Newcastle United striker Michael Owen is on a list of football’s top wage earners that has recently been leaked to the press.

Michael Owen - thumbs up - my wages are up there - sky high
The England striker, who plied his trade at Liverpoool and Real Madrid before arriving at Newcastle in August, 2005, is said to £107K a week at St James’ Park.
That’s equivalent to £5.9m ($11.8M) a year at Newcastle, which is bigger than CEOs of multi-national companies earn, who run companies with billions of pounds in revenue. But that’s the life and times we live in now.
The Daily Star reports a list of the game’s top earners which was published on a Portuguese financial website. Well, maybe this story isn’t as cast iron as we first thought.
But hey, if nothing else it’s interesting and the report claims 11 of the 17 stars earning more then £100K a week play in the Premier League. That in itself is not surprising, because it seems every player wants to play in England these days. Hopefully, that’s not just because of the money, but the football in England is just top class and some of the PL matches we see in the US and around the world are a joy to watch.
The fact England has 4 teams in the quarter finals of the European Champions league is another sign of that dominance. Maybe if he had been allowed 6 teams in that number would be even more.
And 15 players of the top 20 are with English clubs.
World’s top 20 football earners
Kaka (AC Milan) - £143,438 a week
Ronaldinho (Barcelona) - £135,788 a week
Frank Lampard (Chelsea) - £130,050 a week
John Terry (Chelsea) - £130,050 a week
Fernando Torres (Liverpool) - £126,255 a week
Andriy Shevchenko (Chelsea) - £124, 313 a week
Michael Ballack (Chelsea) - £124, 313 a week
Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd) - £122,400 a week
Thierry Henry (Barelona) - £122,400 a week
Steven Gerard (Liverpool) - £122,400 a week
Dider Drogba (Chelsea) - £117,619 a week
Wayne Rooney (Man Utd) - £116,663 a week
Iker Casillas (Real Madrid) - £114,570 a week
Michael Owen (Newcastle) - £107,100 a week
Sol Campbell (Portsmouth) - £105, 188 a week
Raul (Real Madrid) - £102,319 a week
Ruud van Nistlerooy (Real Madrid) - £102,319 a week
Rio Ferdinand (Man Utd) - £96,581 a week
Darren Bent (Tottenham) - £94,669 a week
Carlos Tevez (Man Utd) - £93,713 a week
Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack of Chelsea don’t seem to be earning their money, do they? Notice also that David Beckham does not make the list because his guaranteed wages at the LA Galaxy are relatively small, and his overall earnings are in promotional type events and advertising.
If only we could have the choice of three players form that list for next season
Didn’t see Titus Bramble on that list did you?
Just kidding.
Match kicks off in 50 minutes.
Howay the Lads.

1-0 to the brum
18 daiv // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:03
Great result. Brum are hard to beat at home. The main thing is that we did not lose. battled hard in second half. Only Barton disappointed. Nzog for Barton against Fulham and 3 pts in bag.

owen is not a has been, he is a goal getter ,even with little service hes got us a point today, if we can stay up buy players who provide him good passes and wait u see how many he scores
20 James // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:40
We’ll soon be paying a lot of players those kind of wages so get used to it.
To bring the likes of Carrick, and other top class players we need to pay top wages, otherwise they go elsewhere.
Owen actually gives a lot of money away to kids charities every year. Something the bling boys at Chelsea don’t do.
21 Leo // Mar 17, 2008 at 23:56
cambell and bent are shock inclusions in that list for sure.

i wish people would stop going on about how much players are being paid! its boring now, not to mention a little bit rude course they are gonna try and get as much as they can they are human! if you can get 107k a week who here wouldnt take it? to be honest it really doesnt matter at all what the players are being paid lets just support the team and stop tryin to pick out the bad things everyday please!!! (thats not a dig at u Ed im just saying, everytime i come on here i hope to get a little lift, hoping for summin to make me feel better but all i ever find now is negative news, and i know there aint alot of positive news around for us right now but even when things were lookin bad earlier in the season this was still a positive website but things have changed alot its turned into a negative website for people to come and moan and argue about our team! and who really needs to hear that? coz i certainly dont.)
