It has not gone unnoticed that Newcastle scouts have attended most of Glasgow Rangers’ matches in the last two months.

Carlos Cuellar - Newcastle target this summer
And their attention has been focused on a few players, but one of them definitely seems to be 26 year-old Carlos Cuellar, who has turned in some excellent performances in central defense.
The Spaniard made a £2.3M move to Rangers from Osasuna only last July, but has been outstanding this season, and received the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League Player of the Year award this week.
Cuellar has already said he wants to stay at Rangers, but that’s before Newcastle have made any formal approach for the player. Keegan is hoping to persuade the Spanish Under-21 International to move to Newcastle by promising to make him Newcastle’s new kingpin central defender.
Keegan has watched the player several times and is understood to view the 6’3†Cuellar as good as any center half currently playing in the Premier league.
His arrival would certainly add big competition for the two central defensive positions currently held by Faye and Taylor. As we reported this morning our defense has improved significantly in recent weeks, with Abdoulaye Beye claiming the improvement is due to Faye’s dominant displays at centre-half, both on the ground and in the air.
We think Cuellar would be an excellent acquisition for Newcastle and the news is that the club will enter a bid for the player shortly, but there is sure to be competition from other PL clubs for his services.
He has played for Rangers 30 times and scored 4 goals this season.
Comments welcome.

Frankly speaking, I never watch him play, not even once. So, I’m not the best person to judge him.

Ed think you made a mistake in the article mate…”with Abdoulaye Beye claiming…..” Habib Beye?
3 Luke // Apr 16, 2008 at 11:21
Cueller came out today and said he didn’t want to play for a ‘bottom club’, with the suggestion being that the club in question, was NUFC.

Luke i too read that article by the daily mail, it seems as though his comments have been misconstrued and i do not know whether to believe it. Read for yourselves people.

You have no chance of signing cuellar. He will not want to sign for, at best, a mid table premiership club
6 nomis_jade // Apr 16, 2008 at 11:25
Im not sure of this one. We need someone with a bit of pace at centre back. Faye is great in the air but got done a hundred times by Mcfadden. All the best defences in the PL have pace, Ferdinand, gallas, Agger (when he is fit) micha richards even.
So a quick centre back is where id start looking? What do people think?
7 HeronMag // Apr 16, 2008 at 11:26
Not another Rangers CB please.
Get some proven quality in, not another Boumsong.
8 Jimmie // Apr 16, 2008 at 11:29
Totaly agree with HeronMag - No more Ranger centerbacks, please! Bring in Metzelder instead..
9 toonmadtom // Apr 16, 2008 at 11:31
if hes 26 he cant be in the spanish under 21 side m8
10 JP from The Rock of Gibraltar // Apr 16, 2008 at 11:34
Don’t know shit about this guy, but it does seem like another Boumsong. They all look impressive in the Scottish League.
11 doc // Apr 16, 2008 at 11:39
lets see how he does in the game tonight
12 Eric // Apr 16, 2008 at 11:48
If he did say he does not want to play for a club at the bottom then he can stay as far away from Toon as possible. If it is rubbish again from the Mirror sports pages then he would be a good signing. We need to find out. See what KK has to say. I would not soil my fish and chips with the Mirror, or some other papers. Either that or he wants it easier in the SPL.
13 Davies // Apr 16, 2008 at 11:48
Haven’t seen him play. It sounds like he’s not interested in coming to SJP, so screw him.
I did read that in the mail though…..

Cuellars a good player guys, i watch him regularly in scotland and hes been outstanding and also in europe!! We could do a lot worse for 4 or 5 million would be a great buy!
15 Ausgeordie // Apr 16, 2008 at 12:01
I think he was a ‘former’ under 21 spanish international unless he is the terminator and can time travel……which would be a pretty sweet talent for a centre back….better than pace anyway. No more boom boom though!!
16 Spyro // Apr 16, 2008 at 12:12
pacey CB….GALLAS!? are you sure
17 MichaelA // Apr 16, 2008 at 12:17
I can hear it now, ‘please, no more midfielder/forwards from Man Utd. Alan Smith has been awful’.
Cuellar is not Boumsong, although they do live in Europe, so I can see the comparison.
Honestly though, I don’t watch scottish Football so he could be the next Boumsong, but I’m not gonna judge a player for playing for a team a number of years after a donkey did. Well that’s just crazy talk.
18 iain // Apr 16, 2008 at 12:42
he might want to stay at rangers but wait and see what happens when bids start arriving after the way they forced hutton to spurs it wouldnt surprise me if the rangers board did it again.
especially if theres more than one club bidding rangers will force the price up imo.
19 Tom_Toon // Apr 16, 2008 at 12:43
Good player, not as good as Bruno Alves!
David Luiz is quality but not for the prem and Luisao is solid but clumbsy, they are my 3 suggestions.
Bruno Alves is the way forward.
Why would people want Metzelder? Talk about a sick note.
20 Marko // Apr 16, 2008 at 13:23
Good shout Tom Toon, I’d like to add Giannis Papadimitriou of Skoda Xanthia and Emmanuel Atukwei Clottey of Fußballclub Wacker Innsbruck.
See everyone, I’m an expert on European football players too.
21 Toon_Ksk // Apr 16, 2008 at 13:23
I find it funny that there are people calling for Metzelder… The physio doesn’t need a best friend.
22 ELFER // Apr 16, 2008 at 13:31
who?? well ok, I absolutely don’t know him and I have me doubts about players in the scotish league…but if all our scouts are sure he’s the man then he’s the man!
23 leavy // Apr 16, 2008 at 13:41
my brother is in scotland at university and i assure you he is not another boumsong
you must be very thick if you think every defender from scotland is another “boumsong”
the same with every player
can we buy young portugees as they may be another “viana”
or we cant buy another spanish striker as they mite be the next luque
some people talk some shit !
24 Leo // Apr 16, 2008 at 14:10
just because boumsong was from rangers doesnt mean that cuellar will flot.
just like that because hugo vianna flopped would not mean that veloso or moutinho will
25 Leo // Apr 16, 2008 at 14:10
leavy you took the words out of my mouth so much so it looks like i copied you haha
26 Mr T // Apr 16, 2008 at 15:11
Hugo was a great signing at the time with the amount of potential he allegedly had, cos he’s been to several big clubs but just never made it good…. it didn’t work out. Things don’t always work out, human error. The signing of Boumsong was again down to human error, that fat pie Shephard hiring some useless so and so called Souness…. anyone remember him?
You’ve gotta think though that we’ve watched cuellar a few times, you have to have faith in our scouts. Especially when the current crop signed Kadar and Tozer and Baheng who all look top notch!
He can’t be worse than Habib Faye (yes that was done on purpose Ed), cos his positioning is horrendous despite his qualities.
27 leavy // Apr 16, 2008 at 16:35
leo lol im glad im not alone on this one
mr t good points but i think our current management team is much less risky and stupid than our predocessors
28 Obafan // Apr 16, 2008 at 16:59
Totally agre Leavy; not fair to judge Cuellar with Boumsong, because they both played for Rangers.
So you can say; don’t go for Dunne, because Barton also played at Man City. So Dunne will be arrested next season. How ridiculous is that!!!
I do not know Cuellar, so I won’t judge on him.
29 Glasgow mag // Apr 16, 2008 at 17:27
Cuellar has been solid all season. Not only in the league but also in Europe (don’t forget they’re in the semi-finals of the Uefa Cup). Do you really think Keegan would sign a duffer of Boumsong’s calibre
30 apan // Apr 16, 2008 at 17:39
those people who said that know NUTS about football, hugo vianna and ronaldo play side by side bfore for ur info, it jus happened we got him instead of ronaldo, so ur sayin Ronaldo is shaite as well jus bcos his from the same club or nationalities? nani and anderson also from lisbon btw
think before any nonsense r written, cuellar might be from rangers but his no boumsong, i think KK lookin for a tall defender cos we look vulnerable in high balls
31 cupiddstunt // Apr 16, 2008 at 19:53
I have lived in Falkirk Scotland for thirty some years and support Falkirk as my local club I do not like or watch either of the old firm (rangers and celtic to the uninformed) I have watched rangers only when the come to play at Westfield and all I can say is he has not been particularly outstanding. I think there is a gulf of quality between the EPL and the SPL like Boumsong he looked good in the centre of rangers defence in the SPL but was found out when he got to SJ. I only hope that he can up his game week in week out as that is what it will need in the EPL.
On the other hand if he wants to stay in a mickey mouse league for silverware then fine obviously doesn’t relish the challenge of upping his game Even Steven Carr would look good in the SPL.
Do not let the EUFA cup run fool you rangers were played off the park by Roma they were lucky not to concede a handfull and had two good breaks and scored from both.
Cardiff is in the final of a cup that we tripped at the first hurdle, does that make them a quality team???? Is there any player from Cardiff that you would chase to get to SJ after all they have got a lot further than we have.
All in all he does not inspire me I just hope KK see something I have missed
32 Jamie G // Apr 16, 2008 at 20:13
Cuellar looks sharp. I live in glasgow and have loads of blue-nose friends, and they love him.
I agree with LEO, people who say things like we shouldnt sign him because boumsong was shit are significantly mistaken.
Cuellar looks good, although we shouldnt pay over-the-odds for him….. im sure ull all agree, last summer was a rediculous window for over-inflation of player’s values. I, like the rest of you, want to see players go for more realisitc fees. so if Rangers could double their money, i think both parties would be happy as around £5M is reasnoble, for whats looks to be a sharp, quick and intelligent stalwart.
33 toontweet // Apr 16, 2008 at 21:29
that good hes just been sent off
34 gordond // Apr 16, 2008 at 22:13
i’ve seen Quellar alot this season i think he would be great for us .Unlike JP from the rock of Gibraltar we don’t have the best league up here but our national team is doing well so don’t judge what you can’t see.People like you get on my nerve
35 Toon Al // Apr 16, 2008 at 23:41
did someone just say a player was solid AND clumsy? quite the contradiction there like
36 Tom_Toon // Apr 17, 2008 at 0:02
Yep, solid but gives away stupid free kicks some of the time because he isnt the neatest.
37 domtoon // Apr 17, 2008 at 10:05
any see the celtic - rangers game? he should be in goal!!!!!
38 Scott Hodge // Apr 17, 2008 at 15:36
I watched the match last night, his sending off aside, he looks ok and quite good in the air. I would be happy to give him 30k a week and offload Taylor if anyone wanted him !
39 Ross // Apr 17, 2008 at 19:25
he’s good like, i’ve seen alot of him and i’ve been impressed, dont wanna pay over the odds for him though.
however, his sending off last night was one of the most blatant i’ve seen for a while ,haha.
in a game that size though, he knew he was taking the hit for the team, almost paid off.
