One of the things that has alarmed us a little over the last several weeks is Kevin Keegan’s team selection.

Kevin Keegan - what line up will he come up with?
As we’ve said before Kevin seems to pick the players with the big names, which is independent of how they are performing at the club.
Thats one thing we accused Big Sam of, but his team selections were often weird - playing Milner and N’Zogbia together on the wings only a few times, but even then playing Milner on the left and Charles on the right. Charles is left footed and James had to swing in his crosses with his right foot so had to stop to do that, and the opposing full backs knew that.
That may remain one of the biggest mysteries of Sam’s reign - what was he thinking.
But the team tomorrow will be interesting. Let’s assume Viduka is fit to start, and we know James Milner isn’t available for at least the next couple of weeks.
This is the side we’d like to see put out for tomorrow:
Harper
Beye Faye Taylor Enrique
Duff Geremi Barton N’Zogbia
Owen (c) Martins
Subs: Forster Cacapa Diatta Viduka Butt
We would have liked to start Viduka but to us Martins must start and Owen too, because he can get a goal for us at any time, and hopefully he will start producing for us soon.
Again we cannot find a place for Smith, even on the bench, unless we want to leave Cacapa out, since we think Diatta must be a sub, so he can perhaps get a short run-out to ease him into the action.
We’d like to see Geremi given a chance in the defensive midfield position. He can play well there, and we wouldn’t even mind if Smith got a shot at that position either, but not as a striker.
However, we don’t think Kevin will pick that team - this is the team we think Keegan will pick.
Harper
Beye Faye Taylor Enrique
Duff Butt Barton N’Zogbia
Owen (c) Smith
Subs: Forster Geremi Diatta Viduka Martins
It will greatly disappoint us if Kevin starts Owen and Smith up front again, but that’s what we expect.
Kevin has some selection dilemmas however, because if he wants Geremi on the bench he may have to drop Cacapa, but that’s also assuming Diatta will be on the bench. There’s also no room for young Andy Carroll unfortunately.
Comments and your teams for tomorrow night are very welcome.

Up to KK whether he picks an XI that will fight and win or chooses a P45 along with his Summer unemployed losers. So what is wrong with Harper, Beye, Diatta, acapa, Enrique, Geremi, Faye, NZogbia, Duff, Martins, Carroll. Will not be picked with Martins lucky to play. What has he got against Martins when he was such a fan of Tino?

i want this team, dispite the fact i dont particularly like butt barton or smith
harper
beye faye diatta enrique
duff butt barton nzogbia
owen smith
i would be elated though is smith was not in there, because he isnt good enough, ideally i would have viduka there, or maybe even martins because either have their positives, but im sure smith will be in there, because this so called contract insert…
maybe craigg is write that keegan is only playing smith because martins and viduka arnt fit
i hope so and i hope maybe tomorrow they are fully fit

I have fear Smith will be there alongside MO, after his seeming ‘vote of confidene’ FOR smith.
I also do not see KK playing ANOTHER radically different squad from his normal.
We know and hope he does.
On the lads (for us lot who care like religion)

martins has to play defenders just dont now what hes gonna do he can come up with something out of nothing in my opinion he is one of the most talented players in the premier league he is special he has a special talent something that ordinary players dont have he needs to play he could save us from relagation

If Smith has got that clause , it has to be the daftest thing ive heard for a long time .Who would sign an average player and have a must play clause .I dont even mind the team Ed thinks We,ll play apart from Smith as a Striker. We may aswell field 10 players for all the good he,s been doing.

i am getting sick to see Martins waste time on the bench again. In fact,i am wondering who’s the one to decide the start line up every march?!Is that Dennis Wise…?!@Gods know!
Anyway, wish my choice as under can be appear in monday night
Harper
Beye Taylor/faye Cacapa Jose
Geremi Barton Butt Duff
Martins Owen/Viduka
The selection between taylor and faye coz they are the same style of defender which will cause our defensive speed.
And Owen absoultely lack of heart play for magpies, but i don’t think KK will drop him down
10 Sturla // Mar 16, 2008 at 13:18
I pretty much agree with you on both your team selection and the team Keegan will put out. Of course it is easy for us fans to criticize the selection when things are going bad, but there is nothing that says that fans selection would to better. It might be the same or worse. Then we’d be complaining that Keegan should be consistent in his team selection. If Smith would be left out we would complain that the fighting spirit was missing with Smith out. The thing is we’ll always complain when things are going bad.
11 Hen // Mar 16, 2008 at 13:25
I think Butt and Barton would make an adequate pairing in the middle IF Barton played to his old standards. Frankly we don’t see the training ground and I did rate the Barton of old, just taking his time to get back in to it after the injuries and his “new years holiday”.If not then Zog in the middle and Lua Lua on the right, we need attacking options in the centre of midfield and Geremi/Butt/Smith don’t cut it.
KK cannot play Smith and Owen up front again, not now Martins and Viduka are fit. It wasn’t working end of story.

i concur with most people. I reckonkk will pick this team;
Harper
Beye taylor faye enrique
Duff butt barton nzog
Duke Owen
However, it will be very interesting to see if smith is involved in the starting 11. My team would be a little different;
Harper
Beye diatta faye enrique
Duff geremi barton Nzog
Duke Owen
Diatta beye and faye have just played six good games with each other at the ACN so i reckon they could be pretty solid.
Iv picked geremi over butt cos butt does my head in with his shit passing, regardless of his tackling and work rate.
And i would prob start with Duke and owen, and bring martins on for Duke, who will undoubtably get tired!

Tony Cairns 100% agree about Geremi and people saying they want him in the team. He has not had 1 half decent game for us and has been a complete joke when he has played he has looked uninterested just like Duff instead of going looking for the ball he hides from the ball and when he recieves the ball he does not know what to do with it and rushes his passes always losing possesion i would rather have Smith or Barton or Butt or Emre in CM than Geremi i would be happy if he never kicked a ball again for us.

Dragoner,
KK will pick Smith somewhere. Probably as a striker. In that case we deserve to get relegated because KKs team selections are peverse. Its no good saying we have players to get us out of trouble (Martins Viduka Lua Lua) if we KK keeps picking old farts like Smith and Butt. If he picks Smith again, it means that the guy has lost the plot. Bonkers. Hell bent on doing it his own way into oblivion…Championship. He does not want to be shown to be wrong, so he’ll keep picking Smith until he scores a goal and say “see, Smith is golddust.” 1 on 0 goals in 38 games is not really golddust. I’d back myself to score 1 goal a season even if it went in off my backside.

Let Wigan win. They’re already ahead of us in the table and the way we’re playing we really need somebody else to suck as badly as we do. Fulham has just shutout everton (WTF happened to the Toffees today?) so they’re catching up. Makes the Fulham game that much more crucial.

49 Tripp // Mar 16, 2008 at 17:13
A win at brum would be massive. We just need points. The way Reading are playing those 3 points are anything but automatic. We need every win we can get, because we’re bound to cock something up, or somebody else gets a surprise win (like Fulham did today). So in that sense, Habib Beye was right. 9 cup finals until the end of the season.
50 toonfan1 // Mar 16, 2008 at 17:13

If we win against brum tomorrow, we are 5 clear of them and 6 clear of bolton and we could win, we are due a win after all. Its great that Wigan have won, gives us a bit more freedom knowing we are still 3 clears of bolton and have fulham, reading and sunderland all to play at home. I think we need a huge performance tomorrow and make sure we dont lose. thats the first priority.

If KK picks Butt Barton and Smith I will not be happy and recommend the manager consults a psychiatrist. Bonkers. One of them OK, but all three? All three proves the manager cannot see the wood for the trees and is determined to field the worst team he can without making it look obvious that he is on the Mackem payroll.

A message that’s totally off the subject, and from a rather dubious source (tribalfootball.com), but however, Barcelona are reputedly looking to offload Giovanni Dos Santos for 7 million in the summer, do you guys think we should be interested in him?
56 Obafan // Mar 16, 2008 at 17:57
If he puts Martins on the bench, they can sack him immediately even before the game. We need Oba and he will once again pick Smith. Can’t they see that he is a waste of space. I really don’t know how they don’t see that. Managers get overpaid (same for players) and they need to pick the best team. KK has NEVER in the previous games picked his best formation available. For that I really doubt at his mangerial skills.
KK has got his favourites and those will bring us down. Like the story of the Spanish manager; every manager would do better than KK has done.
Hope for a win. I’m in Prague tomorrow so I will follow via mobile phone.

Dos Santos for £7M? I’m not so sure that’d happen, he’s still young so why wouldn’t Barcelona want to keep him on for a little bit longer to see if he can make it in their team?
62 Michael // Mar 16, 2008 at 18:25
I must need a new prescription as my eyes mislead me.
This is the revered messiah about whom you write, surely
he is very competent he needs not deploy any tactics.
All of you think he knows football after all look what he did in the 90’s, yes?
You suddenly have the audacity to tell Kev who to pick? If he is so master minded as you claim then you should be in support of his choices, he knows best not you. So if smith starts and Oba is on the bench then Keegan has a master plan after all this is KING KEV Always your KING.

Unknown to the media and apparently unknown to his teammates. And apparently now there are question marks over his career and apparently they want to operate immediately despite Keegan’s wishes. Apparently though there are real, serious question marks over his career. But like I said it’s not the most reliable source so I wouldn’t take that much from it..yet. I hope he’s wrong.

I’ve always preferred at least one striker in the box to be strong in the air so would have to be either Carroll or Fat Duka partnering a pacey striker like Owen or Martins.

Owen Viduka
Sub: Forster, Martins, Carroll, Geremi, N’Zogbia, Lua Lua, Emre
If the like of Smith, Butt,Barton,Geremi to start hopefully this time they’d give the best performances of the season. Win it for us fans.

Give Barton and Smith a rest for this game. . !! !

I must object at your harsh crticisms toward Alan Smith. Have you not considered that had he good service he would score? I ma not suggesting he would become prolific but he would surely get an odd goal now and again.
Smith is not a natural goal getter and he knows this but it is not as though he is oblivious as to where the goal is. No doubt he has some knowledge but Service at Newcastle this season has been very very very bad, that our top goal scorer has what 5 - 6 goals is an insult.
Owen and Viduka and Martins have not been firring on all cylinders surely this must be a case of a very very poor service from midfield.
Yes strikers can create a chance or two from nothing but never before has a striker created all 20 + goals in a season on thier own, even the Great Thierry Henry could not make more than 5 - 7 Goals a season on hi own.
Give him a break, if he scores tonight you will sing his praises.
