Praise For Young David Edgar

Saturday April 5th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 40 Comments

Kevin Keegan had some praise for 20 year old Canadian David Edgar, who played well after a bit of a shaky start this afternoon against Reading.

David Edgar - had a solid game today

We thought David was a little nervous in the first 20 minutes of the game, and he made a couple of poor tackles on Stephen Hunt on the left wing, and gave away two dangerous free kicks early in the game.

But once he settled down he played very well and took no chances, as he formed a good partnership with the impressive Abdoulaye Faye.

Kevin talked about David after the game:

“Tayls came in with a virus and we took him out on the pitch but it was obvious he was too weak to play in a game like this.”“But there were no problems putting David Edgar in.”

“He tried to win a couple of balls that Franz Beckenbauer in his prime wouldn’t have won, but the longer the game went on the more assured he looked.”

“He’s been terrific since I’ve been here. He’s captained the Reserves, and I felt he deserved his chance.”

We think David has a promising future at the club, and to come in to today’s game on short notice and play so well, augers well for the temperament of the boy.

He’s captained the Reserves all season and looks a good no nonsense center-back who can also play in either full back position. We see him getting more games next season, as he works his way up the pecking order at the club.

Comments welcome.

I would like KK to blood even more young players in the final few games, now that fear of relegation has almost vanished.

As a fellow Canadian i’m glad to see Edgar out there starting a game for the Toon. He played very solid after the first couple fouls to start the game, and filled in the gap left by Taylor very nicely!

yeah lua lua triosi carroll edgar kadar tozer

all players which i really think will get a chance now for the rest of the season

Yep he did well overall. Mind if Joe Harvey was still manager, he’d order him to “drink stout” to fill him out a bit - just like he did with Stewart Barrowclough :o)

Ho’way Edgar, show the other young ‘uns the way…Well done!..

We need to make sure we beat Sunderland, but apart from that I would have no problem in blooding the youngsters. Edgar did well today and I’m surprised Carroll didn’t get on.

Also Fabio Zamblera scored his first goal today for the under 18s, hopefully the first of many he’ll net in black and white.

Finally was Mike Ashley at the game today? Didn’t see him alongside Mort and Wise.

Why don’t we just beat the mackems with the kids!

This is the new Kevin Keegan era!

Its like going back in time!!!

I think that this 3 game winning streak and the fantastic performances we have put in will continue as long as the king is at the helm!!!

    LONG LIVE THE KING!!!! :)

UTD111 - I would suggest that if it was stout that made Stuart Barrowclough the best hitter of a full-back in the old first division then that’s the last thing we should want KK to do with Edgar!

  • 12 ronaldeano // Apr 5, 2008 at 20:13

Should Steven Taylor ever be allowed to play for this club again after storming out the ground when he learned he was dropped today?

There’s a bit of healthy debate for you.

Today is the 28th anniversary of the last time we lost on queerside, It will be 29 next year because KK is going to have some team behind him next season, And he will stick his fingers at Andy Dunn, Steven Howard and every other upper class tit in the papers.

Did anyone see the Sun today Greaves is now saying Wenger should be sacked, What a knob

  • 21 ronaldeano // Apr 5, 2008 at 21:01

  • 23 CRAIGG // Apr 5, 2008 at 21:06

Is think its now or Spyro or Petes Dragon or Puff the magic dragon who knows.

To be fair sometimes he does speak the slightest bit of sense not as bad as Michael he is annoying and he is praising KK after all the shit he threw at Me for sticking up for the great man calling me deluded and idiotic, Mickey where have those days gone.

oooohhhh happy days, premier league next year. the prodical son is back, a new 2/3 prodical sons in the making, OBA, MO, AND BARTON! looooads of money to spend, great supporters, rid of fat spit the dog sham, and i am also happy with our goal differance declining, couple of weeks ago it was -26 now -17. ideal. that was bollocks about taylor storming out the ground, all we need to do now is sort tayls and oba’s contracts, also give captain fantastic a new one. i honestly think we will win fa or carling cup next year. Walking in a keegan wonderland!

is that true about taylor storming out after finding out he couldnt play? i think he was probably told he had to go home but he wanted to watch the match, but was told he was too ill and should be in bed, hence the storming…

two sides to a coin remember

  • 35 ScottyT // Apr 6, 2008 at 2:44

like a say great to see edgar gettin his chance. thought he did resonably well but agree with you ed about the shaky start. made a few mistakes but im sure he will get better as he gets more games for the 1st team. still though solid performance. i still rate him well.

  • 36 nikki // Apr 6, 2008 at 5:06

all i can say is tht if steven taylor did really storm out of ground then at least it shows hes commited enough to be pissed off when he cant play for the toon. i want our players to be like tht, if they cant play then they shouldnt be happy, thy should hav something to say and should strive to get themselves back into the team. imo it just shows passion and commitment if steven taylor did storm out and id like to see more players showing tht kind of passion

  • 37 hanzemre // Apr 6, 2008 at 9:19

yesterday’s performance was overall good. Just show the quality of other top PL teams which still winning a game though not at their best. May it continues as long as KK is at the helm! LONG LIVE KING KEV!!!!

yeah am agree that he’s on his track to complete his unfinished business & achieve something by winning a trophy or 2 this time around. No doubt! Just enjoy it!

  • 38 nufc1111 // Apr 6, 2008 at 11:08

Edgar was fantastic really looked comfortable out there good performance from him and Beye was out of this world fantastic game!! Best signing from Big Sam

  • 39 Scott Hodge // Apr 6, 2008 at 11:49

Really happy for Edgar getting his chance. I could see on his face he was nervous and he gave two free kicks away early on but its not as if he was taking people down in the box, handling or shirt pulling etc, what defender hasnt give away free kicks? Dont forget he hasnt played a full first team game since, was it the Man Utd game over a year ago? Both games he didnt find out he was playing until near kick off so surely we can allow for a bit of nerves. I thought he did a great job at CB and received good cover from Faye. Beye was my MOTM, great performance. I received a call just before kick off saying that Taylor DID storm out of the ground, why I dont know. I hope the fans liked the look of Edgar because I heard he is keen to extend his contract when it expires next year !!

  • 40 briss264 // Apr 6, 2008 at 20:45

Edgar did well overall misjudged a ball or two but recovered just in the nick of time. I’m not sure he could face Rooney or adobeyor 1 v 1 but he looks like he has the potential to be class. Hope he extends for a multi-year contract!
