Michael Owen is starting to come of age at Newcastle as he scored another goal in Newcastle’s critical 2-0 win over Fulham yesterday.

Owen has now scored 4 goals of Newcastle’s 5 goals in the last 7 games and he talked to Sky Sports yesterday:
“You know me. You don’t make a living out of scoring goals if you miss a chance and then go hiding.”“I know there were over 50,000 people here - there could be five million here and I wouldn’t go hiding if I missed a chance.”
“You have always got to be ready for that next one and that came along in the second half and, thankfully, I put it away and it gave us a bit of breathing space.”
“We have been one up a few times over the last couple of months and it is always edgy with the situation we are in.”
“But we managed to get that cushion, and it was probably the most enjoyable eight minutes after that we have had all season.”
Newcastle United had not won a game of course since Kevin Keegan returned to St James’ Park in January. However, in the last 4 games Newcastle have shown some good form, but need to produce that more consistently if the team is to move further up the league.
Michale Owen thinks the win couldn’t have come at a better time, as he continued:
“I am delighted for everyone. When you are winning games, there is no end to it.”“You go home happy, you can go out for a meal with the wife and you can be happy.”
“For the past couple of months, you are just going home and twiddling your thumbs, watching the telly, going to bed and waking up with a sore head.”
“It has not been nice but now we can go home, be pleased with the result, pleased for the fans, the manager and the staff.”
“Everyone works so hard to get us right on match day tactically, physically, mentally and everything else - so it is good for everyone.”
Well, without getting carried away with yesterday’s result, since Fulham haven’t won an away game for 31 games running - the last win was against Newcastle - there are still definite signs that our players are gaining confidence and coming more into their own.
The defense played quite solidly yesterday, and goalkeeper Steve Harper only had a couple of long shots to save, mainly from Jimmy Bullard, who looked good.
But we should consider the last 7 games as preparation for next season and get used to the Kevin Keegan attacking type of play. The strikers seem to love it, including Mark Viduka, who has said more than once this last week how he loves playing for the new manager.
Quite a few of the Newcastle players like Carr, Cacapa, Duff, Ameobi, Ramage and Diatta will be playing for their Newcastle careers in these last few games of the season.
So they are very important games, and we are not clear of relegation yet, not by any measure.

May MO continues scoring goals for fun now as well as Viduka & Martins. Yeah Darryl i agree with you Barton has noticeably improved lately even tried a couple of shot on goal so were Butt & Geremi. Well done all.

Hanzemre Bartons shot on goal showed me that he could be our gerrard, i think he is well worth his spot in the first team…just hope he sorts out the off the pitch stuff

this is the player that will save us from relagation if him annd viduka can stay fit they can save us comfortabley i never realised owen could play in different positions i only though he could play up front but after seeing the fulham game he is very comfortable playing in midfiled or on the right he links up with the midfiled really well we should get him to link up with the midfiled all the time cause hes great at it him and viduka r a great partenership if only viduka could stay fit

perhaps a 4-3-1-2 with Owen in the 1 spot then. Against teams with good backs we’ll need to push the wings out to defend against the overlap, no? I didn’t watch the game but it sounds like one criticism was that we didn’t have much width. That’s probably fine against the likes of Fulham, but against other sides in the league that could be a real liability.
