The local Sunday Sun is reporting today that Newcastle United are looking at Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta.

Fernando Amorebieta - 6′4″ tough tackling Spanish center back
News is that a Newcastle scout watched the 23-year-old center-half in Bilbao’s 1-0 home win over Espanyol last Sunday, and it’s interesting that Bilbao have the joint best defensive record in La Liga this season.
Liverpool are another club said to be interested in the youngster and he could end up in the Premier league next season. Amorebieta is thought to be an international star of the future, and at just under 6’ 4â€, he should be up to the physical rigors of the Premier League.
He has played 80 times for Bilbao since 2005, and is a Spanish Under-21 international and Bilbao are said to be willing to listen to offers of £6M and up for the player.
There is also some concern reported by the Sunday Sun in Steven Taylor. But we have no doubt Steven will sign an extended contract in the summer for Newcastle, and any news about him being unhappy on Tyneside is pure paper talk.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Not seen him.

Agree that taylor will stay, he wouldn’t walk away amid the second coming.
not seen this guy myself either but he sounds a decent prospect, a bit of a gamble bringing in a defender from la liga though? would he be able to adjust?
i’m a fan of the spanish defenders though so would like to see one of their younger prospects wearing the black and white.

Sorry to hear that Tom_Toon your knowledge on foreign players can usually be relied on. I find this link very interesting - even though the origin is dodgy.
PS I do want Tayls to stay.

“Emre set to leave Newcastle
Emre is expected to be on the move from Newcastle United in the summer.
The Independent says Newcastle see Anderlecht midfielder Moubarak Boussoufa as a potential replacement for the Turk.
Bayern Munich are among clubs to have been linked with Emre this season. ”
Not sure if this is a good or bad news, to be honest I don’t see Emre in the future of Newcastle United although he is a great player

How is Boussoufa a replacement? Hes nothing like emre.

i have only seen this spanish guy once, kept a clean sheet, by the way he played i thought he was a lot older than 23 as he plays one step ahead of the striker which more players get with experience, i thought he might off been 27, 28 and he is a threat at corners cos of his height would be good but this was only one game i saw him in against espanyol i think but atletico bilbao have only conceded 29 goals in 31 games this season.

Just because Liverpool is going after him, everyone’s making 1+1 =2 2×5 =5×2!!
seroiusly..
the only thing im sure of is that i’d bet my mortgage that he’s better than cacapa and bramble put together
8 Kash // Apr 13, 2008 at 13:47
Acrually WSQ, If you cvould have such a player ie
Cacapa + Bramble = Bramble rarely making mistakes with Cacapa’s loads of years of experience
Sounds like a good player to me. How much is your mortgage?

I think it’s surprising (and great!) that Keegan has managed to bring out the best in our European signings. Enrique and Beye have definitely thrived playing the more creative, free-flowing football evident in the side now.
It’s a pity Emre is so injury prone: he too would probably do well in the current side.
10 wsq // Apr 13, 2008 at 13:53
cacapa’s experience has count for nothing so far. his so called experience hasn’t add any value to the newcastle team. just another boumsong imo.
skirtel the liverpool CB is much better than cacapa even without experience.
If he was so good, lyon wouldn’t have let him go for free.
11 Nev // Apr 13, 2008 at 13:54
id prefer carlos cuellar the rangers CB
hes had a great season and probably the best CB in scotland, he speaks english i think and could be available for around £5mil and rangers paid £2.5 i think in the summer from oasuna :\

If Emre actually played some games we might be able to assess his ability. However in his 3 + seasons here IMO he’s been a waste of space.
13 Spyro // Apr 13, 2008 at 15:00
Skrtel makes A LOT of errors
14 zhun // Apr 13, 2008 at 15:18
this move will benefit Enrique, at least he will have a hometown company

I still cant figure out why and how people say emre is a great player…..Ok yeah he scored against the mackems but christ what else has he done except run after players like a headless chicken when he gets the ball taking from him….Every team knows how to play against emre…Tackle him hard then he’ll end up sent off…….Id sell him as I cant see him playing in a keegan team and he’s always injured………He was labelled the Turkish Maradona….I aint seen nowt to convince me he’s anything like that..
18 Scott Hodge // Apr 13, 2008 at 17:32
I’ve heard he’s a good player so might be a good idea to sign him and play him CB dropping Taylor to the bench or better still off loading him altogether!
19 toonfan1 // Apr 13, 2008 at 18:03
looks like the title is going man utds way:(

steven taylor sucks!!!!!!!!!!
21 Nick C // Apr 13, 2008 at 18:48
Its like a nervous tic for me, every time I hear about Spanish players coming our way I think of Marcelinho and Albert Luque (wrapped it up)
Marcelinho was in a successful Mallorca team that reached the Cup winners Cup Final and have a look at wor Albert on Youtube and he looks like a God.
I would just rather we went after players with Prem experience.
And Tom Toon. Tsk Tsk, I cannot believe u don’t know owt the Bilbao lad. You’re slipping kidder!!!
22 clinton martis // Apr 13, 2008 at 18:53
cacapa + bramble = camble ( campbell) lol see the 2 of them would make an awasome defender
23 toon4lyf // Apr 13, 2008 at 18:54
jeff
u clearly didnt watch many newcastle matches emre never gives the ball away he has 7 assists this season hes our most creative player best passer and a decent tackler and jeff how many times was he sent off????
24 Nick C // Apr 13, 2008 at 18:57
Yeah Toonfan1, its a shame the Gooners didn’t win today. Arsenal remind me of us in ‘96. They play the best football out of the top 4, but they don’t know how to finish the job. Adebayor and Fabregas look half the players they were pre Christmas.
25 Nick C // Apr 13, 2008 at 19:00
Can anyone tell me why there is so much antipathy towards Riise on this blog? To be fair, I don’t watch the lad week in, week out but I have always thought him to be a decent left sided player with a brilliant shot on him……
26 deano // Apr 13, 2008 at 19:06
have a look at this player on u tube
like shearer!
Dmitry sychev what a striker
WOW WOW WOW WOW GOALS WOW
LEATHEL FINISHER
27 apan // Apr 13, 2008 at 19:08
good prospect and i could somehow see he links up with enrique
and bloody hell his 6′4, prob the solution to our defence set piece and high ball probs
28 Ross // Apr 13, 2008 at 19:54
Nobbys dad emre hasnt fulfilled anything near what we thought he could..
but come on, surely you cant have forgotten that free kick against the unwashed..
2-2, 62/63 minutes i think it was?…curled one in off the post, what a goal that was
29 Obafan // Apr 13, 2008 at 20:13
Don’t know this Spanish defender, so I will not say anything about him. Here we go again: Cacapa is again the subject on the blog. And he gets his critics again.
What has he done recently that some of you have to slaghter him again? I’m still convinced he can be a very good CB. I think he never played 100% fit this season. And like all the others give him a descent chance under KK.
Why did we sign Diatta, that is a riddle to me? He does not get a chance to prove what he is capable of.
And then Boussoufa as replacement for Emre that is something that makes me really laugh. Why are some of you so excited about Boussoufa???? Have you ever seen him play? I, as Belgian, saw him a couple of games and he has never impressed me. I also know lots of Anderlecht fans (me not KV Mechelen is my team in Belgium) and they always say that he is not that special.
30 scottish mag // Apr 13, 2008 at 20:30
boussouffa staying anyway we need a box to box cm like lucho gonzalez
31 Leo // Apr 13, 2008 at 20:49
i would prefer cuellar also to this guy, although its going to cost an aweful lot to get the rangers center back
32 moomfan // Apr 13, 2008 at 21:46
this boussoufa is very small and more apt for league one. agree emre has wasted our time and money. a young strong CB is good news. don’t care to speculate on mediocre players such as boussoufa and the hand me down lots on other prem teams. out of the horse’s mouth… i heard king kev say,”three or four and they have to be absolute quality”. well, if you speak, read and understand english, that would exclude the riise, dunn, boussoufa, lennon, eidur… just to name a few that the media and other idiots are writting about. again… we are building a squad for now and the future, gear for success. let’s be positive in our words and thoughts, it will help our club and fight off the evil mongers(media) that are seemingly intent on distroying newcastle’s future. howay the lads and the toon army.

There was a battle of ex-Mags in America. Carver’s Toronto took on Gullit’s LA Galaxy, and won! 3-2 was the final score. Hard luck Becks ;-P

Haha Gullit, what a complete wanker that man is.
35 ELFER // Apr 14, 2008 at 8:30
I read about the possible leaving of EMRE this summer…I think he’s too much of a risk and so it would be best to sell him! Would be deligthed to get a fantastic holding midfielder in exchange!!
36 JP from The Rock of Gibraltar // Apr 14, 2008 at 11:12
Yeah sadly Emre has been a waste of money, but I do like him. We need a creative and less injury prone midfielder than Emre, hope we get at least one.
