Cacapa Injured – Who Are Our Best Central Defenders?

Tuesday March 25th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 29 Comments

It turns out that Claudio Cacapa injured his groin again on Friday, and that’s why David Edgar was on the substitutes bench on Saturday.

Claudio Cacapa - trying to get hold of Andrew Carroll in training

Keegan told the Evening Chronicle today:

“We have lost Claudio Cacapa for about five weeks,”

“He pulled his groin in training on Friday and that’s why Lamine Diatta was in the squad against Fulham on Saturday.”

One of the negatives about Claudio before he was signed from Lyon last summer, is that he’s injury prone, and this season is no exception. While he can play very well at times, such as at the Emirates against Arsenal, he’s had a couple of really poor games. Those were against Portsmouth and Aston Villa, when he looked anything but a Premiership player.

We’re not even sure that he will be at the club in August and that may well depend on how Lamine Diatta does. Newcastle will bring in at least one additional center-back in the summer, and it looks like Newcastle may go after Tottenham’s 24 year-old Michael Dawson, who can be a very good Premiership player, but had a poor game against us last year at St. James’ Park.

Assuming we need 4 top-class center-backs next season, we could end up with Taylor, Faye, Diatta and Dawson fighting it out for the two central positions.

That would leave no room for Peter Ramage and we feel he may be sold in the summer. His contract at Newcastle runs out then too, so he would become a free agent, and we’re sure Norwich would be one team in for him.

We also have 20 year-old Canadian David Edgar and 18 year-old Hungarian Tamas Kadar is also a bright prospect and both may be pushing for a first team slot sooner rather than later.

What do you think?

Who should be our four center-backs for next season?

Let us know – comments welcome.

Dawson is terrible - we should be improving the quality of the squad rather than buying second rate players - thats how we’re stuck with half the players we currently; no one will take them off our hands even on a free due to thier inflated wages

    dawson isn’t terrible at all.

he’s had a bad season, but then the whole of the spurs team was pretty awful for the first half of this season.

however, i do think we still need a leader at the back, and i don’t think dawson’s that man.

  • 7 Ashton // Mar 25, 2008 at 18:18

Dawson is crap we need a top class CB not a shiti rejected player from a shiti team like tottenham

Whats with all the support for Edgar, how often have you seen him play at centre half? or are you blinded by the fact he scored against man united. The premership is no place for 18 year old centre halfs.

Four CB’s for next year: Faye, Taylor, Kompany and Edgar! Remember Edgar and Huntington played in the hart of the defence for Roeder, and to be honest, I think they did well.

Know it probably aint gonna happen, but if Kompany was to be signed by NUFC i would be thrilled! Could be the next Albert! For all we know he may have followed The Entertainers :P

Kompany I have my doubts about him. He plays very well for HSV, but every time he has to play foir the Belgian team he makes really silly mistakes. He doesn’t reach his normal level. I have to admit that in the Belgian squad lots of players don’t get their normal level (like another name I’ve already seen here on this site is Van Buyten). To compare him with Albert that is a bit to soon he has to proove so much more to be compared to Albert.

I’ve seen Edgar, Kadar and Tozer play for the reserves a few time this season. Edgar has always been outstanding and I really think he could handle first team CB duty. Hopefully he’ll get the chance before the end of the season. Kadar, Tozer also look very promising. Dawson? I’d rather have Les Dawson!

Trivial fact…Whilst chatting to brazilian friends about Cacapa, they told me Cacapa means ’snooker pocket’…Work that one out!..

  • 14 Tom_Toon // Mar 25, 2008 at 22:57

So he should be a goalkeeper?

Is he gay? He likes balls?

    Does he wear fish nets?

    WHATTTTTTTTTTTTT!

  • 15 CJ // Mar 25, 2008 at 23:07

Dawson is a big clumsy defender who always makes mistakes i wouldprefer us sign Wes Brown on a free transfer but not if he wants 70+ grand.

  • 16 Punk Skunk // Mar 25, 2008 at 23:09

  • 23 Punk Skunk // Mar 25, 2008 at 23:25

Of course!..Anyway, i wish it meant totally excellent
    & fast defender!..

  • 24 daniel // Mar 26, 2008 at 0:26

Taylor, Faye, Diatta and Dawson 4 class center backs? I dont think so. Taylor is still learning and shouldn’t be our number one choice, plus he makes too many mistakes. Faye looks solid at times but is not a class act, Diatta was free and hasn’t played premiership football and Dawson is shit!

  • 25 m. // Mar 26, 2008 at 2:19

i’m from brazil, and that’s true about claudio’s name - means snooker pocket

  • 26 m. // Mar 26, 2008 at 2:20

hey punk skunk, how are the subcultures in Newcastle?

i’ve been over there 2 years ago, for a small english course, and knew nothing about this

  • 27 Knightbobmoncur // Mar 26, 2008 at 8:58

Well Cacapa certainly isnt one of them!!
In fact, I would go as far as say Cacapa is low on the list of decent defenders at NUFC and that is saying something. Before him i would put in order best first Faye / Beye / Taylor / Edgar / Ramage / Cacapa.

Reasoning, none of his predecessors would get shrugged off the ball half as easy as him, and for a centre half, that has to be the cardinal sin………….

Managers watched the Portsmouth game and said, target Cacapa, he folds like a dec of cards!!!!

    Tis true!!!!

  • 28 Johann // Mar 26, 2008 at 12:32

    Taylor, Edgar, Faye, ?

  • 29 Scott Hodge // Mar 26, 2008 at 18:02

Just to let you know Paul, Edgar is 21 in a couple of months time not 18. I think a few of us like Nick Dryden who give positive comments about the lad watch the reserve home games where he has done an outstanding job marking the likes of Mpenza, Mendietta, Gong Dook Lee to name a few but I agree he is still inexperienced but he deserves a chance !
