HT: Birmingham 1 Newcastle 0 - Magpies Look Fragile

March 17th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 171 Comments

birmingham-city-fc-logo.png nufc-crest.png

The game was fairly even in the first half, and Birmingham City went closest to scoring several times in the first 30 minutes, before going ahead.

Then in the 33rd minute James McFadden put Birmingham ahead and yes - it was terrible defending again from Newcastle United.

It was appropriate that Birmingham’s most dangerous striker James McFadden scored, and he made it look so easy.

A fairly innocuous cross came in from the left to McFadden, and the Scot then beat Faye far too easily and put the ball casually past Steve Harper, giving the Newcastle goalkeeper no chance. It was clear that Harper was furious with the goal, another bad one to give away by Newcastle’s defense.

And so we were down again in a game through a defensive error. Having scored only 3 goals in 8 games we’ll have to score two now to win. After the goal Keegan continued to look grim in the dugout.

One goal down away from home (again), and we’ll have to see how we can fight back in a game we just can’t lose. But it will take a lot more than Newcastle showed in the first half to get anything out of this game and a defeat will put Birmingham above us in the league. It’s not looking too good for us at half time.

In the first half it’s been fairly even but Birmingham have not given us any chances through mistakes, which cannot be said for the Newcastle defense. But the Birmingham side shaded the first half and created a lot more chances than Newcastle. In fact we can’t remember a chance Newcastle created in the first 45 minutes.

The midlands side have looked a lot more dangerous in attack too, which is a little worrying.

Another disturbing aspect in the first half is that Birmingham are much sharper than Newcastle, and the Magpies have had only one shot at goal, and that was a 30 yard speculative shot over the bar from Owen.

The final 45 minutes will be a test of Newcastle’s character and courage, but we have to say things are not looking good for Newcastle.

We need some men in black and white stripes to stand up and be counted in the second half, otherwise this will be yet another defeat. :(

Where’s the fight?  Where’s the passion?  Where’s the guts?  Where’s the pride?  Where’s the goals?   We look a very sterile team and we have to wonder what’s going on at the club, because this is turning into a disaster - a real disaster for Tyneside.

If we lose this game relegation will start to look a probability rather than a possibility, but we still have 45 minutes to turn this game around.

  • 5 Optimist // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:05

Someone said if we wont beat Fulham we will be relegated,so far we cant even beat bham.. oh we are dreaming , i even doubt we will pick any points at the rest of the season.
Play the young ones, our only chance passion > skill, definitely passion > name, but at the moment i see no skill at usual first eleven.cmon Keegan show some character, drop them, they are useless. Leave Martins, Beye maybe Jose Enrique, atleast they are trying to do something.

  • 6 Kevin Lawson // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:06

Lets hope we don’t slip all the way down like leeds :(

I didn’t like Sam, but i’m not sure that he’d have gotten us relegated.

I love KK and i KNOW in time he’d sort us out, it’s just whether he has enough time and those players have enough fecking guts to keep us up :(

  • 7 Soren // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:07

Still believe!!! We’ve still got 45min to get back!!!
    COME ON TOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 9 Lasse // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:09

Bartons worst game this season. Skills, not motivation seems to be his problem…Viduka only have one move and that is not working. This is looking like another mission impossible.

  • 10 Ashton // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:13

    Bring roeder back !

  • 11 Bert Shaft // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:13

Paceless, clueless, passionless long ball crap.

I hate to say it but Keegan looks lost and seems total devoid of any ideas and tactical nous.
Denis Wise, come on down (reaches for rope!)

    F****N GET IN!!! 1 - 1

  • 45 GP // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:26

Oba gave the ball away needlessly just before, he should have turned and ran at goal. We need to stop thinking we’re Barcelona and just be a bit more direct.

Come on Keegan just because we’ve got a goal doesn’t mean we’re playing that well - we need Barton and Geremi off.

  • 46 Dave Hill // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:27

Nzog for JOEY BARTON come on Keagan

  • 47 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:28

We are playing much better and actually getting up field!!

  • 52 GP // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:30

Martins - another good shot but we NEED Geremi off, he’s sh!t

And Barton still thinks he’s Messi.

  • 59 GP // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:33

Every one of Geremi’s corners have been horrible.

  • 60 Soren // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:34

Martins really makes a difference when involved in the game! Great to have him back. Owen finding space too

  • 61 ObaFan2 // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:35

  • 63 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:36

Its true, geremi jus keeps wasting chances

  • 64 cloudstrife // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:36

we can win this. Viduka’s played welll but he looks tired. not fully fit. get Zoggy on and switch to 442.

  • 65 Dave // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:37

we want zog… even if he doesn’t want to play better corner than geremi

  • 66 cooldj // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:38

now is the time for fresh legs. zoggy zoggy zoggy zoggy.

  • 67 GP // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:38

Just show’s what a muppet keegan is - barton and geremi are still on the pitch. Barton’s looked like costing us a goal more than once. To be fair to Taylor apart from the 2 early mistakes he’s not been too bad. No worse than faye anyway,

  • 68 YongMalaysia // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:38

Barton, Geremi and Viduka off, bring on N’zogbia, Caroll and Smith. No other choice now.

OWEN ONLY SCORED BECAUSE OF OBA AND MISSED A SITTER>
MICHAEL OWEN ISNT SUBABLE IS HE. HES WHAT BULL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BARTON LOOKS OUT ON HIS FEET.
WHY DO WE TREAT OBA WITH NO RESPECT WHY????????????????????????????

  • 90 GP // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:47

We should get Carroll on for Viduka and Smith on for Barton. Smith will throw himself in front of any shots they get.

too true JJ. i’ll be shocked if Martins doesnt leave in the summer. yet he has the potential to be an AMAZING player. shame he’ll be that player at a different club.

  • 96 JJ // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:52

The answer is simple, it was to change to 442 and it was between Owen or Martins.
Guess who gerts the short end again because of bloody EMO (stupid twat). He and Butt have giving the ball away all night!!!!!!!!!!
Why do the English think OWen is a ‘god”
    he is so ordinary.

  • 97 Alan // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:53

But because of that calling Owen (who scored and playing well btw) bloody stupid twat is stupid either

  • 106 ObaFan2 // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:58

A point away from homes a point, wp and lets hope for 3 more come Saturday.

  • 111 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:00

as soon as martins came off we wernt as threatening, martins and zoggy normally team up quite well, he should have taken off geremie or viduka, dumb substitution. oh well i am so happy and pleased at how the lads performed second half i dont mind, a draw is a decent result away to birmingham. At least we now know our players are awake to the relegation battle we are in

  • 112 Hadrian // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:00

how can u call keegan :( he had to go for the point . it was 80 od mins ffs not 10 u arseholes !
pretty confident we can pick a win up v fulham after watching that .

  • 113 azvael // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:00

Martins substitution cost us the game!!! But a draw away is a great result!!!!

  • 114 ScottyT // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:01

much better second half shame we cudnt nick it but where were we in the first half man..

  • 115 kelvin // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:02

very pleased that we ground out a result and we only let one in against a team scoring 8 in 3 games so very pleasing. we looked crap first half but really improved second. it’s certainly a good sign and we got some points on the board! i agree martins shouldnt have been subbed, our most dangerous player. if anything barton should have gone.

btw someone tell geremi how to take corners!

  • 116 ObaFan2 // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:02

Sigh, KK got a point despite the players attempts imo.

  • 117 thelongshanks // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:02

  • 118 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:02

Owen is getting better i suppose, against blackburn he put away none, today he put away one of the chances he had, next time hopefully he wil bag two against fulham. COME ON THE TOON!!!

  • 119 Alan // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:03

I SERIOUSLY doubt martins would have made much difference.

  • 120 Hadrian // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:03

    cost us the game …
there you go, thats the mentality of the people we are dealing with , who seem to have unlimited time tobe so vocal.

  • 121 neozero // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:03

decent result, good performance but poor substitution on keegans part

  • 122 ende // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:05

subbing off martins likely made not a bit of difference. not really worth getting so upset over. sound like a bunch of brats.

  • 123 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:05

i hope so hadrian, i just hope our players realise that this is how they have to play until the season ends. we have had good performances before and the next game we didnt carry it on. e.g. Arsenal at home

  • 124 ObaFan2 // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:05

Hadrian, I agree with you, it’s a step forward and hoping for KK’s first win come Saturday.

    There’s no pleasing some people!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 125 ash // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:06

geremi was so poor, viduka wth was he doing, these 2 should have come off. butt, what can i say ? his long distribution is horrible. but positive thing is owen looks good i supposed and martins too. was hoping for a 2nd goal, owen should have scored though when he got thru.

  • 126 Frankie Wild // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:06

    Hey Ed
    Has KK lost the plot?
Why take Martins off, the best and only player on the team(trying)
I fell embaresed of our management team.
Let me know if you and your fellow friends are still as concerned as me.
    ??????

  • 127 ash // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:07

    but ill take the point!

  • 128 Howie // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:07

leave kk alone. much better peformance than i saw in quite a few months. ok martins sub was strange but lets get behing them saturday and stop moaning.

  • 129 JJ // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:07

Really not happy about the Oba subtitution, but Im happy with what KK got out of the lads in the second half.
I can understand him settling for a point but why take off Martins when Barton was tired and Owen really did nothing without Oba creating chances for him.
I likes Viduka holding the ball up but Id like to have seen Zog on for Barton and Carrol on for Viduka in final 5mins.

  • 130 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:08

im not going to say martins sub cost us the game because that is just speculation and no1 really knows, he could have given the ball away and cost us a goal for all we know, however, it was clear to see that we were less threatening after he came off, KK remembered what happened with blackburn and just wanted to protect the point i am sure.

  • 131 Howie // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:08

i dont understand what yee all say about butt. who else can we put in there. i thought he was ok tonight

  • 132 paddyq // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:09

good to finally see some fight. pity about the first half though. martins and nzogbia need to be on, the only guys who can create something out of nothing. martins was brilliant in the box in the second half. good result against a tough birmingham side and now we are looking good at home to fulham

  • 133 JJ // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:10

Agree, Howey, strange sub, Im not gona judge him on one mistake, he must just learn that oWen CAN come off too so Martins doesnt always get unfair choice.
I DONT want to lose him in the Summer.
    Go Kev and go NUFC.

  • 134 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:10

one thing i must say about the game is that if it were big sam speaking to them at half time, would we have come back out the way we did? probably not, today was a day when kk’s motivation worked perfectly i cant deny that.

  • 135 ScottyT // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:11

after that i hope people plz realise how shite joey thuggy barton is.. he does nothing he must have gave the ball away at least 15-20 times tonight his passing is absolutely awful, hes slow, hes going to jail why do we keep faith with him

thought butt pld quite well but when everyone fit id rather have emre and either butt zog or geremi even tho geremi is shite as well

  • 136 CJ // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:11

Zog on for Barton on the 60min would have done me but i have to say i was expecting us to go and get beating so it was a good result i would be happy with the same team against Fulham with Zog replacing Barton and get Oba further forward.

  • 137 Jack // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:11

I think Barton’s becoming the new Butt based on tonights performance. Gave the ball away everytime he got it.

  • 138 paddyq // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:12

howie butt is a liability in normal circumstances, however tonight his performance was acceptable. however next season we must aspire to have a much better defensive midfielder. until then nicky, its up to you!
ps who on earth calls there son nicky, especially considering the surname

  • 139 millepede // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:12

    at least smith didnt play

  • 140 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:12

JJ Owen should not have been subbed today, he was class in the second half and was all over the pitch.

Today we went to birminghams ground and outclassed them in the second half despite them leading and being really high on confidence. I am proud of the lads

  • 141 peted // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:13

some people just dont hav a clue. u complain about keegan preventing the win, but look what hapend when he went all out against blackburn- we ended up wiv nothing!

  • 142 ObaFan2 // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:14

Look at Ed’s half time blog report:

    “magpies-look-fragile”

Well that certainly doesn’t resemble the second half so lay off KK, he’ll keep us in the prem. and he’ll buy good in the summer.

  • 143 Mick G // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:14

I’ve tried to bite my lip since KK came back’cause I like the bloke and he should be given a chance. He’s at best clueless .There I’ve said it.Sorry if it upsets some people but it is true.To take Martins off was gutless. He took the easy option instead of taking off one of the so called established “Stars”.What Geremi is doing on a premiership pitch is beyond me.I have never seen him deliver a decent cross , corner or freekick since he as been at NUFC.yet they let him take every one.Once Martins went off a draw was the best we could hope for.He was NUFC most dangerous player by miles, but Keegan couldn’t or wouldn’t see it.Hopefully with a bit of luck and despite Keegans obvious failings Newcastle may stay up.Those of you who think Keegan should stay on next season are living in the past or are to sentimental, get real Kevin’s time as been and gone, and as I said at the begining of this rant I like the bloke

  • 144 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:14

we should leave the team exactly the same for fulham as now is not the time to be chopping and changing after a good performance. We need to stick with this team and let them gel, if they play crap next time then we should make changes

  • 145 CJ // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:15

100% agree Scotty T Barton give the ball away all night he has the legs of a 70 women on her zimma will no doubt get locked up and taken up the rear i have to say other than Geremi’s crossing he had a decent game one of his best yet for us but his corners were shocking.

  • 146 Howie // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:15

paddyq i agree. butt is not acceptable next season but for the moment i think that line up we played tonight will keep us up this season and then we can worry about next season. a win on saturday is key though

  • 147 Frankie Wild // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:15

Im still worried as i know all you are,
I can not slag Kk. but im sure all you are not convinced
    And 100% about today.
They have no balls going forward.
Hopefully this shit result today can help.
    OUR SORRY TEAM
    sorry to be so harsh

  • 148 ObaFan2 // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:16

millepede, you’re dead right, had forgotten about him lmao.

Geremi n Barton were bad and Duke had a 50/50 but he hasn’t played in a while, imo he should have been subbed not Oba but that’s not up to me.

Whoever said Geremi could take corners was having a laught too.

  • 149 JJ // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:17

    haleluja millipede, haleluja…

  • 150 Eamonn // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:18

If we beat Fulham & Reading, draw with mackems plus another two points on the road =survival . Keegan’s gonna save us again, I guess he wanted to get Zog on a 4-4-2, and Martins was on the left in fairness to him. Don’t be so negative about Keegan lads, Respect to the Man.

  • 151 CJ // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:18

Faye had a shocker of a fist half but second half he put in a good performance alongside Taylor.

  • 152 millepede // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:18

drangor, you wouldnt swap milner & duff for geremi and barton - they were seriously ineffective today

  • 153 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:19

mick g i am not a 100% kk fan but give the guy a break today, we went for the win with blackburn and was punished, you cant really blame him for taking off a striker. I dont think it was a good substitution either but i can kind of see reason behind it. He probably wanted viduka to stay on for his threat in the air as we were clearly going to start punting balls up the end of the field. Owen was working his ass off and i did not want him off the pitch, i dont think many did.

  • 154 Frankie Wild // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:21

    Mick G
at least some one speaks sense.

  • 155 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:22

milipede i know those two are better players AT THE MINUTE but i just dont want to disrupt things if you know what i mean, today was a good performance for most, and a bad performance for geremi and barton, but next time they might perform better, they are both fresh back arent they? i dont think you should drop someone every time they have a bad game

  • 156 Dunc // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:23

    What T F was that?
What T F was the starting line up?
What T F was Viduka doing on the pitch after 45 minutes?
W hat T F was Joey Barton doing at all?
    Why T F can’t Geremi take a corner?
    Why TF was Martins replaced?
Why TF did Zog or Duff not start?

That was disgusting. I had my mate round watching the match and he says it’s like watching Oldham. I agree!!!!! And the manager f**in jossed it!!!!!

  • 157 JJ // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:24

That is true Spiro, Owen did work hard today, which was nice to see, but I do feel he needs someone like Martins and Viduka on the pitch in order to be effective.
We cant always play 3 strikers, so my preferable two up front will beMartins and Viduka.
Owen though, as much as I have ranted, its not directly his fault Martins was subbed.
So well played and keep it up!!!

  • 158 Dunc // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:24

    Oh… and Owen on 107 K

    What T F for??

  • 159 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:25

wow! now i see why some people have a go at me when i moan, some people are just never satisfied unless not a SINGLE mistake happens in the whole game…come on guys, lay off

  • 160 Frankie Wild // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:26

    Open your eyes! Please
we are still not a team.
sorry to be so negative but…..
I can still see the light
Keep Martins on, what ever the team.
    What do you think???

  • 161 GP // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:27

The only players who were poor all game were Geremi and Barton. Viduka needs match fitness and did what he needed to do - keegan is just too thick to see he was knackered by the end.

  • 162 Frankie Wild // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:28

    Dunc
At least you have your head screwed on
    Agreenent

  • 163 CJ // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:33

I have to disagree about people saying Geremi had a bad game cos if you have seen us this season you will know he had an absolute great game to his usual.

  • 164 Mick G // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:33

Spyro your probably right,I should give KK a break as I keep saying I like him but I think he should be more ruthless with some of the players.I agree the game was crying out For Nzogbia but not at the Expense of Martins. He add something different to the side and tonight he was the one who could have won it for us.It should have been Viduka , Geremi , Barton or dare I say it Owen, But never Martins, The poor blokes confidence will be shot to bits now.Just look at his team mates reactions when he was substituted none of them could believe it.

  • 165 Frankie Wild // Mar 17, 2008 at 22:40

    Ok, Im bored of it.
The whole team ba a few playears were again below par! But what par are we now.
    Ask yourselfs.
    No Heart and no desire.
If im wrong i would appreciette your concerns.
Ok by the way Viduka was shit Bartin should just get him self ready for table tennis and butt needs a crutch.
again sorry to be so morbit.
but im sure you know how i feel

  • 166 CRAIGG // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:02

“i rather we lose it and sack useless KK. i am so angry to the Stupid KK. if he cant do the job well, don accept this job when Ashely offer. ”

What an idiot, Had we lost we would be in the shit.

It was good tactics by KK to take the point and not take the risks of losing it like we did against blackburn.

Oba was unlucky maybe Owen should have come off but to go to 442 when under pressure is a good tactical move

    Bell end

  • 167 Frankie Wild // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:08

    Craigg
Speak sense do you have a opinion or
do you just agrree with every bull shit idea

  • 168 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:15

Craigg is right, going 442 is not a bad idea considering what happened against blackburn where we went for it and lost, it was a very hard decision for kk to make and the only thing he did wrong was make the wrong choice when picking the player to exit the pitch. I personally would have taken off a barton or geremi and made viduka act as a sort of attacking midfielder/second striker, this way he could flick on the long balls to owen and martins.

  • 169 Frankie Wild // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:18

    only joking
but still no one with better ideas
    or management skills
    hahahhah
i will take bets on if. whith loose against Fulham and I mean if…..
How many can the non wearing tops, silly geordies call his name.
    and bring our team down.

use your brains (sorry non of them) sort it ou

  • 170 Spyro a.k.a Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:18

i also would have made the change about 10 or so minutes earlier, but again that is another difficult decision. do you make a change and hope it has a positive effect? or do you leave it if your team is playing well and you do not want to disrupt things?

  • 171 Frankie Wild // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:40

1 wrong move taking off OBFM.
