Newcastle Make Bold £9M Bid For Bafe

The Daily Mirror is linking Newcastle United today with a bid for Bafetimbi Gomis.

Bafe Gomis - St Etienne striker on his way to Newcastle?

The Mirror is reporting today that Newcastle United have made a bid of £9M for St Etienne’s powerful striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

We’ve been linked with Gomis for a while now, as well as lots of other good players. However, the Mirror says that top-level sources on Tyneside and in France claim that an offer has indeed been made by the Tyneside club.

The French club are said to be considering the offer, which seems an extremely generous one to us, and whether they will accept the bid. St Etienne are said to want £12M for Gomis but that fact alone is probably why Newcastle have bid so high for him initially.

We think that’s an excellent offer from the club for Gomis, if it’s in fact true. Apparently Bolton were also interested, and put in a £7M bid, which fell short and was rejected.

But it’s up to Keagan who he wants to bring in, and we can only assume that Kevin gave the go ahead to go out and get Gomis, but that shouldn’t have been too difficult for him.

The Daily Mirror says the deal will be done over Kevin’s head but that’s just not true. In fact it’s hogwash. It’s just another rather weak attempt at destabilizing the club and the working relationship between Kevin and the recruitment team. Don’t you believe it.

Gomis has been likened to Didier Drogba, of Chelsea, so that can’t be too bad.

The obvious question that comes to mind here is what if we are relegated?

We assume if that’s the case, and contracts are being signed now, that there will be a get out clause for Newcastle and Gomis in the unlikely event that Newcastle.

But you know that saying about the plans of mice and men, and Murphy’s law - anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

We have one last thought on all of this - let’s beat Birmingham tonight.

Comments very welcome.

good that we are trying to sort out deals for next year, because i want us to be proactive in the transfer window for once. we all know what we lack as a team

  • 2 George // Mar 17, 2008 at 12:11

Good if we get him, shows that KK and the NUFC name and reputation still have some attraction.
My main concern is his nationality. Is he African?
I am concerned that we may be getting too many african players and the result is an exodus of players to the African Cup of Nations, leaving NUFC short on players again.

  • 3 Hadji // Mar 17, 2008 at 12:14

Go for him KK and you’ll have the new Drogba in your team…but in this case,a younger one.
This guy is more rated than Adebayor while in Monaco and Benjani while in Auxerre.
Look at those 2 now in the premiership, both of them in the top 5 list.
We’ll struck a deal for 10,5 mill with St Etienne.
Pandev is next, ouu this just made my day.

  • 4 ToonKing // Mar 17, 2008 at 12:28

He’s french George with African origins, at least as far as i know.
I’m glad were getting the transfer ready in time but to be honest 9M seems a little to high, i know he’s the new Drogba and everything, but we had a few of this “new XY” guys over the years and they flopped, time will tell though.

“In the unlikley event we get relegated”

If we get beaten tonight I’d say we’re odds on to go down, every other team seems to want to stay in the prem more than us.
Unfortunately our lot seem to be more bothered about planning thier next move / wage increase than actually fighting to stay up :(

  • 6 Luke // Mar 17, 2008 at 12:30

    This won’t come off

  • 7 Hadrian // Mar 17, 2008 at 12:32

were not getting relegated , dont even think like that !!
all is well and were gearing up for next season , la la la la la *whistle* hum .

  • 8 Toonlad // Mar 17, 2008 at 12:37

Get a few more players from Africa in the Toon Team and we can perhaps think about putting a bid in for the African Cup to be held at SJP in the years to come. Save all that travelling.

If this deal does hold water, then there’s no harm in laying some groundwork now, as Leo says. Let’s be proactive, even if it falls through later. However, lads, we are staying up now, aren’t we?

He certainly looks like DD. If he has as much talent, then we’re on a winner.

  • 9 Hadji // Mar 17, 2008 at 12:47

Toonlad…Don’t worry mate,he plays for France so no African cup for him.

  • 10 Hammy // Mar 17, 2008 at 12:49

If the toon are busy lining up deals for next season the hierarchy must be super confident about our Premier League status……….
I’m more interested in who’s gonna be leaving,
hopefully they’ll be hiring a minibus as opposed to the taxi, for the outgoing players.

  • 11 Astidores Sanchez Blanco // Mar 17, 2008 at 12:50

The club has not yet made a bid for Gomis. This is because the player does not want to join the club if we are in the Championship next season and would rather wait until the summer before making any decision on his future.

Also I know for a fact Tony Jimenez and Jeff Veterre, having looked at Gomis over the last couple of months are currently now based in Spain and Switzerland respectively.

  • 12 Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 13:03

how do you know that blanco

  • 13 toonhitman // Mar 17, 2008 at 13:09

if he is as good as they say why are the top clubs in europe noe after him! from what i can gather there has only been intrest from bolton,i might be wrong like

  • 14 Hadji // Mar 17, 2008 at 13:14

Toonhitman…Don’t forget Arsenal and Aston Villa are also interested in him.

  • 15 HeronMag // Mar 17, 2008 at 13:14

Anyone remember our last French striker Stephane Guivarc’h haha!?

God we’ve had some crap over the years haha!

  • 16 toonhitman // Mar 17, 2008 at 13:17

hadji well he will go to arsenal then hes not going to come to the toon if he can play in cl with arsenal

  • 17 Hadji // Mar 17, 2008 at 13:20

Most probably cause Wenger’s not quite sure what’s gonna happen to Eduardo so he’s looking for his replacement.

  • 18 Davies // Mar 17, 2008 at 13:20

    Don’t we need defenders?

I could be wrong, but we have Martins, Owen, Carroll, Smith, Viduka, Troisi, Zamblera, Lualua and probably some more stashed away somewhere….

Of course, if we can sell Smith and Viduka, that might leave £9m for a boy wonder. Apparently, Sunderland are going to offer £4m for Smith and QPR are going to offer £2m for Stephen Carr. £3m for Mark Viduka anyone?

Unfortunately, if the past is anything to go by, whatever skill Gomis has now is likely to evaporate the minute he pulls on the black and white stripes of my beloved Newcastle United.

  • 19 toonhitman // Mar 17, 2008 at 13:23

if gomis picks the toon over arsenal he has to touched

  • 20 Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 13:24

stop being silly, i doubt arsenal are going in for him, the media just links arsenal to every single good french player

  • 21 Dragoner // Mar 17, 2008 at 13:26

plus arsenal do not need another striker, Carlos Vela is coming back to them in the summer so he will be like a new top signing

  • 22 Hadji // Mar 17, 2008 at 13:29

    I hope you’re right Spyro :-)

  • 23 Spyro // Mar 17, 2008 at 13:34

lol, spyro, i like that, that is my new name from now on

  • 24 Eric // Mar 17, 2008 at 13:35

Hope Gomis indicates the door for Smith, Viduka and Owen.

  • 25 Dunc // Mar 17, 2008 at 14:03

Red top trash and I don’t believe a word of what these papers say anymore.

When I see it I’ll believe it.

In the mean time I’m still not buying this type of gutter press and refuse to give them their wages for having agendas against certain teams.

Would you give me 35p or whatever it is to “go make toilet” on a piece of paper and then sell it in a corner shop?

    I think not!!!!

I might try it if we beat Brum tonight though. Just because I’ll be so happy.

  • 26 Spyro // Mar 17, 2008 at 14:09

some media are tippin us to win 2-o, maybe they know something we dont eh? lol

  • 27 ELFER // Mar 17, 2008 at 14:27

fantastic partner to MARTINS! first sign that OWEN would be sold in summer?

But as said, first concerne is to stay up now and to win today! But I’m positive about this!

  • 28 Hadrian // Mar 17, 2008 at 14:35

calling him the next drogba does the lad no favors .
setting him up for a fall :(

  • 29 Spyro // Mar 17, 2008 at 14:39

you gotta love youtube, already someone has posted on videos of this guy “coming to newcastle for 9million” lol, jumping the gun or what

  • 30 daiv // Mar 17, 2008 at 15:13

Typical NUFC trying to buy players for next season when they have not secured place in prem. Its called taking your eye off the ball and seems to sum up Keegan. No good player is coming to NUFC until they know where the club will be next season. KK should concentrate on keeping us up. He’s making a hell of a job of getting us relegated. We will lose tonight because Brum want it more than our muppets. We must beat Fulham.

  • 31 Hadrian // Mar 17, 2008 at 15:22

daiv , your the only muppet we have . ;)

  • 32 scott9 // Mar 17, 2008 at 15:51

were in for fletche rof hibs aswell aparently but they have slapped a 25m price tag on his head i aint seen any of them play before so i hope if we get 1 or both of them they will adapt to the prem

  • 33 Tom_Toon // Mar 17, 2008 at 16:10

    Amine Chermiti is brilliant.

  • 34 lee // Mar 17, 2008 at 16:52

    log on to TOON ULTRAS.COM

  • 35 Edd Case // Mar 17, 2008 at 17:33

Great signing if we get him, however, I’d much prefer news of a 9million or whatever proper, world class defender or four…

  • 36 jeff // Mar 17, 2008 at 17:36

Im getting sick and tired of the press always saying things are done behind Keegans head……………….If we sign him great…But keegan will have the final say in who we go for

  • 37 scott9 // Mar 17, 2008 at 18:16

dood point edd case i would much rather that aswell i say start from the back and go from there

  • 38 obafemimartins // Mar 17, 2008 at 18:38

once again the papers have said something that is probably a load of rubbish but the news of the world said city want owen. can only hope it is true.

  • 39 Gooderz // Mar 17, 2008 at 18:48

Mertesacker would be class and there are rumours going around that he is becoming unsettled in the Bundesliga.

We might have to shell out a bit, but it’s worth a go especially when people are linking him with the likes of Villa and Pompey (although that could be more rubbish from the Mail).

  • 40 martins // Mar 17, 2008 at 19:08

I would personaly like to see Vincent Kompany go to the toon he is an excellent young defender ive watchd a couple of his matches with hamburg i think he would be 1 of the best defenders we have ever had imo.

as for a striker im sick of seeing older past it strikers at the toon 1 being michael owen 2 viduka list goes on surely if our scouts are soo good we should be trying to find younger players like 21+ sum1 like jeremy menez or sum 1 like that as for this gomis player its all hype like luque bet he is shite overated to f**k

  • 41 hanzemre // Mar 17, 2008 at 19:18

i do care less about this coming off than we’d win against the Brum tonight & starting getting points to be safe ASAP.Only then we’d appropriate to offloading as many deadwoods in the squad & repace with better quality & fresh faces.

  • 42 chuck // Mar 17, 2008 at 21:54

Whats happened to Viduka, was great at receiving and holding up front, decent in the air and could get a shot off quickly, as for Owen ,needs a big guy to feed him, Crouch could have been that perfect partner.
But screw it, its time to clean house, lets see the young bloods do their thing.
Relegation is something no one wants, but it would afford a no fear attitude where a youthfull team would be allowed the opportunity show their mettle, cant believe what a crap team this has become since Bobby was axed.
As for Gomis, aint seen him play sounds decent according to reports, if he wants to join the youth movement, why not .
