Newcastle Pursue Deco For The Summer

April 6th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 53 Comments

The local Sunday Sun is reporting today that Newcastle United are preparing a £15M summer swoop for 30 year-old Barcelona star Deco.

Deco - Kevin Keegan keen to bring midfielder to Tyneside

Apparently the Tyneside club have also identified fellow Portuguese international 21 year-old Joao Moutinho, as an alternative midfield target if their bid for Deco fails. But Moutinho would cost a lot more than £15M if we were to get him from Sporting Lisbon.

The Sunday Sun reveals this morning a Newcastle delegation has already met with the Brazilian-born 30-year-old’s agent, Jorge Mendes, in the last couple of weeks. And the news is that they have not been dissuaded from testing Barcelona’s resolve to hang on to a player who is no longer a starter for them, but is still a great little player.

Deco has started only half of Barcelona’s league games this season and has publicly wondered about his future at Barcelona over the last year. Newcastle were linked with a move for Deco last summer but nothing ever materialized.

Newcastle are also said to be willing to pay big bucks to the Portuguese International, and are willing to go to £100K- a-week. They will need to do something like that to persuade the player to come to Tyneside, since we can offer no European football next season. Chelsea and Tottenham are also tracking the player, and of course they can both offer him European football next season.

We think 21 year-old Moutinho would be a better long term buy for the club, and Kevin was at Ibrox on Thursday night to watch him play for Sporting Lisbon against Rangers. Of course w’ve already been linked with quite a few players on show during that game so we’re not really sure which ones Kevin really likes.

Moutinho would cost a lot more than the £15M required to bring Deco to Tyneside. He doesn’t turn 22 year-old until September. yet he has already played 171 times for Sporting Lisbon and scored 15 goals and has represented Portugal 11 times.

If Joao did become available there would be a big scramble from the big English clubs for his signature, and we wouldn’t stand much of a chance to sign him.

We’ll have to go one step at a time and maybe the season after next, when hopefully we’ll be able to offer European football, we’ll be able to attract more players to the club. If we can get Deco that would be a good start to our summer transfers. Deco has played for Portugal 51 times and scored 3 times.

Comments welcome.

    Er, this is utter tosh.

    £15m for a 30 year old midfielder?

    I don’t thimk so

  • 2 iain // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:13

still cant believe moutinho hasnt moved to a bigger league.

like huntelaar hes a player who looked destined for greatness the first time i ever saw him play vs us in the uefa cup.

the two things we can offer players though are wages that match pretty much anyone in the league and better most of the rest and regular 1st team football.

  • 3 Nomis_jade // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:14

Deco would e good, but surely for 15 million there are other younger players we could get. That Arshavin for example looks good, or add 5 more million and we could possibly get diego, who is class and better that deco.
But definately more like the players we should be linked with.

Iknow its dreaming, but the player to fill nicky butts boots is Daniel de Rossi from roma. We will never get him, ever, ever, but like i said thats my dream sighning for that position.

  • 4 rutehh8 // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:22

deco is good … but is he worth 15 Mill as 30 year old midfielder ??? he definatly has the skill and without a doubt would be a great addition to our squad, but he wouldnt be worth the money in the end. joao mountinho is a dream player in my mind… if we could sign him

  • 5 craig chisholm // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:25

load of shit. 15 million for a bloke that will soon be 31. his best years are just behind him. maybe 5 million or something like that, the bloke has no long term future left in his legs. more crap from the tabloids!!

  • 6 scott9 // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:29

i would much rather have moutinho he would be an outstanding buy he is exackly wot we need i would love deco mind but i dont think we will get either

  • 7 rutehh8 // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:31

    @Nomis_jade
diego would be a fantastic addition for us ;) i’d love to see him playing for us

  • 8 Spyro // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:36

this is rubbish, 15 mill for deco and if we fail THEN we go for Moutinho??? thats just odd. Why would the younger player with a bright future be our SECOND option? lol

Also i do not think Moutinho would cost more than 15mill

  • 9 Zx // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:38

So that’s the market rate these days?

Deco at 30 yo at 15m.

  • 10 scottish mag // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:39

get them both lol deco, moutinho, and carrick in mid with owen martins and viduka att but also get some other quality striker so we can swap it about lol get rid of ameobi, carr.

do u lot think n’zogbia for aaron lennon would be a good deal heard that it could be on the cards

  • 11 Tom_Toon // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:39

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

When i watch Portugal i cant actually believe how shite Deco has been, honestly he has been so bad for us.

  • 12 Hadji // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:39

Mike Ashley is not stupid he knows that he can bring that money back in 2 months from shirt sales.Smart marketing move

  • 13 Spyro // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:44

no scottish mag i dont, i would much rather zoggy to lennon, he is my favourite player, but its sounding like he is not happyand its probably the best deal we can do with tottenham as they need more competition for their left wing and we need more competition for our right.

I wouldnt mind a taarabt swap for zoggy though, can play left, right and central

  • 14 Shaz // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:47

Take it from someone who has watched barcelona all season, Deco has been very poor. One of their worst players.Even at £5 m i would think that it is a big mistake. The guy is a luxury player who has struggled for form and fitness all season. If he comes to Newcastle it will be for a large pay day before he retires.Don’t do it KK

  • 15 Newcastle United. // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:49

Great, Another player past it. Typical Newcastle.

  • 16 scottish mag // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:51

yeah spyro i think lennon is ok but no end product

taarabt would be gd he is quick and tricky if keegan can get him under his wing he could be quality in a couple of years

and shaz maybe deco isnt playing well because he feels he isnt wanted KK willl get the best out of him again and when he sees the nufc fans he’ll soon be back to his best

  • 17 YongMalaysia // Apr 6, 2008 at 12:59

r u joking? 15mill for Deco? no plz…. i rather than go for youngster and giv them play 1-2 season, then 3rd-4th season we can aim for top 6. (Example Arsenal) By the time we can aim for League Cup or FA Cup.

  • 18 Dom4Toon // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:00

Tom_Toon, why do u actually support portugal?

  • 19 hanzemre // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:01

    suppose

  • 20 Tom_Toon // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:03

because im half portuguese, and chose to support them over england.

  • 21 Hadji // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:04

For 15 mill you can get 3 top players and much younger ones.
    Arshavin-8 mill
    Barnes-4 mill
    Sidwell-3 mill

  • 22 scottish mag // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:08

barnes is too injury prone but sidwell and arshavin would be gd

  • 23 Leo // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:08

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    PLEASE DO NOT SIGN DECO

joao would be much better for value’s sake and quality 100%

  • 24 Spyro // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:09

Hadji doesnt the fact that Barnes’ is looking pretty injury prone put you off him a bit? and after putting some thought into it i have decided to say “F**K Sidwell” the money grabbing little prat chose to play bench warmer over us so i dont want him. I still think we can do better than Arshavin, Zarate can play the same positions as him. RM, AM, ST

  • 25 Leo // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:10

yeah hadji is right, get 3 players who are better than him for the price of him

plus the wages would be the same overall haha

  • 26 Tom_Toon // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:12

Wouldnt call Barnes and Sidwell anywhere near top!

    My 5 would be:

    Cuellar - CB - 5 mil
    Roberto Hilbert - RB/RM - 8 mil
    Veloso - CDM/LB - 14 mil
    Arshavin - CAM - 8 mil
    Cisse - ST - 8 mil

43 mil :o With a few outgoings maybe take it down to 35 mil.

  • 27 Spyro // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:17

there is just something about seeing other peoples wish list that just makes me want to put my own :D

    Adriano- RB/RM/LB/LM - 10 mil
    Veloso - CDM/CM/LB - 13 mil
    Zarate - AM/RM/ST - 14 mil
    Cisse - ST - 8 mil

    45million well spent

  • 28 Hadji // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:17

Dont make me put my list with 43 mill available.

  • 29 Spyro // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:18

go on hadj you might aswell lol

  • 30 Spyro // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:21

did anyone read the article that sunderland might land mcgeady? ridiculous

  • 31 Charlie Bucket // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:26

    haha. Deco. No thanks

  • 32 cloudstrife // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:31

we need some hungry players. Deco is definitely on the market as Barca are preparing a clear out. but i wouldnt touch him as he’s just after the cash and it’s highly unlikely he’ll have an Indian summer.

give me Arshavin in his position anyday. and if we’re going for Barca players, we can have a look at Giovanni. might just be tempted to leave the Nou Camp.

  • 33 Toonlad // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:38

Don’t think Kevin should “have a Deco” at this one. At 30 years of age? I wouldn’t think so.

  • 34 Hadji // Apr 6, 2008 at 13:49

    O K if you insist
    Arshavin-8
    Pandev-12
    Kallstrom-10
    Cortes(Getafe)-3
    Garay-9
    Dede-7

  • 35 BigB // Apr 6, 2008 at 14:09

Deco—to old….has not played good in Laliga and in the national team…..

Joao M.—to small and not stong enough for the PL…cry baby

  • 36 Nev // Apr 6, 2008 at 14:51

    £15mil and £100k a week for a past it 30 year old ?

    maybe 3 years ago!

prefer a younger player for half as much a transfer fee and quater the wages!

  • 37 Nasty // Apr 6, 2008 at 15:21

Deco is too old, I don’t doubt that KK would get the best out of him but it would be dead money as we could not sell him on for much.

    I would go for

Daniel De Rossi / Gattuso - old but is solid and plays with passion, would be cheap
    Diego Capel
    Thierry Henry/Ronaldhino - seriously
    Patrick Viera
    Sol Campbell

  • 38 Swanx // Apr 6, 2008 at 15:42

15 mil for a 30 year old. I hope this is just paper talk and not the real deal.

  • 39 Bill F // Apr 6, 2008 at 16:25

If we get an oldie I would rather have Juninho, be a lot cheaper.
Never been a Deco fan even when he was younger. Waste of money for me.

  • 40 scottish mag // Apr 6, 2008 at 16:37

nasty u say deco is too old but henry viera and campbell are all in their thirties too

  • 41 Hadji // Apr 6, 2008 at 17:12

Nasty….You have more chances of buying Rosela Sensi for your private parties than buying De Rosi :-)

  • 42 Grzegorz BrzÄ™czyszczykiewicz // Apr 6, 2008 at 17:57

would be nice but we should reach for player with future like
Veloso. Moutinho, Nasri, Garay, M. Richards etc.

  • 43 gonufc // Apr 6, 2008 at 18:00

please no! I’m glad i’m not the only one really annoyed about this. He’s been getting worse and worse over this and last season for barca, and i expect he’d perform worse in our team.

As everyone seems to be having a go, here’s my list:

    Diego- 20m/ Bentley- 13m
    Mcgeady- 12m
    Gomis- 10m

Not really sure about defenders though, tough seeing who could be available, young (ish) and good.

Expecting N’Zogbia, Emre, Ameobi and Carr to be off. (And Smith but that’s wishful thinking)

  • 44 vEn`SG // Apr 6, 2008 at 18:16

15mil for deco…hmm……too pricey for his age.
i’ll only be excited if its 15mil for zidane…

zidane is master class even at 30..

  • 45 Oga // Apr 6, 2008 at 19:24

No way! We need hungry players!

He’s just looking for his last pay day!

  • 46 Obafan // Apr 6, 2008 at 20:14

Funny Newcastle looks safe and now all of the sudden 3 names are published in the papers as possible targets for next season. Especially cause the board has stated that new players will be discussed after NUFC is 100% safe (and that is not the case; it only is 95%).
So for me it all is paper talk.

I would only say that I really hope that KK has seen the things of Arshavin, cause he would really add something to our team. If we could get him, that could be one of the best transfers the club has done in the last couple of years!!!

  • 47 Ross // Apr 6, 2008 at 21:21

if deco is worth 15 million, at 30 years old, then what are players like michael carrick worth?

if thats the price rate we’d be paying 40 million for moutinho. complete rubbish.

i dont think moutinho would be much more than 15 million, i think 15 million or around about there would do it. if i was given the option, i’d say we’d be simply idiotic not to take the far younger, talented player, for a mere few more million.

    paper tosh.

  • 48 Toooooooooooooooooon // Apr 7, 2008 at 1:01

i rather we go for jimmy bullard than deco…at least he is cheaper, younger and got premiership experience

  • 49 moomfan // Apr 7, 2008 at 5:16

walcot, carrick, hargreaves, couch, and a couple of eastern european fullbacks in the mold of vidic. that is what we need in the summer.

  • 50 Jinal // Apr 7, 2008 at 8:21

I am not English but I would prefer if Newcastle sought more English talent. They are the ones who will most likely play for the shirt, and I don’t want our team to turn into another Arsenal/Chelsea/Man Utd.

  • 51 elfer // Apr 7, 2008 at 8:52

what did EMINEM say about MOBY: “You’re too old, let go, it’s over” ;-)

  • 52 Tom from Aus // Apr 7, 2008 at 9:20

the only worry of buying deco is that he might under perform or get injured. What a waste of money that would be.

  • 53 Stami - PLAY CARROLL // Apr 7, 2008 at 9:54

15 mil for a 30 year old midfielder who is running out of steam and has never played in the Premier league…RUBBISH!!!
