Mar 16, 2008 at 2:17

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2008/03/16/sfntac116.xml

eventually a sensible media article on us that i totally agree with

  • 42 AdamCF // Mar 16, 2008 at 4:19

Tom.. Have u heard of the Russian Rudi Zarsoff.. he’s meant to be good.

  • 43 AdamCF // Mar 16, 2008 at 4:20

Taylor’s a great young player that shouldn’t be in the position he’s in. He’s busted his arse as a centre back when really there should be more experienced players in that possie before him.

  • 44 ObaFan2 // Mar 16, 2008 at 5:28

    ScottyT, interesting article.

Watching the GP and Hamilton’s doing ok :)

Watching the Aussie GP and Hamilton’s doing ok :)

  • 46 ObaFan2 // Mar 16, 2008 at 5:29

    oops

  • 47 richie // Mar 16, 2008 at 8:37

re: that article scotty….im sick to death with people critiscising owen, yes he has lost some pace but he is stronger and a better finsher with age,,,eto wouldn score in our side the way we are playing,,

its hilarious that people doubt owen he is a proven goalscorer and just requires a midfield that can provide him service .

IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT

no doubt if we movehim on hel b firing goals in for a team that provide passes and crosses

KEEP OWEN AND SAVE THE CRITICISM

  • 48 phoonCK // Mar 16, 2008 at 9:20

well, how abt this line-up dudes (if Emre and Milner aren’t going to make it due to injuries):

‘4-4-2 with attacking mid cum 4-3-3′

    Harper
    Beye Cacapa(Diatta) Faye Enrique
    Geremi(LuaLua) Barton N’Zogbia
    Duff
    Martins Owen

Subs: Forster, Diatta(Cacapa), LuaLua(Geremi), Butt, Viduka(Smith/Carroll if Viduka unfit)

Harper stands in goal, who else. Replace Taylor with either Cacapa or Diatta. Taylor for me has to be given a rest, he’s just off-form at the moment. Geremi has a good cross in him, so i’ll like to use him, more inside right than wide right. Barton to be the box-to-box midfield general, and i hope he can rediscover his form. N’Zogbia will be on the inside left, also has a good cross in him, but we need him to turn up for matches. Duff will play behind the front two, Martins and Owen. Duff can change to forward right if we are going to attack more, turning it to 4-3-3..

    Keep the Faith

i dont agree with you about Owen richie, i think he is living off of some good form, other strikers dont get excuses, so owen shouldnt either, anelka was playing in a terrible bolton side, yet still scored goal after goal, no excuses, he is not good enough

  • 50 Egar // Mar 16, 2008 at 17:47

Dragoner, that’s almost like saying Thierry Henry is over the hill at Barcelona, which I very much doubt. To get the best out of a player, he’s got to be played in his best position. This is where Henry’s problem is at Barcelona though not Owen’s at Newcastle.

Owen’s scoring ability thrives on having the right partner/foil as he did alongside Heskey during his Liverpool years right up to the Euro games at Wembley for England against Isreal and Russia last year.

Each player has his own strength/weakness and is likely to produce the goods when used correctly and vice versa.

  • 51 Egar // Mar 16, 2008 at 18:03

Keegan & Toshack, Dalglish & Rush, Shearer & Sutton are some examples of great strike partnerships. Owen & Smith??? Unlikely. Owen & Martin??? Maybe, like Rooney & Travez.
