In an end to end game that hardly looked like a relegation scrap, Newcastle went into the break 1-0 up, but should have had the game wrapped up as goalkeeper Keller saved the London side with great saves on at least two occasions.
But Newcastle got off to the start they wanted when Mark Viduka scored a wonderful individual goal after just 8 minutes.
Mark got the ball on his right foot on the edge of the penalty area and then turned and hit it home into the corner, with his left foot, past the despairing dive of Kasey Keller.

A wonderful goal from the Australian International.
Then Martins almost scored a great goal with his right foot when he was free down the left with a couple of Fulham players with him. He got towards the goal edge of the box and then hit a terrific low drive with his right foot that Keller just got his left hand to, and brilliantly turned around the post.
Then Faye almost put the ball home, and there were cries for an own goal, but Newcastle were creating chances galore, but couldn’t put the ball in the net.
Owen had a couple of chances and should have scored when he had a free header from just eight yards out but he somehow headed the ball straight at Keller. That should have been 2-0.
The worrying aspect was that in the last 10 minutes of the half Fulham were coming back into the game, and had some chances but there finishing was very poor. Jimmy Bullard was easily their best player in the first half.
But Newcastle got to the half still 1-0 up and just must get more goals, because one will not be enough with the lack of confidence we still have,
Fulham have gone 31 games since their last away win – and yes - that was at Newcastle many moons ago.
But Newcastle cannot keep missing these chances and must put a couple of goals home to give them some confidence and keep the game safe..
Butt is playing well in midfield and the team looks alive but we need a couple of goals in the second half to seal this game, which is certainly not over.
We cannot have any let-downs int he second half because a goal by Fulham will give them all the confidence in the world.
Newcastle are playing the game at a high pace and if Fulham aren’t fit they may pay for that as the second half progresses. Hope so.
We must not let Fulham off the hook!

butt is playing really well. a nice suprise.
we look good going forward but a bit timid in defence. that’s just a confidence thing. i hope we can get a clean sheet to give our back 5 some confidence.
the Duke’s been very good. Owen should have made it 2-0 but i know it wont put him down. he should be fired up in the 2nd half.
LET’S GO!!
2 Soren // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:02
Hopefully we can nick a quick goal or two and get those 3 points we so badly need!
3 Steve_48 // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:02
Hope the streams settle down for 2nd half, was in no man’s land after about 15 minutes for the rest of the 1st half
4 James // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:02
I had about three heart attacks in that first half and when Owen missed the header i nearly fainted!
5 m. // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:04
i’d pay some bottles of whiskey to vodka for that strike.
6 geordie_jordan // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:04
please oh please take geremi off kev
7 YongMalaysia // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:05
they shld work their def. in second half. they make some mistake in first half and score more gaol. come on!!!
8 Andreas // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:05
Good that we kept the lead until the break. I am a bit nervous for our left flank, not cause Enrique is bad but due to the downside of 4-3-3 - i.e. our full backs are often left to defend without support. The upside is ofc that we have created quite a few chances, albeit not playing great.
Let’s hope we score early on so we can close this game. Will be extremely nervous if we can’t finish Fulham off early on.
9 Momo // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:05
2 more goals and were done. Oba has gotta score. Keller cant be Fulham hero forever. Owen should take his chances otherwise it might cost us. Viduka has just been brilliant. kept the ball, scored, passing well, what more could u want. Lets just hope for a better half
10 ObaFan2 // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:09
whey hey SBR
11 Andreas // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:10
One more thing, that damn Bullard will eventially nail one of his long shots, so please close him down damn it!
12 Steve_48 // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:10
Hard lines Viduka, nice build up play from Martins though
13 Momo // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:11
Is it me or is our defence actually starting to get better. Chris Hughton must be doing something good in training.
14 Todd // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:12
great sopcast is down again =(
15 Momo // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:14
unlucky Oba, good shot though, shame it had to be just over

Has there been an update to TVU? I have upgraded a la prompt but 21500 just does not start streaming for me - anyone got any tips?
19 Soren // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:22
Steve_48 - what version of tvu are you running? I have v.2.3.4beta1 and its working fine
20 YankFanInNZ // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:23
This Sopcast is working somewhat. Not in English, though.

Of course, now it’s crap.
21 YongMalaysia // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:23

i just om the TVU then try go to the P2P website, then click at the tvu channel (FSC) then they wil auto go to the channel, if dispaly not working, click cancel, wait for a minute, then it wil work i think, cos just now i also like that.
other link about TVants and sopcost cant work well for me.
Geremi shld sub by N’zogbia… he didnt play well
today. a bit lazy.

or
http://livefooty.doctor-serv.com/sat22.3/Newcastle_Fulham2.html
if you can’t get tvu working, then try either of these links.
NOTE: the first link requires sopcast and the second requires tvu
25 arnie // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:33
Get Geremi off and N’Zogbia on! Were two players short in midfield as long as Geremi is on. Butt and Barton cant cover everything, even though theyre doing their best
26 Momo // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:34
Martins off again???
27 cloudstrife // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:35
Martins off again. what u up to Keegs?
28 arnie // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:35
I cant believe this! Oba off? Is big fat sam managing this team? We should attack Fulham now, everyone knows we cant defend.
29 Momo // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:35
Owens been rubbish so KK keeps him on
Martins has been awesome so KK takes him off
How stupid can you get
30 Steve_48 // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:36
Soren: 2.3.5 Beta 4: it made me upgrade. The channels start to stream but freeze after about 25% level achieved then nothing. Am using TVANTS LIVE3 channel ATM and while it’s choppy it’s better than nowt - thanks
31 Dragoner // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:37
Come on Toon! Michael has NOT been clinical today
32 YongMalaysia // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:37
why martin again, it shld be take geremi off… another tactic reason!!!
33 cloudstrife // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:38
Owen’s unsubstitutable. it’s sad that we have untouchables in our club. shame.
34 Andreas // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:38
Damn, would actually prefer to get Smith on the field for Geremi, and then play Barton out on the right.
35 Steve_48 // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:39
How many more chances are we going to waste this afternoon? I just can’t watch it anymore, these next 15 minutes are going to undo us if we’re not careful

39 Andreas // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:42
Btw, don’t agree with ppl slating Owen for today. He did miss the sitter but imo he has dropped down into the pocket and played good link-up play from there. Note: I do think Oba has been good as well, same goes for Vid.
Nice goal from Owen btw.

KK does it again. Why Martins, you stupid twat??? We need space upfront and you substitute our fastest player who really played fantastic today. Oba’s smile said it all… Again a bad managerial step.
46 Steve_48 // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:43
Sometimes if you get onto 21500 before 3pm it allows you to stay on it at match time
The unclean have scored BTW

WOOOHOOOO! The lads have made my holiday! Dial-up in Montana sucks, I’ve been sitting on the edge of my seat enduring pain F5 after painfully slow F5. Thanks to all for the play by play. Now lets not pull a Bolton Reserves! Finish it!
57 Obafan // Mar 22, 2008 at 16:47
FANTASTIC!!!!! Geremi played a good game and took a fantastic free kick!!!
Owen needed to score after all his missed chances, looked like Blackburn.
Oh no, I hoped not to see Smith today and there he is. It is safe now, so he can’t do that much harm.

6 points clear of Bolton with 7 games left and 5 points clear of Birmingham.
We have Reading and Sunderland at home which we should get wins in all truth, so its in our hands now.
I hope the team is lifted by today and the second half on monday night to put up a decent display at a very good spurs team come next game!!

84 Dragoner // Mar 22, 2008 at 17:07
I dont think it was a great performance but we kept a great cleansheet against one of our SJP bogey teams and we got a vital win, Fulhams confidence is gonna be rock bottom now and i think they are going down with bolton, however, we need one more win and a draw or two before we are safe, TOON ARMY!
85 JJ // Mar 22, 2008 at 17:18
Wow every player had a good game today:
Harper - 7 (solid and great handling in slippery weather)
Beye - 7 (solid and full of energy as usual)
Taylor - 9 (absolutely fantastic today)
Faye - 7 (solid should watch his foul count)
Enrique - 8 (very good game)
Butt - 8 (excellent game and passing was very good for a change)
Barton - 8 (great game put is good tackles and drove ball forward)
Geremi - 6 (defended well but passing was off)
Martins - 8 (lively and dangerous)
Viduka - 8 (great goal and hold up play)
Owen - 6 (good goal but looked a bit lost for most of the game, linked play ok but would rather have Zog or Emre playing in the link-up role), - was very pleased with his captaincy today however so +1 for leadership = 7.
King Kev, (8), would like to have seen Oba stay on and Owen or Geremi come off but it worked out well, so well done!!!
Reckon we need four more points for safety but should really be pushing for 12th place.
86 Reb // Mar 22, 2008 at 17:29
Why say Owen should have come off? Clearly it was the right decision by Keegan, as it was Owen who got the goal that put the match away. Full credit to Keegan, I thought he had maybe got that substitution wrong but Owen got the goal to justify Keegan’s faith. Owen has been the most consistent goal-threat since January, and I think Keegan has every reason to trust Owen to score. That trust was not misplaced today, nor was it last week. Points to Keegan then, for making an unpopular, but apparently the correct, decision.
Does anyone else think that Owen and Keegan seem to have something of a mutual love club going on or something? Considering Owen’s comments in his book, I was expecting some tension but the two seem to be all “he’s the greatest” since Keegan’s arrival. I’m not complaining, it’s great to see confidence from the manager, and from the captain.
87 apan // Mar 22, 2008 at 19:23
JJ have u beeen watchin today? OWEN is an 8 or 9, his our MOM today the whole nation agreed! Taylor 9 is overated but he can get an 8, his commanding today!
