Kevin Keegan thinks the time he arrived back at Newcastle United in January, was just perfect in terms of being able to learn about the Newcastle squad he inherited.

Kevin Keegan - with right hand man Terry McDermott
Keegan told Newcastle World TV today:
“It’s been a great time for me to come in terms of learning things,” “We’ve had big games and games that matter and I’ve found out a lot about my players.”
“We have got a small squad, no-one can argue with that, and yet the players are now starting to say, ‘You don’t need to buy anyone for my position because I’m good enough play here’.”
Many fans would still like to see around 5 new players in the summer but Keegan insists it will be more of a case of evolution with the Newcastle maestro targeting three or four additions to the squad.
Kevin continued:
“The good news for the owner is that while we might want to spend big money on a few players, we don’t want to bring nine in like they did last year,”
“I think we will get three or four quality players and maybe one or two youngsters who can push them from day one.”
“That’s the idea but we’ll have to see how it works out.”
That sounds just great to us, because one advantage is it will not take time for these players to settle in at the club, and we can concentrate on winning games from our very first fixture.
Four top players for say £40M would be great, and we’ll also be able to reduce the wage bill by letting Rozehnal, Ameobi, Carr and perhaps Ramage to move on. If Charles N’Zogbia wants to move on, we could recuperate £10M and should be able to get at least £3M for Shola, especially if Stoke City get promoted.
Roll on the summer.
Comments always welcome.

ed loving the pictures at the side of the page with the lil captions gave me a giggle.
3 or 4 players 1 or 2 players 4 or 5 players…
its almost as confusing as obafemi’s real age, only kidding.
we need 4 minimum i think with atleast 2 youngster central midfielders also

Greg. N’Zogbia is one of the best prospects in Europe. French under 21, 1st team regular, touted by Wenger as being a great player.
£10m is the least I’d take considering he signed a 5 year deal commiting himself to the toon this season.
5 faustino // Apr 9, 2008 at 12:58
I beleie he’s in contract Greg; meaning someone is going to have to pay over the odds or he ain’t going anywhere.

The Indomitable Magpie
Having being stripped of the captaincy but restored to a regular first team berth under Kevin Keegan, our match record with Geremi continues to be worthy of note.
We originally wrote a piece when he was away on African Nations Cup duty with Cameroon (aka the Indomitable Lions) earlier in 2008, but his stats remain worthy of note.
Looking at Premier League games only, Geremi has started all ten of our victories this season and four draws, as well as appearing from the bench in one other draw.
Without him on the field, we’ve won just three points of the 38 collected so far this season - from three draws.
7 Davies // Apr 9, 2008 at 12:59
Loving it at the moment. We don’t really need much in terms of new additions because everyone seems to be finding their feet very nicely.
Perhaps we could do with some cover at left back, just in case anything happens to wor Jose. I also think we’ll need cover for the left wing if Zog’s off, but we have some good adaptable players that can make do otherwise.
I suppose the acid test about the team will come on Saturday when we’re likely to go back to 4-4-2. Which striker to leave on the bench………
8 sam gardner // Apr 9, 2008 at 13:02
nzogbia is a class player he is one of the best little wingers in the prem if he plays consider selling him is a big no for me but f keegan did sell which would be daft take well more then 10 m
9 Hadji // Apr 9, 2008 at 13:14
I think selling Zoggy would be a huge mistake especially if we start using 4-4-2 formation which we will. But it all depends…if we get Reyes then Zoggy in my view would have to satisfy as a back up player.Personally…we need him for next season.
Can someone get him a girlfriend who can tie his butt to Newcastle and stop him to think about London. From what i know, there are some beautiful girls overthere. Can’t wait to go there.
South Shields here i come.

1 more season out of Viduka?
1 more season out of Butt?
1 more season out of Given?
1-2 more season out of Harper?
1-2 more season out of Cacapa?
1-2 more season out of Geremi?
1-2 more season out of Beye?
1-2 more season out of Faye?
Any other 30 somethings?
I think Newcastle need to concentrate their efforts on young talent, as they’re doing. However, we also need a couple of younger 20’s for continuity after next season and that’s what I think KK & the gang will be doing.
11 Bill F // Apr 9, 2008 at 13:32
Aha the Darwin approach, perhaps KK could approach the University, I believe they have a good genetics dept. Or even the Frankenstien option. If we put Viduka’s brain into Carrols body, transfer Smiths committment into Nzogbia, there must be a stack of permutations.
Any other ideas?

15 Greg P // Apr 9, 2008 at 13:44
Here’s my shopping list…
Centre Half - perhaps Richard Dunne (£5m)
Replacement for Butt - no idea who but someone who is a grafter (£5-8m?)
Solid central midfielder to replace Emre who I think will leave, perhaps Sidwell (£6m)
Replacement for Viduka - Crouch (£10m)
Those are key, and then perhaps Riise (£6m) as well as Wes Brown (Free) would offer experience and value. The back that up with youngsters like Barnes (£8m) and then cheaper young gambles for £1-2m.
I know thats about £47m, but if we can ship out Emre (£5m), Ramage (£1m), Ameobi (£3m) and unfortunately Zog (£10m to spurs) (and if we can shift Smith and Carr possibly a bit more cash), then it would be a good value outlay of £28m for a really strong squad.
No big names, but realistic targets with experience who would improve the side.

Crouch
Cambiasso
Wendell

VanBommel
Schweinstieger
Gomis
De Rossi

Arshavin
Got plenty more but I reckon they will do for starters and I havn’t listed them in order of preference apart from Crouch who would be no. 1 on my list.
18 HeronMag // Apr 9, 2008 at 13:52
2 CBs - Van Buyten and Dunne/Metzelder (RB option)
LB - Bridge
RW - S Wright-Phillips
LW - McGeady (if he’s as good as people say)
AM - Barnes/Arshavin
CF - Gomis/Ashton
I don’t think any of these are unrealistic targets.

see with real zaragoza in the relegation zone in la liga why dont we try to get diego milito he scored loads last season and has 15 this season
also pablo aimar and diogo would be good signins from them, defo think metzelder would be great signing as well as that boussoufa looks like having world class potential
20 NUFCFAN // Apr 9, 2008 at 14:00
Big centre back
Veloso
moatinho
bentley
capel - if we got rid of nzogbia
not to bothered about another striker think we have enough and really keen to see carrol given more of a chance. Unless there was an amzing oppertunity to take a great one
That would give us a great young midfield for the better half of a decade.

am/aimar 8m or arshavin 7m
st/diego milito 15m or gomis 10m
also that young boussoufa would be quality
27 Guinea Mag // Apr 9, 2008 at 14:53
As stated already, the existing squad is too small so when we allow Carr, Rozenahll, Ameobio and maybe Cacapa/Emre/Zog to leave, we need replacements as well as the 4 to 5 class players to improve the squad.
Let’s not fool ourselves that the current team is good despite winning three consecutive games. There is the basis for a decent team that will stay in the PL under KK, but Newcastle United are bigger and better than that.
Not sure who we should buy, but need a big international class central defender (Metzelder/Van Buylen/Diston), big central midfield player (Carrick) and would love to see any of Arshavin, Bentley and Henry wearing black and white shirts.
Important we continue to buy the best youngsters around as Given, Butt, Geremi, Viduka, Beye and Faye will not last too much longer….
28 Bill F // Apr 9, 2008 at 14:55
I still think that Duff would be worth trying in the LB spot if Enrique (god forbid) was injured. Could save us a pile of dosh for other players.

Arshavin, Pandev, Tymoschuk, Van Der Vaart, Ribery…& Metzelder would be good!..Maybe Barnes!..
30 Jonny // Apr 9, 2008 at 15:01
Yeah Bill F it might be a wishlist but i coudn’t see us getting half of the players on there, cambiasso an inter milan regular would not even consider us , nor would di natale or Schweinstieger - they are all world class players and way out of our league. As for Arshavin, he would be ideal for us but i cant help feeling that if one big club comes in for him which is very likely we won’t stand a chance to be honest - its gonna be a couple of seasons before we have a hope of luring big, big names to the club.

32 Gooderz // Apr 9, 2008 at 15:09
We can’t go for both van der vaart and Diego, but one isn’t completely out of the question as one of them will miss out on the Champions League next season and if a massive club doesn’t move for them then we have a chance.
Boussoufa looks good too. He’s not afraid to take on players, no matter what their size. He does go down a little easy, but he is a speedy midget (that’s not an insult, I’m the same height as him) so he’s not going to be bullying people off the ball all too often.
33 Aussie Toon // Apr 9, 2008 at 15:10
Keegan will sign 3 players valued around 5 million each and a SUPERSTAR. We all know King Kev and somebody is coming but who
34 Whumpie // Apr 9, 2008 at 15:12
There are an awful lot of names being thrown in here who have no knowledge of premier league football, no English language, and no particular reason to have any passion for the club. There’s always the chance that they’ll be bruisophobic nancies like Viana or Luque.
Personally I’d far rather see Brits in there - people like Carrick and Shorey. They may not sell as many shirts, but they’ll do a job for us right from the off. And if the FA does bring in a quota system, we’ll be better off than most.
The exception could be just one outrageous signing - probably the creative midfielder - who sells loads of shirts and helps promote the club in the international arena. That’s the kind of thing Ashley will have an eye on.
35 HeronMag // Apr 9, 2008 at 15:18
I agree Whumpie. That’s why I had 6 Brits (included Irish Dunne in that) in my list. But Brits don’t go cheap, especially English lads.

Apart from a new Phillipe Albert, that midfield engineroom put yer foot in take charge (best examples Keane,Bremner,Makalele) guy is the missing link.

Also how about another playmaking attacking inside forward, Arshevin? McGeady?and lets have both Brown and Bridge as backs and oh!

39 Reb // Apr 9, 2008 at 16:14
If Keegan is only bringing in 4-5 players, I’d think he’d not want to sell very many — the squad is very thin. Without selling ANYONE, I think the squad needs an LB (cover), an RB (cover), a DM (Butt ain’t getting any younger), a good CM (Barton’s looking promising, but if we want 4-4-2 as an option needs cover there), and a new left winger — plus likely a fourth striker (Smith isn’t it) for cover there as well, in Viduka’s mold. That’s six, just to have sufficient cover. Now, Carroll MAY be getting to the point of being cover for the strikers. So that’s five new players, without selling anyone.
40 Punk Skunk // Apr 9, 2008 at 16:16
If someone really wants Zog they’ll easily pay £10m+, he’s played in the premiership for a few years now, hence, he’s almost an english player, hence, big bucks!..

summer possibilities:
wes brown or metzelder- both are upgrades on current options, but again, are they going to come here…
8 million for giles barnes is ridiculous…he’s a bright talent but on his second knee op and not even 20…at 2-3 million yes, at 8 million ashley is better of buying me a set of new legs
Diogo RB from zaragoza…excellent choice, younger than beye (who i rate)strong and fast…may not like the weather…throws a mean right hook as well, ask sevilla
Kompany or de jong from hamburg…they’ll be playing Champs lg next year so tough to say if theyll leave

4 or 5 players to add and a couple of youngsters. Well that again is a good prospect KK is having.
Here is my go (wont mention any price cause I really have no clue about that):
CB: Campbell (getting older but still the man who could lead our defence very strongly)
LB: Dante (Standard; can also play as CB)
CDM: Veloso (young player with a great future, but it will be very hard to get him)
CAM / RW: Arshavin (we must go ASAP after him, cause it won’t take too long till the big clubs will go after him)
ST: Gomis (to fight for a spot in the team with the Dukes; he is young ans has lots of talent)
LW: Reyes (don’t know that McGeady so can’t judge him)
+ 1 or 2 younger talents (like KK mentionned)
Out:
Carr (Geremi can cover Beye as RB and is my prefered RW)
Ramage (Championship player)
Ameobi (never took one of his many chances)
Smith (if one needs to go for me than it is Smith)
N’Zogbia
My squad (31 players without most of the young talents) for next season
K: Given / Harper / Krul /Forster
RB: Beye / Geremi / (Taylor)
CB: Campbell / Taylor / Diatta / Faye / Cacapa / (Edgar)
LB: Enrique / Dante / Edgar / (Kadar)
RW: Geremi / Arshavin / Milner / LuaLua
CDM: Butt / Veloso / Faye / Barton
LW: Reyes / Duff / Milner
CAM : Arshavin / Emre / Barton
ST: Martins / Owen / Viduka / Gomis / Carrol
KK will have lots of options to pick his team; Able to play 4-3-3 or 4-4-2. I’ve put some players on different positions because they can play at other postions. If this was the squad for next year I would be very pleased!!!

geremi as the preferred rm, with whats on offer i wouldnt even choose him, the amount of crosses and corners he has absolutely been dreadful at has been shocking…for every one there seems to be ten that hit the first defender…i’m sorry but personally I would be very dissapointed if that was our MF next year…no pace at all…
arshavin yes, but well have to pay big $ as he’s in the shop window for all to see…
butt can go for me or serve as deep cover…thanks nick
veloso , yes please
dante i know nothing of…what can you offer…

ToonVol - Beye plays even better with Geremi than with Milner in front of him. Geremi is playing very good and if you say his crosses are bad, hat do you say about the crosses of Milner.
Dante is strong in the air and as Brazilian defender he knows how to launch an attack. His positional play is also very strong.
I thought Reyes played not bad as Arsenal player. Do you have another suggestion???
I did not say that the order in which I put the players is the order in which they should be chosen to play.
61 ToonVol // Apr 9, 2008 at 21:39
obafan-
beye and geremi have worked well of late…geremi tucked a bit more inside and beye free to get down the flank…i like that and geremi has been solid the last 4,( well, they all have been havent they?)…milner’s crosses have been sketchy as well, but i rate him over geremi as wing player, more of a threat with the ball, better dribbler, more technique, more pace …i think geremi is benefiting from the formation currently and going forward i want us to upgrade at all positions, that includes milner’s spot,he is ideal as the first choice off the bench at RM with the start sprinkled in…
geremi is excellent cover at rm, rb and cm…our captain under big sam though? worst decision i have ever seen by a manager… he’s an ex Boro player and a chelsea reject who signs on a free, isnt english and is handed the captaincy…it was a headline from the Onion wasnt it? for this alone sam should have been sacked…
reyes you have no chance of convincing me on….wouldnt take him on a free if i managed aldershot
dante …does he qualify for a work permit?
i’ve proposed a few players above who i felt were realistic targets( maybe on the other post) but this converstaion is surely a work in progress…

Quality Center half
Another DM to replace Butt
A right Winger to give Milner some competition
And a playmaker for obvious reasons…
Riise (6m), Mertsacker (8-10m), McGeady (11m), Veloso (12), Pandev (10) or Ashravin (8).
That’s about 47m…Cashley, show us what u got.
That’s 5 quality players with little risk that are young that would absolutely transform us
65 Obafan // Apr 10, 2008 at 13:23
ToonVol - Work permitfor Dante I don’t know for sure, but I think he might get one. He would also not cost as much as Riise.
Geremi is a very intelligent player; he will always try to find the easiest solution and Milner does the opposite; he alwys searches the most difficult solution, which often leads in losing possession when some of our players are out of position. I really am not convinced by Milner.
The worst decision was not Geremi but Smith as captain
.
66 philwood // Apr 11, 2008 at 7:51
Looking at the transfer targets realistically I think we need to look at players from clubs who would look at a move to Newcastle as a step up and a chance to play under Keegan, as we can’t offer European football I think speaking of Thierry Henry and even Deco may be a bit unrealistic.
I think everyone agrees that we need more creativity in midfield so somebody like Moutinho would be ideal as would Van Der Vaart, Modric, Diego or Arshavin. All creative midfield players who play for clubs that aren’t in the top bracket (Sporting, Zagreb, Hamburg, Werder Bremen, Zenith) so could be worth looking at. The problem could be that clubs in the top bracket will also be looking at these players which means it could be difficult to attract them with no European football. On Keegans next list maybe some players closer to home who also offer creativity like Scott Brown, Aiden Mcgeady, David Bentley, Aaron Lennon. The first two would jump at the chance of a move to a top premiership club if their valuations were met (maybe 10 -12 mill) and Lennon may not be part of Ramos’s plans while Bentley could be offered a big wage to make the move from Blackburn. I would not welcome the addition of Jermaine Pennant though. I also expect Keegan to maybe bring in someone a little obscure, this could end up being someone like Boussoufa from Anderlecht, creative goal scoring winger who could probably be picked up for 4 -5 mill and would jump at the chance to play in the premiership. all fairly young players who would improve and Keegan may go for 2 or 3 to improve our squad.
I think most people would agree that we need more in defence. A left back is needed as Enrique is the only one in the squad at present and if N’zog goes then thats the closest we have to cover. Keegan could do worse than look at home here as Wayne Bridge could be gettable and if a decent offer is put in for Nicky Shorey then Reading would have to look at it. Bridge and Shorey are both attacking Fullbacks and particularly in Shorey’s case provide alot of assists which Keegan would like. I think we would all like to see a commanding centre back which we never seem to have had. Metzelder would be excellent but i’m not sure if he will be swapping Real Madrid for Newcastle. Richard Dunne could be worth enquiring about as would Van Buyten but he seems to be looking forward to playing under Klinsmann. If he becomes surplus to requirements then I would certainly have a look at Micheal Dawson for 4 million, even though he hasn’t been at his best this year I thought he looked excellent last year and is still young. If Carr goes maybe cover at right back but maybe Ramage could do that.
I fully expect Keegan to buy a striker in the summer as thats what he loves and does best. It will probably be somebody not many people have heard of who turns out to be quality but maybe he might look at Zarate. Expensive but looks superb for birmingham, surely a preferred destination would be Newcastle if they match his valuation.
Just my thoughts but looking forward to an exciting summer.
Cheers

Philwood, pretty concise (and good!) thoughts in my book; apart from 1.
‘IF’ Carr goes. there shouold be no IF about it. Always for me at best average. Thanks but no thanks.
