We Must Take Momentum Into Saturday - Keegan

Thursday March 20th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 78 Comments

Kevin Keegan and Newcastle fans are looking forward to a first win for Keegan’s Newcastle, after Kevin has been in charge for over two months.

Kevin Keegan - first win on Saturday? - hope so
The expectation is huge on Saturday that we can get our first league win in over 3 months, but it’s also true that we cannot afford to be over-confident and fully expect Fulham to put up a great fight, having shown much improved form lately.

Kevin talked to Newcastle World TV this morning.

“We can take a lot of positives from Monday night,” “The character to come out the way we did in the second-half was very encouraging, as was the fact we did not concede another after going behind, because that hasn’t always been the case this season.”

“In the second-half we looked like we had a goal threat in us and carved them open a few times.” “In the end I think Birmingham were fortunate to get a point.”

“And, because all of these things came in the second-half, it gives us great momentum going into Fulham.” “It’s at home in front of our own fans and we know what a win would do for everyone.”

“Not only would it take us further away from the bottom three but it gives players and fans a huge lift.”

We expect Viduka, Owen and Martins to start again on Saturday, and we eoect an all-out assault form the first whistle - to the end of the game. If we can only take out chances for a change, we could well be a few goals up come the break.

This is a vital game that can turn the season once and for all, and ensure we survive in the PL for next season.

Then we can expect some exciting new players join the club in the summer ……… hopefully.

Comments welcome.

DOn’t care if we take the army in

  • 2 Gloryhunter // Mar 20, 2008 at 12:20

to Saturday, as long as we win!

  • 3 Rich // Mar 20, 2008 at 12:35

Come on the toon!!! 3 POINTS ON SATURDAY!! I hope the players are up for it as much as me id like to see the same team played ecept swapping Barton for Zog!

  • 4 Matthew Tom // Mar 20, 2008 at 12:37

Does anyone agree with me that the additional effort and responsibility required in a three-man midfield the other night seemed to bring out something good in Joey Barton?

  • 5 ObaFan2 // Mar 20, 2008 at 12:47

Jury is still out (in more than 1 way lol) over Barton Matthew Tom, I think he’s been the biggest disappointment this season other than Roz maybe.

Got to win Saturday and with Oba back (for good I hope) and Duke a full game under his belt and Owen scoring, could be a fine game indeed.

Again we need a good TEAM performance and the likes of Taylor have to concentrate for the full match.

  • 6 Keane will have to cough up. Facing £120k fine for tantrum // Mar 20, 2008 at 12:53

We should that to our players if they make us lose games

  • 7 James // Mar 20, 2008 at 12:55

Matthew Tom - no, Barton was shockingly poor. Gave the ball away all the time. He is a complete waste of space as a person and should be in prison. But what surprises everyone is how poor he’s become as a footballer. He’s obviously distracted by the off the field stuff.

He will be going to jail next month anyway. Hopefully for a very long time.

  • 8 ELFER // Mar 20, 2008 at 13:06

I’m confident like never before, that saturday this bad duck will brake down and we will get that 3:0 win finally! ready for take off?

  • 9 James // Mar 20, 2008 at 13:06

Players I want gone in the summer

    Cacapa - terrible
Taylor - makes sooo many mistakes
Faye - crap at Bolton and no change at the toon
    Rozenhal - useless
    Carr - fat and lazy
    Butt - liability
Emre - he prefers not to play
Milner - can’t cross a ball to save his life.
Duff - runs around in circles
Geremi - has the legs of a fifty year old
    Smith - nasty and crap
NZogbia - hates playing for us
Barton - thug who will be serving jail time.

Most of these are championship players at best. If you want to compete with the top four you need players that look like a top four team.

  • 10 Leo Kompany for the Toon // Mar 20, 2008 at 13:16

rozehnal would have been a good player if he had stayed im sure of that!

  • 11 faustino // Mar 20, 2008 at 13:21

TBH with you James I wouldn’t disagree with any of that; but, as with all these posts, I fail to see what the real relevance is until June?

Does every thread have to become about which team we’d pick and how sh*t a squad we’ve got. It kind of goes without sayin now!

I predict 5 goals at least this weekend - how they split is anyones guess.

  • 12 Leo // Mar 20, 2008 at 13:54

faustino most of the time it does turn into the whole who we would pick who we would get rid of etc. just its what people want to talk about, if it makes the day go quicker

  • 13 Gooderz // Mar 20, 2008 at 13:55

    I disagree James.

Taylor still has potential and we must seek the right partner for him. If he still continues to play as he has done after that then sell him.

Duff, Zog and Milner will be great players for us once the team is fully re-jigged into one of an attacking nature. If the movement from the central midfield pairing and strikers is poor then these 3 will remain ineffective.

Faye was useful at Bolton but they definitely defended better when he was paired with Ben Haim. I could see him taking Butt’s place in the team, breaking up attacks and allowing 3 other midfielders to get forward. It would also let the fullbacks get forward too.

The remaining players can go and replaced with the quality we need. Some targets may sound ambitious but if we don’t ask we won’t get. Plus that’s why we got Jimenez on board.

Besides, a complete overhaul will make a very difficult task even more so.

  • 14 James // Mar 20, 2008 at 13:56

I want a win more than anytime I can remember.

But have a nervous feeling that it will be 2-2

  • 15 James // Mar 20, 2008 at 14:02

Gooderz - If I hear potential anymore about players at Newcastle I’m gonna scream. Used to listen to potential claims, about :

    Ameobi
    Bramble
    Viana
    Carl Cort
    And many more

But don’t get me wrong, I know Taylor will never be sold. He’s here for life. Or at least so in 5-6 years people can still claim he’ll come good any minute and prove his “potential”

Not having a go mate, just tired of the Taylor mistakes which have cost us so dearly this season

  • 16 Leo // Mar 20, 2008 at 14:05

yep, i hate the word potential too james, vianna was unlucky because before he disclocated his shoulder he was having a great run of games and was looking good for us

  • 17 faustino // Mar 20, 2008 at 14:11

    Fair enough Leo et al.

Taylor is pure calamity territiory and, as is pointed out on every toon board in the world, his habit of telling others what to do must make the likes of Beye, Feye etc. want to smack him one.

As far as potential goes it seems to me that in a couple of years we have a cracking Left back in Enrique. Other than that I don’t see much of the P word in the first squad and as awlays with the youngsters it remains to see if their talents shine in the first team.

I seem to remember people having a lot of hope for a certain striker playing down the road at the moment.

  • 18 Punk Skunk // Mar 20, 2008 at 14:36

There is NO WAY IN HELL that we are gonna get shot of a whole team of players for next season…
…It’s a DUMB plan…How long d’y'think it would take to settle in 11+ players…It would just lead to another season like this one…Boooo!..
…Stop sayin’ ship out 10/11/12 players, it’s silly!..
…The only way that it could possibly happen is if we’re relagated, so think on!..

  • 19 Punk Skunk // Mar 20, 2008 at 14:38

Sorry, i don’t mean to piss on anyones chips, but,
while i know you just want a great team etc,…
    …It’s gonna take time!..

  • 20 A geordiedoonsooth // Mar 20, 2008 at 14:45

You lot on here haven’t a clue Taylor will turn out to be a top class centre half why don’t you all go support the sh*te down the road

  • 21 MattyDread // Mar 20, 2008 at 15:08

I find it amazing how suddenly everyone is calling Faye crap (and a lot worse). He has without doubt been our most consistent performer in defence when he’s played and the one mistake he has made should not hide the fact he has been an absolute rock the rest of the time.

Yes, the mistake he made against Brum was terrible and could from one angle have cost us two points; but bloody hell man - all top players have made mistakes.

The fact is Faye is a great asset to the team. He’s pretty much the only defender in the squad who regularly does what needs to be done with minimal fuss.

  • 22 Onkar Judge // Mar 20, 2008 at 15:19

Michael Owen is in the England squad :)

Alan Smith isn’t in the England squad :(

  • 23 geordie_jordan // Mar 20, 2008 at 15:22

well said mate. faye has been outstanding this year.

  • 24 Leo // Mar 20, 2008 at 15:23

i dont think faye is crap btw… also i think taylor is good and has the dreaded P, but he needs a rest at the moment.

  • 25 Spyro // Mar 20, 2008 at 15:25

yeah faye has been class, but its what i expect from some of these lot, the same happened with cacapa, when he was playing well people were saying he was a good experienced defender, couple of bad games later and its “get him out, hes crap” its quite annoying really.

  • 26 CRAIGG // Mar 20, 2008 at 15:41

Spyro i think Cacapa demonstrated from quite early on in his newcastle career that he doest have the pace, ability in the air and physique to be a success here.

Faye has been great i cant believe that people are turning on him after one bad match

One word on Taylor and Rozenhal they were both outstanding at the start of the season, until the Man City match after which They were dropped harshly i thought, as we played against an in form side away from home and neither have recovered obviously rozenhal has gone and Taylor has dippd his form dramatically but he will be good again next season.

    Bad management from Spam

  • 27 THELONGSHANKS // Mar 20, 2008 at 15:43

I have heard faye, martins, cacapa and milner to name a few go from great hardworking players to being rubbish within one match.Martins personally i think is our biggest asset and fair play to rodeor for signing him and benitez for signing kuyt as he was rodeors first choice.I dont think the team took relegation serious until before the blackburn game and now hopefully we will move up i am predicting a 12th place finished.cmon the toon!

  • 28 CRAIGG // Mar 20, 2008 at 15:45

    Thelongshanks

I would take a 17th place finish and see the back of this horrendus season now.

  • 29 Johann // Mar 20, 2008 at 15:45

    James and Gooderz:
Don´t talk about things you don´t know.
Really Faye was immense last season for bolton when he was paired with his namesake Meite. They were so strong together and when Ben Haim came back it all collapsed.
Faye is a must to keep.
I´d sell a lot of players though

Given - don´t need him. Have harper and three fantastic young keepers
    Carr - eeeeeeeeeh
    Cacapa - no good
    Roz - unbelieveably bad
Duff - if we can get money for him great
Zogbia - I don´t want a player that sulks everytime he doesn´t like something. And if we get that amount for him that is talked about then great
    Geremi - useless
Smith - if we get a decent amount for him, he just slows our play down
Owen - If we get good money for him then sell him. We need to build our team for the future. Owen is clearly the past. Doesn´t nothing without help

Other players are at least useful in my eyes.
But I really think it´s crucial that we start trying Zamblera and Carroll together in the reserves.

  • 30 THELONGSHANKS // Mar 20, 2008 at 15:53

Johann-i think baheng and donaldson will be goodchoices up front aswell, hopefully we still after few attacking youngsters in midfield cuz emre is never fit and hence why smith will be kept.

  • 31 CRAIGG // Mar 20, 2008 at 15:56

Johann i agree with you over Faye but ill repeat what you said Dont talk about things you dont know

Wait until Steve Harper starts his old tricks slicing clearences over his shoulder and letting shots go under his body

Youll all want Shay back in before you know it

I like Harper but he has been second choice for the last 10 seasons for a reason

Because he isnt good enough to wipe shays arse.

A fully fit Shay is the Worlds best.

  • 32 Spyro // Mar 20, 2008 at 15:59

i disagree about shay, he has never been on the same level as van der sar, cech or buffon

  • 33 Leo // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:00

bit harsh maybe craigg? only charmin does the job though haha.

they are both great goal keepers, shay does just nick it if they are both fully fit… and i mean fully fit. hopefully shay will be given the fullest amount of time needed to recouver fully to the injury he sustained against harewood.

  • 34 CRAIGG // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:07

He is a lot more consistant than Van Der saar and Cech

and is as good as buffon

  • 35 CRAIGG // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:09

Dont forget about the defenders those 3 keepers have had to play behind the my have 2 or 3 things to do a match compared to 10 or 11 that shay has to do.

Shay has never had a quality back 4 the closest thing was under bobby:

    Hughes O’Brien Woodgate Bernard

    Not the best Woodgate aside.

  • 36 malaysian toon // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:10

wesley, zamblera and carroll could be our 3rd and 4th and 5th choices for next season. better use the cash and improve the midfield. also need 2 get another commanding cb besides taylor

  • 37 Spyro // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:15

Craigg sorry mate but thats rubbish, Van Der Sar is not that consistent you are right but on top form he is much better than Shay, cech is VERY consistent, only this season has he had a real dip in form. Buffon is a much better all round keeper than Shay and most non nufc fans will probably agree to that, Shays core competency is shot stopping, but in terms of positioning and dominance in his area Shay is average at best. I would even say Reina is now better than Shay as his shot stopping has improved and his dominance in his area is amazing.

  • 38 Spyro // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:18

    Van Der Say;
    Dominant
    Shot stopper
    Good delivery and clearance

    Cech;
    Consistent
    Dominant
    Shot Stopper
    Good delivery and clearance

    Buffon;
    Consistent
    Dominant
    Shot Stopper
    Good delivery and clearance

    Given;
    Shot Stopper…but what else?

  • 39 ObaFan2 // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:25

Given before his injury was one of the worlds best keepers and saved us so many times in the past…… Buffon lmao

    Cech excellent keeper.

  • 40 Spyro // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:25

and lets not forget casillas who is world class aswell

  • 41 Spyro // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:26

obafan2 look at the list and tell me what given has that i have left out then

  • 42 Spyro // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:27

you laugh at buffon, that is ridiculous, he is one of the best

  • 43 Gooderz // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:27

Sorry, but with Ben Haim in the team, Bolton conceded an average of less than a goal per game. When he was absent that rate more than doubled. I’m not completely discounting Meite from those games, but Ben Haim had the greatest effect on Bolton’s defense. The reason I don’t fully include Meite is because he wasn’t there for the whole duration of that partnership as he was brought in as cover/replacement for Ben Haim due to the major doubts arising over his future at the club.

Besides, I wasn’t trying to slag him off, it’s just that I don’t see him as the best partner to help Taylor’s development (or indeed Edgar, Kadar, Tozer depending how things pan out).

  • 44 Spyro // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:31

another keeper who has been very good for the last two years is Kameni of Espanyol, not world class yet but he will go to a big club soon, same with akinfeev of russia

  • 45 CRAIGG // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:33

Have you seen how many mistakes cech has made he is hugely over rated.

Van Der saar makes so many more errors than Given and as i said put shay given behind

    Ferreira Terry Carvalho Cole

    or

    Neville Ferdinand Vidic Evra

And see how many they would concede.

Reina dominance of his area, By that i take you mean the way he comes for every cross and drops most catches or swipes at the ball constantly

I would prefer Shay to stay on his line than erratic clowns like reina between our posts.

I think you read too much into stats when all those have played in great sides that keep loads of clean sheets and the keepers hardly have anything to do.

And you have Shay given as a good shot stopper but not as a consistant keeper he has been the MOST consistant keeper anywher he has had to be.

  • 46 Spyro // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:38

Cech is NOT hugely overrated, only this season has his form dipped as i said earlier.

Van Der Sar is not consistent and does make mistakes, but on form he is arguably better than cech.

you say you would rather have given between th posts rather than “clowns like reina”, well that is the reaosn we concede so much from freekciks and corners, our keepers NEVER come to punch it out. I would rather have Reina anyday

  • 47 CRAIGG // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:52

Spyro that is a duff statement Reina is an example of what we used to Have with Srnicek he came out for everything and was caught out numerous times, Reina is a better version of Barthez makes needless surges out of his box and is caught out ala last season when Oba scored because Reina needlessly came 30 yards off his line only to blast the ball at Obas legs and the left him with an open net to tap in to.

I dont trust keepers like that

    Fucillo chief scout

    Fucillo joins the Magpies

Former Luton manager appointed as chief scout at St James’ Park

Former Luton Town player and manager Lil Fucillo has been named as chief scout at Newcastle United.

Fucillo played 180 games in the Hatters midfield between 1974-82 scoring 27 goals and has been charged with the task of recruiting the next generation of talent to revive the fortunes of the struggling Magpies.

The Bedford born Fucillo, who had playing stints at Southend, Peterborough and the Tulsa Roughnecks, replaced Ricky Hill in the Kenilworth Road manager’s seat in 2000 but only lasted a few months before Joe Kinnear took charge.

Fucillo has scouted for Peterbvorough, Everton and, most recently, Leicester City.

I tought wise was the chief scout or something like that ??? when did this happen ?

  • 49 CRAIGG // Mar 20, 2008 at 16:58

On a different note Walcotts inclusion in the England squad is a joke, He is so overrated its painful all pace and nothing else

Next Francis Jeffers if i ever saw one

  • 50 Spyro // Mar 20, 2008 at 17:16

Craigg you sound a bit bitter mate lol. Your view on walcott (apart from the Jeffers part)is very accurate…of last season at arsenal. This season he has greatly improved his finishing, dribbling, crossing and reading of the game. It all came with a bit of confidence. All pace and nothing else shows me that you had not seen him before arsenal. At southampton he was a much more confident player and although his scoring record was not amazing he demonstrated the exact same class he is showing this yr at arsenal. I agree he is not ready for the England squad yet, but Capello is smart and obviously recognises his talent and potential. What other way to speed up the maturing process than playing at international level? He is only 19 and everyone expects him to be amazing because of the hype. Trust me, he is getting there.

  • 51 Spyro // Mar 20, 2008 at 17:20

I have no doubt in my mind that Walcotts problem was/is confidence because i have seen him play for Arsnenal youths quite a lot of times and he has a great shot and a lot of skill he is scared of doing in big matches.

  • 52 Tom_Toon // Mar 20, 2008 at 17:24

Spyro - You forgot Ochoa, already on of the worlds best.

Walcott is a joke, hes gone backwards as a footballer.

  • 53 Spyro // Mar 20, 2008 at 17:28

no he hasnt tom toon, it just seems like that based on last yr, it is just confidence

when i have seen him play for the youths he is the same, if not better than his southampton days.

  • 54 Spyro // Mar 20, 2008 at 17:44

i tell you who is overrated, kyle lafferty, i do not rate him at all

  • 55 daiv // Mar 20, 2008 at 18:01

Fulham is Newcastle’s biggest game of the season. MASSIVE. Win it and we’ll pull clear. Anything but a win and we are right in it to the end. I would gladly take 4th bottom in that case right now.

  • 56 Charlie Bucket // Mar 20, 2008 at 18:44

Ed are you going to do an article about our new chief scout Fucillo?

  • 57 Tippo // Mar 20, 2008 at 19:00

Yes Daiv its the biggest game but I can see a Newcastle win this time. Three points here will go a very long way.

  • 58 Nick C // Mar 20, 2008 at 19:22

I have said since early on that Taylor looks a very iffy centre half. He is headless, is poor in possession and is very often caught out of position. I think a perfect cameo of him was on Monday night. The first thing he did was the big “come on” to the Newcastle end. Then his next two contributions were to head a pathetic clearance straight to a Brum player who missed by an inch and then he tried to head the ball on the half way line, totally misjudged it and they nearly scored again.
He is a liability. And a posing ponce as well.
