Ameobi Opts For Stoke City on Loan

As we had reported earlier today Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi has opted to join Stoke City on loan for the remainder of the season.

Both Norwich and Ipswich were also interested in signing the 26 year-old before the emergency loan deadline expired today.

Norwich City and former Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder recently signed Maceo Rigters from Blackburn Rovers, but he may still be interested in acquiring the 6′2″ Ameobi in the summer, since he is a big fan of the Nigerian born player.

But this will put Stoke City in the driver’s seat for capturing Ameobi in the summer, since it is almost certain he has played his last game for his home town club.

Ameobi always promised to be a big player at Newcastle, but has never fulfilled his early promise. He played for Newcastle United 168 times and scored 28 goals and came through Newcastle’s youth system, having moved to Newcastle when he was 9 years old from Zaria, Nigeria, his birthplace. He played for the England Under-21 side 20 times and bagged 7 goals.

We wish Shola the very best of luck in his loan spell, and it wouldn’t surprise us in the least, if he starts to bang in some goals for the Potters before the end of the season.

Good luck Shola. Always been one of my favorites - I just wish he could have performed a bit better on the first team. I’m sure he’ll soar at Stoke - and if he gets sold over the summer we might be playing against him next season - in the Premiership!

Never given a decent run in the 1st team as a starter on a regular basis - and remember he played through an injury for the best part of 2 years for the club - how many modern day pro’s would do that.

I hope you help Stoke get promoted and can play some part against us next year (presuming we dont pass them on the way down…)

Ameobi was always going to be one of those players where he could have 4 good performances and then 1 poor one the fans would be asking for his head. Whereas other players eg Martins could have 4 poor games and then 1 good one and the fans would be in raptures. Shola will be better off away from Newcastle as most fans don’t give him the lickings of a dog!

I dont think this is definately finito because if Shola scores a few and finds his feet again he may come back at the end of his loan.

I would prefer Shola to Smith any day of the week, he has made some very telling contributions over the years and gets a raw deal on his site.

What happened to that Shola with the tricky dribbling that ran rings around Barca in the Nou Camp and scored a brace against Leverkusen in the champions league?

He now looks like a crouch type target man with no ability other than having long diagonal balls punted at him, Real shame and one last thing on Shola despite everyone saying he never tried, He deserves Credit for the way he played for about 9 months with a career threatening injury and helped us into Europe with some important goals at the back end of 05-06 and then 2 goals in the Inter toto Cup final against Lillestrom.

I really really wanted him to do well - a local boy (well almost), home grown and with bags of potential.
..but someone got to him - someone told him he was already a star and he stopped trying. He picked up Shearers arrogance before he earned it and threw away all the potential in a flurry of niggly fouls, pointless handballs, and incompetent offsides - the boy stopped trying.

Maybe this will wake him up … would like to see the boy do good- he could if he really really wanted to…..

What a pity. Wish he could have made it for us. All the best Shola and hope it works for you. Anyway you are still one of ours. After all you are only on loan. Still would have played you instead of Viduka and Smith! Still think KK could have done more with you. Hope to see you in the stripes again one day.
